This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

Very tropical like day in my neck of the woods, sure the tunes will provide the soundtrack.

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 12/14/17 7:08pm hyde:

i don't think i knew that Bert Kaempfert wrote the music for Strangers in the Night and Danke Schoen
Avatar Thu. 12/14/17 7:09pm Flash Strap:

@zonk: for a stretch of the evening, it will indeed get increasingly tropical in here
Avatar Thu. 12/14/17 7:10pm Flash Strap:

@Hyde: weird, isn't it

Avatar Thu. 12/14/17 7:40pm Flash Strap:

Perfidia as well, always welcome. actually, I could say that about almost every selection on this LP, which is why I like it and so many of those that are like it (and they are pretty numerous)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 12/14/17 7:41pm doctorjazz:

This has to be the world's schiziest show, from Krautrock to this...? (in a good way, of course)
Avatar Thu. 12/14/17 7:45pm Flash Strap:

we contain multitudes in the Explorers Room
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 12/14/17 7:46pm doctorjazz:

A Night At The Opera, latin style.
Avatar Thu. 12/14/17 7:46pm Flash Strap:

anything that taps the vein of exoticism, the Room may tap into as well
Avatar    Thu. 12/14/17 7:47pm geezerette:

So funny how American culture used to smooth all the edges off everything, use ketchup instead of salsa, cast Doris Day as an innocent 45 year old virgin...now all cultural "product" has slid to the opposite end of the spectrum.
  Thu. 12/14/17 7:49pm zonk ludlow:

A very different take on the Toreadors' Song. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q7xQOFOKYoo
Avatar Thu. 12/14/17 7:50pm still b/p:

You feed the multitudes with loaves and schizzes.

The funny thing about a bunch of the 60s Doris Day flicks is that, despite their squeaky clean pose and rep, they are overloaded with suggestiveness....about "it," who wants "it," whether she will do "it, " misunderstandings around "it."
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 12/14/17 7:55pm northguineahills:

Made it back home after hitting the store, good dancing toons!
Avatar Thu. 12/14/17 7:55pm Flash Strap:

Wonder if that was so children could be dragged to the theater.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 12/14/17 8:02pm melinda:

hi chums
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 12/14/17 8:04pm coelacanth∅:

hello Evan and Explorers
Avatar Thu. 12/14/17 8:05pm still b/p:

The whole plot of "That Touch of Mink" turns on whether she'll decide to go with Cary Grant.....and do it! It's all pretty clearly discussed, in terms suitable in its day.
We were shown one movie a year in the auditorium at the Catholic school I attended. One year it was The Glass Bottom Boat. It only occurred to me later to wonder what the nuns thought of the semi-farce moments late in the film regarding who's gullibly waiting for Doris in which bedroom...and to wonder how the film passed muster at all.
Avatar Thu. 12/14/17 8:07pm Flash Strap:

Hello Melinda! And Coelacanth!
Avatar Thu. 12/14/17 8:08pm Flash Strap:

This whole LP is such tremendous fun
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 12/14/17 8:09pm hyde:

when i was in like fourth or fifth grade, we had a school assembly where they showed Polanski's Macbeth. I don't know how that passed muster!
Avatar Thu. 12/14/17 8:09pm Flash Strap:

almost an Umiliani vibe
Avatar Thu. 12/14/17 8:09pm Flash Strap:

Banal, banal,
Bup bah ba dada...

Of course, it ain't the b-word at all. Like much of this music...I don't know why...it strikes a significant chord of appeal with me.

Avatar Thu. 12/14/17 8:27pm Flash Strap:

this lp being one of my better finds, I think

the other thing that inspired tonight's wanderings: I've been exploring my stacks in preparation for a more high-effort marathon premium this year. it will be all relatively obscure exotica from my own collection, and going through everything made me want to do another all-vinyl show
Avatar Thu. 12/14/17 8:28pm Flash Strap:

@NGH: indeed, indeed!
Avatar Thu. 12/14/17 8:30pm still b/p:

Took a little side-trip to watch Caterina with Dean Martin, sittin' on a helluva hammock, doing One Note Samba. The mugging around doesn't help anything, but the rendition, which is really all her, is nice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 12/14/17 8:30pm northguineahills:

This afternoon, I had to drive my boss to pick up the company truck in the shop. Since I've been listening to my cds in abc order, I was on Marc Behrens (Raster-Noton Recs), "I told him, I hope you like algorthm derived process electronic rhythmic music". He didn't complain.
Avatar Thu. 12/14/17 8:31pm Flash Strap:

oooh, i need to check that out! what's it from?

having some wacky connectivity issues with the stream tonight from my end. is cutting out like every 30 seconds in VLC. not sure what the deal is, but i may need to come back for the archive. it's driving me nuts!
Avatar Thu. 12/14/17 8:45pm Flash Strap:

That sucks Hyde! is anyone else getting that? from my end, I'm showing no problems
  Thu. 12/14/17 8:48pm yellowbird:

Fine on this end
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 12/14/17 8:48pm hyde:

no, i think it's just the wifi here for some reason. it's just coming and going, won't play the stream consistently. it's weird.
Avatar Thu. 12/14/17 8:48pm Flash Strap:

thanks bird

This LP is a mixed bag for sure, which is consistent with all the Billy Mure I've heard. Weird collision of styles
Avatar Thu. 12/14/17 9:04pm glenn:

there is a guillotine on st. pierre et miquelon. maybe they'd rent it out.
Avatar Thu. 12/14/17 9:04pm Flash Strap:

Hi Glenn! perhaps we should inquire
Avatar Thu. 12/14/17 9:06pm Flash Strap:

wild to think that Minnetonka became a popular tune because someone recorded a Native American singing it on an Edison cylinder in 1911
Avatar Thu. 12/14/17 9:09pm still b/p:

Intros are wincing-funny. "This one is Oriental now. Got it? Like Chinese or Japanese, see?"
Avatar Thu. 12/14/17 9:10pm Flash Strap:

oh yeah. just all the subtlety of a ... of a ... well, a gong
Avatar Thu. 12/14/17 9:12pm Flash Strap:

the "Oriental melody" is a virus, there's so many more interesting ways to establish an Orientalist premise, even within an ignorant/exoticist milieu
Avatar Thu. 12/14/17 9:16pm Flash Strap:

this is the best Tommy Garrett LP I've heard by far
Avatar Thu. 12/14/17 9:19pm still b/p:

Maybe I should arrange a lanai rental by the shore for my wake and have these things playing. Ever DJ a wake?
Avatar Thu. 12/14/17 9:21pm Flash Strap:

a luau-wake is strangely nice sounding. I hope yours is nowhere near impending, however
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 12/14/17 9:25pm northguineahills:

Gotta love the reverb on this Tommy Garrett.
Avatar Thu. 12/14/17 9:26pm Flash Strap:

it really sends it over the top!
Avatar Thu. 12/14/17 9:31pm still b/p:

Every time I see an image of a recording studio, back when they were sizeable, they seem visually drab and uninspiring. How could these pieces be laid down without having a little thematic decoration going on?
Avatar Thu. 12/14/17 9:38pm Flash Strap:

I always wonder too... that's why I really love seeing Lee Perry's studio, or imagining Arthur Lyman recording in the Kaiser Aluminum Dome, in the open Hawaiian air
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 12/14/17 9:39pm northguineahills:

operatic vocals w/ (is that a wurley?) organ, can't beat that!
Avatar Thu. 12/14/17 9:41pm XapnoMapcase:

I'm slowly putting together a studio of sorts and can't help emphasising look as much as sound
Avatar Thu. 12/14/17 9:42pm Flash Strap:

I agree, truly unbeatable! I love this record; it's worth a little bit of change but I'd never sell it

No bulletin here, but we'd have a better world, and I have to think happier people/employees, if the visual environment was always an active factor. Saw video -- in yet another "the boots sure are popular story" -- of a nearby L.L. Bean assembly facility, and good god it was nothing but indifferent light industrial look & layout...visual busyness of working necessities only. Even Bean's can't do better?

Sure thing NGH and FS, although at the rate its coming together I can't promise anything soon.

Wow, I've only heard Joe's stuff from the 90s forwards which was much closer to Mat's jazz/improv aesthetic.

@still b/p: I'm getting my boss to put up (my) maps and photos of out study sites to brighten the office to add some context and color.
Avatar Thu. 12/14/17 9:58pm still b/p:

Excellent, ngh!

