This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

Avatar Thu. 4/6/17 7:08pm Flash Strap:

H'lo y'self Scraps!

@Doc: it sucked, honestly. I didn't intend to take the week off, I just have been having no internet at my house, off and on. Still a problem - I'm broadcasting from a friend's house.

Actually, the rest of the week was fine, no internet is pain but means more book-time
Avatar Thu. 4/6/17 7:11pm Flash Strap:

I love this crazy music
Avatar    Thu. 4/6/17 7:13pm hyde:

sorry i'm late. i was somehow engrossed in live chess.
Avatar Thu. 4/6/17 7:13pm Flash Strap:

Hiya Hyde! Live chess is engrossing, I'd imagine
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 4/6/17 7:14pm Scraps:

no internet is a pain. every time i suffer through no-internet, i can't believe i used to put up with this. those millenials, they don't know what we used to put up with. grump, pound cane on floor.
Avatar    Thu. 4/6/17 7:15pm hyde:

i'm just a dabbler, but they are showing the US championships from St Loo on Youtube, and I have somehow fallen into watching it all week

Avatar    Thu. 4/6/17 7:19pm hyde:

haha, no internet and/orcomputer is a pain. my computer is flaky lately and when it kept crashing yesterday during Gary's show i had to shut it down. then i couldn't get the fmu app to work. so i busted out my klh radio and read while i was eating dinner. haven't heard Derek and the Dominoes for a loooooong time.
Avatar Thu. 4/6/17 7:20pm Flash Strap:

This track is THE JAM
Avatar Thu. 4/6/17 7:23pm Flash Strap:

damn, Derek & the Dominoes
Avatar    Thu. 4/6/17 7:24pm hyde:

heh, exactly
Avatar Thu. 4/6/17 7:25pm Flash Strap:

that would take me too far back
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 4/6/17 7:29pm doctorjazz:

Amazing how I used to live just fine without a computer, was fairly late to the internet party. Home PC getting flaky now; sound all gone, from the internet, from the internal music players. I think my antivirus went wild and ate something it shouldn't have (it was telling me my music player was behaving suspiciously). So far, haven't been able to fix it, may need to reinstall Windows (yuk!). have lots of music on drives too, have to go back to the vinyls.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 4/6/17 7:31pm Little Danny:

I'd always considered Roger Wagner's choral stuff strictly no-fly, but that track you played is making me rethink. So dreamy, so druggy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 4/6/17 7:31pm Scraps:

Maya Deren is a featured character in my fave poet's Very Very Long Poem, James Merrill's bizarre epic narrative The Changing Light at Sandover. That's the first time I heard of her
  Thu. 4/6/17 7:32pm Ehd:

Hee - Lo. Don't want to be too correctionist.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 4/6/17 7:33pm Little Danny:

Totally agree about the disappointment of Colon's two LPs. Great artwork, stiff arrangements
Avatar Thu. 4/6/17 7:36pm Flash Strap:

@Ehd: while the place is definitely pronounced Hee-Lo, the song is always sung as High-Lo. Since I was describing the song and not the place, I say High-Lo. These are my rules, I live by them, except when I don't
Avatar Thu. 4/6/17 7:38pm Flash Strap:

@LD: Yeah, Roger Wagner is so lame most of the time, but sometimes those big chorales do get to that weird ghostly sound – probably recorded in an old chapel, though I don't know that for sure.
Avatar Thu. 4/6/17 7:40pm Flash Strap:

@Scraps: I've never read that, seems like I should. And if you've never seen her film Meshes in the Afternoon, you should!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 4/6/17 7:42pm Little Danny:

Flash, have you heard Musica Esporadica? It's my favorite of the "Fourth World" discography, at least of the albums I've heard.

Also, I love Futuro Antico
Avatar Thu. 4/6/17 7:43pm Flash Strap:

I don't think I have!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 4/6/17 7:45pm Little Danny:

Ahhhh, another fave, this Sinigaglia
Avatar Thu. 4/6/17 7:47pm Flash Strap:

so good! I only recently got into this stuff... I'd had most of it but hadn't gotten to know it really. Still filling in some of the gaps
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 4/6/17 7:49pm doctorjazz:

Nice, interesting stuff on tonight, Flash!
Usually a good learning experience, decent jazz and pop/rock knowledge, but this stuff is all new, and fun listening.

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 4/6/17 7:51pm doctorjazz:

Avatar Thu. 4/6/17 7:51pm Flash Strap:

So glad to be able to play the learned doctor something new!

