This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

Evening all! Let's hear some drums to start
  Thu. 6/22/17 7:07pm Paillasson:

Hey man, been following you a while, props for that awesome Umiliani compilation, I discovered a lot of great music thanks to you !
Avatar Thu. 6/22/17 7:08pm northguineahills:

Haven't heard this Folkways, and I have dozens from the 50s (they used to be in the bargain bins up until 2010, if you knew where to look).
Avatar Thu. 6/22/17 7:09pm Flash Strap:

Hi there, and welcome, Paillasson! Glad to hear it

Hi NGH! I wish I could find this in a bin, it's pretty cool artifact, great art with an illustrated booklet by organologist Curt Sachs
Avatar Thu. 6/22/17 7:11pm northguineahills:

Yeah, I had to look it up as I haven't seen this one, and I love these early comps w/ little blips from all over. Thanks!
Avatar Thu. 6/22/17 7:12pm Flash Strap:

If anyone else wants to see the whole package, scroll through the scans on the discogs page, it's pretty cool: www.discogs.com...
Avatar Thu. 6/22/17 7:13pm Flash Strap:

@NGH: yeah I'm a sucker for that globehopping, pins-on-a-map style of musical panorama
Avatar Thu. 6/22/17 7:13pm Flash Strap:

"From Contemporary Recordings of Primitive People"
Avatar Thu. 6/22/17 7:15pm northguineahills:

Happy accident, apparently you can stream this from the Folkways website: www.folkways.si.edu...
Avatar Thu. 6/22/17 7:16pm Flash Strap:

oh, cool!
Avatar Thu. 6/22/17 7:17pm Flash Strap:

They're pretty great about stuff like that
Avatar Thu. 6/22/17 7:23pm Paillasson:

Heard Jungle Obsession a few days ago (man what a great album), is the original release that hard to get ? Disogs prices are crazy high
Avatar Thu. 6/22/17 7:25pm Flash Strap:

One of my favorite albums of all time, so great... yeah, it seems pretty impossible. I don't even have a reissue, even those are pretty rare
Avatar Thu. 6/22/17 7:26pm northguineahills:

Crap, if I was the type of person who would sell my records, I'd consider selling some of my folkways since I'm broke.
Avatar Thu. 6/22/17 7:38pm Doug Schulkind:

My best friend from high school joined a rock band when everyone else went off to college. They were called the Insect Surfers. (Almost 40 years, the band still exists, though without my pal on drums.)
Avatar Thu. 6/22/17 7:40pm Flash Strap:

Hi Doug! That's a pretty good name for a surf band
Avatar Thu. 6/22/17 7:44pm Flash Strap:

I love this funky record, its minimalist groove, it's like cycling through preset keyboard beats
Avatar Thu. 6/22/17 7:46pm Paillasson:

Crazy that I'm French and never heard of all these french musicians before
Avatar Thu. 6/22/17 7:49pm Flash Strap:

They're not that well-known, I guess, no matter where you're from – until you start digging into the library world. It's so wild how library music has its own royalty, legends that are essentially totally unknown anywhere else
Avatar Thu. 6/22/17 7:49pm geezerette:

Hi Evan and explorers!
Finding this music to be calming. The opening set evoked cool greens and blues to me; like those in Gaugin's paintings.
Actually, so does this. :)
Avatar Thu. 6/22/17 7:50pm Paillasson:

I'm also fairly new to this world so that's probably why too
Avatar Thu. 6/22/17 7:50pm geezerette:

...context for above is the oppressive heat in L.A. today.
Avatar Thu. 6/22/17 7:50pm Flash Strap:

Hi Geezerette! That first stuff very much reminds me of Gauguin, the sound and even the LP art reminds me of his woodcuts especially
Avatar Thu. 6/22/17 7:52pm Little Danny:

Hola Evan and all!

