Jen Shyu incorporates elements of music and dance from many countries into her ambitious performance works and recordings. But she doesn't just casually borrow a little bit of this or that - she is a firm believer in total immersion. Jen has spent years studying music, dance and storytelling in various countries. She's learned to speak as well as sing in Spanish, Taiwanese, Mandarin, Korean, Japanese, Indonesian, Javanese, and even Tetum (a language spoken in Timor). She also plays a number of East Asian traditional instruments.

All that comes together in Jen Shyu's newest work, Nine Doors, which she will premiere in two World Music Institute-produced concert / performances at National Sawdust, 80 North 6th St. in Williamsburg, Brooklyn on Thursday night June 29th at 7 pm and 10 pm. We'll learn about Nine Doors and much more when we meet this visionary artist on this week's show.
