Tuesday is Tony day! I'll be up in Portland this weekend slinking through the vinyl stores.
Avatar Tue. 8/22/17 11:59am Tony Coulter:

Heya, Carmichael! Be sure not to miss Little Axe, Musique Plastique, Exiled, and Crossroads. Those are my faves....
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 8/22/17 12:02pm fleep:

Come for the tape, stay for the hiss. Greetings from SoCal.
Avatar Tue. 8/22/17 12:03pm Tony Coulter:

Greets, fleep!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 8/22/17 12:03pm JtotheK:

hi tony, hello everyone.

Good Tuesday, Tony and all hisstorians!

Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 8/22/17 12:07pm listener james from westwood:

Cybermen sighted on that blue cassette cover!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 8/22/17 12:07pm doctorjazz:

Hi Tony and hissers...
Avatar Tue. 8/22/17 12:08pm Tony Coulter:

One of these days I should do a show with nothing but tapes hiss -- just blank tapes, or the beginning and end of tapes.
Avatar Tue. 8/22/17 12:08pm Tony Coulter:

Hola, doctor j!
Avatar Tue. 8/22/17 12:10pm Yvang:

If you do such a show, I will tape it... to add even more hiss.
Avatar Tue. 8/22/17 12:10pm Tony Coulter:

Ha! (Hiya, Yvang!)
Avatar    Tue. 8/22/17 12:11pm Nick S.:

Hey, Tony! Right on!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 8/22/17 12:11pm Parq:

Tony @ 12:08 -- wait, you mean no one at FMU's done that yet?
Avatar Tue. 8/22/17 12:12pm Tony Coulter:

Hey, Parq! Well, you're right, it does sound like a Kenny G show.....
Avatar Tue. 8/22/17 12:12pm Tony Coulter:

Hey, Nick S!
Avatar    Tue. 8/22/17 12:16pm Sem Chumbo:

Hiya, Tony, all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 8/22/17 12:17pm Parq:

By the way, Tony, I'm digging the Spain marathon premium. I have family by marriage in the north there, so I'm always interested in non mainstream Spanish cultural output.
Avatar Tue. 8/22/17 12:18pm Tony Coulter:

So, can anyone ID the LP underneath today's cassettes? It's a not too well known album from a well-known British singer with a big hit in the '60s and a bunch of great proggy albums. He is still touring (was in NYC not too long ago).
Avatar Tue. 8/22/17 12:18pm Tony Coulter:

Hola, Sem!
Avatar Tue. 8/22/17 12:19pm Tony Coulter:

@ Parq: Glad you're enjoying the premium!!
  Tue. 8/22/17 12:20pm Dean:

Arthur Brown?
Avatar Tue. 8/22/17 12:21pm Mayuko:

Good afternoon, Tony and everyone.
Avatar Tue. 8/22/17 12:22pm Tony Coulter:

er, "Spectrum IS Green"
Avatar Tue. 8/22/17 12:23pm Tony Coulter:

Hiya, Mayuko!
Avatar Tue. 8/22/17 12:23pm Tony Coulter:

@ Dean: You are correct, sir. Now you just have to ID the album.
  Tue. 8/22/17 12:24pm Dean:

Requiem. Thank you very much, Discogs.
Avatar    Tue. 8/22/17 12:25pm Nick S.:

I got that Brown record. Quite good!
Avatar Tue. 8/22/17 12:26pm Tony Coulter:

Yes! Dean is our big winner!
  Tue. 8/22/17 12:27pm Dean:

A humbling experience. I couldn't have done it without all of you!
Avatar Tue. 8/22/17 12:28pm Tony Coulter:

Here's the Arthur Brown LP: www.discogs.com...
Avatar Tue. 8/22/17 12:30pm Tony Coulter:

Dean will receive the special tape edition of the collected recordings of Marcel Marceau.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 8/22/17 12:30pm Parq:

Saw the CWoAB on -- yes! - the Tom Jones show, doing Fire in full regalia, with the full intro.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 8/22/17 12:31pm Parq:

Tony, does that include a recording of him saying"No" in the Mel Brooks Silent Movie?
Avatar    Tue. 8/22/17 12:32pm Nick S.:

Solid Space is magnificent!
Avatar Tue. 8/22/17 12:32pm Tony Coulter:

@ Parq: Yes! Plus, there's an extra bonus cassette with DJ remixes.
  Tue. 8/22/17 12:32pm Dean:

The Marceau dub remix is awesome.
  Tue. 8/22/17 12:33pm Dean:

He was also the spokesperson, so to speak, for a wonderful series of Pantomime Minus One LPs.
Avatar Tue. 8/22/17 12:34pm Tony Coulter:

@ Nick S: Glad you like it! This was their only release...
Avatar    Tue. 8/22/17 12:43pm Nick S.:

And it's expensive. Looked it up. Damn!
Avatar Tue. 8/22/17 12:45pm βrian:

What was Marcel Marceau's mime type?
Avatar Tue. 8/22/17 12:46pm Tony Coulter:

Sounds like there were around six people in the audience for this Ende Shneafliet concert, judging from the applause. Perhaps it wasn't open to the public, but just recorded for broadcast.
Avatar Tue. 8/22/17 12:46pm Tony Coulter:

Hey, βrian!
  Tue. 8/22/17 12:48pm Dean:

wav?
Avatar Tue. 8/22/17 12:50pm βrian:

audio-less/wav ?
Avatar Tue. 8/22/17 12:50pm βrian:

application/jazz-hands ?
  Tue. 8/22/17 12:50pm Dean:

One thing's for sure, though. He's a Windows guy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 8/22/17 12:53pm Carmichael:

@Tony, been to Exiled already. I'll try the others.
Avatar Tue. 8/22/17 12:56pm Tony Coulter:

@ Carmichael: Good plan. Btw, Crossroads just moved, from Hawthorne to 81st & Foster.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 8/22/17 1:06pm northguineahills:

I love being able to go home during my lunch break.
  Tue. 8/22/17 1:07pm Dean:

Heh, Heisenberg. I'm reading a history of quantum physics, currently in the middle of a discussion of H's uncertainty principle paper. Or at least I think I'm there.
Avatar Tue. 8/22/17 1:07pm Tony Coulter:

Hey, NGH!
Avatar Tue. 8/22/17 1:08pm geezerette:

NGH: A luxury you've earned!
Avatar Tue. 8/22/17 1:09pm geezerette:

Howdy, Tony!
Avatar Tue. 8/22/17 1:09pm Tony Coulter:

Greetings, geezerette!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 8/22/17 1:10pm northguineahills:

@Dean: I read Brian Greene's "Fabric of the Cosmos". He has a way of explaining everything in lay terms w/o dumbing it down. And, if you're so inclined, you can delve into the math section (although he advises that most skip it).

Thanks geezerette!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 8/22/17 1:12pm northguineahills:

Is it true that Staalplaat Recs treated their artists crappily (as in, not paying what they said they would, changing albums and release schedules, etc)?
Avatar Tue. 8/22/17 1:12pm geezerette:

Good west coast morning, everyone!

No more exclamation points from me. Maybe smiley faces though, can't jusy go cold turkey.
Avatar Tue. 8/22/17 1:13pm Tony Coulter:

@ NGH: Not sure.....
  Tue. 8/22/17 1:13pm Mark Williams:

Di Stefano is the name of a famous soccer player in Europe during the '50s & '60s. Not sure this is about him, mind you.
Avatar Tue. 8/22/17 1:13pm Tony Coulter:

@ geezerette: No more exclamation points!!!! WOW!!!!
Avatar Tue. 8/22/17 1:13pm geezerette:

( ...just, sheesh. )
Avatar Tue. 8/22/17 1:14pm geezerette:

:)
Avatar Tue. 8/22/17 1:14pm Tony Coulter:

Hey, Mark!! Sounds like a good guess.....
  Tue. 8/22/17 1:14pm Dean:

@ngh: I'm reading Mara Beller's Quantum Dialogue, which is not dumbed-down, but not hardcore science, either. It's history, dappled with math. I've also read a handful of articles published in science journals, but again focusing on history rather than concepts per se.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 8/22/17 1:21pm doctorjazz:

Virgin P. is a very cool track.
Avatar    Tue. 8/22/17 1:21pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

fokes!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 8/22/17 1:21pm northguineahills:

@Dean, that's like two podcasts I follow, the History of English (the linguistics) and the history of philosophy w/o any gaps. Both dip into the material, but the focus is on the history of each subject.
Avatar Tue. 8/22/17 1:22pm Tony Coulter:

Turnip!
Avatar    Tue. 8/22/17 1:23pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

...and thanks for the record-store hit list up there, TC.

I'll be out there in 2 weeks. Mostly visiting family-critters in the suburbs but will have one day unsupervised to be evil...
  Tue. 8/22/17 1:26pm Dean:

A really interesting history of philosophy, albeit sideways, is Randall Collins's Sociology of Philosophies.
Avatar Tue. 8/22/17 1:26pm Tony Coulter:

Some of those stores are also good for finding rare cassettes, incidentally ... particularly Little Axe.
Avatar    Tue. 8/22/17 1:29pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

sadly, I missed the SOLID SPACE tape -- Can't tell if it looks familiar, or of course we all xeroxed covers onto paper that color at the time. And cybermen were plentiful...
Avatar Tue. 8/22/17 1:33pm Tony Coulter:

There are vinyl boots of the Solid Space tape around. Perhaps you've seen one of those?
Avatar    Tue. 8/22/17 1:38pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

I could be thinking of the first tape by Stolen Government Binder Clip, but different robots. They coulda been bigger 'n the beatles...!
  Tue. 8/22/17 1:39pm Dean:

Took me a second to parse "vinyl boots." Was thinking footwear.
Avatar Tue. 8/22/17 1:39pm Tony Coulter:

Kinky boots....
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 8/22/17 1:39pm fleep:

Solid Space A Go Go
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 8/22/17 1:40pm Carmichael:

Thanks for the book suggestions. I read Hawking's Brief History of Time and became intrigued by the concepts.
Avatar Tue. 8/22/17 1:48pm Tony Coulter:

By the by, both "Arbeit Macht Klang" and the Ende Shneafliet tape come with large booklets, not pictured in my photo.
  Tue. 8/22/17 1:49pm Dean:

Sorry. I'm in a Carlin-esque mood, I guess. "Large booklets"?
Avatar Tue. 8/22/17 1:51pm Tony Coulter:

Yep, large compared to yer normal cassette insert. They are too gigantic to fit into the picture frame.
Avatar Tue. 8/22/17 1:54pm Tony Coulter:

They come in a plastic bag holding both booklet and tape.
Avatar Tue. 8/22/17 1:55pm Tony Coulter:

Plus, if there's a Big Tiny Little, surely there's room in the world for large booklets.
Avatar    Tue. 8/22/17 2:00pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

This REE-LEE, REE-LEE good...
[recalling Fabio's imitation of other peoples' poor mimic of Italian]
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 8/22/17 2:02pm Parq:

Rev TD, I thought maybe you were going into an Ed Sullivan impression.
Avatar Tue. 8/22/17 2:02pm Tony Coulter:

U.P.M. put out two cassettes. Many of the other acts on this comp don't seem to have other recordings (according to discogs, anyway).
  Tue. 8/22/17 2:04pm Mark Williams:

Poor ole Frank R. just doesn't have anymore Kraft. But it's ok. He can live without it.
  Tue. 8/22/17 2:04pm Mark Williams:

yup, this is a very strong compilation. Damn. Must find.
Avatar    Tue. 8/22/17 2:04pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Just recently went spelunking on Discogs to see what old tapes from the collection are out there; funny to think they were practically given away at the time, now are fetching hefty sums...
Avatar    Tue. 8/22/17 2:04pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

mostly just surprised to see 'em up there in the first place.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 8/22/17 2:12pm JtotheK:

i really like the Roland S. "Flexus" track!
Avatar Tue. 8/22/17 2:13pm Tony Coulter:

There are still tons of '80s/'90s tapes that haven't shown up on discogs yet.
Avatar Tue. 8/22/17 2:15pm Tony Coulter:

Glad to hear it, JtotheK! His full name is Roland Schiefnetter. He seems only to have released that one track.
Avatar Tue. 8/22/17 2:16pm Tony Coulter:

... if discogs can be trusted, that is.
Avatar    Tue. 8/22/17 2:22pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

this is excellent-plus-another-excellent.
Avatar Tue. 8/22/17 2:28pm geezerette:

Avatar Tue. 8/22/17 2:43pm Tony Coulter:

In case you were wondering about that horrible noise during the mic break just then: the cable connected to my mic is getting a bit tetchy -- if I brush against it, horribleness results. Gotta take care of that one of these days.
  Tue. 8/22/17 2:45pm Dean:

That's why I tell my kids, "If you have to plug it in, it's already broken."