I am into all of these motifs, but most especially Surfer's Nightmare
Avatar Thu. 6/22/17 7:53pm Flash Strap:

Hi LD! Just in time for the surf
Avatar Thu. 6/22/17 7:54pm Flash Strap:

had no idea you were in LA, G!
Avatar Thu. 6/22/17 7:57pm Flash Strap:

Love the magenta on that Surfer's Nightmare LP cover
Avatar Thu. 6/22/17 7:58pm Little Danny:

so stoked to be hearing you playing some surf deepies, Flash
Avatar Thu. 6/22/17 8:01pm Flash Strap:

me too, LD! surf just bit me out of the blue earlier this week and I remembered how much I love it, so here we are. seems great for the weather
Avatar Thu. 6/22/17 8:01pm geezerette:

Surf music, so visually evocative. Enjoying this so much!
Avatar Thu. 6/22/17 8:02pm Little Danny:

Have we talked about Endless Summer before? Both the movie and music
Avatar Thu. 6/22/17 8:02pm Flash Strap:

this one is savage
Avatar Thu. 6/22/17 8:02pm geezerette:

Hey LD!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 6/22/17 8:03pm melinda:

hello! I heart surf music!
Avatar Thu. 6/22/17 8:03pm Little Danny:

Hi geez! And hi Melinda!
Avatar Thu. 6/22/17 8:04pm Flash Strap:

next one is some hardcore detroit shit
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 6/22/17 8:04pm melinda:

I was into surf movies several years ago one summer, think I saw Endless Summer.
Avatar Thu. 6/22/17 8:04pm Flash Strap:

Hi Melinda! Welcome!
Avatar Thu. 6/22/17 8:06pm geezerette:

Have you guys seen Endless Summer? It's great and kind of stilted in a somehow charming way. The boys are sort of clueless and nerdy but really love their world and want to share it.

Hey Melinda!
Avatar Thu. 6/22/17 8:06pm Flash Strap:

Love Endless Summer! One of my earliest shows, I spent some time with that Sandals soundtrack
Avatar Thu. 6/22/17 8:07pm geezerette:

Yeah, it's so good.
Avatar Thu. 6/22/17 8:08pm Flash Strap:

I could watch a 10-hour cut of that movie, if it was all scored that well and narrated that lazily/charmingly
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 6/22/17 8:08pm melinda:

The surf-Western connection is an interesting one. I think it came up on Danny's show once.
Avatar Thu. 6/22/17 8:08pm Little Danny:

As usual Flash you are compelling me to overhaul my entire show's selections
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/22/17 8:09pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Astronauts a heavy sound for '63! I'm always thinking about the myth of there being nothing twixt Elvis in the Army & TheBeatles in the U.S. For gittar-diddlers - we know that Surf was thoroughly essential. Fender was a WestCoast company - & DickDale pushed amplifier tech like Townshend woudl take it the next step in London...
Surf & Drag were also early DropOut DIY Cultures - very Punk...
Avatar Thu. 6/22/17 8:09pm Flash Strap:

Ha! Surf begats more surf, that's just a law of nature
Avatar Thu. 6/22/17 8:09pm geezerette:

I love surfer dudes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 6/22/17 8:10pm melinda:

Good points, Rabbit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/22/17 8:11pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...the whole thing of an electric tube & spring reverb sounding - wet...
Avatar Thu. 6/22/17 8:11pm Little Danny:

@RR63: Yep! Very much in the continuum of the Beat ethos
Avatar Thu. 6/22/17 8:11pm Flash Strap:

2 true, Rabbit. And yeah, that Astronauts Pyramid Stomp is a total inferno
Avatar Thu. 6/22/17 8:14pm Walking Daydream:

Groovy show so far.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/22/17 8:15pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- w/ Rawkabilly & Garage vectors...the sunshine utopianism prefigures Psych...
& here's an example of the Middle Eastern influence DickDale has been explicit about...
Avatar Thu. 6/22/17 8:15pm Flash Strap:

WD! Long time, brother! great to see you, thanks for tuning in
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/22/17 8:16pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...another thing I think about is the Spanish influence in SoCal Rawk...
Avatar Thu. 6/22/17 8:16pm Walking Daydream:

Definitely! I always forget until Friday morning and have to play catch up :D
Avatar Thu. 6/22/17 8:18pm geezerette:

Good point about diy punk attitude. Despite recent revisionism, beats, surf and cars were a huge part of west coast culture.
All that stuff was kind of a contemporary take on the cowboy myth.
Dick Dale lives in the Mojave desert. ( ! )
Avatar Thu. 6/22/17 8:19pm geezerette:

RevRab, spot on as usual.
Avatar Thu. 6/22/17 8:21pm Flash Strap:

The crazy thing about surf is that, while all these counterculture connections are there, there's an aspect of it that's basically a continuation of mood/easy-listening music as well (both it's normative and adventurous impulses, of course). Surf is pure music, pure culture
Avatar Thu. 6/22/17 8:22pm geezerette:

Also true. Some spectacular musicianship.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 6/22/17 8:25pm doctorjazz:

Hi Flash and all, checking in, be leaving for the Berkshires soon, Wilco festival, sounding great here in the interim!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/22/17 8:25pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

The whole PreBeatles New Frontier thing - I often think the trajectory towards Psychedelia was inevitable. JoeMeek was tripping hard... The Lounge / Exotica / Tiki thing too... Being born in Nov63 w/ older siblings - it's the period I emerged into, &/or just before it. That gives it a real numinous aura full of strange longing for me - which you may or may not grok whatsoever...
Avatar Thu. 6/22/17 8:26pm geezerette:

Grok it totally!
Avatar Thu. 6/22/17 8:28pm geezerette:

docjazz, enjoy it man !
  Thu. 6/22/17 8:28pm johnk77:

agree w/ lots of reverb+ other efx
balboa is also the name of a dance form
  Thu. 6/22/17 8:29pm johnk77:

surf was mainly regional before beach boys etc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 6/22/17 8:31pm doctorjazz:

Thank, Geez, just waiting to meet my ride...
Avatar Thu. 6/22/17 8:32pm Little Danny:

"Pyramid Stomp" is indeed a Pyramids original. Which is also savage. Peep the Pyramids' radical look: lbpost.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 6/22/17 8:32pm melinda:

d jazz that sounds fun! Would like to do that someday.
Avatar Thu. 6/22/17 8:33pm geezerette:

LD, ha! Mixed message!
Avatar Thu. 6/22/17 8:34pm Little Danny:

OMG I am sometimes so frustrated I precede you Flash 'cause I have so many things I wanna say about surf.

GREAT set Flash
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 6/22/17 8:34pm doctorjazz:

I never did it before (long time since I attended a festival). Going with some fanatic fans...
Avatar Thu. 6/22/17 8:36pm geezerette:

Should be great!
Avatar Thu. 6/22/17 8:39pm Flash Strap:

@RevRab: totally dig what you're puttin down there

@Johnk77: Hi! Welcome!

@Doc: Have fun brother jazz

@LD: Holy shit the pyramids are like scary cool! And dude I wanna hear those things you say, you know like a zillion more things about surf than me I would guess
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 6/22/17 8:43pm melinda:

There's another good surf movie called Surfwise. Not a music showcase but a documentary about a large surfing family that lived in a school bus.
Avatar Thu. 6/22/17 8:45pm Little Danny:

*follow (not precede)
Avatar Thu. 6/22/17 8:46pm Flash Strap:

That sounds cool, Melinda

On the square side of things, I love all those Annette Funicello-style sort of surf movies with the Les Baxter scores and occasional surf band appearances

@LD: I understood. Language is a thin barrier between us, LD, one easily scaled even when the words are wrong
Avatar Thu. 6/22/17 8:47pm Flash Strap:

and GOD this is one hell of a performance we have have here!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/22/17 8:48pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

olá Flash and Explorers

i quite like this bahamian folksong
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/22/17 8:51pm coelacanth∅:

...that < bahamian folksong.
Avatar Thu. 6/22/17 8:52pm Flash Strap:

Hi Coelacanth! I liked it too
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/22/17 8:53pm Ike:

This is delightfully weird.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/22/17 8:54pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

So many people try to be the Coltrane Quartet. Do I mind? Hell no - love it.
Avatar Thu. 6/22/17 8:54pm Flash Strap:

Ike! Hello!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 6/22/17 8:54pm doctorjazz:

Like this a lot (The London Experimental Jazz Quartet).
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/22/17 8:54pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...they're on to something else now anyhow...
Avatar Thu. 6/22/17 8:55pm Flash Strap:

this track, my god. it crackles
Avatar Thu. 6/22/17 8:57pm Flash Strap:

oh man, the piano, that funky break, vibes in the mix... this shit is the righteous groove
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 6/22/17 8:58pm doctorjazz:

Sounds a bit like a spaced out Ramsey Lewis...
Avatar Thu. 6/22/17 8:59pm Flash Strap:

I like the cover of this one a lot: img.discogs.com...
Avatar Thu. 6/22/17 9:00pm geezerette:

oh, that's great!
Avatar Thu. 6/22/17 9:03pm Flash Strap:

Up next, a track from that crazy Dharma Trio LP you see here on the page. That is an intriguing cover, like somewhere between Sun City Girls, Sun Ra, and the cantina band from Star Wars if they ever cut a record
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 6/22/17 9:04pm doctorjazz:

I knew of Hal Galper, but Gal Halper...?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 6/22/17 9:04pm doctorjazz:

OK, catch you all next go round!
Avatar Thu. 6/22/17 9:06pm Flash Strap:

Haha, thanks for catching that typo, catch ya later Doc
Avatar Thu. 6/22/17 9:14pm Flash Strap:

such a shattering electric piano sound, like walking on lightbulbs
Avatar Thu. 6/22/17 9:15pm Paillasson:

This is perfect for late night studying
Avatar Thu. 6/22/17 9:16pm Flash Strap:

killer lineup here:

Bass – Steve Swallow
Composed By, Piano, Organ, Conductor – Carla Bley
Drums – Lonesome Dragon
Guitar – Larry Coryell
Producer – Brad McCuen
Soprano Saxophone – Steve Lacy
Tenor Saxophone – Leandro "Gato" Barbieri
Trombone – Jimmy Knepper
Trumpet – Mike Mantler
Tuba, Baritone Saxophone – Howard Johnson
Vibraphone – Gary Burton
Avatar Thu. 6/22/17 9:19pm Flash Strap:

Just realized that the Dharma cover reminded me of those freaky old sea monkeys ads... those really tripped me out as a kid
Avatar Thu. 6/22/17 9:22pm Doug Schulkind:

I think that lineup actually did some killing.
Avatar Thu. 6/22/17 9:24pm Flash Strap:

I know that I am slayed
Avatar Thu. 6/22/17 9:24pm northguineahills:

Peacock + Bley = aural bliss (not marital apparently).
Avatar Thu. 6/22/17 9:25pm geezerette:

Another stunner of a set.
Got work to do but still listening, it's beautiful.
Thanks Evan!
Avatar Thu. 6/22/17 9:30pm Flash Strap:

I don't know much about Paul Bley the husband, NGH. He was married to two of the most interesting composers and experimentalists of all time, which is pretty insanely unusual, so there's gotta be a story there. Do you have knowledge to drop?
  Thu. 6/22/17 9:30pm billyiswilliam:

I'm in love with this
Avatar Thu. 6/22/17 9:30pm Flash Strap:

sidenote, I love this album and virtually everything Peacock and Bley do together
  Thu. 6/22/17 9:31pm billyiswilliam:

Working late on the deck, warm summer evening and this tune is just hitting the mark in so many ways
Avatar Thu. 6/22/17 9:31pm Flash Strap:

Warm welcome Billyiswilliam! Me too
Avatar Thu. 6/22/17 9:32pm Flash Strap:

@G: happy to be the whistlin' in the background of your work
Avatar Thu. 6/22/17 9:32pm Paillasson:

This is so trippy, love it
Avatar Thu. 6/22/17 9:34pm northguineahills:

I just know of Paul Bley's musical career and discography. Doug can tell you more then I.

It might just be me, but I love pretty much Annette Peacock ever touched.
Avatar Thu. 6/22/17 9:34pm Flash Strap:

this one is sort of holy in my opinion. sacred music
Avatar Thu. 6/22/17 9:36pm Flash Strap:

@NGH: she's astonishing. I admit there's some stuff I respect more than like, but on the whole I'm just in awe of her vision, which is staggeringly unique
Avatar Thu. 6/22/17 9:55pm Flash Strap:

whenever I put this on, I hear that guitar and think I accidentally put on some Sun City Girls

plus, this cover: img.discogs.com...
