This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

Evening to you all, explorers

Good evening, Evan!
Avatar Thu. 5/18/17 7:09pm Flash Strap:

David D.! How are you friend?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/18/17 7:09pm David D:

Not bad, enjoying this piece, thanks! And you?
Avatar Thu. 5/18/17 7:12pm Flash Strap:

After a busy day, I'm sort of using this set to decompress, honestly

I spent the day running a sort of collage workshop for clever high school students, and now I am tired!

gonna get funky in here a little later on though
Avatar Thu. 5/18/17 7:14pm Flash Strap:

I love this album to bits. with the field sounds, each track feels like a different garden
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/18/17 7:15pm northguineahills:

I knew a Japanese artist named Bun, but he did mostly quiet noise music.
Avatar Thu. 5/18/17 7:16pm Flash Strap:

Good evening NGH! I always think your avatar is like a ninja/samurai mask, like Shredder wears

then I remember it is wolves
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/18/17 7:19pm David D:

It is fantastic - perfect for my decompression as well. Funky works though, too...

i told this story last night at the Bodega, but on Tuesday night I slept with a down comforter and had to shut the one window i left open at 3 am because i was freezing. and now it's 90.

it's the lack of transition that's getting to me.
Avatar Thu. 5/18/17 7:46pm geezerette:

Weather capricious here too. Much more humid than it used to be.
Avatar Thu. 5/18/17 7:46pm Flash Strap:

That's insane, Hyde. Boggles the actual mind
Avatar Thu. 5/18/17 7:48pm geezerette:

Dreams of a calm father?
Avatar Thu. 5/18/17 7:48pm Flash Strap:

slight Rick Wakeman vibe on that last track
Avatar Thu. 5/18/17 7:49pm Flash Strap:

@G: apparently! weird title, even in a land of weird titles
Avatar    Thu. 5/18/17 7:51pm hyde:

i hope i don't have to talk about how much i loved Wakeman's Journey to the Center of the Earth when i was fifteen again
Avatar Thu. 5/18/17 7:52pm geezerette:

ha, probably dreams of a relaxed father, still makes no sense though.
Love the music.
Avatar Thu. 5/18/17 7:54pm Flash Strap:

I hope you do!

I loved that record during that same year of life, and I love it to this day
Avatar    Thu. 5/18/17 7:57pm hyde:

hmmm, maybe i need to try it again. i loved it then, didn't listen to it for like 25 years and took it out from the library, and thought it sounded kinda bad. but that was some tie ago. maybe it's gotten better in the interim.
  Thu. 5/18/17 7:57pm Doug Schulkind:

Helli-Lo Doug!
Avatar Thu. 5/18/17 8:02pm Flash Strap:

it is sort of bad Hyde, almost unbearably so in parts, but I have great affection for it. and there are a few passages that really are top-notch in terms of prog's baroque, grand, silliness
Avatar Thu. 5/18/17 8:03pm Flash Strap:

plus, the sleeve art and booklet are absurdly fun to look at!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/18/17 8:05pm David D:

Amazahoy, Doug!
Avatar Thu. 5/18/17 8:06pm geezerette:

Need my eyes elsewhere but my ears are staying right here.
Avatar    Thu. 5/18/17 8:07pm hyde:

yes! the analog LP and booklet are great.

tho it's funny how some stuff ages well with you and some doesn't. i still sure love the Herbie Hancock Headhunters record that i loved then. those first couple Mahavishnu Orchestra records still sound great. the Oregon and Weather Report records? not so much. at least now.

but maybe the latter will sound good to me again in 20 years. who can say.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/18/17 8:07pm David D:

Yes, it is interesting to revisit music from a long time ago. I've been doing that a bit lately with varied results...

Avatar Thu. 5/18/17 8:34pm Flash Strap:

Me too, DD! Gerlado Pino is great. Dig the cover for this one: img.discogs.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/18/17 8:35pm David D:

It definitely goes with the music!
Avatar Thu. 5/18/17 8:36pm Flash Strap:

Highly recommended, Melinda!

Anybody else root for the skeletons (or rather, the people summoning them) at the end of Argonauts? I get so pissed that Jason is just stealing their fleece, like an imperialist pigdog. So good, though
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/18/17 8:38pm northguineahills:

So, Flash, you share the sentiment of TMBGs as well....
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/18/17 8:39pm northguineahills:

"...I'd be fired if that were my job, After killing Jason off and countless screaming Argonauts..."
Avatar Thu. 5/18/17 8:40pm Flash Strap:

I am totally unaware of that which you reference, NGH! enlighten me please of my comrades in thought
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/18/17 8:40pm Little Danny:

I watched J & the Argonauts after ingesting a review of it online that was convincingly enthusiastic. I'm now wondering if I read it at yer website, Flash. Did you write about it?
Avatar    Thu. 5/18/17 8:41pm hyde:

oh, i totally root for the skeletons. i also root for the Talos statue--i mean, Hera says t take nothing but food and water, and Jason steals that brooch. jerk.
Avatar Thu. 5/18/17 8:43pm Flash Strap:

Exactly Hyde! Jason's such a fuckin putz... but what an adventure, my god

That Talos scene is my favorite part

Wasn't me, LD! Did you dig it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/18/17 8:43pm coelacanth∅:

haha Evan i certainly wasn't associating you with Jason the imperialist pigdog!

