another long Drumming day, and, batting lead off, Tony! Hi!
Avatar Tue. 5/9/17 12:02pm Tony Coulter:

Greetings, all! It's time to hiss and roll!!
Avatar Tue. 5/9/17 12:02pm Tony Coulter:

Heya, doctorjazz!
  Tue. 5/9/17 12:04pm Dean:

Had a dream this morning that you had moved to Berkeley, Tony, where you streamed your show from a retail stereo equipment space, pretty much around the clock. A fellow listener visited the space wielding a newspaper with a headline about the best pizza in the East Bay. Listener asked where one could find good vegetarian pizza in the area, suitable for freezing. Unable to answer, I awoke, at which time I promptly thought of Cheeseboard.
  Tue. 5/9/17 12:06pm JtotheK:

Hi Tony, hi everyone.
Avatar Tue. 5/9/17 12:07pm Tony Coulter:

Hey hey, Dean and JtotheK!!
Avatar Tue. 5/9/17 12:09pm glenn:

dean has... "odd" dreams.
Avatar Tue. 5/9/17 12:09pm glenn:

mine usually involve either cats, tools or rene russo.
  Tue. 5/9/17 12:10pm Dean:

Well, the stereo equipment store part is run-of-the-mill wish fulfillment.
Avatar Tue. 5/9/17 12:11pm Tony Coulter:

Ahoy, Glenn!

I like the pizza part of Dean's dream. I hope I get it for free, at least, if I have to broadcast 24 hours a day.
Avatar Tue. 5/9/17 12:12pm glenn:

and i'm pretty sure my g.f. prefers me dreaming about rene than buying something else by festool.
Avatar Tue. 5/9/17 12:14pm V Priceless:

hey Tony, all
Avatar Tue. 5/9/17 12:15pm Tony Coulter:

I've never had more than barely adequate stereo equipment. All my disposable income goes to stuff to play on stereo equipment, not the equipment itself, sadly.
Avatar Tue. 5/9/17 12:15pm Tony Coulter:

Greetings, VP!
  Tue. 5/9/17 12:16pm Dean:

Cheeseboard is quintessential Berkeley. It's a co-op cheese shop, the antithesis of the Monty Python routine: they have everything. The adjacent pizza shop makes one variety of pizza per day, always vegetarian, take it or leave it. Customers queue up a quarter block out the store. A spin-off pizza joint, Sliver, takes a similar approach.
Avatar Tue. 5/9/17 12:17pm glenn:

not to worry, tony. generally by the time most people can afford really good audio equipment, their hearing has deteriorated to the point where it doesn't matter.
Avatar Tue. 5/9/17 12:19pm Tony Coulter:

By the way, forgot to mention that both sides of this X-Ray Pop cassette cut off abruptly, mid-song.
Avatar Tue. 5/9/17 12:21pm Tony Coulter:

Not bloody likely, I know, but ... can anyone I.D. the LP underneath today's cassettes?
Avatar Tue. 5/9/17 12:21pm Doug Schulkind:

Mmmm, cheese! Mmmmm, Tape Hiss!
  Tue. 5/9/17 12:21pm Dean:

I was once very proud of my stereo system, felt it sounded better than no-holds-barred systems I'd heard. Haven't been able to upgrade any components for some time. But yeah, I spend too much on the records.
Avatar Tue. 5/9/17 12:22pm listener james from westwood:

Swingin' in a bit late but happy to be here! Pizza and stereo gear for all of my crew!
Avatar Tue. 5/9/17 12:22pm Tony Coulter:

Mr. Doug!! Hey there!
Avatar Tue. 5/9/17 12:24pm Tony Coulter:

and .. greetings, James!!
Avatar Tue. 5/9/17 12:29pm Tony Coulter:

Talking of buying things to play on the stereo system, I recently scored a nice big batch of cassettes. You here will be the beneficiaries -- or victims, as the case may be.
Avatar Tue. 5/9/17 12:35pm Tony Coulter:

Well, since no one is venturing a guess as to what today's mystery LP is, I'll spill the beans: It's Steaming Coils: "Breaded" www.discogs.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 5/9/17 12:39pm doctorjazz:

Of course I knew that, just giving the others a chance... :)
Avatar Tue. 5/9/17 12:40pm glenn:

oh right, steaming coils. i have all their stuff.
Avatar Tue. 5/9/17 12:40pm Tony Coulter:

A note for all you sticklers: X-Ray Pop sometimes spells their name without a hyphen, as on the cover of this tape. I'm a hyphen man, though, so I'm using it.
  Tue. 5/9/17 12:42pm Dean:

Hyphen-man!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 5/9/17 12:44pm doctorjazz:

Audio nerd myself, tend to headphones more than anything else these days (and, too much music coming in, as seems to be the case here).
Avatar Tue. 5/9/17 12:50pm Tony Coulter:

Squeaky toy solo here.....
  Tue. 5/9/17 12:55pm Mark Williams:

just tuning in, Tony. I had a little phase with this band years ago.
  Tue. 5/9/17 12:56pm Mark Williams:

Looking back at them, it's curious to think of just where the line between pop and underground was drawn for them. In the US, it was RRRecords of all people that "broke" them.
Avatar Tue. 5/9/17 12:57pm Tony Coulter:

Hey, Mark!