That looked oddly sarcastic to me when I typed it out, but I mean it sincerely
Avatar Thu. 4/6/17 7:51pm Flash Strap:

I like this too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 4/6/17 7:51pm doctorjazz:

Yeah, sure (just kidding...)
Avatar    Thu. 4/6/17 7:54pm hyde:

that Sinigaglia was driving me crazy because the name reminded me of an Italian minimalist piano guy whose record i liked. took me quite a while to find that guy's name was Roberto Cacciapaglia (which isn't really all that much like Sinigaglia)
Avatar Thu. 4/6/17 7:57pm Flash Strap:

I love, love, love Cacciapaglia, Hyde! At one point, I was going to play his Sei Note In Logica tonight, but I had to be honest with myself that it didn't work with really any of the night's themes. So good though man, so good!
Avatar    Thu. 4/6/17 8:00pm hyde:

all i have is that Sonanze and other works 1972 - 1975 comp that i think i got from Root Strata, but it's really good.
Avatar Thu. 4/6/17 8:02pm Flash Strap:

That's really good too. Check out Sei Note In Logica, I think you'd love it. Breathtaking. I think you can still find it out there, too
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 4/6/17 8:03pm doctorjazz:

Thanks, Flash, time for me to leave the office, great stuff! I"ll take you to the car (but won't post while driving).
Avatar Thu. 4/6/17 8:04pm Flash Strap:

god this track is crazy good

Avatar Thu. 4/6/17 8:18pm Flash Strap:

Hi NGH! It's a trip, this one
Avatar Thu. 4/6/17 8:35pm Flash Strap:

These are just the strangest sounds
Avatar Thu. 4/6/17 8:43pm Flash Strap:

This record is so amazing, played on an instrument of his devising: "About fifty homemade instruments designed to be as small as possible and placed on racks so as to be played from one spot(in a rotating, standing position) - styles of many countries were adapted - such as irish harp, koto, Drums, Thumb Piano, Flutes, Sitar and Dulcimer - there are 311 strings total - the key bass was adapted to be played by foot along with several other homemade foot instruments - the ability to make electric pick-ups from coils and computer parts was taught to me by Jon Lazell - Jon also allowed me to adapt some of his inventions & motivated me to invent some of my own - the result - "the Universal One Man Orchestra", primitive, contemporary and futuristic."
Avatar Thu. 4/6/17 8:44pm Flash Strap:

a huge rig. you can see it here: img.discogs.com...
Avatar Thu. 4/6/17 8:47pm Flash Strap:

All compliments to Little Danny, as far as I can tell the discoverer of this amazing 45
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 4/6/17 8:49pm coelacanth∅:

that's awesome.
...kind of like anarchestra, but more compact.
Avatar Thu. 4/6/17 8:50pm still b/p:

With a description like that, and I only caught the last 30 seconds of Bobby Brown?! I'm being punished for something! Oh, wait, the current music is nice and rewardy.
Avatar Thu. 4/6/17 8:51pm Flash Strap:

Still b/p! Hello!
Avatar Thu. 4/6/17 8:53pm Flash Strap:

@C: also reminds me of Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann's THE BEAST
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 4/6/17 8:53pm coelacanth∅:

(and Alex Ferris (sp?) makes a lot of wind instruments too.)
Avatar    Thu. 4/6/17 8:54pm hyde:

Godley and Creme. 80's music video geniuses.
Avatar Thu. 4/6/17 8:54pm Flash Strap:

I never got into 10cc, or much of Godley and Creme, but certain tracks on this record are so amazing and strange. An inventive new instrument on this too: The GIZMOTRON
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 4/6/17 8:54pm coelacanth∅:

you know - i have never listened to "the beast". i must.
Avatar Thu. 4/6/17 8:55pm Flash Strap:

Gizmo: an electric guitar effect device that Godley and Creme had invented a few years earlier as a means of providing orchestral textures, because the band at that stage could not afford to hire orchestral players to augment their recordings. The Gizmo was an electro-mechanical device which was clamped over the bridge of an electric guitar; it contained six small motor-driven toothed plastic wheels that, when pushed into contact with the strings, created a 'bowing' effect, producing notes and chords with endless sustain that, with additional audio effects treatment and overdubbing, could emulate violins, violas, cellos and basses.
Avatar    Thu. 4/6/17 8:55pm hyde:

they did the video for Herbie Hancock's Rockit, which alone solidifies their importance for me
Avatar Thu. 4/6/17 8:56pm Flash Strap:

the beast was used to great effect on the Apocalypse Now sessions, highly recommended
Avatar Thu. 4/6/17 8:56pm Flash Strap:

holy shit, they did! I forgot that!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 4/6/17 8:56pm coelacanth∅:

oh damn - i want a gizmo!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 4/6/17 8:57pm Uncle Michael:

I saw the Beast in the flesh numerous times.
Avatar Thu. 4/6/17 8:57pm Flash Strap:

some more on the production of this album: At one point, to create the impression that the listener is inside a coffin during a burial, a binaural "head" microphone unit was placed behind a board at the foot of a flight of stairs, while Godley shovelled sand on to it. Three days were spent producing a saxophone sound from an electric guitar; each note of a guitar solo was recorded separately and faded in on the track, which was then sent through a speaker and out of a rubber hose with perforated cigarette paper at the end. Enough pressure was displaced by forcing the sound through the holes of the cigarette paper to give the rasp of a saxophone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 4/6/17 8:57pm Uncle Michael:

Or at least the version of it that morphed into the touring piece...
Avatar Thu. 4/6/17 8:58pm Flash Strap:

I know you did, you venerable Dead Head! Hello Uncle!
Avatar Thu. 4/6/17 8:58pm still b/p:

Godley and Creme, in a less offical pairing, had a single in 1967, "Yellow Bellow Room Boom." I'll be looking for it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 4/6/17 8:59pm Uncle Michael:

Yello.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 4/6/17 8:59pm Scraps:
