This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

Looked at the title of today's show.....HUH?
(what else in new, always surprised here).
Hey, Flash!

Maybe this image I just added will help, Doc!

Evening Flash, preamble to the show has me thinking an interesting journey awaits. Fave Francis Bebey tracks, where does it start and end? So much great stuff to choose from
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 10/26/17 6:40pm doctorjazz:

Looks cool, Evan!
Avatar Thu. 10/26/17 6:49pm Flash Strap:

Hi Zonk! I know there's so much, it could easily be a whole show... Though I don't think I have even half of his releases. Today I'm just sticking with what's been stuck in my head for the last few weeks.

as for the image, it's my main man Max Ernst
Avatar Thu. 10/26/17 6:52pm Flash Strap:

ok, about kick it off here, just a couple minutes to go

Intriguing image, some parts resemble Australian aboriginal dot painting. Consequently feeling right at home.

Tampopo, am I right?

The surrealists had the highest regard for the indigenous art of the Pacific people, so that makes a certain amount of sense

Hi WD!

Heya Flash, all!
Avatar Thu. 10/26/17 7:06pm Flash Strap:

Perhaps I shouldn't be too surprised to see that this exquisite track has been played on WFMU more than a few times! Hope you all don't mind yet another spin... to aid in fostering a fresh listen, here's a (from the looks of it, a bit rough) english lyrics translation:

Peace to those who howl because they can see clearly
Peace to our sick souls, peace to our broken hearts
Peace to our tired, tattered limbs
Peace to our degenerated generations
Peace to the great confusion of misery
Peace to those who seek
Smashing their head against the walls
Peace to the anger of the hungry man
Peace to the hate, to the rage of the oppressed
Peace to those who work with their hands
Peace to this nature
That has always given us the best it had
That is necessary for any human being whoever he is
Peace to our bellies -
Giant reservoirs of academic trash
Peace to you, my friends, your tenderness is necessary for me
Peace and respect to every life
Peace to the fascination of fire,
Peace to the break of day at the fall of night
Peace to those who walk on roads
To the endless horizons
Peace to the working horse
Peace to the humble-born souls who generate nightmares
Peace to the rivers, to the seas, to the oceans
Who give birth to fishes that shine with gasoline
Peace to my mother
Whose sorrowful smile disappears when she's by her children
Peace to those who aren't here anymore
And to those who had worked hard all their lives waiting for better days

Hiya LD! That was a beautiful show last week, by the way

Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/26/17 7:26pm northguineahills:

Is the "Only X left" new this time around? Because it's pretty darn clever.
Avatar Thu. 10/26/17 7:28pm Flash Strap:

I was just trying to remember if I'd seen that before, but I'm not sure
Avatar Thu. 10/26/17 7:30pm Flash Strap:

This whole record is like this, nonstop vocoder chatter. Really cool. though this is the best track
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/26/17 7:32pm Little Danny:

Yeah, this Novalis is wicked good (and, again, new to me)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/26/17 7:34pm northguineahills:

Wow, Tyndall and Novalis are new to me.

Novalis new to me also.Excellent.

This extremely mysterious Munich outfit uses an invented 7-string instrument called the Filouphone. It's an incredible album imo
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/26/17 7:41pm northguineahills:

Thanks Flash, leaving work, and getting a much needed drink, might make it back before you boogie!

hi melinda!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 10/26/17 8:10pm hyde:

  Thu. 10/26/17 8:13pm zonk ludlow:

This Wessahqqan track is fun, and a great soundtrack for my exit!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 10/26/17 8:16pm doctorjazz:

WALKING OUT TALL!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 10/26/17 8:16pm hyde:

@zonk haha, i'm broad brushing but it's kinda true. there's good reason that the worst, most dishonest people in a lot of spaghetti westerns (especially the Sergi Corbucci ones) are landowners and politicians and bankers
Avatar Thu. 10/26/17 8:16pm Flash Strap:

Hi Melinda!

Hate to see you go Doc!

