Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

What kind of gate we talking here? All that comes to mind in context that might have a threshold would be the gate on a transistor triode -- like there's a pot you adjust such that any voltage less than whatever means that triode sees nothing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 1/20/17 12:29pm Uncle Michael:

Jeff! rf! Robert!

Something like that...
     Fri. 1/20/17 12:29pm Listener Robert:

So for instance, an audio amplifier could have a setting such that less than a certain input keeps the output flat.

Avatar Fri. 1/20/17 12:33pm geezerette:

Ha! ain't it the truth!
     Fri. 1/20/17 12:33pm Listener Robert:

Meaning a squelch? Like below a certain threshold, 0 comes thru? Then yeah, that would function like (& probably be) a pot on the input to a linear transistor amp...unless this gate is already at the digital level.
  Fri. 1/20/17 12:33pm 67tele:

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 1/20/17 12:39pm Uncle Michael:

Right, the mic picks up below a theshhold, an the circuit stays closed. The threshold was set too high.
Avatar Fri. 1/20/17 12:40pm Alex In Illinois:

This song was actually recorded before digitally sampling was invented. So either they did a lot of tape splicing or the singers were actually singing the same phrase over again.

Avatar Fri. 1/20/17 12:46pm Lane Gray:

Listener Robert, some multieffects units have a noise gate built into them, but they're never as simple as what you describe, as those are pretty much instant. I've never heard a noise gate with less than about 200ms latency. And in some amps, you can't disable them. VERY annoying if you put them after a volume pedal. When I hit a string, I damn well expect a note to jump out of the speaker. Hopefully Michael's lacks the latency

@still b/p: In some on-line conversations on some forum, I got the idea that a 'bot was posting, but never got confirmed that it was human, and years ago, an entity contacted my on a dating site, and I was never sure whether it was human or 'bot, since "her" conversation was very dull.

At work, I once suggested that the behavior of a certain Database Administrator was more worthy of a 'bot than an organic entity.

Catching up on comments -- Lane Gray, I wish I could adjust the latency on our 'net-based phone service, as it often cuts off the beginning of what my friend Bob says, as in the Wally Ballou/Balloo bits.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/20/17 2:21pm Parq:

God, you're right -- the first FOW album will be 20 years old this year!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/20/17 2:22pm annie:

Barrence Whitfield singing about Oscar Levant sums up the WFMUniverse as well as anything else I can think of.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 1/20/17 2:46pm doctorjazz:

@Brian in UK, you ill, or just suffering from over celebrating the birthday (or cat overload)?

Another tune transcendentally performed by Keith Jarrett's trio sans lyrics.

re: Let's Get Lost.
Fine acting and direction, but not as insightful as I hoped it would be.

We'll blame that on your youth.

Is it just me or are the first notes of the Cry Me A River lyric hard to hit accurately when you sing that first line aloud casually? Try it.
Avatar Fri. 1/20/17 3:02pm Jeff Golick:

Hey, @Jason. Doug went over, too, so UM is paying it forward.
