I missed Bix!

Hey Unk!
Avatar Wed. 6/28/17 10:08pm hyde:

hm, a Miles Davis In a Silent Way 45. That is like the Alice Coltrane 45 that Little Danny played a while ago.

I just want to go to the bar where those are on the jukebox
Avatar Wed. 6/28/17 10:09pm melinda:

hi folks, can't stay long but this sounds nice.
Avatar Wed. 6/28/17 10:10pm hyde:

hi melinda!
Avatar Wed. 6/28/17 10:10pm still b/p:

The flavor just makes me wonder.....if Gary Lewis had gotten into weed by the time of that song.
Avatar Wed. 6/28/17 10:10pm Uncle Michael:

I've come to think of Gary Lewis as one of those artists where there's a lot of great material...but not the hits...the hits are crap.
Avatar Wed. 6/28/17 10:10pm melinda:

hi hyde!
Avatar Wed. 6/28/17 10:11pm Funky16Corners:

Hi guys! Yeah I was shocked when I found that Miles 45, BTW I like a lot of Gary's hits, too, but his later albums are full of undiscovered treasures
Avatar Wed. 6/28/17 10:11pm melinda:

what was his biggest hit? I can't remember.
Avatar Wed. 6/28/17 10:12pm Funky16Corners:

This Diamond Ring
Avatar Wed. 6/28/17 10:13pm still b/p:

The hits are bubbley gummy pop but seem to suit their pop moment/period.
Avatar Wed. 6/28/17 10:14pm Uncle Michael:

White Whale must have had great A&R. Was anything bad ever released on that label?
Avatar Wed. 6/28/17 10:14pm Funky16Corners:

Oh yeah, plenty of bunk
Avatar Wed. 6/28/17 10:14pm Uncle Michael:

I love breakup-era Don and Phil records.
Avatar Wed. 6/28/17 10:14pm Funky16Corners:

Yeah, this is just beautiful
Avatar Wed. 6/28/17 10:16pm Uncle Michael:

This predates the Hollies?
Avatar Wed. 6/28/17 10:17pm Funky16Corners:

Yes, produced by Duane Eddy, arranged by Warren Zevon
Avatar Wed. 6/28/17 10:17pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar Wed. 6/28/17 10:18pm Funky16Corners:

Indeed. Quite a pedigree
Avatar Wed. 6/28/17 10:18pm hyde:

heh, UM you are the guy who hipped me to those post Everly Bros recs
Avatar Wed. 6/28/17 10:18pm Funky16Corners:

Predated by the original by Albert Hammond
Avatar Wed. 6/28/17 10:19pm Uncle Michael:

I do like to share those, hyde.
Avatar Wed. 6/28/17 10:19pm Uncle Michael:

Yeah, but the Hollies borrows more heavily from Phil than Albert...which makes sense.
Avatar Wed. 6/28/17 10:19pm Funky16Corners:

The Hammond version is weird
Avatar Wed. 6/28/17 10:20pm Uncle Michael:

I have an Albert Hammond single for Friday's Very Special Hinky Dinky Time. You'd guess it, so don't!

Avatar Wed. 6/28/17 10:21pm Funky16Corners:

This is one of my all time favorite albums. More info on the break
Avatar Wed. 6/28/17 10:24pm still b/p:

Get this, about Gary Lewis: "His mother....intended to name him after her favorite actor, Cary Grant, but a clerical error led to his naming as 'Gary'".
And though Gary isn't much different in sound, I think if he were Cary, other kids woulda been more likely to taunt him with many hah-has as "Shari Lewis."
Avatar Wed. 6/28/17 10:25pm Funky16Corners:

Living with Jerry had to be a trial
Avatar Wed. 6/28/17 10:25pm Uncle Michael:

The Don Agrati records deserve more love.
Avatar Wed. 6/28/17 10:26pm Funky16Corners:

Yes, indeed. Good stuff

Avatar Wed. 6/28/17 10:27pm Funky16Corners:

He is a VERY interesting guy
Avatar Wed. 6/28/17 10:28pm Uncle Michael:

This is the 7th entry for Agrati in KenzoDB. The previous four were via me. (I brag about weird shit)

Avatar Wed. 6/28/17 10:38pm Funky16Corners:

And Hi Doug!
  Wed. 6/28/17 10:41pm Doug Schulkind:

One the great lyrics in the history of lyrics: "...all he left us was alone." Amazing.
Avatar Wed. 6/28/17 10:42pm Funky16Corners:

Whitfield was a genius
Avatar Wed. 6/28/17 10:45pm coelacanth∅:

greetings Larry and all
Avatar Wed. 6/28/17 10:46pm Funky16Corners:

Howdy C!
Avatar Wed. 6/28/17 10:49pm still b/p:

When I listened as a kid I wondered if "all he left us was alone," or "a loan," as in leaving them nuthin' but his debts.
I seemed to recall commenting thusly here some time ago...and just found it in one of the Steinski replays five years ago, when I was cued by praise for the lyric from commenter Doug Schulkind! DJ vu.
Avatar Wed. 6/28/17 10:49pm Funky16Corners:

An unimpeachable source!
Avatar Wed. 6/28/17 10:51pm Uncle Michael:

Norman Whitfield brought funk to Motown. That's pretty huge.
  Wed. 6/28/17 10:52pm Doug Schulkind:

I am nothing if not predictable.
Avatar Wed. 6/28/17 10:52pm Funky16Corners:

Transcended it, too, and did some visionary production early on with the Velvelettes among others
Avatar Wed. 6/28/17 10:53pm Uncle Michael:

My favorite thing he ever did was Masterpiece, with the Temptations in a supporting role.
Avatar Wed. 6/28/17 10:54pm Uncle Michael:

I love the full eleven minute version of the Temps record.
Avatar Wed. 6/28/17 10:56pm coelacanth∅:

i saw a band do "...rolling stone" over the weekend and could not have expected such a worthy rendition. -aside from the 4 excellent instrumentalists, the main singer (they all had mics) shifted seamlessly between the different vocals in the style of the 5 temps in their version.
Avatar Wed. 6/28/17 10:57pm Funky16Corners:

I think you have to hear the entire Temps take, which fortunately you can get on the 45. It is a masterpiece of dynamics.
Avatar Wed. 6/28/17 10:57pm Uncle Michael:

How can that full version fir on a 45, pts 1&2?
Avatar Wed. 6/28/17 10:58pm Funky16Corners:

They did it. You have to crank it up a bit
Avatar Wed. 6/28/17 10:59pm Funky16Corners:

Avatar Wed. 6/28/17 10:59pm coelacanth∅:

the 7" single is 7 min., the album is 12.
Avatar Wed. 6/28/17 10:59pm Uncle Michael:

I only know the Brewer & Shipley version of this.
Avatar Wed. 6/28/17 11:00pm Funky16Corners:

This predates it by a few years
Avatar Wed. 6/28/17 11:00pm Uncle Michael:

Tom Shipley co-write.
Avatar Wed. 6/28/17 11:01pm Funky16Corners:

It's their song, but they gave it to the Poor first. There are a couple of Nitty Gritty Dirt Band versions of their stuff earlier than that first album
Avatar Wed. 6/28/17 11:01pm coelacanth∅:

well shit, i'd like to take the album version and mix in that b-side instrumental at the end for a 17 minute version.
Avatar Wed. 6/28/17 11:05pm Uncle Michael:

I'm abandoning the keyboard now. Play me to sleep, Larry.

Night all.
Avatar Wed. 6/28/17 11:05pm Funky16Corners:

Nite Michael!

Seriously, get the Fabs solicitor on the horn!
Avatar Wed. 6/28/17 11:22pm Kris Holmes:

just back from band practice, listening in while rattling up some ever so healthy hotdogs for late dinner
Avatar Wed. 6/28/17 11:22pm Funky16Corners:

Hey Kris!
Avatar Wed. 6/28/17 11:23pm Funky16Corners:

Mmmmmmm hot dogs...
Avatar Wed. 6/28/17 11:24pm Jeff Ash:

Late to the party on the Fleshtones, but agreed on their live shows. They played our local casino lounge 6 years ago. Had to go out and see them twice.
Avatar Wed. 6/28/17 11:24pm Funky16Corners:

Hey Jeff!
Avatar Wed. 6/28/17 11:26pm northguineahills:

Good to hear ISB!
Avatar Wed. 6/28/17 11:27pm Funky16Corners:

Love that album!
Avatar Wed. 6/28/17 11:30pm Kris Holmes:

i always forget how much i love moby grape
Avatar Wed. 6/28/17 11:31pm Funky16Corners:

Yeah, truly underrated band
Avatar Wed. 6/28/17 11:33pm Kris Holmes:

i just had a panic & had to check if i hadn't got rid of the LP.....still there phew
Avatar Wed. 6/28/17 11:34pm Funky16Corners:

I'd love to find a copy
Avatar Wed. 6/28/17 11:35pm Funky16Corners:

This 45 has one of the biggest disparities between A and B sides. The flip is a corny pop soul thing
Avatar Wed. 6/28/17 11:36pm Kris Holmes:

ha, what is the flip? i own none of the 45s
Avatar Wed. 6/28/17 11:38pm northguineahills:

ISB had a renaissance in the early noughts, but then the kids stopped talking about them amongst other Brit folk bands being revived.
Avatar Wed. 6/28/17 11:38pm Funky16Corners:

It's a song called Salt and Pepper which has some Northern Soul devotees, but it's pretty bad (this is the Esko Affair 45 I'm talking about)
Avatar Wed. 6/28/17 11:39pm Funky16Corners:

I think the ISB's problem was the pretty clear divide between Williamson's and Heron's styles. I like them both but it's a little schizo
Avatar Wed. 6/28/17 11:49pm northguineahills:

Avatar Wed. 6/28/17 11:50pm Funky16Corners:

They were also a little folky, freak folky, psychedelic, singer songwritery, kind of hard to draw a bead on for a casual listener
Avatar Thu. 6/29/17 12:02am coelacanth∅:

Thanks Larry!
Avatar Thu. 6/29/17 12:02am northguineahills:
