Avatar Fri. 4/21/17 9:12am Doug Schulkind:

Info on this Harry Kandel track:

These fourteen acoustic recordings of klezmer music were recorded between 1917 and 1921. Kandel was a Ukranian clarinetist who settled in Philadelphia and, as bandleader, recorded over 90 performances. His core group was comprised of clarinet, cornet, trombone, piano, drums, and xylophone. The energy and joy of classic klezmer music -- equal parts Eastern exotica and primitive jazz -- weaves and bobs through these performances, simultaneously festive and martial (Kandel's stint with John Phillip Sousa left a mark on his arrangements). Such titles as "Lebedik Un Freylekh (Lively and Happy)" and "Khosn Kale Mazel Tov (Congratulations, Bride and Groom)" suggest the mood here.

Here is Peter Doolan's description of Honey Sri'Isan:

A classic cassette from one of my personal favorite molam pop stars. Honey Sri'isan, from Kalasin, was a big name in her home region before becoming known nationwide as a model (she was the first and only molam to appear as a cover girl for Malai Thai Rath). This 1991 cassette contains the second of two albums she recorded for the Bangkok-based Thai-Muslim imprint Yanavy Sound. With compositions by the legendary Dao Bandon and music by A. Num Phuthai and his band, pop molam doesn't get much better than this. Sadly, Honey died just a year after this album when her pickup overturned on the way back from a concert in Sisaket. The location on the highway is still marked with a shrine where regular performances are held in her memory

Avatar Fri. 4/21/17 9:47am Doug Schulkind:

I'm betting this Lao track is courtesy of Gary Sullivan's Bodega Pop blog. Gary just did a stupendous Lao New Year special: wfmu.org...
  Fri. 4/21/17 9:51am Listener Gregory:

When Unidentified Lao woman was finally identified, her former fans accused her of selling out.

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 4/21/17 9:54am Identified Lao woman:

Avatar Fri. 4/21/17 9:54am Doug Schulkind:

Maybe Unidentified Lao Woman is Elena Ferrante?
Avatar Fri. 4/21/17 9:55am Doug Schulkind:

Gary, it appears you played a "Track 2" by an unidentified Lao woman on your New Year's special. Was it this track?!?
Avatar Fri. 4/21/17 9:56am Jeff Golick:

Doug, you have a two-track mind.
Avatar Fri. 4/21/17 9:56am Doug Schulkind:

Hi, melinda! The instrument accompanying the singer is a khaen. See the guy on the left: hajimaji.files.wordpress.com...

Avatar Fri. 4/21/17 9:57am Gary:

No, this one is different -- I know which CD this came from ... I found it in Seattle at a Lao store out close to the airport
Avatar Fri. 4/21/17 9:57am Doug Schulkind:

Too bad I don't have a NordicTrak mind. I'd be in much better shape, Jeff Golick.
Avatar Fri. 4/21/17 9:58am βrian:

In our local Lao restaurants, they play only the worst poppy pop.

I KNEW this Lao music was courtesy of you, Gary. I laove you.

@Parq
I don't click unknown links during the show in case it leads me to involuntary sound that will go out over the air.

Happy fuckin morning to you, ɛɨk!
Avatar Fri. 4/21/17 11:13am βrian:

Ach, families. They get you every time! I hope all is well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 4/21/17 11:13am Parq:

Fair enough. FYI, it''s Chuckie Finster saying "Aw, I can't do anything right."
Avatar Fri. 4/21/17 11:13am Doug Schulkind:

For those hoping for more surface noise, I apologize.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 4/21/17 11:13am Parq:

And yes, it is audio, so you made the right choice. I will remember that in the future.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 4/21/17 11:14am Brian in UK:

Playing Sory Kandia Kouyate in the car on the way to the woods this AM. Spencer does not mind but wife is not enamoured. He was such a handsome chap too. Not very often I wish I could sing but I would make an exception to be like that angel.
Avatar Fri. 4/21/17 11:14am Doug Schulkind:

Parq, it's perfectly OK to give me the power over making my own screwups.
  Fri. 4/21/17 11:15am Listener Gregory:

I also heard Misha clinking at the very end.
Avatar Fri. 4/21/17 11:15am Jeff Golick:

@Doug @11:08: oh yeah. Misha banging on the same two notes over and over again toward the end. I was guessing one was a high C, given the tune name.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 4/21/17 11:15am annie:

i'm still listening.. just had some stuff to do... and, re: the gif: i think the slippers make the outfit with a nice touch of the droopy sock.
Avatar Fri. 4/21/17 11:16am Doug Schulkind:

This stunning Otim Alpha number is from Uganda.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 4/21/17 11:16am Brian in UK:

@annie OUTFIT?
Avatar Fri. 4/21/17 11:17am Doug Schulkind:

Thanks, Jeff Golick. I take everything I said earlier!
Avatar Fri. 4/21/17 11:18am Doug Schulkind:

@annie DROOPY!
  Fri. 4/21/17 11:18am Listener Gregory:

You know who does a great version of this song? Unidentifed Gulu man.
Avatar Fri. 4/21/17 11:18am still b/p:

Clciked the Otim star. And that'll my walk-on music at campaign events.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 4/21/17 11:19am Parq:

I would add only parenthetically that, given the particular text (and tone, take my word for it) of the clip, it would have been pretty fucking hilarious if you had accidentally aired it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 4/21/17 11:19am annie:

i just wanted the comment to have a loose interpretation according to your mindset... and, hey, he has a hat, too, yo.
Avatar Fri. 4/21/17 11:21am Doug Schulkind:

You've got my vote, still b/p.
Avatar Fri. 4/21/17 11:21am Jeff Golick:

"Chikoni 808" is a very promising song title.

I'm with you, ɛɨk. Complete anarchy is just plain stupid. It is an absurd bourgeois notion. There I said it.

I'm hoping a few of you will join me at the tip of the hour. Maybe you can draw straws.

Advocating anarchy is one of those things, like being "bored with politics", that necessarily denote privilege.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 4/21/17 11:36am Stanley:

"Your Love Has Got Me Chained and Bound"....mmmm, Alfreda.
  Fri. 4/21/17 11:36am JtotheK:

Never listened to this side of Alfreda 45! The flip chained/bound is good, too.

@JtotheK
Yes me too. Only heard the flip before just now.
  Fri. 4/21/17 11:39am Listener Gregory:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 4/21/17 11:46am Parq:

I've got the reflexive red flag awareness that says, "Should I go down at all to one or both knees?...okay, ginnnnnngerly." They mostly work fine, but they do be talkin' later if they been knelt upon.
