Postwar atmospherica. High bop modernism and Afro-Latin sounds, twilight exotica and soundtrack moods, soul stompers and weepers, hypnotic R&B and blues, mystical '60s pop, lonely country, lonelier rock 'n' roll, instrumental weirdness, electronic creaking. Bringing worlds beyond into the worlds at hand.

Artwork by Evan Crankshaw!

For pledges of $75 or more: ¡Magia Negra! A dip into the cool blue lagoon of Latin exotica. The ‘50s and ‘60s were exotica’s moment, the Tiki jazz and Polynesian pops of Martin Denny and Les Baxter selling by the million and radiating postwar America’s misconceptions of non-Western cultures right back at itself. While they’re rarely discussed, Latin musicians took naturally to exotica. From ambitious voodoo suites by popular orquestas to wiggy jungle jazz 45s by local congueros, a discography of mambos, cu-bop, boleros and chas would be rendered in a swirl of bird calls, vibraphones, flutes, percussion and nightclub atmospherics. ¡Magia Negra! is but a sample.

Honored, humbled and hip-hop-hurrayed to be joined again by my cohost/coproducer Jeff Golick (of Sunday's destination:OUT, 9am-noon). Let's rock this, Jeff!

And let's rock this friends!

Go Dan!!
  Thu. 3/16/17 10:04pm MrFab:

Was quite a nail-biter there on Explorers Room. Most awesome how the explorers came thru for Flash Strap in the final moments. Who needs March Madness for at-the-buzzer excitement?
Avatar Thu. 3/16/17 10:05pm Flash Strap:

What a photo finish that was!

Take her away Danny, I'm tapped out!
Avatar Thu. 3/16/17 10:06pm Jeff Golick:

Hey, MrFab & Kris & Flash & Scraps!

Wait until you hear and see and learn about the swell prizes Little Danny has on offer! Your wallets will leap out of your pockets...
Avatar Thu. 3/16/17 10:08pm Jeff Golick:

Hey there, Dean!
  Thu. 3/16/17 10:08pm Dean:

Can we smell the prizes, too?
Avatar Thu. 3/16/17 10:09pm Jeff Golick:

Yes, but only if you pledge first.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 3/16/17 10:09pm Little Danny:

Hello and hello and hello my friends. And thanks! And thanks, and thanks!
Avatar Thu. 3/16/17 10:10pm Doug Schulkind:

Kris "literally the voice from Marathon" Holmes, in the HOUSE!
Avatar Thu. 3/16/17 10:12pm geezerette:

Here I am again, a gluten for punishment, outta dough, but pledged at the beginning of marathon. Just cannot stay away from the music.
Avatar Thu. 3/16/17 10:13pm Jeff Golick:

Maybe without the dough, the gluten won't be such a problem, @geezerette. Hi and welcome!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 3/16/17 10:13pm Scraps:

hi five, geezerette!

Geez, hello! I'm just glad you're here/hear!
  Thu. 3/16/17 10:13pm Dean:

So I'm now listening at home to Irwin's comp of Sun Ra's singles, which I'll shortly turn off and replace with CBFwLD. I'm enticed by the prospect of a scratch-and-sniff premium...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 3/16/17 10:14pm Little Danny:

@Geez, if you root around in your couch and pull out $0.37, we'll take it tho!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 3/16/17 10:15pm Little Danny:

@Dean, that comp is so sick
Avatar Thu. 3/16/17 10:15pm geezerette:

Thank you, gentlemen all !
Avatar Thu. 3/16/17 10:19pm Jeff Golick:

Y'all know the drill: $20+ gets you a good shot at taking home some music, and an absolute LOCK on taking home some good vibes.
Avatar Thu. 3/16/17 10:21pm Doug Schulkind:

In 1991, I applied for a job at WFMU. At the time, station manager Ken Freedman was the station's only employee, and he was hiring a person to sort of run the office, direct the volunteers and do all the fundraising fulfillment and stuff. So I got an interview and went out to the station to meet Ken. He gave me a bunch of hypothetical situations to see how I would handle them.

One of the situations was this: The station is planning to give away a pizza-scented air freshener as a premium in the next marathon. How will you make this happen? I forget what I said or did, but I got the job.

And WFMU in fact DID give away a pizza-scented air freshener during the next marathon.

And now you know THE REST of the story.

Avatar Thu. 3/16/17 10:31pm Jeff Golick:

PLEDGE ALERT! [GTDR Family edition]
Big ups to Drummer stream DJ, host of The Long Way Home, Kris & (Misa H.) for a lovely pledge! Thanks, Kris & Misa!

"And now you know . . . . . . THE REST of the story"

[insert pause]

[my mom listened to paul harvey religiously. i think that was my first open exposure to a Radio Personality, and probably was my start to thinking "i want to be a Radio people!"]
Avatar Thu. 3/16/17 10:32pm Jeff Golick:

@Dean: me, I'm ok with that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 3/16/17 10:32pm Little Danny:

@Dean: I can tell you that this 78 sounds like absinthe and cloves
Avatar Thu. 3/16/17 10:34pm Jeff Golick:

45s, 78s...lotta numbers coming atcha, but not enough numbers comin' at Little Danny - what say, listener-who-hasn't-pledged-yet?
  Thu. 3/16/17 10:35pm MrFab:

That was taken from a 78?! How does it sound so good?
  Thu. 3/16/17 10:37pm Dean:

Been reading reviews of recordings of Prokofiev's works. His works for me trigger synaesthesia, music that has a certain taste. The reviewers evidently agree, as they allude to vinegar and other acerbic flavors. I totally understand how a recording invokes absinthe and cloves.
Avatar Thu. 3/16/17 10:39pm Jeff Golick:

Avatar Thu. 3/16/17 10:40pm geezerette:

Scraps, I went through a Paul Harvey phase. He was so funny, I was fascinated by that speech pattern but never tracked the story.
Avatar Thu. 3/16/17 10:41pm Jeff Golick:

Immense thanks to listener Lolita F. of Astoria, Queens (NYC) for a premium CD+ sized pledge!!
Avatar Thu. 3/16/17 10:44pm Jeff Golick:

Avatar Thu. 3/16/17 10:45pm Jeff Golick:

FLA in the house! Outstanding contribution from - and big thanks to - listener David F. of Miami. Thanks a mil, David!
Avatar Thu. 3/16/17 10:46pm Kris Holmes:

Blackrock Yeah Yeah is such a jam
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 3/16/17 10:48pm Scraps:

geezerette, and harvey was so, so conservative.... and every time i have to shake my head and get my brain right again, because he was a master of soothing, agreeable -- my brain wanted to agree with him, except when i slowly examined him...
Avatar Thu. 3/16/17 10:50pm Jeff Golick:

This is pretty intense. What are you picking up, @Dean?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 3/16/17 10:51pm JtotheK:

good evening everyone.
Avatar Thu. 3/16/17 10:53pm Jeff Golick:

Good and getting great, @JtotheK. Welcome welcome.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 3/16/17 10:56pm JtotheK:

  Thu. 3/16/17 10:56pm MrFab:

was Misty Canyon a porn star?
Avatar Thu. 3/16/17 10:58pm Jeff Golick:

Gigantic thanks to listener Dominic W. of Austin, TX, for a premium-sized pledge, noting "Dan's the best!" - and who are we to argue!
  Thu. 3/16/17 10:59pm Dean:

I'm not listening, Jeff. I'm making dinners for kids and the better half, who will return in an hour or so from work. But I do experience synaesthesia now and then. I just wish I could find the musical work that evokes the sublime pastrami sandwich from Johnny's on Sepulveda in LA.
Avatar Thu. 3/16/17 10:59pm Doug Schulkind:

May all our canyons be misty! May all our flames be blue. And cool.
Avatar Thu. 3/16/17 10:59pm Jeff Golick:

@MrFab: nah, Misty Canyon is a safe google.
Avatar Thu. 3/16/17 11:00pm Jeff Golick:

(Dominic will be eligible in the next prize drawing.)
Avatar Thu. 3/16/17 11:00pm geezerette:

Dean, most good or interesting music evokes colors, places with their scents and climates, the sensation of being in a specific kind of architecture to me too. Although maybe thats not

Scraps, yeah! Cognitive dissonance for sure. I saw an interview once, not knowing what he would like, and he was sort of robotic. A sweet, kindly expression that never changed no matter how clueless his ideas seemed to be.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 3/16/17 11:03pm Scraps:

Damn, I somehow didn't track on the Bollywood prize. I was admiring it....
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 3/16/17 11:04pm Scraps:

what is the current cd prizes now....?
  Thu. 3/16/17 11:05pm Dean:

geezerette: Yes, and synaesthesia refers to confusions of sensory experiences that aren't merely metaphorical. Still, what is the pastrami symphony? I want to hear it. Slathered in hot mustard.
Avatar Thu. 3/16/17 11:05pm Jeff Golick:

Look at the care and foresight on the playlist -- Little Danny has prepared all necessary album covers and set them in their proper places! That is some service-y DJing right there! Support such tender loving radio presentation!
Avatar Thu. 3/16/17 11:06pm Jeff Golick:

@Scraps: this hour prizes are --

Danny was in a band! What were you guys called? Any recordings? It could be a pledge premium.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 3/16/17 11:07pm Little Danny:

Haha, thanks Jeff G. It was the least I could do!
Avatar Thu. 3/16/17 11:09pm Kris Holmes:

For a city with a worthwhile music heritage I have never found any records worth buying in El Paso.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 3/16/17 11:09pm Little Danny:

@MrFab: ooohhhh yes. It was ten years ago in Austin. We were called New Glow. At our best we sounded like Broadcast+V.U.+Stereolab. At our worst we sounded like a messy wall of echo
Avatar Thu. 3/16/17 11:10pm Jeff Golick:

Hey, so we've set a fundraising goal for this show, and are just now 68% of the way to the finish line. Who out there can get Little Danny, the Cool Blue Flame, the Drummer Stream, and WFMU all the way home?!
Avatar Thu. 3/16/17 11:10pm Jeff Golick:

@LD: yes, well, I do less.

Avatar Thu. 3/16/17 11:21pm Doug Schulkind:
