Listener comments!

Avatar Sun. 5/7/17 9:01am fred:

Good morning Jeff and listeners
Avatar Sun. 5/7/17 9:02am Jeff Golick:

Hello, @fred! How are you feeling this afternoon?
Avatar Sun. 5/7/17 9:02am Dave in Vermont:

This is melding remarkably well with the other Jeff's opening track.
Avatar Sun. 5/7/17 9:02am Jeff Golick:

Double Jeff power: activate! Morning, @Dave in VT!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 5/7/17 9:04am Andrew Waterloo:

good morning
Avatar Sun. 5/7/17 9:04am fred:

I'll confess I'm quite stressed out over that election thingie
Avatar Sun. 5/7/17 9:06am Jeff Golick:

Hiya, @Andrew Waterloo! Welcome.
Avatar Sun. 5/7/17 9:06am Jeff Golick:

@fred: I'd imagine so. I almost asked "how anxious are you?"
Avatar Sun. 5/7/17 9:09am fred:

Yeah, anxious is the word. When the best outcome is an investment banker with a "right to work" mindset is the best option, all that remains is hoping to avoid the worst
Avatar Sun. 5/7/17 9:13am fred:

Clicky-star for this Jim Black AlasNoAxis track, nonetheless
Avatar Sun. 5/7/17 9:14am Jeff Golick:

"hoping to avoid the worst" has been my 2017 mantra.
Avatar Sun. 5/7/17 9:15am Dave in Vermont:

Have there been preliminary numbers, Fred? The vote is today?
Avatar Sun. 5/7/17 9:19am fred:

@Dave: By law there can be no preliminary numbers here, no polls or even opinion pieces. Turnout at noon is lower than in the last presidential election, which is ominous, because the fascists are definitely voting
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 5/7/17 9:19am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Wull the U.S. Election had to be simply the Worst Ever. I rant @ people that 'The Lesser of Two Evils' became the incessant chant - but Less Evil is in fact what I want! It's no small thing! But it was absolutely nothing short of a tortuous Election Cycle...w/ a Tortuous Result. It has made the focus starkly clear to me how far the supposed 'Left' gave ground - & how Sold Out the whole System is...& how rotten the great United States has become generally - & in fact the World...
Avatar Sun. 5/7/17 9:20am fred:

@RevRab: Worst Ever? Hold our beer
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 5/7/17 9:20am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

In the U.S., lower turnout *very* reliably favors the Right.
Avatar Sun. 5/7/17 9:21am Dave in Vermont:

Best joke of the week, @fred.
Avatar Sun. 5/7/17 9:22am Jeff Golick:

Yup I LOL'd.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 5/7/17 9:24am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I was barely old enuff to be aware for the Nixon era...sure - they're all terrible - & getting worse as more & more money pours into them w/ all regulation removed...imagine outlawing Polls in Murica!...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 5/7/17 9:27am melinda:

Good morning.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 5/7/17 9:27am Brian in UK:

Quick hello folks.

@fred I feel for you. In one month we have our elections. I fear a landslide for the Conservatives. There should always be a strong opposition and a manageable majority to avoid extreme actions.
Avatar Sun. 5/7/17 9:27am Jeff Golick:

Morning, @melinda! Hello, @Brian in UK!
Avatar Sun. 5/7/17 9:28am Jeff Golick:

One sad, cynical thing is that it is so very hard to imagine that any politician at the national level is actually working on behalf of his or her (but mostly his) constituents.

Perhaps it was always thus?
Avatar Sun. 5/7/17 9:29am Dave in Vermont:

I've been getting excited about Alvin Lucier lately.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 5/7/17 9:29am Brian in UK:

Jeff, taken as read. (Better red than dead)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 5/7/17 9:30am Brian in UK:

Gotta go. Good luck, fred.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 5/7/17 9:31am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

In the U.S. particularly - it's always been a question of the Capitalist Biz power vs. the People's sway in Gubmint. Teddy Roosevelt pulled it back from the Railroad Robber Barons. It's not unprecedented - but the Cold War really set off a pathological reaction to Socialism in Murica.
Avatar Sun. 5/7/17 9:31am Jeff Golick:

Bye, @Brian! Thanks for stopping by.
Avatar Sun. 5/7/17 9:31am Dave in Vermont:

Whatever happens, Fred, we'll be here dealing with our own shit. So, good luck.
Avatar Sun. 5/7/17 9:32am Jeff Golick:

Yeah, @Dave. It's an obsessive kind of thing.
Avatar Sun. 5/7/17 9:32am northguineahills:

I'm never going to have time to listen to all of these links!
Avatar Sun. 5/7/17 9:33am Jeff Golick:

Hey, it's @northguineahills! 'Morning to you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 5/7/17 9:33am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...& Government generally is paying other people to take care of decisions we're not disposed to - & then those people liking the job & the benefits probably too much...
Avatar Sun. 5/7/17 9:35am Jeff Golick:

Follow the money has never not been true.

Saw Hamilton last week. Fantastic. There's a money narrative in there, too, though that is not really brought out (not a fault of the show by any means).
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 5/7/17 9:37am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...& appealing to the most base & the worst of Society's instincts to be elected...
Avatar Sun. 5/7/17 9:37am fred:

I guess saying Worst Ever is wrong, this guy has the record safe, even if Le Pen wins: en.wikipedia.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 5/7/17 9:38am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Indeed - the Nazis were ELECTED. Of course unfairly - whatever that means. Partly because too many other Parties divided the vote (nothing to learn from there)...
Avatar Sun. 5/7/17 9:39am Jeff Golick:

If Lucier didn't send 'em running for the hills, then Van surely will.
Avatar Sun. 5/7/17 9:41am fred:

I'm usually not into Van Morrison at all, but this isn't bad
Avatar Sun. 5/7/17 9:42am Jeff Golick:

It's a tough grading scale when "not genocidal" gets you good marks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 5/7/17 9:44am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Lots of Van derives more from Jazz than Rawk...
Avatar Sun. 5/7/17 9:44am fred:

@Jeff: that's what it came down to over here, and yet many students at work were more focused on being #woke. It could go either way
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 5/7/17 9:47am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

It's like people supporting Drumpf for a Change. Their instinct is correct - but they're background & follow-thru completely lacking & lame...WWII followed the Depression - it's no mystery really - but that's just too long ago now to register...
Avatar Sun. 5/7/17 9:47am Dave in Vermont:

(having a moment of tearful thanks here for how great fmu is)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 5/7/17 9:48am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...no insight into how we got here, in other words...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 5/7/17 9:50am Andrew Waterloo:

Trump is definitely proof that the people get the government they deserve
Avatar Sun. 5/7/17 9:52am fred:

@Andrew Waterloo: that's downright scary to me today
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 5/7/17 9:54am annie:

i'm always grateful for the email reminders, doug. g'mornin' all!
Avatar Sun. 5/7/17 9:55am Jeff Golick:

Hello and welcome, @annie!
  Sun. 5/7/17 9:55am Doctorjazz:

hi all! got here just in time for Breuker, cool! Saw the Kollektief a few times, they were really fun to see.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 5/7/17 9:55am Andrew Waterloo:

@fred, understandably.
Avatar Sun. 5/7/17 9:56am Dave in Vermont:

benny hill. omg
Avatar Sun. 5/7/17 9:56am Jeff Golick:

I think it was your request yesterday that inspired this pick, @Doctorjazz! Jealous of your having seen these guys.
Avatar Sun. 5/7/17 9:56am Jeff Golick:

Yeah, that's a bold quote, eh, @Dave?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 5/7/17 9:58am melinda:

I saw the Kollektief in Vermont.
Avatar Sun. 5/7/17 9:59am Jeff Golick:

Oh nice, @melinda. I was a pretty late arrival to Brueker. Thought his first name was William for a (too) long while.
Avatar Sun. 5/7/17 10:00am Jeff Golick:

Oy: Breuker.
Avatar Sun. 5/7/17 10:02am fred:

@Jeff: speaking of yesterday's requests, was it my Marcus Belgrave request that had you surprised?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 5/7/17 10:02am doctorjazz:

they were adventurous musically and slapstick funny at the same time. Bennick would leave his drum set and play drums on anything he could hit with his sticks in the audience. My wife, who is not a fan of adventurous music (though I am breaking her down slowly....may get her to go see Zorn with me at the Village Vanguard) enjoyed their performance.
Avatar Sun. 5/7/17 10:03am Jeff Golick:

Possibly, @fred? I can't quite remember back that far...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 5/7/17 10:04am doctorjazz:

There's some Blake Tribute concert coming up I noticed in the NY area.
Avatar Sun. 5/7/17 10:04am Jeff Golick:

(I'm generally only surprised at how awesome FMU listeners are.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 5/7/17 10:04am doctorjazz:

Blake, I meant to say.
  Sun. 5/7/17 10:06am Doug Schulkind:

Thank you for restoring my faith in Mankunku, Jeff!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 5/7/17 10:07am coelacanth∅:

Greetings Jeff and OUTlaws
Avatar Sun. 5/7/17 10:08am Jeff Golick:

My pleazh, @Doug. (I think you are the only other person to have played this record on the station, in the Kenzo era, anyway...)
Avatar Sun. 5/7/17 10:08am Jeff Golick:

Heya, @coelacanth∅! How goes?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 5/7/17 10:09am melinda:

I hadn't heard of Willem Breuker before seeing the group. They were one of several musical acts on the calendar for the local arts program, so we went.

Avatar Sun. 5/7/17 10:16am Jeff Golick:

Hodges + Marion Brown, what's not to love?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 5/7/17 10:16am doctorjazz:

Getting a new puppy in about a month (hope Ozzie takes it OK...) . How the puppy thing going, @Jeff?
Avatar Sun. 5/7/17 10:18am Jeff Golick:

It's going ok, thanks for asking, @doctorjazz. We still have some behavioral kinks to work out, at home and outside. But he mostly goes to the bathroom outside, so that's a plus.

Mostly it's pointed out how little tolerance I have for change. I knew this going in, but apparently it's a lesson I need to learn over and over and over and over again...
  Sun. 5/7/17 10:20am Dean:

"little tolerance ... for change," says the DJ playing a Sun Ra Arkestra blowing session.
Avatar Sun. 5/7/17 10:21am fred:

@Jeff: yet you're a DJ on WFMU's most out there stream
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 5/7/17 10:21am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

It's after the End of the World! Don'tchoo know that yet?!?!!
Avatar Sun. 5/7/17 10:21am Jeff Golick:

But it's modal, @Dean!
Avatar Sun. 5/7/17 10:21am Dave in Vermont:

@Jeff 10:18, are we still talking about POTUS?

LesPaul: 'Miles asked me how I got so many Hits. They got melodies Miles!'
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 5/7/17 10:33am doctorjazz:

You probably have your puppy raising books already, but we like The Monks of New Skeet, The Art Of Raising A Puppy, used it with Ozzie, rereading it for the new puppy. (it's not Forces In Motion, but it does the job)
Avatar Sun. 5/7/17 10:36am Jeff Golick:

Oh yeah I remember that book, from when I was a teen and my family got a dog.

We've consulted, and been sent, a number of others. And had a trainer come by. In the non-Cesar, positive reinforcement world, it all seems entirely based on shoving treats at 'em. I'm not opposed, but it feels a little one-note.
Avatar Sun. 5/7/17 10:47am fred:

That's some prime Miles cut, gets me remembering a great dance show set to this track
Avatar Sun. 5/7/17 10:50am Jeff Golick:

The sound of Miles, Wayne, & Co. selling out to the kids.

