Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

JP from KC - you can 'spend' up to your annual S4L limit throughout the marathon. When you go through the pledge process, tick 'No Swag', then click on the 'send me a bill' tab and put a note in the box saying 'from my Swag for Life pledge' or something like that.
Have fun and play these shows like a proverbial slot machine.
  Fri. 3/10/17 12:07pm Dean:

See, instead of that weasly, "Depends on what the meaning of 'is' is," Bill should have said, "I don't know what the meaning of 'is' is, but it sure is funky."
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/10/17 12:08pm JP from KC:

Cool beans! Thanks, Stanley!
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 12:09pm Gary:

And speaking of show tunes ... Uncle Michael's Jesus Christ Superstar special was one of the greatest episodes of anything, ever, on this station!

That's probably the last time Michael N. will give.
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 12:55pm Gary:

Doug was my gateway DJ and I mostly listened to Doug and Jesse Kaminsky at first. I filled my first external hard drive with music first heard on their two shows.
  Fri. 3/10/17 12:56pm Dean:

Please don't squeeze the pledge cards.
Avatar    Fri. 3/10/17 12:56pm holland oats:

Started listening to WFMU via The Hound whenever I'd visit NYC from Boston in the mid-eighties. Such astounding radio.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/10/17 12:58pm JP from KC:

I have been listening for just over a year. I found out about WFMU through an article on great low power stations from paste magazine, and tuned in about a week before last year's marathon. The first thing I remember hearing was the Captain Beefheart loop Chris M. uses as bed music. I was totally hooked from there on out, and pledged as soon as the marathon started. Been listening almost daily ever since!
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 12:58pm Matt in Nebraska:

First WFMU show I heard was Michael Shelley doing a fill-in (it might have been a fill-in for Fool's Paradise) with one of the guys from They Might Be Giants on a Saturday night in February of 2000.
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 12:59pm Gary:

I think the first show I ever heard was Doug's Holy Warbles tribute
  Fri. 3/10/17 1:02pm Dean:

Can't remember. Diane Kamikaze? Tony Coulter? My email suggests it was in 2005, a buddy referring me to an archived Brian Turner show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/10/17 1:02pm Parq:

I did not see that. Way to go, Doug. Are you taking a grad-school course in fundraising?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/10/17 1:03pm adrian in mpls:

Doug's show first got me hooked - maybe around 2007? Fridays with Doug, and then Bryce, became a staple for me. And then Saturdays with Michael Shelley and Fool's Paradise. But I first learned about the station in the late 90s thanks to Yo La Tengo -- I was obsessed with YLT and heard about their marathon cover performances.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/10/17 1:05pm JP from KC:

So it appears the WFMU fundraising scale is filling up with people who died in 2016. I've been able to identify Fidel Castro, Abe Vigoda, and Alan Rickman. I don't know the other two, though...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/10/17 1:05pm Webhamster Henry:

I think I randomly tuned in not knowing what it was - terrestrial WFMU's signal is notoriously elusive - but eventually began specifically tuning in for Irwin, Ken, Kenny G ... and eventually I just kept it on all the time with a special antenna setup.
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 1:07pm Lane Gray:

Support it, y'all!
Fri. 3/10/17 1:08pm goyim in the am:

i'm a winner! I was anyway because I listen to the Drummer stream! Love, Colim in the Allim.
  Fri. 3/10/17 1:13pm Dean:

Hell, yeah! I'll spend that 75 Dollar Bill wisely. Yes, I have a turntable. Thank you!
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 1:14pm Gary:

Hey, yeah -- I'll be there from abut 6 PM on!
Avatar    Fri. 3/10/17 1:15pm 23 Wolves:

Think I started listening around 1997 via the Catalog of Curiosities and the early version of the web stream. WFMU has been a hugely positive thing in my life.
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 1:15pm Gary:

I awarded the 75 Dollar Bill to your neighbor, Tim, on Wednesday, Dean!
  Fri. 3/10/17 1:19pm Dean:

Right, I remember, Gary! I gotta keep up with the Tims.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/10/17 1:21pm Lewis:

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/10/17 1:27pm Uncle Michael:

I've set a goal...please help me meet it!
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 1:30pm Gary:

It's a big goal, but WE CAN DO IT, DRUMMER CIRCLE!
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 1:32pm listener james from westwood:

I'm hoping few here need an intro to Heron Oblivion, but if you're new, good gods, get in the running for this. It is a jewel.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/10/17 1:33pm JP from KC:

LOVE this album!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/10/17 1:34pm doctorjazz:

I'm actually not familiar with Heron Oblivion, sound sort of like Steeleye Span (I'm more likely to know stuff like Kamasi Washington). Sounds good, though. Maybe I'll put some Swag For Life in here...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/10/17 1:35pm adrian in mpls:

I'm a big Meg Baird fan - but I haven't taken the time to listen to Heron Oblivion yet - need to remedy that!
     Fri. 3/10/17 1:35pm Listener Robert:

I did listen fairly recently here to Frank O'Toole, who has a 50-50 chance of having been my gateway. It was either him or Pat Duncan.
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 1:39pm Lane Gray:

I know I said I wouldn't, but I did. You get half of tomorrow night's gig. Well, half the money. You don't get two hours of honky-tonk from me

I don't know how WFMU comment boards reflect the total listenership, but we knew, in the publishing-books boards 20 to 30 year ago, and the WeLL (Whole Earth 'Lectronic Link), also, it was 90+% talking vs just listening... I think it probably appx the same now
