Oh nice, my favorite cut from What We Did On Our Holidays. How is this song not a widely beloved classic?

Well, in some circles it sure is!

Evening Jeff and everyone. Listening live for the first time after streaming for ages...

Not in my circles.

I love "Tale in Hard Time". I think it's the first really great Richard Thompson song.
Avatar Mon. 10/9/17 12:06am the Canterbury wood-elf:

Good choice for a Tom Petty tribute, Jeff.

Jason Aldean (the country singer who was onstage when the shooting in Vegas started) chose to play "Won't Back Down" on Saturday Night Live as a kind of double tribute... i'm sure he meant well, but i couldn't help wondering: *who* won't back down, and from what? With "World War III" trending on Twitter right now, I'm wondering if that's a good song to be propagating in the national psyche (it was sung en masse in a stadium in Florida this weekend before a football game).
Avatar Mon. 10/9/17 12:07am Jeff Conklin:

Morning, all. Love to each and every one

Oh man, earlier today, I saw that Cale is playing a festival in Joshua Tree. Wonder how his live shows are of late?

Fairport's version of "I'll Keep It With Mine" makes me weep
Avatar Mon. 10/9/17 12:17am the Canterbury wood-elf:

The body of Fairport material with Sandy and Richard on it ranks among the finest creations of the human species.
  Mon. 10/9/17 12:18am Carmichael:

I saw Richard Thompson last year. He sang Who Knows Where the Time Goes, and had the audience in the palm of his hand.
  Mon. 10/9/17 12:20am Eiderdown:

Good morning Jeff and the gang! Great set of tunes to start...
Avatar Mon. 10/9/17 12:22am blankemon:

Jennifer, It's John Cale I say him see him before he is gone. I am trying to go to the 50th Anniversary show in Brooklyn.
  Mon. 10/9/17 12:36am J Dream:

*i hate hearing "before he's gone". Come on...
  Mon. 10/9/17 12:36am Carmichael:

I’m all for the “see them before they’re gone” concept. I missed a few that I still kick myself over.

Cale's playing at Desert Daze. Pretty amazing lineup of artists.
Avatar Mon. 10/9/17 12:41am Jennifer_PNW:

Sam, I know! Trying to find a way to go although I'm not much of a fan of festivals these days but never been to Joshua Tree and always wanted to go.

Oh good, I needed to hear this Shannon Lay record.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 10/9/17 12:47am sam:

I hate big festivals also, but given the locale and lineup I almost caved. The day that Cale is playing also has Terry and Gyan Riley!

Beautiful Kate Wolf song, I'm not familiar with her. Will check it out, thank you
  Mon. 10/9/17 12:58am J Dream:

Desert Daze was tempting for Terry Riley, alone. The rest of that all-you-can-see buffet, while very good, I'd rather see at... not-a-festival
  Mon. 10/9/17 12:59am Carmichael:

The Turtles! That’s who sang that Judee Sill song. Finally figured it out ...

I'm not an big american football fan, but my brothers and my father got me tix to a Gators football game (I just moved to Gainesville, where Tom Petty is originally from), and on the loudspeakers and video screen, in the fourth quarter, they did Petty's, "Don't back down". Every one in the stadium sang it, (including me). 'tis was a nice gesture.

Seconding the rec of Tom Petty's Wildflowers album. Especially the track "You Wreck Me', which belongs in the Three Chord Hall of Fame, and which is To Be Played at Maximum Volume while you sing along.
Avatar Mon. 10/9/17 1:18am blankemon:

Wildflowers is indeed a swell album.
  Mon. 10/9/17 1:20am Hippie Jesus:

@Northguineahills I saw video of that, pretty cool tribute. I've also read that in the past, Tom Petty signed some Florida Gator football helmets to raise money at auction......those helmets are now fetching thousands

'76 is seriously underrated. I'd vote for this all-GD second hour becoming a regular feature of the show if continues to be this well curated : )

Yeah, forgot about the She's the One soundtrack. Not a Beck fan, but that cover was on.

When I hear the Grateful Dead on the radio, I simply cannot change the station fast enough. The music is dull dull dull. I hear nothing original.

  Mon. 10/9/17 2:05am Mark R:

Thanks, Jennifer--that's what the archives are for! I'm puzzled why anyone would tune into a show that has been playing an hour of live Dead since I can remember just to troll the Dead and their fans. No one is holding a gun to your head forcing you to listen.
  Mon. 10/9/17 2:10am Mark R:

'76 was the year they did that one short 10-city tour or something, right? I saw their show in Detroit that year.
  Mon. 10/9/17 2:39am Mark R:

Curiosity got the better of me, so I googled it--the Dead did indeed do a 9-city "East Coast" Fall tour that ended in Detroit 10/3/76, a Sunday night. I was there. They also played some East Coast shows that summer, and a tiny handful of West Coast shows later in the year, but it wasn't their usual heavy touring schedule. They were just getting their legs back after an 18-month "retirement," as I recall.
  Mon. 10/9/17 2:45am Mark R:

Wow, this John Jackson track is incredible. Beautiful set all in all, gost gorgeous.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 10/9/17 2:53am Andrew Waterloo:

No sure if I'm a fan of the grateful dead, but I've stayed up an extra hour here and there listening to these Grateful Dead sets.

Much appreciated, as always, Jeff. Until next week...
