Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 12/10/17 9:01am Jeff Golick:

Yellooo, @Scraps!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 12/10/17 9:02am listener james from westwood:

Morning, Scraps, Jeff, and all! Best kind of Sunday morning: snowy, sunny, work on deck and D:O on the speakers!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 12/10/17 9:04am Jeff Golick:

Indeed, @listener james! What's for breakfast?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 12/10/17 9:07am listener james from westwood:

Soon, oatmeal. Also medical copyediting.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 12/10/17 9:11am Jeff Golick:

Delicious.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 12/10/17 9:11am Scraps:

Otis Redding and World Saxophone Quartet? Sign me up!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 12/10/17 9:12am Scraps:

I wish I could have eggs. Eggs! Sigh.....
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 12/10/17 9:13am Scraps:

The only breakfast food is eggs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 12/10/17 9:15am Scraps:

Soft boiled eggs! Ahhhhhhhh......
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 12/10/17 9:17am Scraps:

Otis Blue and Dictionary of Soul are two perfect albums.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 12/10/17 9:17am Jeff Golick:

What have we done to you, @Scraps?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 12/10/17 9:21am Scraps:

Trying to make eggs one-handed is hard. Usually I make a mess, and I can’t make my precise eggs that I want. So I don’t bother. Sigh.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 12/10/17 9:23am Scraps:

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 12/10/17 9:35am Brian in UK:

Hello Jeff and folks. I can remember the day it happened, or rather the days after. Think it is fair to say there was a feeling of shock and confusion. Then not long after Dock of the Bay arrived which I like but have always had mixed feelings for.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 12/10/17 9:37am Jeff Golick:

Hi, @Brian. Yeah, "Dock" is sort of inseparable from that moment.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 12/10/17 9:41am Brian in UK:

I like the email photgraph. Geno Washington and the Ram Jam Band. His Album title Hipsters, Flipsters Finger Poppin Daddies was Lord Buckley inspired.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 12/10/17 9:49am Scraps:

Do you have Complete & Unbelievable: The Otis Redding Dictionary of Soul ? That’s the best one, IMO
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 12/10/17 9:53am Jeff Golick:

I do, @Scraps. It's a great one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 12/10/17 9:53am Brian in UK:

This is coming over loud and clear.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 12/10/17 9:54am Jeff Golick:

It definitely has the best cover, @Scraps.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 12/10/17 9:54am Scraps:

The only drawback is it’s very short
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 12/10/17 9:55am Jeff Golick:

All killer, no filler.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 12/10/17 9:56am Scraps:

Best cover: My-My-My!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 12/10/17 10:04am Jeff Golick:

The big question is what version of "Respect" to play.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 12/10/17 10:04am listener james from westwood:

Dalton!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 12/10/17 10:07am Scraps:

What version of “Respect”: This is predictable, but: Both!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 12/10/17 10:14am Scraps:

Joë McPhee? ë??
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 12/10/17 10:15am doctorjazz:

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 12/10/17 10:16am Jeff Golick:

Hey, @doc! How was the show?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 12/10/17 10:17am doctorjazz:

Man, looks like I missed a great hour, have to check it out in the archives.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 12/10/17 10:20am Uncle Michael:

Did Otis die again?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 12/10/17 10:22am Jeff Golick:

Fifty years ago today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 12/10/17 10:22am doctorjazz:

Loved the show, 3 different takes on large band improvised music. And, of course, the Micros were GREAT! (I'm their groupie, though, but it was as good as I've seen them since their heyday). Sorry you missed it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 12/10/17 10:22am Jeff Golick:

Hey, @UM!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 12/10/17 10:23am Jeff Golick:

Good catch, @Scraps!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 12/10/17 10:26am doctorjazz:

Dave Douglas, cool!

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 12/10/17 10:27am Scraps:

@Jeff: But it’s on the album! (Joë)

Weird!

Me, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 12/10/17 10:28am Brian in UK:

It is only since The Fame set appeared that I heard You Left the Water Running. An ear opener for me. And that was a demo.

@Stanley! @Artie! Oh, great!

