Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

i was perhaps hoping the graphic today was a veiled allusion to the great UK Sausage Roll nativity controversy... good evening, Uncle M
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 12/8/17 7:42am Uncle Michael:

Aus!

I don't know what that is, but yes...it is!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 12/8/17 7:45am ausmanx:

"Earlier this week, the UK high-street baker Greggs was labelled “sick” and faced boycotts after picturing a sausage roll in the Nativity scene to advertise its Advent calendar. Now some have pointed out that “Lord Jesus”, who is usually depicted in the crib in the Christian scene, remarkably spells “Susejd rol” backwards"
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 12/8/17 7:50am doctorjazz:

Hey, checking in!
(great concert tomorrow night, Microscopnc Septet, Jazz Passengers, and Kamakaze Ground Crew, psyched).
Got to see Nels Cline and The Autumn Defense last weekend, who put on a show in my FRIEND'S LIVING ROOM (he's friendly with many of the Wilco members). It was cool.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 12/8/17 7:53am ausmanx:

doctor jazz, living room gigs are the only way to go these days, i reckon! chris corsano did two nights at my house this year, and peter brotzmann is doing two nights next year. you need to let lots of people in, though! no food allowed
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 12/8/17 8:01am doctorjazz:

@ausmanx, they are great! I'd love to get to your house for those shows (Brontzmann!!!!), though I believe you're not geographically convenient to us New Jersey-ites! As for local living room gigs, I don't know of many in the NY area. There's a classical series that happens called GroupMuse which happens all over the NYC area (much in the boros), but generally difficult for me to get to. I'd love to find out about some more stuff (concert going in Manhattan is such an expensive hassle...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 12/8/17 8:07am ausmanx:

it's become pretty big here with sites like this parlourgigs.com i don't use them as i have my own list after 9 years, but there's gotta be a big market where you are, surely? i know phill niblock's still doing his loft events (he has a bunch this month, i know, including henry flynt, which i'm very envious of)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 12/8/17 8:16am doctorjazz:

Googled it a bit-the Phil Niblock site show some shows from 2007, and some international stuff, not much here. Must be some around, but I only know of the classical series, GroupMuse (which likely means I'm just out of the loop). Certainly the living room set has an intimacy and connection to the music hard to get in a club or concert venue (my friend is in Philadelphia, 1.5-2 hours from me; I think some more does go on there).

I had hoped to become dignified and old. One of of two is okay, I guess.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 12/8/17 11:29am Uncle Michael:

I hear that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 12/8/17 11:30am northguineahills:

I first heard this Modern Lovers track via Sloan.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 12/8/17 11:30am The Oscar:

My dad gave me this album maybe a week after I got my driver's license, which is maybe the ideal time and circumstance to receive it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 12/8/17 11:30am Parq:

Remember the "Dignity -- always dignity!" scene from "Singin' In the Rain"? 'Nuff said.

Is there a song coming up for a middle-aged ever-more-sore shoulder?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 12/8/17 11:34am Parq:

Still -- maybe "You're gonna carry that weight a long time".
Avatar Fri. 12/8/17 11:36am still b/p:

It made my slumber not so golden this morning, I tell ya.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 12/8/17 11:36am Artie:

"Take a load off b/p, take a load for free..."
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 12/8/17 11:40am Sem Chumbo:

Wow, wow. Haven't heard this in some time. Much obliged, UM.

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 12/8/17 11:42am Uncle Michael:

Thanks so much, Annie. I'm happy when I'm with you (all).
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 12/8/17 11:42am Uncle Michael:

Which, Sem?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 12/8/17 11:43am doctorjazz:

Just saw the Nat King Cole bio on Netflix; interesting (but really didn't get in too deeply). Usually just watch these things for the music.
Avatar Fri. 12/8/17 11:43am still b/p:

If these last two don't get a blue ribbon at the Segue Fair, I don't know what would.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 12/8/17 11:44am doctorjazz:

(Cole really has some voice and style-totally eclipsed that he was a fine jazz pianist)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 12/8/17 11:47am The Oscar:

@stil I would totally go to the Segue Fair.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 12/8/17 11:48am doctorjazz:

Fine show, UM, loved it, thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 12/8/17 11:49am Uncle Michael:

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 12/8/17 11:51am The Oscar:

I've been watching Dark Shadows on Hulu every morning with my breakfast, but they took out the chunk from the middle where I was at and now I don't know what to do with my mornings.
Avatar Fri. 12/8/17 11:53am still b/p:

Remember Quentin's sideburns? Scaaaaary!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 12/8/17 11:53am Sem Chumbo:

Both mental Astronaut AND Nat King Cole. Twofer, as it turned out!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 12/8/17 11:54am northguineahills:

Thanks for the hinky dinky!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 12/8/17 11:54am The Oscar:

@still I didn't even make it to Quentin! I *just* managed to get past the loooong stretch where they're in 1795.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 12/8/17 11:56am hyde:

thanks!
Avatar Fri. 12/8/17 11:58am still b/p:

We had special permission to watch TV in the afternoon when Dark Shadows was on.

Blue Ribbon in the Radio Show Demonstration Barn, Uncle Michael. Thanks!
     Fri. 12/8/17 12:00pm Listener Robert:

THAT's a really fun concept, never thought of: inside-out playing a cylinder!
