Avatar Tue. 1/24/17 11:55am Tony Coulter:

Today's show will likely puzzle people who tune in late, so it'll be your job to explain what the hell is going on. I'll be airing two complete airchecks of radio shows from the early '80s, and I'm leaving it up to the hosts to announce the tracks. The shows are from France and Belgium, so the announcements are in French -- but it should still be pretty easy to figure out what the tracks they've played are.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 1/24/17 11:55am Carmichael:

Pre-howdy, Tony and soon-to-be people.
Avatar Tue. 1/24/17 11:56am Tony Coulter:

Hey, hey, Carmichael!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 1/24/17 12:00pm Aaron in Minneapolis:

Wait we dont get to see the cassettes themselves this time? sad!!!
Avatar Tue. 1/24/17 12:01pm Tony Coulter:

Hey, Aaron in Minneapolis! They're just generic cassettes with handwritten scribble, so....
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 1/24/17 12:03pm Aaron in Minneapolis:

But those are the best kind!
Avatar Tue. 1/24/17 12:03pm Tony Coulter:

You'll just have to imagine them....
Avatar    Tue. 1/24/17 12:03pm Webhamster Henry:

That's why I'm tuning in at the start this morning!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 1/24/17 12:03pm Cecile:

hola, tony!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 1/24/17 12:05pm Aaron in Minneapolis:

Will do! How did you get your paws on these?
Avatar Tue. 1/24/17 12:07pm Tony Coulter:

@ Aaron: They were given to me by the respective musicians/hosts. I actually have three different Marcœur shows. May play the others at some point in the future.
Avatar Tue. 1/24/17 12:07pm Tony Coulter:

Greetings, Webhamster & Cecile!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 1/24/17 12:08pm Aaron in Minneapolis:

Time to brush up on my french
Avatar Tue. 1/24/17 12:09pm Yvang:

Holala! Hello Tony and everyone!
Avatar Tue. 1/24/17 12:10pm Tony Coulter:

Ahoy, Yvang!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 1/24/17 12:22pm Cecile:

do you have a tracklisting you can put up here later or on FB?
Avatar Tue. 1/24/17 12:24pm Tony Coulter:

Don't have a written-out tracklist, no. I'm leaving it up to Albert and company to tell you. Want to be true to the 1980s radio experience when you usually wouldn't know what was playing until the end of the set
Avatar Tue. 1/24/17 12:25pm Tony Coulter:

Whenever a track isn't ID'ed, it's by Marcœur himself.
Avatar Tue. 1/24/17 12:27pm Tony Coulter:

Oh, guess you were asking about posting a tracklist after the show -- most likely that won't happen, no. Sorry....
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 1/24/17 12:28pm Cecile:

damn.
Avatar Tue. 1/24/17 12:29pm Tony Coulter:

You just have to follow along -- everything does get announced.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 1/24/17 12:30pm dale:

late to the party - what are we listing to? KIDDING!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 1/24/17 12:30pm Cecile:

yeah, but I keep jumping up to do work stuff. I'll have to listen on archives.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 1/24/17 12:31pm Carmichael:

Some French speaker will just have to list them. Any takers?
Avatar Tue. 1/24/17 12:31pm Tony Coulter:

@ Cecile: Wont be an archive of this show. We're really going back to the '80s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 1/24/17 12:31pm dale:

those ear phones always got waxy. anyone use a pillow speaker anymore?
Avatar Tue. 1/24/17 12:31pm Tony Coulter:

Hey, Dale!!
  Tue. 1/24/17 12:32pm Mark Williams:

I like the idea, Tony.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 1/24/17 12:33pm dale:

pretty great sound for a cassette recorded 35 years ago.
Avatar Tue. 1/24/17 12:33pm Tony Coulter:

Hey there, Mark! Glad you approve....
Avatar Tue. 1/24/17 12:35pm Kay:

The Amazing Wrist Radio ad is really misleading. "Like the one used by the famous detective character," and the image of broadcast waves between the two cartoon characters pictured, they make it seem like a two-way radio. Ever feel like you've been sold a bill of goods?
Avatar Tue. 1/24/17 12:37pm Tony Coulter:

Hey hey, Kay!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 1/24/17 12:37pm Cecile:

yes!
  Tue. 1/24/17 12:37pm Mark Williams:

ok, now this reggae'ish tune is fun. Never heard this. Or have I and forgotten about it? Do you recognize it, Tony? Anyone?
Avatar Tue. 1/24/17 12:39pm Tony Coulter:

I'm breaking the rules here, but...it's Snakefinger.
Avatar Tue. 1/24/17 12:39pm Tony Coulter:

"The Man in the Dark Sedan"
Avatar Tue. 1/24/17 12:39pm Kay:

Sounds like...oh too late! I might have guessed Oingo Boingo.
  Tue. 1/24/17 12:40pm Mark Williams:

lovely cut. Thanks Tony.
Avatar Tue. 1/24/17 12:41pm Tony Coulter:

They do announce it shortly.
  Tue. 1/24/17 12:41pm Mark Williams:

some time back I was keeping a loose list of reggae/dub-inspired tunes/bands from the late '70s/early '80s. Most were British, of course. Shall add this one to the pile.
Avatar Tue. 1/24/17 12:41pm Tony Coulter:

And here is Fred Frith (can't help myself)
  Tue. 1/24/17 12:44pm Mark Williams:

so for those old enough to remember these years, radio like this truly felt like some utter mystery. A gift, an opening, just... many things that are easier to recognize now looking back. Anticipation was perhaps the most prevalent and driving emotion and state of mind one felt. I think anticipation has gone way down in our era, which is perhaps the little lesson embedded in today's show.
Avatar Tue. 1/24/17 12:49pm Tony Coulter:

Some regular listeners to this show should recognize this track. Dean? Vincent Priceless?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 1/24/17 12:51pm dale:

spyrogyra? not really.
Avatar Tue. 1/24/17 12:51pm Tony Coulter:

@ Mark: Well said. More undivided attention was also required back then....
  Tue. 1/24/17 12:52pm Dean:

I'm hearing XTC cut with Happy the Man, but it isn't familiar.
  Tue. 1/24/17 12:52pm Dean:

Could be Bruford drumming...
Avatar Tue. 1/24/17 12:53pm Tony Coulter:

It's Bruford's "Age of Information."
  Tue. 1/24/17 12:53pm Dean:

Heh!
Avatar    Tue. 1/24/17 12:53pm Webhamster Henry:

I definitely heard the Dave Stewart in there.
Avatar Tue. 1/24/17 12:54pm Tony Coulter:

And here's an old fave of mine.
  Tue. 1/24/17 12:55pm Mark Williams:

Tony, what radio station was this hosted on, do you know? What circumstances led to them having a show, and was it a one-off or semi-regular thing?
Avatar Tue. 1/24/17 12:57pm Tony Coulter:

@ Mark: I do know the station, but would rather not say. I got this tape from Marcœur, so I know he would approve of this show, but I have not been in contact with the station. His show was more than a one-off -- I have two other episodes, and I believe there were others as well.
Avatar    Tue. 1/24/17 12:58pm Mayuko:

Good afternoon, Tony and all!
Avatar Tue. 1/24/17 12:58pm Tony Coulter:

Hey there, Mayuko!!!!
Avatar Tue. 1/24/17 12:59pm Tony Coulter:

I really shouldn't tell you what's playing, but I just can't help myself: this is the Beefheart-offshoot band Mallard.
Avatar Tue. 1/24/17 1:02pm Tony Coulter:

And here is Ferdinand Richard of Etron Fou.
Avatar Tue. 1/24/17 1:05pm Tony Coulter:

Just think of me as the annoying know-it-all friend who recognizes all the tracks on the radio.
  Tue. 1/24/17 1:09pm Mark Williams:

I believe you've just tee'ed up a certain response, Tony...
Avatar Tue. 1/24/17 1:10pm Tony Coulter:

And here is Godley & Creme
Avatar    Tue. 1/24/17 1:11pm Mayuko:

I'm so glad I didn't miss this show!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 1/24/17 1:13pm Cecile:

This is very Zappa like.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 1/24/17 1:13pm Cecile:

you know all the 10ccs are alive. I am hoping for a reunion some year.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 1/24/17 1:13pm Cecile:

original 10cc,s that is.
Avatar Tue. 1/24/17 1:15pm Tony Coulter:

... and this is Marcœur himself (as you can probably tell by now)....
Avatar    Tue. 1/24/17 1:20pm Guido from Cologne:

Hello Tony!
Avatar Tue. 1/24/17 1:20pm Tony Coulter:

Hey there, Guido!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 1/24/17 1:21pm Carmichael:

If you can get Gouldman and Eric Stewart to be in the same room ever again ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 1/24/17 1:22pm Cecile:

Yes. That is a problem. Maybe they can do 10c3 with Godley, Creme and Gouldman.
Avatar Tue. 1/24/17 1:29pm Tony Coulter:

This has been Marcœur's own music for awhile....
Avatar    Tue. 1/24/17 1:29pm Guido from Cologne:

Snakefinger!

Avatar Tue. 1/24/17 1:43pm Tony Coulter:

Hey, doctorjazz! Glad to hear it!
Avatar Tue. 1/24/17 1:46pm Tony Coulter:

This now is D.D.A.A.....
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 1/24/17 1:49pm Scraps:

This is weird for me. I was working at Peaches (a chain music retailer) at 18-19 years old in 1982-83, and I bought imports and avant-garde stuff for the store (because nobody else wanted to). I was fascinated by these weird musicians, but at the time I mostly didn't know them.

This jerks me back in time more than you know, Tony! Staring at these LP covers by (say) the Virgin Prunes, wondering.
Avatar    Tue. 1/24/17 1:49pm Guido from Cologne:

i once interviewed Allain Neffe (both with Pseudo Code and husband of Nadine).
still have a bunch of insane tapes
Avatar Tue. 1/24/17 1:50pm Tony Coulter:

Heya, Scraps! Glad to be that jerk that's jerking you back!
Avatar Tue. 1/24/17 1:52pm Tony Coulter:

Yes, it's funny how a current-day show of tracks from the early '80s is not the same as a radio show from the early '80s playing then-new tracks.
  Tue. 1/24/17 1:53pm Mark Williams:

wait, what was the name of that compilation?
Avatar Tue. 1/24/17 1:55pm Tony Coulter:

Umm -- I've heard of it, but now I've forgotten what she said. Got distracted by typing!
Avatar Tue. 1/24/17 1:55pm Tony Coulter:

This here is Pascal Comelade....
Avatar Tue. 1/24/17 1:56pm Tony Coulter:

This here pumpkin song, I mean....
Avatar    Tue. 1/24/17 1:58pm Guido from Cologne:

I know this track
  Tue. 1/24/17 1:59pm Mark Williams:

sounds like Mal on guitar
Avatar    Tue. 1/24/17 1:59pm Guido from Cologne:

but cannot re-collect what it is.
Avatar Tue. 1/24/17 2:01pm Tony Coulter:

Yep, definitely Daniel Malempré on guitar. I also recognize this (and have it) but am forgetting exactly what it is. We shall find out soon!
Avatar    Tue. 1/24/17 2:02pm geezerette:

It's so good to feel happy! Grateful for this, driving away sun lamped, angry orange demons.
Avatar Tue. 1/24/17 2:02pm Rich in Washington:

This is fantastic. Agreed, Tony, there's some slight missing vitality listening to 80s music on a current show vs hearing radio shows from the 80s, with them playing (then) new music.
Ive got quite a few airchecks of other people's shows from the early to mid 80s that I plan on ripping and uploading to Archive.org.
  Tue. 1/24/17 2:04pm Mark Williams:

well... I couldn't make out if she mentioned that track or not. You Tony? I was going to guess it was Subject.
Avatar Tue. 1/24/17 2:06pm Tony Coulter:

She actually didn't back announce, just announced the Officer track. I was thinking Subject too, or maybe Human Flesh (who are on now).
Avatar Tue. 1/24/17 2:07pm Tony Coulter:

Here's the comp she's talking about: www.discogs.com...

Avatar Tue. 1/24/17 2:08pm Tony Coulter:

Hey, James! Glad you're here!
  Tue. 1/24/17 2:09pm Mark Williams:

I was about to post that, and sure enough, here's Zazou. Looks like she's just playing track after track. But the song I liked so much didn't sound like Victor Nubla.
Avatar Tue. 1/24/17 2:10pm Tony Coulter:

Yeah, I think that track you liked was before they started playing this comp. Right now it's Ptôse, from the comp.
