The Triscuits are a callin'. Have a great rest of the show, Mr. G!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 11/19/17 9:33am Jeff Golick:

Thanks, boss! Stack 'em high!
  Sun. 11/19/17 9:34am mic_a:

Heh. I was listening to the Herbie Hancock track and thinking about how "a lot of the best jazz-rock came from people who worked with Miles. Even Keith Jarret -- he did some good stuff in that line, early on." And there he appeared. Nice call.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 11/19/17 9:34am Brian in UK:

Jeff what's happenin'.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 11/19/17 9:34am doctorjazz:

Hi, Outies! Time for Sunday festivities!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 11/19/17 9:36am doctorjazz:

Like this European Boogie, who says they can't.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 11/19/17 9:39am Jeff Golick:

Greetings, @mic_a! I had similar thoughts - along the lines of "this is like the Miles electric band with all traces of Miles removed."
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 11/19/17 9:40am Jeff Golick:

@Brian: Just trying to put one foot in front of the other. How are the chickens faring?

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 11/19/17 9:46am doctorjazz:

Fela! Great stuff!

(missing Zorn at the Village Vanguard again, last day of his run. Have a commitment I need to keep. Pretty cool that he seems to be a regular there these days. Who's thunk it years back?)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 11/19/17 9:48am Jeff Golick:

Thanks for giving me the idea for the next song, @doc!

I'm missing so much amazing live music right now, it's vaguely sickening.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 11/19/17 9:55am doctorjazz:

That's who Zorn is playing with tonight, if I remember correctly, great track! (missing live music?... Story of my life, there's just so much going on, have other things to do in life...).
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 11/19/17 9:55am Stanley:

Guys! So happy to be back from Christmas shopping.
It's nuts out there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 11/19/17 9:57am Brian in UK:

Jeff, chickens have not laid for ten days. Works have been said. Always happens when the clocks change.

Stanley, thought I said just give me cash this year.

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 11/19/17 10:02am Stanley:

Hey Brian - you'll get the usual festive sweater and be happy with it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 11/19/17 10:03am Jeff Golick:

Just added bandcamp link to the Zion 80 album to the playlist -- it's very reasonably priced!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 11/19/17 10:04am Jeff Golick:

@Stanley's here! Hey, @Stanley, how're things?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 11/19/17 10:05am Brian in UK:

@doc you know that counceling is an option.

"Numbers add up to nothing" N Young.

Stanley I need some drawers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 11/19/17 10:05am Stanley:

Hi Jeff. frazzled, to be honest. Just immerse me in a sense deprivation tank with this Conrad Schnitzler on a loop and I'll be fine in a while.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 11/19/17 10:10am Stanley:

Brian, they don't do drawers any more. It's trunks, briefs or, God knows what these are, 'slips'.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 11/19/17 10:11am Jeff Golick:

Frazzled is the baseline these days, isn't it, @Stanley.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/19/17 10:11am listener james from westwood:

Na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na...
  Sun. 11/19/17 10:12am Dean:

All about that base.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 11/19/17 10:12am Jeff Golick:

How low can you go, @Dean.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 11/19/17 10:12am Brian in UK:

Tranquility Bass.
  Sun. 11/19/17 10:13am Dean:

Twenty hurts?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/19/17 10:14am listener james from westwood:

There was a wonderful show on FMU in the early aughts called Lane Closure Ambrosia that was all this sort of thing, of that era, along with ambient jams. Late Saturday nights. Perfect time for it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/19/17 10:14am listener james from westwood:

The Amen Break was very much in effect in that show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 11/19/17 10:15am Jeff Golick:

As opposed to the Caddyshack break, in this one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 11/19/17 10:15am Jeff Golick:

@ljfw: I look forward to the completion of your "oral history of WFMU" book project.
  Sun. 11/19/17 10:16am Dean:

@doctorjazz: I conveyed last night to Satoko Fujii your complaint about her supernumerary catalog. She laughed, "It's an addiction."
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 11/19/17 10:16am Brian in UK:

Amen Corner is all I know about golf.

