Hiss me, you fool.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 3/21/17 12:01pm Carmichael:

Heya Tony! looking forward to more Rascal Reporter-type music.
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 12:02pm Tony Coulter:

mmmmmmmmm .... Michael!!
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 12:02pm Tony Coulter:

Hiya, fleep & Carmichael!!!
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 12:06pm V Priceless:

hey Tony and peoples!
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 12:07pm Yvang:

Hi! ready to be puzzled...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 3/21/17 12:10pm JtotheK:

Hi Tony, hi everyone!
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 12:10pm Tony Coulter:

Hey, hey, hey, VP, Yvang & JtotheK!!!
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 12:15pm fleep:

My first cassette player had a stick shift, we used to goof around with it just like this (with less talent, of course) s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com...
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 12:16pm Tony Coulter:

Yes, I had something like that too!
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 12:20pm Guido from Cologne:

Hi Tony!
Cool those TEAC-cassettes with miniature reels.
Seen them but never had one.
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 12:22pm Tony Coulter:

Hiya, Guido!
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 12:23pm Tony Coulter:

So, just to clarify something I said in my intro: while the Rascal Reporters were around in the '70s, they were teenagers. Their first release (a cassette) wasn't until 1980.
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 12:26pm Tony Coulter:

I believe the tape on now is pre-Rascal Reporters, though....
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 12:42pm Webhamster Henry:

@Fleep - I had a stick-shift portable Craig 212 with 3" reels... one of those blew up nearly every week on Mission Impossible! That stick needed constant tightening!
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 12:45pm Tony Coulter:

Greets, Webham!!
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 12:53pm Tony Coulter:

As you heard, this side of the tape is a comp of earlier tapes -- I believe some go back to when Gore was 13 or so.
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 1:11pm Cecile:

Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 1:11pm Tony Coulter:

Hola hey hello, Cecile!!
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 1:12pm Cecile:

I'm so thrilled the station made its goal before Hoof and Mouth even started!
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 1:13pm Tony Coulter:

Yes! Unprecedented, I think....
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 1:14pm Tony Coulter:

Raw Meat (just mentioned) was Gore's first, teenage band
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 1:14pm Tony Coulter:

just mentioned and on now, I mean....
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 1:15pm V Priceless:

yeah, I think last year's goal didn't happen until the Tuesday or so after the 'thon, or thereabouts...
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 1:17pm Cecile:

that means late pledges will be bonus!
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 1:18pm Cecile:

what a wonderful legacy.
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 1:20pm Cecile:

they were a little older than I was!
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 1:23pm Tony Coulter:

Yeah, I definitely feel honored to be the custodian of all these tapes. There are still quite a few I haven't heard, as there are around 100 of 'em.
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 1:24pm Tony Coulter:

At some point, I may try to release the best of the best (if I can get permission to do that, that is).
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 1:25pm Tony Coulter:

I feel like I should recognize the song on now -- but I don't. Is it Bread?
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 1:25pm Cecile:

this is Bread right now
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 1:25pm Cecile:

this is a creepy Bread song.
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 1:25pm Tony Coulter:

Thanks for confirming, Cecile!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 3/21/17 1:26pm Carmichael:

Yes, a David Gates uber love song ...
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 1:27pm Tony Coulter:

This is obviously Morricone....
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 1:29pm Tony Coulter:

... tho I forget which track. I'm not good at remembering titles.
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 1:30pm northguineahills:

Too bad I took off my Shazam off my phone. (It never ID'ed anything I didn't already know, but I'm pretty sure it would have had Morricone).
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 1:30pm Webhamster Henry:

I'd say! It's so Morricon-y!
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 1:31pm Tony Coulter:

This on now is Skeleton Crew (or possibly Fred Frith solo).
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 1:31pm Cecile:

Skeleton Crew. Cello on it.
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 1:32pm Tony Coulter:

I don't have Shazam, because I am the last living human being without a cellphone (and proud of it too).
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 1:32pm Cecile:

Also, I have this album. So great.
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 1:32pm Cecile:

Shazam never helped me find anything, so I took it off my ipod.
  Tue. 3/21/17 1:32pm Dean:

Frith played a local watering hole in my neighborhood just a couple weeks ago. I was all poised to go when I had to make an emergency trip to Southern California.

