Finishing up Flash's show from last night in the archives (that was a great show!), will be done just in time for the Drumming class. Hi all!
Avatar Fri. 5/26/17 8:50am Doug Schulkind:

It is an ignorance you share with billions of others. See the title to today's playlist: "Rest in peace, John P. "Johnny Daye" DiBucci." Johnny Daye was a largely unknown soul singer who had a career that lasted less than three years.
Avatar Fri. 5/26/17 8:50am Doug Schulkind:

Don't forget to eat and sleep, Sir!

they're already smart enough.

cats are smarter than dogs. homework tastes terrible.

(quickly tucking my pigtails in my shirt) i'm at a 2-week pet-sit and i wish that air conditioning could be effective enough to remove animal dander from a system.. i'll emerge from stuffiness... and testng out the new concoction of fish cake i threw together a few days ago. one cat has gone to that big catnip bed in the sky, and now there are one, and two little yappy dogs.. all is well with the world, though!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/26/17 9:03am ausmanx:

not sure i'm happy with that segue from animal dander to fishcake concoction

Avatar Fri. 5/26/17 10:01am Doug Schulkind:

Sugar Minott gives your ears cavities.
  Fri. 5/26/17 10:03am Mark Williams:

@ausmanx - re Wackies vs. Perry, I think you'll find that there are definitely "Wackies heads" out there, almost on a par with the Black Ark/Perry heads. What I would merely point to is the fact that Perry's career pre-dated Black Ark by a full decade, and included many influential productions (and vocals) from 1968-74, all of which pre-date the Black Ark years. Unmissable, of course, is Perry's productions of what some consider to be Marley's/Wailer's best work. And frankly, musicians and singers would speak reverently about Perry in a manner that no other producer in Jamaica managed to engender. I think Perry is a Top 3 figure in the history of Jamaican music.

Excellent write-up about Johnny Daye here:

You rang marhster. I've been spilling paint all over the floor just like you wanted, eh.
  Fri. 5/26/17 11:23am Listener Gregory:

"Stirrin' Up Bees"? Why didn't I think of that title?
Avatar Fri. 5/26/17 11:24am Doug Schulkind:

This track, Let's Talk It Over, is all Johnny. Singing on record for the first time in 40 years. He never lost it. Amazing.

My brother once dug up some yellow jackets. Ouch.

Try telling the bees, "Let's talk it over." Good luck to you.

  Fri. 5/26/17 11:25am Mr C:

You can hear Joe Tex in this one for sure
Avatar Fri. 5/26/17 11:26am Doug Schulkind:

OK, here comes 1965 and a 17-year-old Johnny Daye...
Avatar Fri. 5/26/17 11:26am still b/p:

Can only listen for an hour and fifteen minutes, so I need a concentrated righteously dense dose of this show and early Uncle. What's a potent combination of Drummer and Hinky Dinky....? Drinky!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 5/26/17 11:27am annie:

good, i got all my work done, despite the assistance from the cat.. now i get to go sit in the sun and read.. this morning's music really helped mr drummer..
Avatar Fri. 5/26/17 11:28am Doug Schulkind:

still b/p!
Avatar Fri. 5/26/17 11:31am Doug Schulkind:

In a minute, you'll hear how Cameo-Parkway wanted Johnny to imitate the Godfather of Soul.
  Fri. 5/26/17 11:32am Listener Gregory:

They clearly wanted the baritone sax to imitate James Brown.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/26/17 11:34am Uncle Michael:

At the top of the hour, it's 1973 all over again. Please join me.
  Fri. 5/26/17 11:35am Mr C:

This could be his finest..
Avatar Fri. 5/26/17 11:35am ndbob:

1973 - not a particularly auspicious year in my life...
  Fri. 5/26/17 11:42am Listener Gregory:

If he gets a mojo hand, is he going to put the ring on it? I'm confused.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/26/17 11:42am Uncle Michael:

Nor mine...but there was always music.

  Fri. 5/26/17 11:46am Dean:

I'm sorry, but 1973 was momentous for my musical, uh, formation. Tales from Topographic Oceans.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/26/17 11:47am Uncle Michael:

Concrete companies did that in most cities in the second half of the 20th century.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/26/17 11:47am Uncle Michael:

Dean, we won't be hearing anything that uhh...*formative* today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/26/17 11:48am Brian in UK:

Doug, call me pick but how is the flip on a different label? Back to spilling paint now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 5/26/17 11:48am annie:

UM, i'll catch the archive, it's time for elevenses and a good book out in the sun!
  Fri. 5/26/17 11:49am Dean:

'salright. I can hear it in my mind's ear almost round the clock, but without the distress of an ear worm. Took a while to shake a compounded ear worm earlier this week. A theme from the first movement of the first Brahms string sextet kept playing in my upstairs, interrupted randomly by Little Feat's "Willing." Almost had to call 911.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/26/17 11:49am Uncle Michael:

Enjoy the fresh air, annie.

Fascinating to hear all of these Daye sides together, Doug.

A friend the other day said the 70s were great for music. A former coworker used to say we were ripped off and screwed musically because we came of age in the 70s. Parallaxical facts of musical life and history.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/26/17 11:51am Uncle Michael:

I've actually been from Tucson to Tucumcari.
  Fri. 5/26/17 11:51am Dean:

Oh, crap, now it's gonna start all over.
Avatar Fri. 5/26/17 11:51am Doug Schulkind:

@Little Danny
Amazing to comprehend that this amounts to Johnny's ENTIRE recording career.

Janet Jackson covered "What'll I Do..." in 1993.
  Fri. 5/26/17 11:52am Listener Gregory:

I'm embarrassed to admit that I had never heard of Johnny Daye before now. So, thanks, Doug.

I had never heard of Daye before about a year ago when I purchased a comp of rare Stax singles. Johnny's amazing "Stay Baby Stay," which will close today's show, was on that comp.

The Otis connection is really obvious on I Need Somebody.
Great show, great weekend all!
Avatar Fri. 5/26/17 11:55am Doug Schulkind:

Next up is Johnny's "I Love Love." I'd like to think that Razzy's wonderful anthem, "I Hate Hate" is somehow connected...
