Once as a very young tot with my mother in downtown D.C., we got caught in some tear gas during a Vietnam war protest. When the robust of chant of "Fuck the Pigs" arose from the rallyers nearby, I (supposedly) said to my mother, "Why do the want to fuck the pigs? I thought fucking was good."

Rosko = William Mercer, New York deejay
Avatar Fri. 6/9/17 10:17am Doug Schulkind:

From Rosko's obit in the NYT in 2000:

Mr. Mercer was the first black news announcer on WINS in New York and, as Rosko, the first black disc jockey on KBLA in Los Angeles. HE WENT ON TO BECOME A PIONEER OF FREE-FORM FM RADIO IN NEW YORK CITY. On WOR-FM in 1966 and on WNEW-FM from 1967 to 1970, his calm, husky voice with its hint of Southern drawl and his wide-ranging programming made him an authoritative companion amid the musical ferment of the late 1960's. (re: "the long form"...the cases of dr. bronners soap came with scrolls of the same literature as the labels; only people didn't know that the labels were actually greatly abridged. the scrolls were around 4' long, small print, both sides.
...and this was when "the doctor" was still alive, so more eccentric, less derivative bullshit.)

Avatar Fri. 6/9/17 10:53am Doug Schulkind:

From the liners:

For me, 1996 was an important transitional year in which I decided to pursue what I called Project Dream Keeper. The goal, to begin realizing projects which had been shelved for years. One such project was to produce a solo recording in celebration of the 20th anniversary of my first solo release, Tenor. With Tenor began a very important solo period which until now has never been documented on CD. Previous LP releases have long been out of print and difficult to find. I sincerely hope this is a new beginning. I wanted to return to the roots of my solo performances. — Joe McPhee

I've noticed that, Doug. You really need to lighten up.

I would like to state my appreciation for @listener james' "Omar coming" comment at 11:29.

And also for this jewel of a show.
Avatar Fri. 6/9/17 11:41am Doug Schulkind:

@Listener Gregory
Found this...

"I couldn't figure out what instrument could produce the sound that Souleyman sings over, and it was only until I looked up the countless grainy videos of his live performances that I realized it was just a Yamaha keyboard played really fucking fast. Paired with echoe-y yells of "Yallah!" and filtered through a shitty video recorder, Souleyman's sound accidentally found itself blurring the lines between folk, experimental, and prog music."

That was my second guess, Doug. Thanks. (First guess: some kind of wind instrument, guitar, or other instrument.)

Jim Lahey has a cookbook about no-knead bread. It really is good stuff.

Freezer on the bottom is the better configuration, in my view.
Avatar Fri. 6/9/17 11:43am Doug Schulkind:

I light up before every show, Parq. Isn't that obvious?
Avatar Fri. 6/9/17 11:44am Doug Schulkind:

Isn't freezer-on-bottom more energy efficient? Plus, you haven't seen my bottom.
Avatar Fri. 6/9/17 11:45am glenn:

that recipe comes from jim lahey, although you probably realized that.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/9/17 11:47am Carmichael:

Annie, cook 'em low and slow (250 or so) for 3-4 hours, uncut. Put some dry rub on the night before, if you wish. wait until they are almost done before basting with a sauce. Let 'em rest and use a cleaver to cut.