RRR does seem like an odd fit for them!
Avatar Tue. 5/9/17 12:57pm listener james from westwood:

Hyphen-Man is the sort of superhero this copy editor can believe in!
Avatar Tue. 5/9/17 12:58pm Tony Coulter:

Able to bridge two words in a single leap!
Avatar Tue. 5/9/17 12:59pm βrian:

There are times when I'm feeling a little fancy and whip out Aunt Em Dash.
  Tue. 5/9/17 1:00pm JtotheK:

also part of the 'barely adequate' audio equipment club. I've had 2 numark direct drive turntables for close to 15 years. I can tell the motor on each need replacement...but hoping they hold out for a little while longer. Also hoping that area shop in town could perform the repair. Otherwise if the parts aren't available and both need replacement... ugh.
Avatar Tue. 5/9/17 1:01pm βrian:

Not a big fan of hyphenated spousal names, though. I mean, with successive generations things can get really messy.
Avatar Tue. 5/9/17 1:02pm Tony Coulter:

Greetings, βrian!
Avatar Tue. 5/9/17 1:05pm Tony Coulter:

@ Mark: Given that RRR are mostly known for harsh noise and such, I guess it's to their credit that they wanted to release something as unmacho and "cute" as X-Ray Pop.
Avatar Tue. 5/9/17 1:07pm βrian:

Lemony Hummus, by the way, from the Mediterranean Cafe.
Avatar Tue. 5/9/17 1:07pm Chris from DC:

Oh hey, X-Ray Pop, nice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 5/9/17 1:07pm doctorjazz:

x-ray pop are fun.
  Tue. 5/9/17 1:07pm Mark Williams:

i recall talking to the RRR guy about them, because I wanted his help in finding another LP of theirs (pre-internet struggles). I can't recall exactly the conversation, but my recollection was that he seemed to know almost nothing about them.
Avatar Tue. 5/9/17 1:07pm Tony Coulter:

Hey, Chris!!
Avatar Tue. 5/9/17 1:18pm Tony Coulter:

By the way, the crookedness on the right edge of the cover of this Cage of Reason tape is not a trick of the camera. The cover is handmade and handcut -- handcut by someone who doesn't believe in straight lines.
Avatar Tue. 5/9/17 1:26pm βrian:

Why, it's artisanal!
  Tue. 5/9/17 1:42pm Dean:

Coincidentally, I listened to a piece by Honegger yesterday, but not Pacific 231.
Avatar Tue. 5/9/17 1:43pm Tony Coulter:

The track up next is a rather surprising cover for these guys....
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 5/9/17 1:43pm annie:

hey, i'm sitting in the back of the room..!! see me, teach?
Avatar Tue. 5/9/17 1:44pm Tony Coulter:

I see you! Sit up straight!! (Hey, Annie!)
  Tue. 5/9/17 1:45pm Dean:

A surprising cover for anybody!
Avatar Tue. 5/9/17 1:46pm V Priceless:

whoa
  Tue. 5/9/17 1:47pm Psychspaniolos:

Hello all...and Tony
Avatar Tue. 5/9/17 1:47pm Tony Coulter:

Hey there, Psychspaniolos!
Avatar Tue. 5/9/17 1:53pm Chris from DC:

Oh this is awesome.
  Tue. 5/9/17 1:59pm Psychspaniolos:

interesting
Avatar Tue. 5/9/17 2:22pm Tony Coulter:

So, next week I'll be debuting a new feature on this show: the weird-records-from-my-basement hour. I've got many boxes of strange LPs down there and I need to plow through them -- have barely heard a lot of them myself. I'm sure some of them are actually unknown gems -- others are probably just ... different.
Avatar Tue. 5/9/17 2:24pm Cecile:

holaaa
Avatar Tue. 5/9/17 2:25pm Tony Coulter:

Cecile! Hola-la-la-la!
Avatar Tue. 5/9/17 2:25pm Cecile:

been a crazy week or three.
Avatar Tue. 5/9/17 2:29pm Tony Coulter:

Not bad crazy, I hope....
Avatar Tue. 5/9/17 2:30pm Cecile:

Just kind of weird.
  Tue. 5/9/17 2:31pm Dean:

You're calling it weird-records-from-my-basement for one reason: the hyphens.
Avatar Tue. 5/9/17 2:32pm Tony Coulter:

Yes: I was jonesing for hyphens.
  Tue. 5/9/17 2:33pm epizootics:

Hello, nice show thus far!
Avatar Tue. 5/9/17 2:33pm Tony Coulter:

And here is this side's first cover....
Avatar Tue. 5/9/17 2:34pm Tony Coulter:

Thanks, epizootics -- and, greets!
  Tue. 5/9/17 2:35pm epizootics:

From Genesis and the Stones to the Virgin Prunes!
Avatar Tue. 5/9/17 2:36pm Tony Coulter:

... and don't forget I Roy!
  Tue. 5/9/17 2:40pm Dean:

Hey, MLK, Jr., had a dream, too!
  Tue. 5/9/17 2:45pm JtotheK:

Enjoyed the show, thanks Tony!
Avatar Tue. 5/9/17 2:47pm Tony Coulter:

Glad to hear it, JtotheK! Stick around for Red Bird ... and Cheyenne!!
Avatar Tue. 5/9/17 2:47pm northguineahills:

Nice Trevor Wishart!
Avatar Tue. 5/9/17 2:48pm Tony Coulter:

Hey, NGH! Yeah -- sorry I don't have time to play the whole thing!
  Tue. 5/9/17 2:52pm Dean:

Wow, Paul Hillier, former leader of Hilliard Ensemble and current director of Theater of Voices, sings on Anticredos.
Avatar Tue. 5/9/17 2:52pm Tony Coulter:

Here the playlist link for Cheyenne's first new show -- which starts in 8 minutes!! wfmu.org...
Avatar Tue. 5/9/17 2:58pm listener james from westwood:

Thanks, Tony!
Avatar Tue. 5/9/17 3:04pm Tony Coulter:

Hmm. Comments and the accuplaylist stopped working for me at the end of the show, for some reason. So I'm saying my goodbyes now! See you next week....