Lester Bowie has Brass Fantasy. But Dave Douglas has Brass Ecstasy! Maybe they would fight, but Lester is dead, alas
  Sun. 12/10/17 10:33am Doug Schulkind:

"Otis, my man!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 12/10/17 10:34am doctorjazz:

Miss Lester Bowie, he put on a great show. (Dave Douglas is no slouch, saw him in Philly not too long ago, but very different).
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 12/10/17 10:37am Scraps:

@doctorjazz: One of the awful things about moving from New York is I can’t see the Microscopic Septet anymore. And especially I can’t see Joel Forrester in his many shows. I got to be friends with him. He’s just amazing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 12/10/17 10:38am Brian in UK:

Do you like soul music?
No, well do the trouser press.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 12/10/17 10:43am Jeff Golick:

Sir @Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 12/10/17 10:43am doctorjazz:

@Scraps, I think Joel Forrester is terrific as well, picked up album under his name.
Nels Cline/Gerald Cleaver/Larry Ochs are playing tonight in a theater in Philly, but it's a "school night", and I was out last night think I'll just take it easy...
Avatar    Sun. 12/10/17 10:43am Doug Schulkind:

A few months back we lost Johnny Daye, an amazing blue-eyed soul crooner from Pittsburgh who was discovered and mentored by Otis. Daye was poised for stardom, and then Otis died. Daye (née John DiBucci) wound up back in Pittsburgh selling cars in anonymity.
  Sun. 12/10/17 10:44am JtotheK:

Enjoying the show - hi Jeff, everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 12/10/17 10:45am Jeff Golick:

Oh man, @Doug. Yeah. It goes well beyond the one man, the loss, doesn't it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 12/10/17 10:46am Jeff Golick:

Hey, @JtotheK, thrilled to hear it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 12/10/17 10:46am doctorjazz:

@Doug, I remember you doing a tribute to him on your show, great stuff!
(how's the paper going?)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 12/10/17 10:51am doctorjazz:

Grateful Dead did a nice cover of Hard to Handle.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 12/10/17 10:52am doctorjazz:

(probably not to be played after Otis', though...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 12/10/17 10:53am Jeff Golick:

I came to "Hard to Handle" via the Black Crowes.
  Sun. 12/10/17 10:54am rw:

I decided this year to stop speaking to a person I've known for a long time for a huge variety of reasons, many suddenly salient this year, but one of them has to be that this person doesn't consider hip-hop or rap to be music. These tracks further confirm my conclusion that this person is full of shit.

i'll be 57 on friday.

I'm not the most consistent hip-hop fan, or country fan. But, it always grating when someone proudly states they don't like rap and country.

@james hip hop the single most influencial music in the last thirty years, you know when someone says sounds like crap not rap you know they are still listening to records from the Sixties.

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 12/10/17 11:24am doctorjazz:

Took a quick look at the Neil Young article. The streaming service is about Young's high quality digital audio beliefs. He launched the Pono player and a music download service for the same reason (they failed... I have and love the Pono, though). He's a big hater of compressed digital music. The streams are supposed to be high resolution digital.

So who likes All Rock 'n Roll; All Folk; All Jazz; All Blues etc. I think it is not possible to like everything. Have an appreciation maybe. The wonder of radio is that it is someone elses selection that you are opening your mind to like this wonderful station. The Off button is always an option. Constantly seeking is a healthy choice.
As John Peel said I may not like Merzbow but I would fight to the death to have it played on the radio.

Ha! My son asked me the other day about smoking cigarettes and how pervasive the practice used to be. He was listening to DEVO's version of Satisfaction thinking it was the original. Took a little explaining to convey the irony, etc.
  Sun. 12/10/17 11:27am Dean:

I only like one song, but I can never remember which one it is. Either the Night Ranger tune about motoring, or Camille Saint-Saëns' Le Cygne. Either way, they both kick ass.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 12/10/17 11:27am Jeff Golick:

@Dean! Oh, @Dean.

Best "water" of them all.

Love this version of You Left the Water Running.
  Sun. 12/10/17 11:30am rw:

coelacanth, I wish I liked hiphop a little more as a genre because I feel like they're doing some of the most interesting stuff out there these days. I just don't have the patience or temperament or whatever to sift through it all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 12/10/17 11:30am Brian in UK:

This just lift my spirits for such a sad song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 12/10/17 11:30am coelacanth∅:

Brian, i agree on all of that.
  Sun. 12/10/17 11:31am Listener Gregory:

@Brian I love Merzbow!! I have reached the apex of Merzbow appreciation in that I can tell the difference between some of his albums. It was a proud day for me when I realized that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 12/10/17 11:31am doctorjazz:

BiUK, I missed that Satisfaction show, looks like fun, will listen to it soon. Thanks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 12/10/17 11:31am Scraps:

Actually, IMGDO “Satisfaction” has at least three great covers. Redding’s one. Devo and the Residents are two great covers also, and both of them are very different. And that’s just off the top of my head.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 12/10/17 11:32am Brian in UK:

@doc down that road lies madness.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 12/10/17 11:33am coelacanth∅:

rw i appreciate that sentiment but then, absolutely don't agree!
the overwhelming majority of hiphop is formuliac; recycled for the sake of money.
there are of course bright shining star exceptions.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 12/10/17 11:35am Uncle Michael:

Black Crowes were covering the Dead's version.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 12/10/17 11:36am coelacanth∅:

i definitely recognised hard to handle when i first heard the black crows' version, but don't know where from.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 12/10/17 11:37am Scraps:

Coel, sure. But then, 98% of rock mediocre to bad. 95% of jazz is etc. etc, etc. I don’t think hiphop is any worse.....
  Sun. 12/10/17 11:38am Listener Gregory:

I don't believe that Merzbow did any Redding covers but will check my records.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 12/10/17 11:38am doctorjazz:

Hey, I've forwarded the link to Ken's show on Bohemian Rhapsody (wondered why I never heard from them again...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 12/10/17 11:39am Brian in UK:

@LG did Otis cover any Merzbow?
  Sun. 12/10/17 11:39am miles:

Wayne Cochran does s good version of Can't Turn You Lose in the Joe namath movie CC and Company

But I find new music every day. Because I look for it. So I’m happy about the state of music. 90+% of it is =always= shitty. But there’s a LOT of music. :-)

  Sun. 12/10/17 11:50am Listener Gregory:

I regret that later on, Cecil refused to play standards or other people's compositions, as his versions were always so good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 12/10/17 11:50am northguineahills:

The only music I can't stand is most Top 40 (post 1990) and bro country. Bad contemporary rock music will send me to the exits at a bar or restaurant really fast, but bad contemporary hiphop is still tolerable in my book.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 12/10/17 11:51am northguineahills:

cool, thanks Jeff!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 12/10/17 11:52am northguineahills:

don't worry doctorjazz, there are close to 500 Merzbow albums out there to choose from from the last 35 years.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 12/10/17 11:53am doctorjazz:

Oy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 12/10/17 11:53am Jeff Golick:

There's a Jamie Saft/Merzbow collab out there, @doc. Maybe start there.
  Sun. 12/10/17 11:54am Dean:

Heard Merzbow at Victo long ago. IIRC, he played the tune that inspired "Dock," "Sittin' on the Potentiometer of the Oscillator."
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 12/10/17 11:55am coelacanth∅:

Scraps i do think it's worse. i think the industry is saturated with people who's desire to be rich and famous far outweighs any talent they may have. this being the fault of the industry money machine.
i seek new music every day, and i hear new music often, introduced to me by my chosen (non-fmu) family that i never would've heard otherwise; and it's easy to say that the overwhelming majority of new sound that doesn't seem recycled and uninspired is not rap/hiphop oriented. (and i had a respectable rap/hiphop collection before many of these friends were born)
  Sun. 12/10/17 11:57am Listener Gregory:

Don't take this the wrong way, Jeff, but I'm glad the show is ending, so that I can go back and hear the parts I missed at the beginning! Great job.

Beautiful WSQ!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 12/10/17 11:58am Stanley:

Well, I must say I very much enjoyed following the music and the chat on today's program. My hands were otherwise occupied, unfortunately, with cleaning chores.
Thanks Jeff and esteemed listeners.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 12/10/17 11:59am doctorjazz:

I like Jamie Saft. will give it a try.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 12/10/17 11:59am coelacanth∅:

the main thing though that grates me about most rap is not the lack of musical creativity but that it's not even about the music at all. if rappers had to have musical inclinations there wouldn't be many rappers. what they're selling (and selling is the only point for the majority of them) is image and an attitude, which is an insecure, aggressive and cold one. (that kanye/jay-z abomination being an example)
- many times i've seen rap turn an entire pub into a room full of tough-guy poseurs.
