Pakistani Singer Sanam Marvi's Stirring Sufi Songcraft (Hour 2) +
Our April Fool's Format Change - World Music For Short Attention Spans (Hour 1)

Hear this show now: Pop-up listen Pop-up player! | Add or read comments

Pakistani singer Sanam Marvi is bringing new light to a beloved South Asian repertoire of mystical Sufi poetry and qawwali music, as well as folk songs and more. Pakistan’s Newsline calls her “one of the finest performers in the Sufi, ghazal and folk genres.”

She’s on tour now, and coming to New York for two events:

She’ll talk about the music and culture and her background and perform a bit too at the Asia Society, 725 Park Ave. in Manhattan on Wednesday April 5th at 6:30 pm.

And she’ll give a full concert at the BAM Howard Gilman Opera House, 30 Lafayette Avenue, Brooklyn, on Thursday April 6th at 7:30 pm.

But first, Sanam Marvi join us on the WFMU airwaves! She performs with her stellar ensemble along with special guest Arieb Azhar - another excellent artist from Pakistan who, like Sanam Marvi, has toured the US thanks to a special program called Center Stage (more on Center Stage below). He translates for Sanam and shares some of his own insight as well.

Massive thanks to Center Stage, a cultural exchange program initiated by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and produced by the New England Foundation for the Arts (NEFA). Sanam Marvi is one of several artists from Algeria, Pakistan and Tanzania selected and fully funded by the Center Stage program to tour the US and share their music and culture over the past year.

And more massive thanks Alexis Ortiz, Deirdre Valente and Lisa Booth management and to our illustrious engineers Mark Koch and Manny Yupa. Photo of Sanam Marvi above is by Jinsaar Kandhro; photo below by Kohi Marri.
