Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

I've seen The Rascals three times. Twice as The New Rascals and once with their recent Broadway show. Such an amazing band to see live.

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 10/27/17 8:39am doctorjazz:

Went to Google to figure out what that $400 TV would cost in todays dollars, it would be about $4000, pretty hefty lay out (interesting how electronics are so cheap, while other things, like college, went through the roof...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 10/27/17 8:43am Uncle Michael:

I recycled a 20 year old tv. It was a 36" color set. If I could have sold it in 1967 I could have gotten thousands for it. In 2015 it cost me $20 to have it taken for scrap.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 10/27/17 8:43am Uncle Michael:

Yowsah Yowsah Yowsah: so famously uttered by Gig Young in his Oscar winning performance in They Shoot Horses Don't They. Strangely enough he murdered his wife and then himself in 1978

Wlliam Gibson knew from good music. He named two street gangs in a passing reference in Neuromancer after musical sources: the Deacon Blues and, checking Laurie Anderson, the Big Scientists. (Couple other Steely Dan refs in his short stories, too.) And there's your science fiction/music trivia for the day.

In '78 New York actually had a country station: WHN 1050. WKHK, 106.7, arose in the early 80s as a challenger, but fell and became a schmaltz station. 1050 is now our local ESPN station.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 10/27/17 9:45am Funky16Corners:

Didn't WYNY go country at some point?
Avatar    Fri. 10/27/17 9:46am Roberto:

At the time I thought it was "call me teeth and booze"
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 10/27/17 9:48am listener james from westwood:

Yes, from like the late 80s until it became WKTU in the mid-90s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 10/27/17 9:49am doctorjazz:

I thought WRVR, the jazz station at one time in NY, became country for a short while when RVR went off, but that didn't last either (could be remembering this wrong, of course)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 10/27/17 9:49am listener james from westwood:

(WKTU, for those outside NYC, is an all-dance/disco/hot adult contemporary channel. Ru Paul was one of their morning DJs in the first couple of years!)

The Cars came along pretty late in the 70's (had that New Wave attitude). My 19 year old loves their stuff.
  Fri. 10/27/17 10:01am Funky16corners:

Those first two albums are amazing
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 10/27/17 10:03am Uncle Michael:

My Best Friend's Girl is basically a Buddy Holly song in new wave drag. That's not a criticism.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 10/27/17 10:03am Uncle Michael:

$19 to go!

Steely and Joe Walsh were all over rock radio in L.A. that year. The Cars didn't make themselves known to me until a few years later for some reason.

Oh wait though, I do remember my brother going to two shows in 1978/9 or so -- the Cars and the Kinks. I remember one of my father's friends saying to him, the Kinks rule, but who the f are the Cars?

i love the joe walsh era james gang.
Avatar Fri. 10/27/17 10:12am still b/p:

I've said it here before, but as long as we're talking about their fresh-faced days: the Cars demo tape was played for a while on FM Boston radio before the first album came out, and when that fully produced work replaced the tape in airplays, I thought, "Whoa, whoa, whoa...too much, boys! Overcooked and gussied/slickified!" It felt more of an unfortunate arm's length away from the ear and brain, if that makes sense. Got used to it, though. Not an uncommon story, I'm sure. And in Cars case, their studio technique was to be like a branding or signature.
  Fri. 10/27/17 10:12am dan:

Thanks for the shout out UM

It so happens that Talking Heads opened for Bryan Ferry's solo act at Bottom Line in July 1977. The Billboard reviewer wrote, "as good as the [Ferry backing] band was, it was not Roxy Music," and of Talking Heads, "a New York new wave band, with a good critical reputation, though judging from the band's 45 minutes onstage, it is difficult to see what the fuss is all about."

Why is it that every time Bruce Springsteen sings, he sounds drunk?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 10/27/17 11:35am Uncle Michael:

because he's a fucking wino.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 10/27/17 11:35am Uncle Michael:

hit the floor tom harder, Max!
  Fri. 10/27/17 11:35am Dean:

Shoot, $6.50-$7.00 woulda got you into the ZZ Top/Elvin Bishop "featuring Mickey Thomas" show in San Bernadino.
  Fri. 10/27/17 11:35am dan:

He's a terrible singer and his songs were done better by other artists.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 10/27/17 11:36am Uncle Michael:

OK!
Avatar Fri. 10/27/17 11:36am glenn:

bruce does bombast pretty good, i gotta say.
  Fri. 10/27/17 11:36am Dean:

Highest priced tickets in the Billboard issue I'm skimming here was $15 for a show in Cincinnati. Guess the artist.

My wife has been having an affair with Bruce for decades...in her head.
Avatar Fri. 10/27/17 11:37am glenn:

heart's not canadian. they're from seattle.
  Fri. 10/27/17 11:37am dan:

Shame that such talented musicians like Clarence Clemons, Roy Bittan and Max Weinberg were in the E Street Band.
  Fri. 10/27/17 11:38am Dean:

Oops, right. Close enough or, rather, far enough from the South.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 10/27/17 11:38am northguineahills:

I always preferred Live at the Budokan.
  Fri. 10/27/17 11:38am Dean:

Anyway, the fifteen dollar ticket was for Elvis.

This particular Cheap Trick tune to my ear is ageless. I adore the first album, enjoy the second...and then there's Heaven Tonight, almost transcendent.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 10/27/17 11:40am Funky16Corners:

It's amazing how ticket prices have become inflated. I went to the last night of the MUSE/No Nukes shows at MSG in 1979 and the top ticket was 17.50 (which was kind of a big deal at the time).
Avatar Fri. 10/27/17 11:41am Dano59:

would be a good mashup with Green Shirt. Speaking of which ... what's the charter from This Year's Model UM?

well, THIS was inevitable. Rochester's finest.
  Fri. 10/27/17 11:42am dan:

Funky16Corners: You have The Eagles and Barbra Streisand to thank for inflated prices. Once they were charging 3 figure prices and selling out, everyone else followed suit.
  Fri. 10/27/17 11:42am Dean:

Yes! It *is* a lot of fun.
Avatar Fri. 10/27/17 11:42am Doug Schulkind:

There's a significant Gap in my record collection when it comes to Mangione.
