I play music that is old and that is new. Some of it is digital while some is analog. It is from many different countries; sometimes it is loud and at other times it is quiet.

Loving the beats & the fox Mayuko! You made me think of one of my classmates when i was learning Portuguese who was a samba dancer. She said she was a regular in the Asakusa Samba Festival...
Avatar    Sat. 5/20/17 12:31pm listener james from westwood:

Mmmm, Kraftwerk....
Avatar    Sat. 5/20/17 12:33pm Mayuko:

Oh that's cool, tmoyo san! I wish I had at least a slightest clue in reading Portugues.
I actually don't know why they started Samba festival in Asakusa, but it kinda makes sense to me. Fits that neighborhood.
Avatar    Sat. 5/20/17 12:38pm Mayuko:

Something sentimental about festivals, cannot explain clearly, but like that happy but a little lonely feeling when looking at sun going down at the end of a beautiful day. I hear that both in Samba music and Kraftwerk.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sat. 5/20/17 12:41pm tmoyo:

True! A bit of sentimentalism to a steady beat.

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sat. 5/20/17 1:33pm Dave in Vermont:

greetings, heard some driving around, but missed some running around, what i've heard and what i haven't heard has been sounding great
It was nice to hear about the Okinawan music. I had a professor whose parents were from there and we studied some Okinawan literature.
Avatar    Sat. 5/20/17 1:41pm Mayuko:

@Dave in Vermont Okinawan literature!!! That's amazing! I have to confess despite of my love for Okinawa music, I am totally ignorant about literature. From which period were the books you read with the professor?
Avatar    Sat. 5/20/17 1:45pm Mayuko:

I've been discussing with Rob Weisberg about doing a guest DJ with him on Transpacific Sound Paradise - planning to do all Okinawa music sets. I hope it will happen soon! It might be interesting to you too, @Dave
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sat. 5/20/17 1:48pm Dave in Vermont:

The class was about Japanese literature that related to WWII. When we focused on Okinawa there was lots of short stories from the '60s through the '90s, some of which my prof translated. Our main focus was on a novella by Medoruma Shun.
Let me know the date and I will pass it on to my professor. I am sure he would be interested too.
Avatar    Sat. 5/20/17 1:53pm Mayuko:

oh no! that would be so much pressure!I'll do my best. & I'll announce the date once we figure it out!
Wish I could take that course too. More and more I feel the need for learning about WW2 this past couple of years. Good to look at it from as many point of views as I can, from Okinawa, from main island, from minorities, etc, literature should be a great way to learn those.
Avatar    Sat. 5/20/17 1:53pm Mayuko:

This is my last track today - thank you all for listening!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sat. 5/20/17 1:54pm Dave in Vermont:

The class was really eye opening for me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sat. 5/20/17 1:55pm Dave in Vermont:

Thanks, Mayuko. By the way I had your water bottle from last year and I was so bummed when I lost it.
Avatar Sat. 5/20/17 1:58pm northguineahills:

Even though it was a vassal of the Satsuma Domain and by 1872 the Japanese Empire, the United States had diplomatic relations w/ Lew Chew (The Ryukyu Kingdom) since 1854 until it was fully absorbed by the Empire of Japan in 1878. Yes, that is what I was reading about this morning....

Great show Mayuko!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sat. 5/20/17 2:02pm Dave in Vermont:

Also interesting to note is that historical linguists say that Okinawan is it's own language, that evolved from Proto-Japonic just as Japanese did, not a dialect of Japanese.

that sculpting sample was quincy jones.
it's from an interview with herby hancock in one of his studios. http://www.ethanhein.com/wp/2009/synth-and-axe/
Avatar    Sat. 5/20/17 2:05pm Mayuko:

@Dave Yes! Some vocabularies we share btw Okinawa and main island, and people in Okinawa pronounce them a bit differently (which I refer as dialect) but it is fascinating about their own language being unique.
Avatar    Sat. 5/20/17 2:06pm Mayuko:

wow! cool, thanks re: the sampling source, Ivan! & thanks for listening!
Avatar    Sat. 5/20/17 2:06pm Mayuko:

I have to learn more about the Okinawan & Ainu languages... Thanks Mayuko for another great show
Avatar    Wed. 5/24/17 2:33pm fred:

Was the one you talked about in the first set sometimes transliterated as Quan Yin? I remember a Mariko Mori video about her. And I also have a small cheap plastic figure of her on one of my stereo's speaker (given to me by a Laotian friend) and a bigger mask on a wall (also a gift). For some reason, people have associated me to her for years
Avatar    Wed. 5/24/17 3:11pm fred:

The Soulphiction track was great, and the Yarn/Wire track even better (I love them, I wish I could see them)
Avatar    Wed. 5/24/17 3:27pm fred:

Belated thanks for that show, and of course I totally endorse the idea of an all Okinawa show. You know how much I love this music
Avatar    Sat. 5/27/17 1:47am Mayuko:

@fred I didn't know what she's called in China, but it does look like Quan Yin is the Chinese version of Kannon, since they both write 觀音. It would be interesting to learn what buddhism is like in Laos, since I read that animism is often mixed up with buddhism there. That sounds kinda similar to Japan.
Thanks for listening! I hope you had a great time at the performance show you went to see.