-i actually have never seen the movie either; i just know the basic idea of the story - that they were adventurers and considered heroes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/18/17 8:44pm northguineahills:

They Might Be Giants' "Little Birdhouse in Your Soul" from 'Flood' (1990).
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/18/17 8:44pm Little Danny:

@Flash of course!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/18/17 8:45pm David D:

I'm not your only friend.
Avatar Thu. 5/18/17 8:45pm Doug Schulkind:

I come from Alabama with Banjaw on my knee.
Avatar Thu. 5/18/17 8:47pm Flash Strap:

@NGH: you know, I've never really listened to anything of theirs, is that weird? Seems weird now that I'm saying it

@C: it's a really hilarious part of the movie that the guy who plays Jason is a total colossal dud and it makes it impossible to sympathize with his idiotic choices, unlike say Odysseus, who is unforgivable in every way but tends to project charisma that helps you get in on his adventure from his point of view. It's a feature of Argonauts though, not a bug
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/18/17 8:48pm David D:

Some comments seem strange when separated from what they refer to. Others are posted on the wrong playlist.
Avatar Thu. 5/18/17 8:49pm Flash Strap:

@LD: of course, why did I even ask!

@Doug: I think I first heard this on your show, actually. True?
Avatar Thu. 5/18/17 8:49pm Doug Schulkind:

Hey everybody, I did some counting this afternoon. There are now

twenty

programs on Give the Drummer Radio.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/18/17 8:50pm northguineahills:

I've seen the original, and if I'm not mistaken, MS3K also did the movie as well (need to look it up now that most of the old episodes are up on Netflix [I believe])
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/18/17 8:50pm coelacanth∅:

hmm, maybe i should go over to the crossroads and say hi to Kevin and the argonauts...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/18/17 8:51pm David D:

No, I managed that this afternoon when I posted to Trouble instead of Amanda.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/18/17 8:52pm northguineahills:

@Doug: I thought you were referring to your weekly digit count. (still have yet to grow that sixth toe, no matter how much I try).
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/18/17 8:52pm David D:

@Doug: That is fantastic! Have you kept a record of the development of the stream?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/18/17 8:53pm northguineahills:

It's embarrassing when you're on the correct playlist but accidentally press play on the wrong program, and then nothing makes sense to yourself, or others on the playlist.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/18/17 8:53pm coelacanth∅:

isn't there an assponys song in which he's thankful that he woke up with all his digits?

I figure people can just cut me open and count the concentric rings.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/18/17 8:54pm David D:

@ngh: Yes and all the cross-talk makes comments seem absolutely bizarre sometimes - but I guess that's half the joy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/18/17 8:54pm northguineahills:

@coelacanth∅: That sounds familiar.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/18/17 8:55pm coelacanth∅:

Doug i don't mean to embarrass you but i did that and there were many more than 20 rings.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/18/17 8:55pm David D:

We gave the drummer saw.
Avatar    Thu. 5/18/17 8:55pm hyde:

@Flash the guy who played Jason (Todd Armstrong) was actually a rich kid who tried to become an actor and failed, became a gardener, and then got a screen test because he worked for the woman who played the mother on the Dennis the Menace TV show. But his voice in the Argonauts film is dubbed by another actor. He was never in much else (soe tv and a film of two) and eventually shot himself after getting addicted to painkillers. It's a classic Hollywood story!

Ah the dulcet tones of Dulfer...
Avatar Thu. 5/18/17 9:31pm Flash Strap:

I didn't know he did that one too!

point of fact: it's not Lonnie Liston Smith, but rather Lonnie Smith, the Doctor himself (who we have heard in this set tonight and will hear again). Probably the 2 most easily confused people on the planet.

Evan, was not aware of Shaw before this show and it's knocking me out.

This set!!!
Avatar Thu. 5/18/17 9:40pm Flash Strap:

there was definitely a time when I had a great admiration for the versatile funk n groove AAND spiritual vibes sound of the one and only Lonnie Liston Smith

I was almost relieved when they turned out to be two different guys, both with funky fashion
