Yo, @Stanley. What's the holiday tomorrow?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 5/28/17 9:28am Stanley:

I'm currently reading 'But Beautiful' by Geoff Dyer. Amazing stories around the lives of Young, Monk, Webster, Mingus, baker and Pepper.

Was that a chicken playing trumpet on the Miles Davis track?

It's no holiday in Scotland, some English business, not ours.
Avatar    Sun. 5/28/17 9:29am Jeff Golick:

Ha. My mistake, @Stanley.

I really like that Geoff Dyer book! I read recently someone else saying that it shouldn't work as well as it does, but it does. That seemed on target to me.

Joyeux ♊Geminian Solar Return Doug !
Avatar Sun. 5/28/17 9:30am Peter from DE:

@Stanley "around" the lives is about right. Beautiful writing but IMHO not actually insightful. Indeed, reaffirming myths.
Avatar    Sun. 5/28/17 9:31am Jeff Golick:

Hey there, @Peter from DE! Long time, no see.

In my own mind, I classify the Dyer as fiction. Not sure how the publisher marked it...
Avatar Sun. 5/28/17 9:31am Peter from DE:

I found this piece of Dyer's in the New York Times to be incredibly annoying.
Avatar Sun. 5/28/17 9:32am Peter from DE:

He takes an obscure photo, claims it's "seminal," and then knows nothing about the photo and just speculates about it.
Avatar    Sun. 5/28/17 9:33am Jeff Golick:

Yeah, @Peter, that was a little overwrought. Trying to get too much out of one image, maybe.
Avatar    Sun. 5/28/17 9:33am Jeff Golick:

(Though I was happy for the light shone on DeCarava, in general.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 5/28/17 9:34am Stanley:

Peter - I had an inkling it was like that. Thanks. Guessed it was fiction but still a good read and has spurred me on to further investigation of these musicians.
Avatar Sun. 5/28/17 9:34am Peter from DE:

@Jeff I agree it's fiction. But it's no COMING THROUGH SLAUGHTER ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 5/28/17 9:35am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

@Peter: nope. That's pretty much the high water mark.
Avatar Sun. 5/28/17 9:37am Peter from DE:

@Jeff it's no dishonor to say you don't measure up to Ondaatje.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 5/28/17 9:40am Stanley:

...and one I've just reserved at the library. (Heh)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 5/28/17 9:41am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Beautiful writing but not insightful. That's interesting. It's a great photo: as much as he always touched my core - the typical image of Trane is pensive & serious: his Music was all the publicity he cared for it seems...I'll have to read it & see if it annoys me!...

@Stanley you're in for a lovely afternoon! if you like to read to music, look for Jerry Granelli's A SONG I THOUGHT I HEARD BUDDY BOLDEN SING (CD inspired by the Ondaatje novel) -- and a great CD that stands on its own if you haven't read the book

Avatar Sun. 5/28/17 10:20am Peter from DE:

thanks! the piano (retuned) sounds more convincing here than on Hafez Modirzadeh's POST-CHROMODAL OUT (played by Vijay Iyer)
Avatar    Sun. 5/28/17 10:21am Jeff Golick:

That's interesting -- I'd have to go back and listen to that Iyer. It's Taborn on the new one, I believe.
Avatar Sun. 5/28/17 10:23am Peter from DE:

I'm not sure if I'm preferring Taborn to Iyer, or ElSaffar's piano tuning over Modirzadeh's

Love that Tzadik, Daft and Goldberg are two favorite, have to check out the CD.
Speaking of Tzadik, bummed out going to miss Zorn in Manhattan today at the Village Vanguard; procrastinated ordering tickets, and they sold out when I tried... :(

Saft also plays a great organ on The New Standard.
Avatar    Sun. 5/28/17 10:45am fred:

@doctorjazz: That it's sold out is a good thing, maybe the positive side is that someone who doesn't know Zorn as well as you do got "your" ticket and will get his/her mind blown open to new things

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 5/28/17 10:52am doctorjazz:

@Fred, true, Dat, I really didn't expect it to sell out, but good for him that he had such a following at this point. (that's the positive spin).

I was just thinking of Colin Stetson too, who we saw play up here a few weeks ago.

Jeff, I think you can randomly pick an album on Tzadik, and odds are good I'll like it.
(getting another puppy in 2 weeks... Will be my daughter's, but she's home from college for the summer). Hope the training goes better than yours did, Jeff. Any progress? (This Little Women is great!)

  Sun. 5/28/17 11:00am Dean:

So Little Women isn't the only outfit letting loose on the floor?
Avatar    Sun. 5/28/17 11:01am Jeff Golick:

I've told this story before, I'll tell it again. Was shopping at Down Home Records, picked up Bruce Ackley's solo CD. Guy at the register tells the gal at the register, "He's buying your husband's record." Then he points out that Jon Raskin was in the store.

Met Larry Ochs recently, did that concert with Nels Cline in a friend's living room. He was very nice. I was curious about ROVA, how much is written, how much improvised,, he said its ALL written out with ROVA (one of the reasons he liked the gig with Cline)