Peter Nelson sometimes dipped his toes into this swirl.
  Sun. 11/19/17 10:17am Dean:

Hey, Rocket Records used to be Elton John's old label with Gus Dudgeon as house producer. Solution's Cordon Bleu appeared on it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 11/19/17 10:18am Jeff Golick:

@Dean: thanks for talking to her. (I think that was also a request of mine.) Good show?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/19/17 10:21am listener james from westwood:

@Jeff: Not sure if I'm the one to write it, but I'd definitely contribute to it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 11/19/17 10:22am Jeff Golick:

The wave form for this tune is not so much a wave as a bright white tube.
  Sun. 11/19/17 10:26am Dean:

Oh, right, it was you, @Jeff G. The show was terrific. It was her trio Gato Libre, with Natsuki Tamura on trumpet and Yasuko Kaneko on trombone. In a small flat. With seventeen attendees. Fujii played accordion, often to provide drone, while trumpet and trombone exchanged motifs or extended melodies. Gelb's menu was stunning, too: pumpkin puree with yuzu glazed shiitake and enoki; smoked tofu and snow pea wrapped with Yaba with yuzu karashi on braised lotus root and mizuna salad; yuzu curry with tempe, kabocha, and potato; Yuzu pickled cucumbers; and dessert, homemade waffle bowls with yuzu-ginger ice cream topped with yuzu glazed walnuts. I picked up Fujii's Fukushima recording, featuring a host of big names: Zorn, Malaby, Eskelin...just amazing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 11/19/17 10:27am Jeff Golick:

WOW
  Sun. 11/19/17 10:27am Dean:

To state the obvious, the theme was "yuzu." Gato Libre even performed a song by the name.
  Sun. 11/19/17 10:27am Dean:

Phil is a treasure.
  Sun. 11/19/17 10:31am JtotheK:

Hi Jeff, good day - everyone!

I wish Silver had also ripped off Kid Charlemagne.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 11/19/17 10:49am Brian in UK:

Dean Smoked tofu is delish. Trust you took photographs of every morsel.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 11/19/17 10:49am Jeff Golick:

Ha.

“An original artist cannot copy. So he only has to copy in order to be original." -Jean Cocteau
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 11/19/17 10:49am doctorjazz:

@Dean, sounds just amazing, that house concert. I'll be going to one my Philly friend puts on in his living room with The Autumn Defense (a Wilco spin off) and Nels Cline solo. The menu won't be as interesting, though, pizza and brownies usually.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 11/19/17 10:51am Jeff Golick:

@davefromtoronto: Hiya! It does indeed!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 11/19/17 10:51am Brian in UK:

"Where's the toilet" a guest of Jean Cocteau.
  Sun. 11/19/17 10:52am Dean:

No photos for me, @Brian in UK. I'm antiocularcentric (see Martin Jay, Downcast Eyes). But, yes, the smoked tofu was quite special. I'd never had it before.

Cline is on the Fukushima record, too, @doctorjazz.
  Sun. 11/19/17 10:52am davefromtoronto:

ii think picasso also said "great artists don't borrow, they steal"
  Sun. 11/19/17 10:52am Dean:

Picasso stole that from T.S. Eliot.
  Sun. 11/19/17 10:53am davefromtoronto:

ha - nice one...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 11/19/17 10:55am Brian in UK:

I think that it is accepted that Steely Dan liberated the opening from Mr Silver.
  Sun. 11/19/17 10:55am Dean:

Gelb played an old Leo Smith record, I think Spirit Catcher, between courses. Real nice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 11/19/17 10:56am northguineahills:

@Dean: I'm not antiocularcentric, but I have a photographic memory, so I never a see need to take pics. It has always bugs the hell of my wife (and ex-gfs) and family members that I have no pics of them and what pics that are around (on the computer) are of me that they took.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 11/19/17 10:56am Brian in UK:

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 11/19/17 10:58am northguineahills:

Ah, Doug played this Joe McPhee back in 2015 (when I faved it).
  Sun. 11/19/17 10:59am Dean:

Actually, @Brian in UK, Phil hosts an early evening. Starts at 7:00, dinner is served, of which the performers partake, followed by the musical performance, and then dessert. We were out before 10:00, and I think Phil is happy to have his home back to himself. It's not that big.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 11/19/17 10:59am Brian in UK:

@ngh I have gone to Lee Miller experimenting during her time with Man Ray in Paris.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 11/19/17 10:59am doctorjazz:

This Joe McPhee is very cool, not expert in his stuff but didn't think fusion when I hear his name.
Do my Audiophile geek thing... Wide stage here, but bass mixed a bit low to my ears (off my phone...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 11/19/17 11:00am Uncle Michael:

Brian, one is very much like a shortcrust. The other is a new one I'm trying with folded layers prior to rolling out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 11/19/17 11:02am northguineahills:

@Dean: That sounds like the old Monkeyhouse in Brooklyn before it went legit. Artists would cook nice veggie meals then play for an audience (who showed up from word of mouth) in a loft. It was good food and good fun.
  Sun. 11/19/17 11:03am Dean:

@ngh: I get the same thing from family. But I also manage to stay out of photo shots a good chunk of the time. Heh, we have a Monkey House here in Berkeley, too. It pretends to be a "secret" venue with a non-descript store-front. Heard Penelope Houston there.

@doctorjazz: Speaking of audiophilia, I picked up a reissue of Carmen McRae's Billie Holiday tribute album yesterday, two bucks. The sound is gorgeous.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 11/19/17 11:03am doctorjazz:

Belated hellos, @ngh!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 11/19/17 11:07am Brian in UK:

Time to venture into the chilly air for dog walk. Then maybe hot chocolate. Our daughter brought some American Heritage historic chocolate block back from Boston. 63%.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 11/19/17 11:08am doctorjazz:

Nice pick up, Dean, don't think I have that one, bargains are exciting!

Ornette played the hell out of that!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 11/19/17 11:08am Uncle Michael:

keep runnin'
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 11/19/17 11:09am northguineahills:

@Dean: the Monkeyhouse in Brooklyn went legit in Williamsburg and found an actual restaurant. I can't complain as I played there a few times (then they curated since they had regular shows on the weekends), but then they got priced out a few years ago and moved to DUMBO, and I never saw the place again.
  Sun. 11/19/17 11:13am Dean:

Had to look up DUMBO. Sounds like a Yardbirds tune, almost.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 11/19/17 11:16am northguineahills:

Well, Dave Liebman has somehow floated under my radar all of these years.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 11/19/17 11:19am Jeff Golick:

You've heard him with Miles, most likely, @ngh.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 11/19/17 11:21am doctorjazz:

The Liebman track is great!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 11/19/17 11:23am doctorjazz:

Liebman was known as a Coltrane expert, if I remember correctly...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 11/19/17 11:24am northguineahills:

Hmmm, I thought I new most of his lineups. I"ve finally got one cd tower up, and have opened my cd boxes. Just another tower and and two shelves to go. Then I have to tackle my vinyl which I dread/look forward to.

Ohhhhh! @doctorjazz, I have heard of him.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 11/19/17 11:33am doctorjazz:

There is a regular series of apartment concerts in the NY area, Groupmuse, that I get emails on and have wanted to attend for the longest time, but haven't gotten to.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 11/19/17 11:37am doctorjazz:

(maybe when I retire I'll get to more shows, but that's not happening for a while...)

Fun set, Jeff!
  Sun. 11/19/17 11:39am Dean:

G'morning, all. I gotta go to work today.

Yeah, @doctorjazz, never enough time to get to those shows. Zeke were supposed to play in Oakland in late October, but that show fizzled;instead, they'll be in SF in late December. That I won't miss. Meanwhile, The Residents are touring again. And Phil is hosting a Carnatic saxophone player in early December.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 11/19/17 11:40am doctorjazz:

I'd love to catch The Residents.
