Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

!976 a great crossroads year - Rock meets Disco meets Punk
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/25/17 12:08pm Jeff Golick:

What never fails to surprise during these charted singles shows: the degree to which certain songs remain embedded, fully formed, in the deeper reaches of my memory, held in amber until released once again by the sonic waves from wfmu.org & HDT.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 8/25/17 12:08pm Uncle Michael:

Heh. Lizzie!
Avatar Fri. 8/25/17 12:11pm ndbob:

true Jeff
  Fri. 8/25/17 12:11pm Dean:

@doctorjazz: I've heard her off and on for years, and I always enjoy when UM plays a tune of hers, but I never figured I'd need to collect her records. When I saw the comp used for pennies on the dollar I thought, What the hey? It's a complete joy. Also picked up a comp of Arthur Lyman records. Hella fun.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 8/25/17 12:12pm Rich in NC:

This is going to be a interesting show, back in 76 I was 21 and not to into the charted songs

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/25/17 12:18pm Sweet Corn Lizzie:

I'm on Wikipedia looking at what music came out in 1976, which is interesting. I think of it as an era when the things I listened to weren't the hits.
Avatar Fri. 8/25/17 12:19pm ndbob:

it was a time where i listened to a mix of LPs and top 40 radio
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 8/25/17 12:20pm Uncle Michael:

I may do a series on music released in a given year, that was not represented in the charts...not necessarily singles.
Avatar Fri. 8/25/17 12:20pm ndbob:

sounds great UM
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/25/17 12:21pm Jeff Golick:

@UM: Do it.

(That also pretty much describes the D:O Radio premium from the last marathon.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 8/25/17 12:21pm doctorjazz:

@Dean, was that a success at the parking lot record sale?
(my safe record is the Ella Fitzgerald-Louis Armstrong stuff, wife and older daughter can listen and enjoy. Younger daughter likes all music, as long as it is punk-pop-metal...she just plugs in her phone/headphones all the time).
Avatar    Fri. 8/25/17 12:22pm 23 Wolves:

Boney M is so cool. This is going to be a great show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/25/17 12:22pm Sue P.:

I think of '76 as the height of AOR radio so lots of stations weren't necessarily playing the hits. At least in the Midwest!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/25/17 12:24pm Sweet Corn Lizzie:

Sorry you'll be changing times - you've been our companion on many boring drives along I5 from San Jose to Burbank.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 8/25/17 12:26pm Stanley:

Klaatu. Nice one Unc.
  Fri. 8/25/17 12:27pm Dean:

@doctorjazz: The parking lot sale was a fabulous success, inasmuch as I purchased precisely nothing! I was able to resist picking up some $20 LPs (Roscoe Mitchell, Borbetomagus, etc.). Made me feel like a grown-up. I acquired the Blossom and Arthur stuff, et al., at a bookstore in town with an expanding CD and LP inventory. My thriftiness went to hell yesterday, though, when I ran to Amoeba to pick up Slayer, Led Zeppelin, Brahms, Saint-Saens, Bartok...and something else I've forgotten...
  Fri. 8/25/17 12:27pm Stevel:

Ahhh, Klattu. Wherefore art our happy conspiracies? You'd think fifteen would be too young to sit around stoned, listening to records, wouldn't you?
  Fri. 8/25/17 12:28pm Stevel:

Also an obvious cover for the Carpenters.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 8/25/17 12:28pm Uncle Michael:

23W! Sue! Steve!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 8/25/17 12:29pm Uncle Michael:

Yeah, right in their wheelhouse.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 8/25/17 12:31pm Uncle Michael:

Steve, that was 15 for me too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 8/25/17 12:32pm Stanley:

Oh man, was 1976 really this good?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 8/25/17 12:34pm Stanley:

Looking back, yup. What a soundtrack, I was seventeen and had just discoverd pot and girls.
  Fri. 8/25/17 12:34pm johnk77:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/25/17 12:35pm Jeff Golick:

Hadn't realized this was a single (Bowie). So good.
  Fri. 8/25/17 12:36pm Stevel:

Stanley: I suppose I'd discovered girls too, although they seemed not to recognize my existence.
Avatar Fri. 8/25/17 12:36pm still b/p:

Saw Bowie on this tour. It was actually a slightly bland concert, and, for that time in Boston Garden, pricey at ten bucks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 8/25/17 12:37pm Stanley:

Aw, Steve. Same here. Suppose that's why I put the pot before the girls.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/25/17 12:38pm Jeff Golick:

Grass before...well...
  Fri. 8/25/17 12:38pm johnk77:

price point @!976
  Fri. 8/25/17 12:38pm Stevel:

still b/p: memory jolt! I saw The Who (first concert) at McNichols Arena in Denver, for $8.50. Not an insignificant price.
  Fri. 8/25/17 12:39pm Dean:

We have a few other "safe record" bands: Dave Rawlings Machine, Barclay James Harvest, Bach keyboard recitals. Just remembered the other record I picked up at Amoeba: Paul O'Dette lute/cithern recital.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 8/25/17 12:39pm Uncle Michael:

John! sb/p!
  Fri. 8/25/17 12:44pm Dean:

He's *still* the lead singer of Sweeney Todd, evidently.
  Fri. 8/25/17 12:45pm Dean:

Heard Nick live at the Whisky in '77, I believe. Maybe '78.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 8/25/17 12:49pm Uncle Michael:

Huh.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 8/25/17 12:52pm doctorjazz:

Not so much disco yet...
  Fri. 8/25/17 12:53pm Dean:

I'm 98.9% certain that if I had this James Brown record it, too, would be a domestic "safe record."
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 8/25/17 12:53pm doctorjazz:

How about punk, seem to remember it hitting around then.
  Fri. 8/25/17 12:54pm Dean:

First trip to London was '76. Picked up the first Pistols single, learned about Blondie, missed Gryphon at the Marquee.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 8/25/17 12:54pm Uncle Michael:

I like James name-checking Ohio Players and KC &TSSB
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 8/25/17 12:54pm Uncle Michael:

Punk didn't chart stateside in '76.
  Fri. 8/25/17 12:55pm Stanley:

I feel good, I feel like James Brown
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 8/25/17 12:55pm doctorjazz:

Woman Country singers are usually safe (except my younger daughter, as noted), Kacey Musgrave, Laura Cantrell.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/25/17 12:56pm Jeff Golick:

Feeling like the hits of '76 were BIGGER than some of the hits of previous years/HDT shows.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 8/25/17 12:56pm Uncle Michael:

I'm missing something on this "safe" business.
  Fri. 8/25/17 12:57pm johnk77:

Don't mistake "charted" with "hit". Some were...some weren't.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 8/25/17 12:58pm doctorjazz:

Still find it interesting that there was much funk/R and B charted so far, little disco.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/25/17 12:59pm Jeff Golick:

Ok, point taken. But these charted hits were HUGE.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/25/17 1:00pm Jeff Golick:

@UM: I think "safe" from earlier = "safe for family listening, all-ages car rides, good fodder for oldz and alienated teens"
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 8/25/17 1:00pm Uncle Michael:

Ah.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 8/25/17 1:02pm doctorjazz:

  Fri. 8/25/17 1:05pm Dean:

Right, @Jeff G. I was pleasantly surprised by my family's collective response to Blossom Dearie. It went well beyond mere tolerance, which is what, say, Slayer commands.

Heh, d:O invites mere tolerance at my home. The only stuff that ever stimulates express negativity is the really loud ear-shredding noise I play now and then and, occasionally, really offensive shit like some rap, metal. I have never dared to play what is, to me, among the most embarrassing records of all time, The Mentors' "Woman from Sodom." Shudder.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/25/17 1:06pm Sweet Corn Lizzie:

At a Compaq company holiday party in the 90s they played "Play That Funky Music" but it had been edited to have nothing where "white boy" would have been.

Love this Cliff Richard song....I just played this 45 at a bar a few weeks ago to a very good reaction.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 8/25/17 1:51pm Uncle Michael:

I'm glad people dug it, Sue.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/25/17 1:51pm Sue P.:

Disco Duck is the missus' cue to jump over to our ad hoc jukebox to hit the 'next' button.

Good point about Lou transitioning to disco. Such a smooth song. That was a great set.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/25/17 2:02pm Jeff Golick:

As a youth, in '76, in the Boston suburbs, I heard this...a lot.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/25/17 2:02pm Sweet Corn Lizzie:

I never get tired of ABBA or this Boston song. Go ahead judge me.
  Fri. 8/25/17 2:02pm Stevel:

Hmmmm, Boston. So conflicted. Sounded good on the radio as I ran my paper route.
Avatar Fri. 8/25/17 2:03pm chromaphone:

Did anyone see the footage of Tom Scholtz playing the hammond on the extras of the Soundbreaking documentary? Holy moly!!!!

Ridin in the rodeo!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/25/17 2:04pm Sweet Corn Lizzie:

Cowboy Song is fuckin genius. "A certain female".
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 8/25/17 2:04pm melinda:

Someone recently played a nice version of More Than a Feeling performed by a high school chorus/band.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 8/25/17 2:04pm melinda:

What's the Soundbreaking documentary?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 8/25/17 2:04pm Uncle Michael:

Jeff, we all heard it a lot, everywhere.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 8/25/17 2:05pm Uncle Michael:

Chromaphone!

Nope.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/25/17 2:06pm Sue P.:

The use of "female" in both Cowboy Song and Jailbreak just so good. Only Phil could pull it off.
Avatar Fri. 8/25/17 2:06pm burke:

This song is a really great reminder that no matter how badly we tarnish our reputation, non-Americans will always be, on some level, totally in love with America.

www.pbs.org... I did not care for the stuff about current music but loved all the stuff about my favorite recordings. Learned a lot. Produced by George Martin. Hi UM! The Sholtz footage is kind of jaw-dropping. What a talent.

Avatar Fri. 8/25/17 2:50pm burke:

Was '76 the Year of the Cat? Rabbit? Dragon? Dog?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 8/25/17 2:51pm hyde:

@burke Year of the Dragon
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/25/17 2:52pm Sweet Corn Lizzie:

Wikipedia entry for the song says "The Cat is one of the twelve signs of the Vietnamese zodiac. It corresponds to that of the Rabbit in the Chinese zodiac. At the time of the song's release, the most recent Year of the Rabbit had been 11 February 1975 to 30 January 1976; thus, the song was recorded in the Vietnamese Year of the Cat."

@Sweet Corn Lizzie thank you!
Avatar Fri. 8/25/17 2:53pm burke:
