I sometimes think at Christmas when family members draw a name to give a gift, while the hit-or-miss -- sometimes nice and generous hits -- are fine, I should request one or two Ethiopiques discs and that would be perfect.

Once once spent $50 for an original pressing of Philip Glass's "Music With Changing Parts". It was at a now defunct record store on Ave A around 2004.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:09pm
Meghan:

I think we were just having a conversation here at the station about that exact record store!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:09pm
doctorjazz:

New Vinyl is quite expensive indeed...and collectible used vinyl is ridiculous (I was looking at the $400 John Coltrane "A Love Supreme", didn't sell by the end of my Friday visit, wonder if it went by Sunday).
I bought a few old Jim Kweskin Jug Band LPs, Dan Hicks and the hot LICKS, and volume 1 and 2 of the Sun Ra singles on vinyl, among other stuff.
  1:11pm
Alex In Illinois:

I think it was $58 for a CD copy of The Red And The Black by Jerry Harrison. It was on eBay.

I once paid something like$20 for the soundtrack to Hatari on vinyl, only to find it a week later on CD for $8. That was back in the late 1980's before ebay.
Avatar 1:12pm
KP:

"Coat of Many Colors" by Dolly Parton, Dynaflex vinyl, sealed, from Amanda.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:13pm
Meghan:

Ohhhhh, great Coltrane album, but $400 good? Lee Moses "Time and Place" album was recently reissued (thank god!) but I see the original up for 350 Euro
Avatar 1:17pm
KP:

Also picked up that hand painted plywood Sgt. Pepper set. Only $5. Looks nice but won't play on my turntable.
Avatar 1:19pm
KP:

I like the big CD sets that come out. They look so impressive you dont have to play them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:19pm
Meghan:

hahahaha! I was looking for the guy that always sells the painting on plywood at the fair and he wasn't there either..... sad!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:21pm
doctorjazz:

Just did one of those Google dollar conversion things, asked how much is $5 from 1970 worth today (what is inflation's effect on the price). The answer I got? $32.02, which makes the $35-40 price of vinyl not seem so bad...
(the trouble with big CD box sets-I DO just look at them and not play them).
Avatar 1:21pm

I can't remember the name of that record store, I even remember the names of the people that worked there.

And the Drummer Stream has ANOTHER new show debuting (the word debuting is always so weird in print) on Wednesday, May 17.

It will air every Wednesday, 10pm-midnight, following Gary Sullivan and Bodega Pop Live:

TESTIFY! with Larry Grogan
A roadmap that reveals the highways, byways, ley lines and subterranean tunnels connecting rock, soul, pop, folk rock, R&B, garage, punk, funk, jazz, world music, and soundtracks from the twilight of the 1950s to the dawn of the 1970s. Larry Grogan is a DJ, writer, podcaster, collector, and the man behind Funky16Corners.
