Hey Hyde!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 11/8/17 10:03pm northguineahills:

Finally, got sound again (laptop is stroking on me)
Avatar Wed. 11/8/17 10:04pm Jeff Ash:

Man, that top of the hour sneaks up on you. But here I am, reporting from the shadow of Lambeau Field.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 11/8/17 10:04pm Funky16Corners:

NGH, Jeff! Good evening!
  Wed. 11/8/17 10:04pm cupcakejenny:

Hi. I texted you
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 11/8/17 10:05pm Funky16Corners:

NGH you can't not have sound!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 11/8/17 10:05pm Funky16Corners:

Hi Jenny!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 11/8/17 10:10pm northguineahills:

Even w/o sound, there is music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 11/8/17 10:10pm Funky16Corners:

Hmmm, that sounds like a zen koan.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 11/8/17 10:13pm northguineahills:

nah, just getting inside of the noggin of John Cage. wait, you're right, that would work as a flowing koan! If I had commentary from wfmu 24/7 I'd be a much more creative person!
  Wed. 11/8/17 10:14pm Dean:

I pretty sure Cage held that "without sound" is not the same as "silence."
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 11/8/17 10:18pm Funky16Corners:

But what would Cage have made of these funky New Orleans drums?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 11/8/17 10:19pm hyde:

gotta go to sleep. night, friends
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 11/8/17 10:20pm Funky16Corners:

Nite Hyde!
  Wed. 11/8/17 10:21pm Dean:

He'd a dug 'em.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 11/8/17 10:22pm Funky16Corners:

I suspect you're right!
  Wed. 11/8/17 10:23pm Dean:

NOLA sure dug him. http://www.acehotel.com/calendar/neworleans/untouchable-numbers-nola
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 11/8/17 10:31pm northguineahills:

@Dean: True, but even he recognized a human can't have a experience w/o sound as his experiences in the anechoic chambers.

I love the Brainfreeze mix, a fave of mine!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 11/8/17 10:31pm northguineahills:

I thought something sounded familiar.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 11/8/17 10:32pm Funky16Corners:

Yeah, Brainfreeze is a killer!
  Wed. 11/8/17 10:34pm Dean:

I have always maintained that if I had to forgo a sense it would be sight, which I find mostly superfluous. But hearing? Never.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 11/8/17 10:34pm Funky16Corners:

Yeah, no music, no fun, period.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 11/8/17 10:35pm Funky16Corners:

And I mean "fun" in every sense
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 11/8/17 10:39pm northguineahills:

It's a tough call, but I agree.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 11/8/17 10:40pm Funky16Corners:

Not that I'm volunteering to be blinded any time soon. Too many nice fall colors happening.
  Wed. 11/8/17 10:43pm Dean:

Nature's overrated in my book.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 11/8/17 10:46pm northguineahills:

It was a common punishment for overthrown emperors of the Byzantium Empire b/c killing wouldn't be too "Xtian".
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 11/8/17 10:49pm Funky16Corners:

How nice of them!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 11/8/17 10:50pm doctorjazz:

Hey, quick check in. Missed the Association (think that was the 1st or 2nd album I ever bought. Boy, what it wrought...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 11/8/17 10:50pm Funky16Corners:

Hey Doc!

That looks interesting!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 11/8/17 10:59pm coelacanth∅:

greetings Larry and others
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 11/8/17 10:59pm Funky16Corners:

Hey C!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 11/8/17 11:12pm coelacanth∅:

Parks claims he was almost entirely responsible for sail on sailor. Wilson has said he basically wrote it with Ray Kennedy.
...who knows.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 11/8/17 11:13pm Funky16Corners:

I suspect there was enough drugs going around that nobody knows for sure. I sure doesn't sound like it was written by a committee.
  Wed. 11/8/17 11:14pm Dean:

We should view skeptically anybody who claims almost entire responsibility for anything.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 11/8/17 11:15pm Funky16Corners:

True that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 11/8/17 11:17pm coelacanth∅:

haha, yeah Larry.
...Dean it's really true; but on the other hand does a whole band always have to get writing credits for the respective instrumentalists' arrangements of their own parts? it must be hard to draw the line some times.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 11/8/17 11:18pm Funky16Corners:

I think a lot of that, especially in the 60s was by prior arrangement.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 11/8/17 11:19pm Funky16Corners:

I remember hearing stories about how Pete Townshend was driving around in a Jaguar while the rest of the Who were making ketchup soup in a coldwater flat
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 11/8/17 11:22pm coelacanth∅:

i've heard that, and similar stories with some others.
...maybe Pete really did pen everything but man he could've thrown 'em a fucking bone.
  Wed. 11/8/17 11:23pm Dean:

It is inherently hard, sometimes impossible, to draw the lines. We have copyright regimes designed to do the best we think we can do to promote creativity (whatever that is). Incentives, you know. But legal definitions don't prescribe historical ones.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 11/8/17 11:24pm coelacanth∅:

...you know Thom York composes all the lyrics and much of the music of radiohead, but all songs are credited to the whole band. it's just the kind of person he is.
(i know other examples but can't think of them)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 11/8/17 11:26pm Funky16Corners:

Yeah, as someone who's been in bands, there should be a feeling of brotherhood, unless ego forces an employer/employee thing, which breaks up bands
  Wed. 11/8/17 11:27pm Dean:

If that is correct, @ coelacanth∅, then I view Thom Yorke's practice as nothing more than a way of spreading blame. That's because I utterly don't get Radiohead.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 11/8/17 11:32pm Funky16Corners:

I would not be surprised to discover that agreements of that sort are few and far between these days.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 11/8/17 11:35pm coelacanth∅:

nor would i.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 11/8/17 11:36pm Funky16Corners:

These being harsher times in which communal feelings are often sandwiched between copies of Atlas Shrugged and the Fountainhead
  Wed. 11/8/17 11:38pm Dean:

These are not harsher times. Rand was publishing her bestsellers in the '40s and '50s.
  Wed. 11/8/17 11:39pm Dean:

Put another way, we're reaping what we have sown.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 11/8/17 11:40pm Funky16Corners:

To borrow an old phrase, "Who is this we you speak of keemosabe?" Some of us have made a lifes work or rejecting that awful garbage.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 11/8/17 11:40pm coelacanth∅:

it still happens though... but how many actual bands get to a point where it's gonna matter who gets the songwriting credit?
...the bands we hear on wfmu that seem like they should go places are mostly never going to go far enough that they can give up their day jobs or collect significant royalties for composition.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 11/8/17 11:41pm Funky16Corners:

Yes, indeed
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 11/8/17 11:42pm Funky16Corners:

And I should say I was brought up to reject Rand-ism, and I bring up my kids to do so as well. It's predatory.
  Wed. 11/8/17 11:44pm Dean:

Shit, I was brought up to subscribe to Randism, pretty much, and I reject it. Nobody with half a brain wouldn't!

I'm not sure the bands played on WFMU whom we like deserve to "go places" by virtue of that fact. They are who they are, they do what they do.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 11/8/17 11:45pm Funky16Corners:

Gotta do it because you love it, much like anything else in life
  Wed. 11/8/17 11:46pm Dean:

Yup.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 11/8/17 11:58pm coelacanth∅:

heh -never considered if this song might've been released as a single.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 11/8/17 11:59pm Funky16Corners:

I was surprised when I found it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 11/9/17 12:00am coelacanth∅:

(...actually i never considered that Garcia ever released ANY solo singles)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 11/9/17 12:06am Funky16Corners:

There are a couple from around that time
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 11/9/17 12:06am coelacanth∅:

lost the wfmu site for a few minutes, but the audio stream still came through. weird
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 11/9/17 12:06am Funky16Corners:

Yeah, me too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 11/9/17 12:08am Funky16Corners:

I'm glad the stream kept going!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 11/9/17 12:08am coelacanth∅:

...i guess i just always thought of Garcia as "album music". (without consciously making that differentiation)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 11/9/17 12:08am coelacanth∅:

...Thanks! have a good night.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 11/9/17 12:09am Funky16Corners:

You too!
