Mini review/plug-The Microscopic Septet new album, Been Up So Long It Seems Like Down To Me; The Micros Play The Blues is a blast. I heard them play it live and have the CD, think it is great! Great take on the blues, rich sounds and interesting/involving arrangements from one of my favorite bands.

Avatar 10:44am Little Danny:

God I love the sound of the bass clarinet in jazz so much
Avatar 10:45am Little Danny:

Great Curson track!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45am Doug Schulkind:

Maybe the greatest ever bass clarinetists Eric Dolphy is on this Ted Curson number... on flute.
Avatar 🥁 10:48am βrian:

Can it compare to the bass bassoon, though?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:51am Jeff Golick:

I too love a bass clarinet. Just wanted to get that out there.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:51am Brian in UK:

@βrian Not used so far this year, giving up the allotment. Poor clay soil and a ton of stones.
Avatar 10:52am Little Danny:

Dolphy was truly its most visible champion. Was he the first to record bass clarinet in modern jazz? Methinks yes.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:53am Brian in UK:

@Stanley, well, west side of the Peak District, maybe. T'wards Manchesterish.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53am Doug Schulkind:

@Little Danny
According to Jazz Times: jazztimes.com...
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:54am doctorjazz:

David Murray gets great sounds out of the bass clarinet, methinks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55am Doug Schulkind:

If I were to start a publication, the last thing I would ever call it would be Jazz Times. OK, maybe I wouldn't call it Puppy & Kitten Squishing Quarterly, but Jazz Times is a close second.
Avatar 10:55am Little Danny:

Boom. Thanks Doug! You truly are doing all the work this morning
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57am Stanley:

Brian - nice countryside, handy for Manchester, that sounds good.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:57am Brian in UK:

Doug, the fishing mag 'Total Carp' has it hands down for me. Never knew fishermen had a sense of humour.
Avatar 🥁 10:58am βrian:

We have only our front yard in which to grow a garden. Heavy clay soil, but well supplemented with composted horse poo.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58am Doug Schulkind:

Duly noted, Jeff Golick. Wouldn't want to leave you off the bass clarinet gravy train.

That's my new publication title: BASS CLARINET GRAVY TRAIN
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:59am Brian in UK:

Not too fresh is the trick.
Avatar 🥁 11:00am Parq:

Luv Dolphy's bass clarinet stuff.
Avatar 🥁 11:00am βrian:

I used to live near a bait, tackle, and barber shop.
Avatar 🥁 11:01am βrian:

There's a special valve on a tuba to release the Tuba Gravy.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:01am Brian in UK:

I had a close shave with a mullet once.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02am Doug Schulkind:

I'd like to open a fishing supply store and call it Bait & Switch.
  11:03am Dean:

I *played* bass clarinet (and clarinet and tenor sax) for half a year in junior high school during eighth grade, because the former player had moved on to high school. I was slightly taller than the instrument.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:08am Jeff Golick:

@docjazz: you know this Murray record: www.discogs.com... ? I would like to, but do not.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:11am doctorjazz:

My younger daughter played one in elementary school, was also a height issue, didn't last too long...

@Jeff G-don't have/know that one, looks interesting. If I remember correctly, there was a period that David Murray was releasing albums on DIW at what seemed like a weekly schedule, was impossible to keep up.
  11:14am Dean:

Yep, he was releasing DIW records from the late '80s.
  11:16am Marie:

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:20am doctorjazz:

@Dean, you have the aformentioned Ballads for Bass Clarinets? (as a general rule, I avoid most albums called "ballads"-a whole album of them is usually enough to put me to sleep)
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:21am doctorjazz:

(getting put to sleep doesn't seem such a bad thing anymore, though)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23am Doug Schulkind:

I have that David Murray LP. If you want MP3s, email me.
  11:24am Dean:

What's happy? The day or the international beaver?

@doctorjazz: I don't have that ballads record, alas, and I am fond of records that lull and calm me. Hank Jones & Charlie Haden's Steal Away comes to mind.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:25am Jeff Golick:

I too am pro-ballads.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:25am Jeff Golick:

@Dean, Steal Away is a great record! Definitely not a universal policy, the Ballad album thing!

@Doug, I'd be interested (maybe set up a trade, though you probably don't need much I have). Do you convert the LP? (I did that with one David Murray LP I sent to Jeff G).
