@ coelacanth∅: No Ambrosia, no.

@Godfather of Prog: No Beefheart or Zappa either. I'm definining prog very narrowly today, so no avant prog or prog fusion -- just straight-up proggy prog.

@HollyT: Much respect for the question writing; I've been asked to do that and knew I was better suited for other functions. Editing and proofing are more my wheelhouse.

Heya Tony, ditto the Happy the Man request.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 10/24/17 12:24pm coelacanth∅:

he's not american so - not asking if its in the goody bag; but i really like Manfred Mann Chapter III, but i don't know how to categorise it. prog, or fusion?
Avatar Tue. 10/24/17 12:24pm Tony Coulter:

Heya, Carmichael!

Happy the Man is a sure bet.....
Avatar Tue. 10/24/17 12:26pm Tony Coulter:

@ coelacanth∅: Agreed, Manfred Mann Chapter III are great ... and hard to categorize. Prog jazz, maybe? Wouldn't call 'em fusion.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 10/24/17 12:27pm listener james from westwood:

Avatar Tue. 10/24/17 12:30pm Tony Coulter:

@ Nick S: No Dust either. I like 'em, but think of them as more of a hard rock band with slight prog tendencies .. but I guess it's all in the ear of the belistener.
  Tue. 10/24/17 12:31pm Dean:

For a time the Swiss prog band Flame Dream featured an American guitarist, Dale Hauskins, of Downey, California. I used to hang with Dale. He worshiped Hillage, Holdsworth...

We're in territory I'm not familiar with, fun to check it out.
Avatar Tue. 10/24/17 12:35pm Tony Coulter:

Very few American prog bands got anywhere, commercially speaking -- so most are pretty unknown.

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 10/24/17 12:51pm dale:

You don't get that they were widely ridiculed, or you don't get their name? I think I first heard of them on a Southern California prog radio show...or maybe in Trouser Press at the time. I've always assumed the allusion to Gabriel (i.e., Peter) was deliberate.
Avatar Tue. 10/24/17 1:56pm Tony Coulter:

Don't get why their name seemed so ridiculous to people. I guess the image of the angel Gabriel in bondage was considered risible.

  Tue. 10/24/17 2:05pm Dean:

Barclay James Harvest were accused of sounding like a "poor man's Moody Blues." In response, John Lees wrote a tune, "Poor Man's Moody Blues." So there.

Everybody wanted to sound like Genesis, etc., including a bunch of Italian bands, and then everybody wanted to sound like those Italian bands.

I sense that Genesis wanted to sound, roughly, like Anglo church music. Hence Beyond an Empty Dream (Songs for a Modern Church), including Charterhouse Chorale Society's lovely anthem, Take This Heart. The boys attended Charterhouse.

genesis is great until peter left, and even trick of the tail is pretty good. after that, bleccchhhh.

styx means gag worthy, in some obscure language.

glenn, i've tried to like genesis. i have most of their albums. (well, not beyond abacab - if i need to say that!)
...and i do like them, but -just. i'm never compelled to put on some genesis, with the one exception (strangely?) of an instrumental track from the post-Gabriel wind & wuthering.
Avatar Tue. 10/24/17 2:24pm Tony Coulter:

Brimstone was unusual because they sound like early Yes.

@ fish: lots of Hackett writing on that side, especially 'Blood On The Rooftops'

was Hacket the more prominent earlier writer, besides Gabriel?

Liked that Archangel, started off like holy minimalism.
Avatar Tue. 10/24/17 2:37pm Tony Coulter:

The guy behind Archangel was Calvin Hampton, who wrote some very interesting experimental music. He's on this record, for example: www.discogs.com...
Avatar    Tue. 10/24/17 2:40pm V Priceless:

@ fish - I think, generally speaking, Hackett's departure from Genesis had a greater impact on their musicality than Gabriel's, in all due respect.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 10/24/17 2:42pm coelacanth∅:

they did dive into a sea of slugslime after that, didn't they.
  Tue. 10/24/17 2:44pm Dean:

Agreed, @VP. Gabriel's was a loss of, pardon the pun, charisma that Collins couldn't replace, much as he tried. Alas, the only time I saw them live was the first post-Gabriel tour, one upside of which was Bruford. Buddy of mine saw the '75 show at the Shrine in LA, i.e., he attended, but slept through most of it.
Avatar Tue. 10/24/17 2:45pm glenn:

slugslime. fish for the win.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 10/24/17 2:46pm coelacanth∅:

...and - as i remember -a trick of the tail is right along the lines of lamb lies down on broadway.
wind and wuthering is different than all of them, maybe. (or do i just think that because i heard that one first, oblivious to the 7 albums prior?)
  Tue. 10/24/17 2:47pm Dean:

They also did that EP featuring the song "Pigeons," which begins, "Who put fifty tons of shit on the Foreign Office roof?"

I hear TOTT as a fairly radical deviation from LLDOB. WAW is of a piece with TOTT to my ears. YMMV.
Avatar Tue. 10/24/17 2:49pm glenn:

at least they didn't blame the canada geese.
Avatar    Tue. 10/24/17 2:50pm V Priceless:

@ Dean: pun pardoned, but Second's Out tour w/BB? Nice! Gabriel's voice is missed, that's for sure - he had that certain rough earthiness that Phil couldn't replicate.

Yes, 'slugslime' ftw!

Hackett continues to create some inspired music...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 10/24/17 2:51pm coelacanth∅:

hmm, okay. i figured i'd give all those records another spin sometime if i live another 10 years. maybe i'll make it sooner.

  Tue. 10/24/17 2:54pm Dean:

Your mileage may vary, @coelacanth∅. I hear what I hear due, particularly in the case of Genesis, to expectations at the time.

July 9, 1978, Washington Post, an article about colored vinyl noting that Gabriel Bondage's second album sold at least 30K copies, due in part to its three editions: one red, one white, one blue vinyl.
