Avatar Fri. 1/13/17 9:07am Alex In Illinois:

Good Morning! I love songs with geographical references in their titles.
Avatar Fri. 1/13/17 9:08am Doug Schulkind:

"Alex in Illinois" likes titles with geographical references in the title. Big surprise!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/13/17 9:11am Brian in UK:

Hello Doug. Hiatus can give you a nasty rash.

Stanley, nice of you to show your face.
Avatar Fri. 1/13/17 9:11am Doug Schulkind:

Here's a little story I wrote about Mance Lipscomb: www.wfmu.org...
Avatar Fri. 1/13/17 9:11am Alex In Illinois:

St. Louis Blues, Port Arthur Blues, Newport News Blues.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/13/17 9:12am Brian in UK:

Well I'll Go to the Top of Our Stairs Blues.
Avatar Fri. 1/13/17 9:16am Doug Schulkind:

Don't make any rash decisions, Brian in UK.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/13/17 9:17am Stanley:

Brian - I'm back from my travails.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/13/17 9:19am Brian in UK:

Sahib Stanley returns from the sub continent with tales and wisdom gleaned from his transendental (teeth to you and me) experience.
  Fri. 1/13/17 9:19am melinda:

You don't usually hear about arthritis in blues songs.
Avatar Fri. 1/13/17 9:23am Doug Schulkind:

Actually, sort of not true, melinda. There are 100s of songs about having the "jake leg." It's not exactly arthritis, but close enough for me to mention it and sound authoritative.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 1/13/17 9:24am doctorjazz:

Come Back Blues sounds like blues after soul music came to the fore, vocal style owes much to gospel (the timing of it is right). No longer that strict holy/devil music split.
Avatar Fri. 1/13/17 9:28am Alex In Illinois:

But "Jake Leg" is caused by drinking tainted "Jamaican Ginger".
  Fri. 1/13/17 9:28am Lore:

Been ruminating on this Emmett Murray tune quite a bit lately.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/13/17 9:29am Stanley:

Brian - for once my teeth held out.
Only minor ailments and mental meltdowns, this time.
Usual highs and lows.
Avatar Fri. 1/13/17 9:30am Alex In Illinois:

I mean "was" caused, by drinking tainted "Jamaican Ginger". I don't think you are likely to find a batch of that stuff with a dangerous chemical added to hide the alcohol content these days.
  Fri. 1/13/17 9:33am melinda:

I can imagine songs mentioning jake leg, it's hearing the word 'arthritis' that's different. Medical terminology vs. colloquial speech.
Avatar Fri. 1/13/17 9:34am Doug Schulkind:

Your presence is a joybringer, Lore.
Avatar Fri. 1/13/17 9:36am Doug Schulkind:

@Alex in Illinois
You are correct, Sir. I just couldn't pass up the opportunity to reference songs about malfunctioning limbs. (Though jake leg was much more than just an affliction of the extremities.)
  Fri. 1/13/17 9:40am Ramblin' Ray:

Greetings all! May all your blues be pentatonic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/13/17 9:41am Ike:

So it's still safe to drink D&G Ginger Beer? Ha ha.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/13/17 9:42am Brian in UK:

@Ike if you like thirteen spoons of sugar per tin.
Avatar Fri. 1/13/17 9:42am Doug Schulkind:

Pentaginandtonic, Ramblin Ray!

Good morning, Mr Ike!

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/13/17 9:45am Artie Haywire:

A nice write-up on the song "I'm Gonna Dig Myself A Hole" - atomicplatters.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/13/17 9:45am Ike:

Worse than that, Brian, D&G is tainted w/actual high-fructose corn syrup instead of real sugar! But it's about half the price (or less) of the fancy ones like Maine Root or Fentimans.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/13/17 9:45am annie:

back when Red's Ginger Brew were bottling in a NYC brewery, i recall we got a shipment of the brew in our weekly grocery order. one of the bottles had a Molson's label inside the bottle with the drink. steve told me they used that bottler so it made sense.. .. just funny.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/13/17 9:46am annie:

i'd say maine root is the best of all the ginger ales.
Avatar Fri. 1/13/17 9:47am Doug Schulkind:

Smilin' Joe is singing about taking a pee.
Avatar Fri. 1/13/17 9:47am Doug Schulkind:

Thank you for that intelligence, Prof. Haywire!
Avatar Fri. 1/13/17 9:47am Alex In Illinois:

@annie: Maybe that label that was free inside the bottle of Red's could be redeemed for a free bottle of Molson's. Well, I probably would have tried that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/13/17 9:48am Artie Haywire:

Ringing in on behalf of Blenheim fine ginger ale. Though it's not in the Jamaican ginger beer style.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/13/17 9:48am Brian in UK:

Trouble is, I like D&G GB. Keep meaning to make my own.
Done made our own lemonade & elderflower cordial. They all take a load of sugar which ever way you cut it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/13/17 9:48am Ike:

Agreed @Annie, Maine Root slays. Nice & spicy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/13/17 9:50am Brian in UK:

Reminds me of Attila the policeman in Under Milk Wood. He pee'd in his helmet at night. Trouble is he forgot that fact when he came to putting on the helmet in the morning.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/13/17 9:50am annie:

that would have been cool, alex.. i hadn't thought if that!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/13/17 9:50am Artie Haywire:

The thing about sugar is that it can taste pretty good. Especially when it's balancing something nice and sour. I'll have to seek out some of this Maine Root.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/13/17 9:52am annie:

artie, you'll never look back.

Avatar Fri. 1/13/17 9:57am βrian:

Maine Root is excellent. Another that I had last summer blew my socks off:
northwoodssoda.com...
Avatar Fri. 1/13/17 9:57am Alex In Illinois:

I have made Ginger beer a few times. A lot of sugar went into it, but also so did a whole pack of brewer's yeast each time, and after 10 days, that yeast metabolized most of the sugar into something else.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/13/17 9:58am Uncle Michael:

I'm an aficionado of VERY hot ginger beer. Some of the hot ones have added capsicum.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/13/17 10:01am Uncle Michael:

Blenheim's with the pink cap is the bomb. Maine Root is very good. Stewarts is very good.
Avatar Fri. 1/13/17 10:05am Doug Schulkind:

Good day, cool βrian and VERY hot Uncle Michael!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/13/17 10:05am Parq:

In NYC, see, it was 60F last night and is expected to be 30F tonight. A weather roller-coaster. And speaking of ginger, I understand it's Kiss a Redhead Day. Ladies in Squirrel Hill, take note!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 1/13/17 10:05am melinda:

I recall liking Maine Root but I've had to quit sugary drinks. Maybe when weather starts warming up I'll try concocting my own substitute.
Avatar Fri. 1/13/17 10:05am Webhamster Henry:

This is like the Comedian Harmonists with a Spanish accent!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/13/17 10:05am annie:

Avatar Fri. 1/13/17 10:06am Doug Schulkind:

YES, Webhamster Henry. YES.

I just read that this Los Zafiros tune was featured in a Breaking Bad episode. Can anyone confirm?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/13/17 10:08am Jesse K:

I've had the Blenheim's a few times. Good but they add schmutz. I thought the Northwoods was better.
Avatar Fri. 1/13/17 10:18am Doug Schulkind:

Grossest thing I've read on Twitter in the last 10 seconds:

"Disney reported to be negotiating with Carrie Fisher's estate for rights to her digital image."
Avatar Fri. 1/13/17 10:19am Doug Schulkind:

@βrian
You've got a little schmutz. (Licks thumb and then wipes it off βrian without asking first.)
Avatar Fri. 1/13/17 10:21am bobdc:

The movie "El Cantante" about Lavoe starring Marc Anthony and Jennifer Lopez looks like a train wreck, but I've been tempted to watch it because sometime train wrecks are entertaining. Has anyone else seen this?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/13/17 10:21am Brian in UK:

One of Rueben Blades great songs.
Avatar Fri. 1/13/17 10:21am βrian:

*Aw, mom!*
Y'all should try Ginger Jack from Shelburne Orchards, too. I take credit for giving them the idea.
Avatar Fri. 1/13/17 10:21am Jeff Golick:

I really like the lack of fidelity in the video/GIF today. There's something pleasing about the non-HD quality.
Avatar Fri. 1/13/17 10:23am Doug Schulkind:

@Brian in UK
I have always preferred Rubén Blades the writer to Rubén Blades the singer.
Avatar Fri. 1/13/17 10:24am Doug Schulkind:

@Jeff Golick
To hell with fidelity.
Avatar Fri. 1/13/17 10:25am Doug Schulkind:

There just hast to have been a teen pop star somewhere in the world with the stage name Fidelity Castro, amirite?!?!
Avatar Fri. 1/13/17 10:28am Little Danny:

G'morning Doug an' all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/13/17 10:29am Brian in UK:

Amirite - a rather beautiful greyish/black stone found only in Tahiti in the last decade of the Nineteenth Century. It brought bad luck to the person who found it and caused their hands and feet to become webbed and them to have awkward feelings towards their siblings. (more citations needed)

@Uncle Michael
Yup. Screwed that up.

@Little Danny
You are a man of refined, yet crude, taste!
Avatar Fri. 1/13/17 10:37am Little Danny:

I like Sonny Stitt quite a bit, especially his early Bird stylings that were originally dismissed
Avatar Fri. 1/13/17 10:37am Jeff Golick:

Almost played a version of this on Xmas day. But didn't and happy to hear it here.
Avatar Fri. 1/13/17 10:39am Doug Schulkind:

Avatar Fri. 1/13/17 10:39am Doug Schulkind:

@Little Danny
One of the reasons Stitt switched from alto to tenor.
Avatar Fri. 1/13/17 10:40am Doug Schulkind:

You know who wrote the liner notes to this Eric Dolphy record?

Nat Hentoff
Avatar Fri. 1/13/17 10:42am Little Danny:

Mischa Mengelberg doing his best Monk. Great Dolphy track, Doug, reminded me a bit of some of Monk's early Blue Note sides like "Humph"
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/13/17 10:42am Artie Haywire:

Origin tales of Blenheim have the schmutziness being the starting point, in the form of mineral ridden, sulphurous well water. Flavored with ginger, sugar and carbonation, those starting flavors became complements and formed something else entirely. Interesting story, who knows if it's true?
Avatar Fri. 1/13/17 10:43am Doug Schulkind:

And Mengelberg was composer of that track, too.
Avatar Fri. 1/13/17 10:45am Doug Schulkind:

This Curtis Amy record was a rare Verve release produced by Joel Dorn.

My biggest worry is a third armpit.
  Fri. 1/13/17 11:26am Dean:

Er, DON'T SHOOT!
Avatar Fri. 1/13/17 11:26am chromaphone:

I've only heard Manuel Galban's version of this one. Cool!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/13/17 11:27am Brian in UK:

I'm not SHOUTING.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/13/17 11:27am Uncle Michael:

I don't have anything spectacular planned for today but I hope you'll hang out with me at the top of the hour in the vain belief that I'm lying.

US Dept. of Justice Rahm's Chicago an old asshole.

Greetings, Chromaphone. Yes, sounds from Latin music-besotted West Africa!
Avatar Fri. 1/13/17 11:28am Doug Schulkind:

Septeto Nacional did a famous version of this.
  Fri. 1/13/17 11:29am Dean:

Vocalist sounded a bit like David Hidalgo. When I worked at a public library in LA County he would come in with his kids.
Avatar Fri. 1/13/17 11:30am chromaphone:

I wish Hidalgo and Ribot would record album together.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/13/17 11:31am Brian in UK:

When I saw Los Lobos, I loved the way he (David Hidalgo) used to hitch up his jeans after every song. So uncool but he did not care.
Avatar Fri. 1/13/17 11:31am Doug Schulkind:

@Dean
Speaking of David Hidalgo, I played Latin Playboys earlier in the show.
Avatar Fri. 1/13/17 11:32am chromaphone:

I also wish the Latin Playboys would make another album :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/13/17 11:33am Brian in UK:

Played their first record, Will The Wolf Survive, the other week, still sounds good.
  Fri. 1/13/17 11:34am Dean:

Totally missed that, but then I only tuned in for the DOJ news.

Even though I lived in their 'hood, if you will, I've only heard Los Lobos live once, and that was when they were one of the opening acts for P.I.L. at Olympic Auditorium. Another opening act, iirc, was Kipper Kids.
Avatar Fri. 1/13/17 11:34am Jeff Golick:

Speaking of Ribot, I got to see him play on Sunday, with a bunch of other folks, in a round-robin, track-for-track retelling of the SOLO MONK record. He, violinist Charles Burnham, and bassist Trevor Dunn opened the show with "Dinah." Went up from there.
  Fri. 1/13/17 11:35am Dean:

Have a bunch of their records, though. La Pistola y el Corazon remains pretty special.
Avatar Fri. 1/13/17 11:36am chromaphone:

Wow Jeff G!

I love to remind the johnny rebs down here it was Mexican silver dollars that were the exchange of choice and necessity during the glorious war. Mexican silver dollars propped up the confederacy.

Ever notice how Friday the 20th *always* follows the 13th? I don't think that's just a coincidence.
Avatar Fri. 1/13/17 11:50am Doug Schulkind:

@holland oats
Nice thought. Alice Clark is a little, um, "jazzier" I would say. But same lower-register singing voice.
Avatar Fri. 1/13/17 11:52am βrian:

Now, you have me thinking of scotch-drinking altos. Woo.

Avatar Fri. 1/13/17 11:53am Little Danny:

Oh wow, an instrumental version of "I Have Faith in You." I only know the one with Edwin Starr's vocals