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 5/7/17 11:10am doctorjazz:

I had the same experience with Miles, took ESP out of the library, listened to it, didn't get it, didn't listen to jazz again for a few years, found my way in through a Jazz History Class and the Smithsonial 6LP history of jazz box.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 5/7/17 11:13am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Still late grade school maybe - took Curtis Mayfield, Eno, the Staples out of the Library. Nothing (amazing @ that seems to me now). Back to my Who & Beatle records. Took Coltrane out. BOOM!
Avatar Sun. 5/7/17 11:17am Jeff Golick:

Context is everything. Timing, too, is everything.
  Sun. 5/7/17 11:18am Dean:

Two records introduced me to jazz: Bill Evans' eponymous Columbia record, in particular "Peace Piece," and Jack Wilkins' "Red Clay." I suspect there is something to the fact that both of these guys are white, but I'm not sure what that something is.
  Sun. 5/7/17 11:20am Dean:

OTOH, well before then my mom used to play Billie Holiday records, which I enjoyed.
Avatar Sun. 5/7/17 11:20am Jeff Golick:

I would guess that "Kind of Blue" has been the gateway for many, many listeners. (The gate may well shut right after that purchase, but still.)
Avatar Sun. 5/7/17 11:20am fred:

Anthony Braxton covered a wide and wild range. I'm grateful you're paying tribute before it's an obit
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 5/7/17 11:21am doctorjazz:

Been fun, going to go bike the Watchung Reservation, take the phone/show with me (there's a possible name for the segment, "Braxton for Bikers".
Thanks for the great sounds, catch you next week.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 5/7/17 11:21am coelacanth∅:

the main things i didn't get when i first heard them were Phil Ochs (granted i was about 9 when my father gave me the record), and free jazz in general.
i never really tried to like free jazz.
then became friendly with David S Ware and tried...still didn't get it.

then one day i just wanted to hear it; put on "third ear recitation" and fell in Love immediately.
Avatar Sun. 5/7/17 11:21am Jeff Golick:

I did not have a great parent collection to raid. Dorseys, Sinatra, Ella (which was great, actually).
Avatar Sun. 5/7/17 11:22am Jeff Golick:

Bye, @doctorjazz! Have a good and safe ride.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 5/7/17 11:22am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...I think I always liked Jazz tho': I had been informed by an older sibling very into Music that it was all Family in African-American Form terms - & Hendrix & Psych generally really prepares one for anything - or should...
  Sun. 5/7/17 11:22am Dean:

For sure, "Kind of Blue," although to this day I much prefer "Somethin' Else."
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 5/7/17 11:22am coelacanth∅:

kind of blue bored me for many years.
bitches brew was my gateway to Miles.

Yeah, that "Autumn Leaves" is a killer.
Avatar Sun. 5/7/17 11:23am Jeff Golick:

@fred: thanks for that comment.

on third ear recitation Jeff? that's the one that drew me closer.
Avatar Sun. 5/7/17 11:25am Jeff Golick:

(No, sorry, @coel; mine was a response to @Dean & "Somethin' Else.")

(But yes: third ear recitation!!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 5/7/17 11:27am coelacanth∅:

odd,- i'm not sure i've heard the whole somethin else album.
Avatar Sun. 5/7/17 11:28am Dave in Vermont:

It was the release "Miles & Coltrane." I realize now that this is the Miles Davis Quintet. But I think the title of the release made me buy it on cassette. I listened to it a lot but I remember driving past the Ledgewood Mall and having an ah hah moment.
Avatar Sun. 5/7/17 11:30am Jeff Golick:

Re David S. Ware, this little interview with AUM Fidelity's Stephen Joerg is good reading: brooklynrail.org...

...really channeling Trane, by my (albeit not brilliant) estimation.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 5/7/17 11:54am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I seem to remember the grey cover of 'Best of Coltrane' & playing 'Favorite Things' until my family protested...& the Library had a bunch of the Impulse! I felt very intellectual & grown up about it - w/ some justification I think! But it was Trane & pure satisfaction too - wow - a whole world that's not Rawk that I can also love... & the big Smithsonian set for me too - from early Roots music to Ornette & Cecil - rich & wonderful...& that still satisfies - that feeling of immersing in a deep enriching Tradition that is also entertaining & fun...
  Sun. 5/7/17 11:55am Dean:

Criminy, Iggy Pop gets around. B-52s, New Order, Steve Swallow... He should have made an appearance with the Three Tenors.