Cellphones are, plain and simple, shit.
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 1:33pm Cecile:

I have a crummy grandma burner phone from Consumer Cellular. Everything else is my iPad. If there's no Wi-Fi, that's fine with me.
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 1:33pm Tony Coulter:

I hate 'em. Had one for a while, if truth be told, but happily abandoned it.
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 1:34pm Cecile:

They are good for me, a non-driving woman, so my husband can pick me up, or at least not be worried when I'm out.
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 1:36pm Cecile:

The Skeleton Crew album I believe is called Learn to Talk.
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 1:37pm Tony Coulter:

Think you're right. I have it, and recognized this track immediately -- I was just too lazy too confirm that's where it was from.
  Tue. 3/21/17 1:38pm Dean:

I am a devoted Luddite, and I don't see how anybody sane can't be otherwise. (The irony of being a regular listener from California to a program streamed across the 'net out of Portland, OR, via a station in New Jersey does not escape me.) To be clear: as a Luddite I am merely highly skeptical of the hyped promise of these devices and protocols. I am not anti-technology. Learning to program in 1976 was fascinating, as was running a network during the '90s.
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 1:38pm Tony Coulter:

This on now is the Rascal Reporters.
  Tue. 3/21/17 1:39pm Dean:

Er, *could be otherwise.
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 1:39pm Cecile:

Dean, I'm similar. Whatever happened to "appropriate technology"? Half the time a list on the back of an envelope is as good as any electronic planner.
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 1:40pm Webhamster Henry:

It's a pity that Twitter can't be used for training puppies.
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 1:41pm Webhamster Henry:

Ooh, back announcing!
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 1:41pm Tony Coulter:

Partial back announcing.....
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 1:42pm Tony Coulter:

This is the Rascal Reporters again.....
  Tue. 3/21/17 1:42pm Dean:

Heh, just now in my email inbox, a series of messages with the Subject, "Unscheduled Network Outage."

Exactly, Cecile. "Appropriate" entails a degree of objective value, not just subjective desire and satisfaction. Folks don't reflect on whether or not a tool is right for the job so much as whether or not "I like it!"
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 1:42pm Cecile:

Where did you say they were out of again?
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 1:43pm northguineahills:

My iPhone is 6 years old. I would still have at my Blackberry from 2004 if my wife hadn't given me her old iPhone and made me part from my old phone. I'll stay w/ this one until it dies (and, it's doing a great job of dying, already replaced the battery once, myself).
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 1:43pm Tony Coulter:

@ Cecile: Oak Park, Michigan.
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 1:43pm Tony Coulter:

... which is a suburb of Detroit.
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 1:44pm Cecile:

It would be funny if they came to Ann Arbor and me or one of my friends would have sold them records. Yeah, I'm familiar with Oak Park. Ann Arbor's only about 45 minutes away.
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 1:45pm northguineahills:

"list on the back on envelope". Not if your penmanship is illegible to your own self. My teachers made me type my homework since I was in the third grade, and that was 1984.
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 1:45pm Tony Coulter:

OK, this is obviously Tom Jones: Little Red Book.
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 1:46pm Cecile:

NGH, I am getting my 2012 15" screen laptop repaired. they don't make them anymore, and once it craps out, they won't fix it anymore. So it better last for a while.
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 1:47pm Tony Coulter:

I'm guessing this on now is also Morricone....
  Tue. 3/21/17 1:48pm Dean:

Funny, while Tom Jones sang the title tune in the soundtrack to "What's New Pussycat?," Manfred Mann sang "My Little Red Book."
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 1:50pm Tony Coulter:

Have no idea who this is now....
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 1:50pm Cecile:

Sounds like Dionne Warwick
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 1:51pm Tony Coulter:

That sounds right! Wuz just going to suggest that.
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 1:54pm Tony Coulter:

OK, I really have no idea what the track on now is.
  Tue. 3/21/17 1:55pm Dean:

Steve Lacy and Mal Waldron?
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 1:56pm Tony Coulter:

Doesn't sound like Lacy to me, but who knows. Almost sounds like Tony Coe??
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 1:57pm Tony Coulter:

This is the Rascal Reporters now
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 1:57pm Cecile:

I was gonna say Steve Lacy, or maybe someone on clairinet. Did Sidney Bechet ever make a boppy record?
  Tue. 3/21/17 1:58pm Dean:

Right, a little too showy for Lacy. I don't know where he played with piano/drums/bass/trumpet.
  Tue. 3/21/17 1:59pm JtotheK:

Gotta head out, but enjoyed the tapes - thanks Tony!
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 1:59pm Tony Coulter:

See ya, JtotheK!
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 2:01pm Tony Coulter:

Thanks to Doug (Drummer Doug, natch), I know exactly what this track is: Pharoah Sanders: "Heart Is a Melody of Time."
  Tue. 3/21/17 2:03pm Dean:

Checking Coe's discography for pre-'85 recordings. Nothing obvious there...
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 2:05pm Tony Coulter:

This Pharoah Sanders track kinda reminds me of Magma.
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 2:05pm still b/p:

I believe Tony Middleton was the singer in the My Little Red Book version. I didn't know that offhand. But I thought Tom Jones...? Didn't sound like him. Middleton sings it on a Burt Bacharach Plays His Hits album from '66 or '69 depending on which dating you believe. Found it and gave a quick listen.
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 2:07pm Tony Coulter:

Aha! Thanks, still b/p!! If I ever air this tape again, I'll know exactly what's on it.
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 2:08pm Tony Coulter:

Guess I could have figured it out first, but, no....
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 2:09pm Tony Coulter:

Here's the Rascal Reporters again....
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 2:12pm still b/p:

Oscar Wilde said, "Figuring it out first is the last refuge of the unimaginative DJ."
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 2:13pm Tony Coulter:

Don't know what this on now is either.....
  Tue. 3/21/17 2:15pm Dean:

This strings and guitar is DEFINITELY Steve Lacy.
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 2:15pm Cecile:

That last big band piece had a sound that reminded me a little of some of Henry Threadgill's units.
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 2:15pm Tony Coulter:

Also don't know what this is!
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 2:16pm Hams in Athens:

this is kind of interesting, not being able to report the playlist.
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 2:17pm Tony Coulter:

Hiya, Hams! Yes -- personally, I kinda like the semi-mystery....
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 2:17pm Cecile:

nothing has been steve lacy imo, Dean!
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 2:18pm Cecile:

that last piece might be from a film like two for the road or something.
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 2:18pm Tony Coulter:

This is the Rascal Reporters again
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 2:20pm northguineahills:

Ok, definitely Steve Lacy!
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 2:20pm Webhamster Henry:

I'm waiting to hear this mashed up with "I've Never Been To Me"
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 2:20pm Hams in Athens:

yeah, yeah. i imagine turning on the weather, and the weatherman just being at a lost what the forecast was. be pretty neat.
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 2:20pm Cecile:

this sounds like a cover.
  Tue. 3/21/17 2:22pm Dean:

...of a mid-period Chicago tune.
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 2:22pm Cecile:

or Steve lacy.
  Tue. 3/21/17 2:23pm Dean:

Yeah, Lacy was all about rhyming "Paris, France" with "romance."
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 2:23pm Cecile:

and "Shine" and "mine"
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 2:24pm V Priceless:

impressive composition
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 2:25pm geezerette:

he loves you
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 2:28pm Tony Coulter:

Hiya, geezerette!
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 2:28pm Cecile:

why were these guys not huge? At least Todd Rundgren huge?
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 2:28pm geezerette:

Hello Tony !
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 2:30pm northguineahills:

I got to use "Todd Rundgren huge" as a reference point from now on.
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 2:32pm Webhamster Henry:

Todd will be here in Kingston on May 13th, playing at UPAC, a great venue!
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 2:32pm Cecile:

I live to give.
  Tue. 3/21/17 2:34pm Dean:

Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 2:34pm V Priceless:

good point, @ Cecile Re: ToddHuge
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 2:35pm Cecile:

I saw Todd open for Hall and Oates once. He was hilarious and bizarre. Half of the audience loved it, the other half was yelling "Play your hit!"
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 2:36pm Cecile:

Then at the end, they did a Philly soul medley, and Daryl had to point Todd to the teleprompter right under his feet. Good times.
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 2:38pm Tony Coulter:

As for why Rascal Reporters never got big, or even semi-big: I think their sound was just too diverse. A combination of Egg, the Residents, and Bread was probably just too weird for most people.
  Tue. 3/21/17 2:38pm Dean:

I saw Todd during the Back to the Bars tour at the Roxy. Maybe H&O were there, too?
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 2:39pm Cecile:

They could have been. They have been pals for years.
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 2:48pm Webhamster Henry:

Definitely Dave Stewart-y!
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 2:49pm Cecile:

how did you discover the Rascal Reporters, Tony?
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 2:49pm Tony Coulter:

Forget now -- have been a fan for years.
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 2:51pm Tony Coulter:

Maybe I heard about them because Henry Cow and Univers Zero folks appear on one of their albums. I think that's what made me seek them out.
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 2:51pm Cecile:

About when was that?
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 2:52pm Tony Coulter:

This record: www.discogs.com...
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 2:52pm Tony Coulter:

So, mid-80s.
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 2:53pm V Priceless:

wow - I did not realize Nick Didkovsky plays guitar on this. He's been performing Alice Cooper's "Pretties For You" in its entirety of recent. In fact, he's doing it again in April, and I'm a going!
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 2:53pm Cecile:

Very cool! Every time I hear them, I like them more.
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 2:54pm V Priceless:

fun show, Tony - thanks!
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 2:55pm Tony Coulter:

Thanks for showing up, everyone!! See you next week....
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 3:08pm Webhamster Henry:

@V Priceless Whoa! Nick is an old friend - yes go see him play!
Avatar Tue. 3/21/17 3:48pm Jeff Golick:

Stopping by late just to say that I'm a-bummed to have missed this name-that-tune roller-coaster ride.