Very sincere thanks, Listener James
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 10/26/17 8:17pm hyde:

Avatar Thu. 10/26/17 8:30pm Flash Strap:

a gorgeous selection from our old friend Umiliani here, who as far as I know did a ton of cheap mafia and spy soundtracks but not a lot of westerns
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 10/26/17 8:31pm hyde:

yay, Umiliani! I am sad that I don't have your Umiliani comps on my present laptop. those are fantastic.

@zonk yeah, that might be it!
Avatar Thu. 10/26/17 8:33pm Flash Strap:

Hey Uncle! How goes it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 10/26/17 9:02pm hyde:

going back a bit, but that Bruno Nicolai...I really associate him so much more with horror movies. don't remember too many western soundtracks of his.

it's too bad Italian genre movies just cratered after the 80's. so vibrant in the 60's & 70's.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 10/26/17 9:02pm Uncle Michael:

It goes and never stops.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 10/26/17 9:02pm hyde:

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 10/26/17 9:20pm melinda:

I think I may have seen exactly one and a half westerns. Not counting McCabe and Mrs. Miller.
Avatar Thu. 10/26/17 9:21pm Flash Strap:

I think it counts!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 10/26/17 9:22pm hyde:

@Flash fwiw, these are my ten favorite: letterboxd.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 10/26/17 9:24pm hyde:

McCabe and Mrs Miller def. counts. I confess that I have likely seen hundreds of westerns.
Avatar Thu. 10/26/17 9:24pm geezerette:

Nicholas Ray, right? I've always wanted to see it too.
Hope it's in Criterion. We only have Filmstruck now.

Mercedes was really frightening in Touch of Evil!
Love her!
Avatar Thu. 10/26/17 9:24pm Flash Strap:

I have not seen most of those, I'm embarrassed to admit! Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid I have seen a dozen times though, definitely my #1 Peckinpah
Avatar Thu. 10/26/17 9:24pm jefff:

man my love for you was really incredible
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 10/26/17 9:25pm Uncle Michael:

I've never made a list. Of those, I'm only certain Red River would be on mine. No Searchers? I have the directors cut of Pat Garrett right here, ready to watch...one of these days.
Avatar Thu. 10/26/17 9:25pm Flash Strap:

I agree Jefff. it should be the most well-known song in the world
Avatar Thu. 10/26/17 9:26pm Flash Strap:

@G: she's SO good in Touch of Evil
Avatar Thu. 10/26/17 9:27pm Flash Strap:

@UM: Searchers is so insane
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 10/26/17 9:27pm Uncle Michael:

Once Upon A Time would be on my list.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 10/26/17 9:28pm hyde:

@UM i limited myself to one per director. i'm a Stagecoach guy, but i think of Ford as the God of all directors. i's have Liberty Valance on there too if not for that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 10/26/17 9:29pm hyde:

Once Upon A Time is basically a meta-Western
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 10/26/17 9:29pm Uncle Michael:

Yeah...Liberty for sure. Magnificent Seven...Shane
Avatar Thu. 10/26/17 9:29pm Flash Strap:

I think G,B,Ugly and Once Upon A Time are both better but Few Dollars More is the one that haunts me like a fever

Django is pretty high on my list, and maybe Navajo Joe, but I need to see that one again to make sure it's not just the soundtrack giving me fond memories... one of Morricone's coolest soundtracks
Avatar Thu. 10/26/17 9:30pm geezerette:

It's an actual horse opera!
Avatar Thu. 10/26/17 9:30pm Flash Strap:

this is such an enormous jam
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 10/26/17 9:31pm Uncle Michael:

Nevada Smith
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 10/26/17 9:31pm melinda:

Is Jeremiah Johnson a western?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 10/26/17 9:32pm hyde:

@Flash naw, Navajo Joe is really good. it's maybe not as good as The Great Silence, but otherwise one of Corbucci's best. Besides that one where Jack Palance is a pot smoking gunslinger in love with his falcon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 10/26/17 9:32pm Uncle Michael:

Sure...or a post-western...if that's a thing.
Avatar Thu. 10/26/17 9:32pm Flash Strap:

uh, what's the Palance one called, so I can see it immediately
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 10/26/17 9:33pm hyde:

@melinda i would say yes
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 10/26/17 9:34pm hyde:

@Flash Companeros
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 10/26/17 9:34pm Uncle Michael:

Jeremiah Johnson, A Man Called Horse, Little Big Man... post-westerns?
Avatar Thu. 10/26/17 9:34pm Flash Strap:

cool, thanks
Avatar Thu. 10/26/17 9:37pm Flash Strap:

@UM: yeah, right in there in the post-Peckinpah New Hollywood period with Butch Cassidy where every movie was really about how the western didn't work as a genre anymore because of Vietnam and the American Indian Movement. I quite like Little Big Man, I think it's pretty brilliant
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 10/26/17 9:39pm Uncle Michael:

Pat Garrett and McCabe would also be post-westerns. The Man Who Loved Cat Dancing, Judge Roy Bean...
Avatar Thu. 10/26/17 9:39pm Flash Strap:

none of them have real memorable soundtracks though, except McCabe and Pat Garrett
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 10/26/17 9:39pm hyde:

@UM i think many of the westerns made in the 70's are sort of post-westerns. Pat Garrett, Ulzana's Raid, The Shootist, Hired Hand, Hannie Caulder, The Great Northfield Minnesota Raid etc. They are all wrestling with the form in the age of Vietnam
Avatar Thu. 10/26/17 9:40pm Flash Strap:

haha look at that sych-up, UM

Judge Roy Bean! That's a weird one, never knew what to think of it
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 10/26/17 9:40pm hyde:

except The Shootist, which is mostly wrestling with the western and the death of Old Hollywood
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 10/26/17 9:41pm Uncle Michael:

Yeah, that's a wistful look back. An epilogue.
Avatar Thu. 10/26/17 9:41pm Flash Strap:

BIG THANKS TO SLAVKO in NYC!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 10/26/17 9:41pm melinda:

Flash that makes sense, New Hollywood=post-western.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 10/26/17 9:42pm melinda:

Francis Bebey is awesome.
Avatar Thu. 10/26/17 9:43pm geezerette:

There's an incredible Mexican film starring Dolores Del Rio and Jack Palance, set in a small Mexican village. It's in Spanish, which Palance spoke fluently.

Wow, this music almos sounds Oaxacan!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 10/26/17 9:43pm Uncle Michael:

You can't really deal wit classic western without Peck in the Gunfighter, because the whole trope in cinema begins there.
Avatar Thu. 10/26/17 9:43pm Flash Strap:

He is so awesome! in my opinion, he's one of the most important and rightly cherished artists of this brief period of human history where music is able to be recorded
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 10/26/17 9:44pm hyde:

@UM yeah, love that one
Avatar Thu. 10/26/17 9:45pm geezerette:

Also new to me & knocking me out!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 10/26/17 9:46pm Uncle Michael:

And I'm a sucker for Technicolor epics like The Big Country.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 10/26/17 9:49pm Uncle Michael:

I also enjoy spaghetti westerns that wink at spaghetti westerns...anything with Terence Hill.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 10/26/17 9:51pm hyde:

@UM Big Country is great.
Avatar Thu. 10/26/17 9:52pm geezerette:

You guys might like The Big Trail, which is a b&w early John Wayne movie. Thought I'd hate it but it's really great.

Gotta love Burl Ives smacking Chuck Connors around.

Westerns are a huge part of American mythology.

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 10/26/17 9:54pm Uncle Michael:

The Cowboys was a big part of my childhood...the Bad News Bears of westerns.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 10/26/17 9:54pm hyde:

@geezerette Big Trail is good. I read Raoul Walsh's autobio, which was hilariously entertaining and also a pack of lies

Evan, the show went so fast!
