Wild Miles jam
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 5/8/17 3:11am pacific standard simon:

I do like the Miles. Although my particular soft spot is for any version of "If I Were A Bell".
  Mon. 5/8/17 3:13am Mike tp:

Electric Miles sometimes reminds me of Zappa WEASELSRIPPED MY FLESH. LOVE THEM OF COURSE
  Mon. 5/8/17 3:14am Mark R:

Welcome, gentlemen--Simon, it's been a while since I've seen you on the comments board.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 5/8/17 3:17am pacific standard simon:

Usually, when I get home from my current work schedule, all I want to do is plant myself in front of some trash TV with a tumbler of bourbon. I finished much earlier tonight, because I'm training a new guy.
  Mon. 5/8/17 3:17am Mike tp:

didn't realize If I We're Abell was 1956,pretty nice
  Mon. 5/8/17 3:20am Mark R:

I'm pretty sure "If I Were a Bell" stayed in the live repertoire into the Herbie/Wayne Shorter era, Mike.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 5/8/17 3:21am pacific standard simon:

@ Mike tp - I can sorta hear that Zappa-Davis connection, though I'd bet money that neither of them ever listened to the other's records. Heard live at the Fillmore East, maybe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 5/8/17 3:26am pacific standard simon:

The original Miles at The Fillmore double LP was probably the first album I ever stole, ha!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 5/8/17 3:39am pacific standard simon:

There's no doubt that Miles invented jazz/rock (and, by the way, FUNK) fusion, but sometimes I wish he hadn't. Except for Mahavishnu, and early Weather Report.
  Mon. 5/8/17 3:41am Mark R:

I know what you mean--similarly, I love Cream, but I hate everybody who tried to play like them and couldn't.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 5/8/17 3:42am pacific standard simon:

Exactly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 5/8/17 3:46am Vincent Nifigance:

I wouldn't want to live in a world without Lalo Schifrin's Dirty Harry soundtrack though...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 5/8/17 3:49am pacific standard simon:

You the one, Mark!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 5/8/17 3:54am pacific standard simon:

What?! I didn't get a heart next to my radio? Saaad.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 5/8/17 3:57am Vincent Nifigance:

@Pacific Standard Simon Try and catch Ken during his show if you can, he'll rectify it for you. My profile doesn't list previous years' donations though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 5/8/17 4:00am BEAVO:

5 basses, That's some Big Bottom.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 5/8/17 4:05am pacific standard simon:

How do you compose a jazz recording with 5 basses?

I remember picking up a copy of Fusion magazine (out of Boston) with a whole lot of raving about Leon Thomas, and having to wait years to find out what he sounded like. The universe bless the internwt.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 5/8/17 4:05am Vincent Nifigance:

@BEAVO Hi Beavo.
  Mon. 5/8/17 4:05am Mark R:

Yeah, I don't really hear 5 basses there, but that's what the credits say--they're listed individually by track, too, so it wasn't like 5 guys played over the course of the album, but according to the credits, these 5 guys played bass ON ONE SONG!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 5/8/17 4:09am BEAVO:

Hi Vince, Mark and all Music lovers in the FMU land, the jar is under the bed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 5/8/17 4:13am pacific standard simon:

Marathoned through the 4 disc Zappa at Carnegie Hall 1971 last night. Pretty much definitive for the period.
  Mon. 5/8/17 4:14am Mark R:

Sounds amazing, Simon--wasn't aware of that recording!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 5/8/17 4:16am BEAVO:

The Zappa And Miles sets are on my grocery list.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 5/8/17 4:19am BEAVO:

Moterhead passed on Xmas day 2011. RIP
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 5/8/17 4:21am pacific standard simon:

I love this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 5/8/17 4:24am BEAVO:

'71 was the Flo and Eddie band, bet they did a Carnigie Hall version of "The Groupie Routine".
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 5/8/17 4:25am BEAVO:

Billy The Mountain.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 5/8/17 4:26am BEAVO:

Ethyl was a tree growing out of his shoulder.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 5/8/17 4:27am Vincent Nifigance:

@Beavo. My Dad always said I couldn't listen to Billy The Mountain until I was old enough. I'm old enough now!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 5/8/17 4:28am joeray:

The Muhal Richard Abrams reminds me of Zappa's Petit Wazoo compositions.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 5/8/17 4:30am Scraps:

I'm here, man.

Lying back down now. Cheers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 5/8/17 4:34am pacific standard simon:

The groupie routine was mostly limited to a "She Painted Up Her Face/Half a Dozen Provocative Squats/Shove It Right In" medley. The Sofa side is the cool shit, and "Billy The Mountain " without most of the west coast references.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 5/8/17 4:34am Scraps:

Have Blu Blu Blu, he added.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 5/8/17 4:39am pacific standard simon:

Playing the Stones next to Robert Johnson is always correct.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 5/8/17 4:44am pacific standard simon:

I could use some Son House about now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 5/8/17 4:48am Guido from Cologne:

Good morning Mark & everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 5/8/17 4:49am Vincent Nifigance:

Hi Guido.
  Mon. 5/8/17 4:49am Mark R:

Welcome, Guido. Hi, Vincent!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 5/8/17 4:57am pacific standard simon:

Love the Danny Whitten configuration of Crazy Horse.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 5/8/17 5:19am Sem Chumbo:

Good morning, Mark. How lovely just at sunrise to hear Casals. Thanks.
  Mon. 5/8/17 5:20am Mark R:

Glad you enjoyed it, Sem.
  Mon. 5/8/17 5:38am Ajay:

  Mon. 5/8/17 5:39am Mark R:

Morning, Ajay!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 5/8/17 5:47am Sem Chumbo:

Vamping up a storm. I wonder what Jim is doing all this time.
  Mon. 5/8/17 5:50am Mark R:

Jim is doing 4 fat lines, half a joint, and 2 healthy slugs of Jack.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 5/8/17 5:52am Sem Chumbo:

Hahaha.