Jut had a look at Perry's studio flavor. Like my apartment, only while my mess is fairly eclectic it's less purposeful. Saw an unfortunate post-burn view of his studio, too. One of his reported comments: "I am so sad and my wife is so mad."
Avatar Thu. 12/14/17 9:59pm Flash Strap:

@B/P: amazing. what a perfect thing to say.

I'm seeing him perform Super Ape in January, I wonder what on earth that will be like?

Columbia "Adventures in Sound" series, I see. I like to imagine a voice saying "It's Chinese-Japanese, see?" and "It's Adventures in Sound, see?" being like Red Riding Hood voice from the Bugs cartoon. "...which I'm taking to my Grandma...to have, SEE?"

Leda and the Swan is a story and subject in art from Greek mythology in which the god Zeus, in the form of a swan, seduces or rapes Leda. According to later Greek mythology, Leda bore Helen and Polydeuces, children of Zeus, while at the same time bearing Castor and Clytemnestra, children of her husband Tyndareus, the King of Sparta.

Avatar Thu. 12/14/17 10:18pm still b/p:

I was gonna say artists of yore very fond of Leda and the Swan as subject for painting, and sculpting. Sometimes not leaving the primary act just to suggestion and imagination.

My favorite 16th c.--early 16th c.--painting is Raphael's Madonna and Child with Book.

pretty brutal stereo mix though

Avatar Thu. 12/14/17 10:39pm still b/p:

The Lonely Bull is the kinda thing they'd play on WHDH..among others... in Boston in the 60s.

The animated Ferdinand the Bull movie, fresh made, in the typical pattern for such adaptations, looks like it has NOTHING of the story's fundamental simplicity, nor the charm or style of the original illustrations, which is discouraging. How you'd keep those qualities in a full-length picture, I don't know. But it seems a far departure.
Avatar Thu. 12/14/17 10:41pm still b/p:

If we're playing complaint bingo tonight, I might be a winner.
Avatar Thu. 12/14/17 10:42pm Flash Strap:

yeah, to hell with that Ferdinand movie, ooh it's so awful what they do to the children these days

whipped cream has That Cover but wow does the Bull beat it on tunes

"They"? "These days"?

We have always done it.
  Thu. 12/14/17 10:45pm Dean:

Not that Pixar isn't anathema.
Avatar Thu. 12/14/17 10:46pm Flash Strap:

mostly being tongue in cheek there, but, i mean, i'm not going to say children's media hasn't always been a cesspit of ideological conditioning, but it's getting increasingly, specifically, consumerist in very insidious ways and nothing heightens the grotesquerie of it like inserting it into the very simply-told, elegant, pacifist fable Ferdinand
  Thu. 12/14/17 10:47pm Dean:

I'm unaware of a new Ferdinand, but I avoid cinema altogether. Gotta say, though, that the consumerism trend ain't partial against children.

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 12/14/17 10:55pm melinda:

Thanks for playing Herb. When I was in high school I would play Lonely Bull in the morning before going to school. The melancholy vibe suited me, I guess, but I think the repetition drove my sister nuts because her room was right next to mine.

  Thu. 12/14/17 11:02pm Dean:

Pardon the tangent here, but I think it's relevant to WFMU. Cliff Lynch, a really smart and open thinker about the times in which we live, recently posted an article at First Monday about the conundrum of capturing a cultural record on the 'net: http://firstmonday.org/ojs/index.php/fm/article/view/8097/6583

The Atlantic picked it up: https://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2017/12/it-might-be-impossible-for-future-historians-to-understand-our-internet/547463/

If your time is strictly limited, read the Atlantic article. Otherwise, read Cliff's piece as well. WFMU is responsibly archiving its record, to the benefit of many *future* listeners. Consider the situations Cliff addresses...

WHat Dean mentioned reminds me of a web site that no longer exists. Maybe it was 15 years ago. I think it was called Virgin Mary Night Light but it was pretending to be views of future historians drawing wrong conclusions about artifacts from our time.

heh, just want to warn you (if you haven't seen him before) don't get too stoked for a lot of music! -maybe there will be that but when i saw him he ranted about the ark and the conspiracy and such about 2/3 of the time, at least.
...interesting, for sure, but a little frustrating when we weren't expecting it and hoped to be skanking all night.
Avatar Thu. 12/14/17 11:46pm Flash Strap:

good to know. that actually sounds like a great time... I know he's getting loopier by the day. Still, the show is ostensibly him playing Super Ape in its entirety so we'll see how that all comes together
