Avatar Fri. 1/6/17 9:45am Jeff Golick:

Counter-programming. So just do your regular show, as the love and generosity typically on display here couldn't run more counter to that frightening clown show in DC.

I read about how good chunks of a graduating class in Australia reacted to the commencement speech of a loathed conservative PM by turning their backs on him. I would be honored to be part of a musical analogue by listening live here and to UM's show.

Have you heard the version of "If I Were A Carpenter" by The Don Carrington Trio?
  Fri. 1/6/17 10:11am Mr C:

This is a Goffin/King song produced by Bert Berns I believe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 1/6/17 10:12am melinda:

I think Tim Hardin's is still my favorite, but I haven't heard a cover I didn't like.

OOps, wrong comments thread...
I didn't see the New Yorker article, but I was at NJ PAC for a different show when she was at the main stage. We had time to watch her on a TV monitor in the lobby for a while, and she didn't do much singing for a while, just strutting her stuff (which I suppose she's entitled to do...)

The Sash, of course.

I don't trust the 1958 date on that Oscar Perry. But the shitty/quaint use of echo (referenced by Little Danny) suggests '58 could be true. Any thoughts?
Avatar Fri. 1/6/17 10:44am still b/p:

I do like Dionne's Bacharach-David material/period, but great to hear her open up a different energy with Holland-Dozier-Holland.

Doug, got anything by Eileen Dover?
  Fri. 1/6/17 10:48am Mr C:

I looked it up. Says Lee J label, 1958. Sounds early 60s production though. A mystery for the ages..
Avatar Fri. 1/6/17 10:49am Doug Schulkind:

We used to call Eileen "White Cliffs" Dover, Brian.

@Mr. C
That's what I see, too. But '58 feels a bit early. I've also seen a 1960 reference.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/6/17 10:50am Brian in UK:

Doug, was this Stevie album the one where the letters fell out the front cover?
Avatar Fri. 1/6/17 10:51am Little Danny:

1960 feels right for the Perry. That side was directly referencing "I'll Take Care of You," a charting 45 for Bobby Blue Bland in 1959
Avatar Fri. 1/6/17 10:52am Doug Schulkind:

Yes, Brian: www.albumkings.xyz...

I like that flavor.

Avatar Fri. 1/6/17 10:56am Doug Schulkind:

1971 is kinda taking over the show. A pretty good year for me, though the Pirates beat my Orioles in the Series. I was still a Washington Senators fan (until they deserted me in 1973).
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 1/6/17 10:56am melinda:

@BrianUK:ndbob is in the middle of relocating to Athens, GA, I believe.

Yes, our dear brother listener ndbob is moving from Indiana to Athens, GA. He will remain ndbob and not become gabob.

Howdy, burke. The Senators deserted my twice. They became the Minnesota Twins in 1962 and then the Texas Rangers in '72.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/6/17 10:59am annie:

i kinda got used to indybob, though, i wonder what he'll do.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/6/17 11:01am Parq:

Nice observation. Belafonte was a huge star when this was recorded, so not so outlandish a thought!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/6/17 11:08am annie:

there are always buskers outside the Earthfare here and i hear some pretty amazing vocalists; i heard one on wednesday that tore my heart out with her soulful voice. i wonder, doug, if you've ever thought of a show full of newbies and indy singers. she would be a fine candidate
Avatar Fri. 1/6/17 11:09am Jeff Golick:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/6/17 11:09am Carmichael:

@BUK: But first, place this little tab on you tongue and wait 30 minutes ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/6/17 11:17am Parq:

βrian, I remember when the media thought that disco was a type of rock music. For instance, a magazine articles about Studio 54 might include the sentence, "ordinary citizens are kept waiting in the cold all night while celebrities and the glamorous dance to the rock music inside."
Avatar Fri. 1/6/17 11:17am Doug Schulkind:

@still b/p
The best "rain" songs are songs that have the sound of rain in them.
Avatar Fri. 1/6/17 11:18am burke:

Whoa, great slowed-down version...eat your heart out, Freddy Fender.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/6/17 11:18am Scraps:

@βrian: I'm 52. I lived through disco. Disco had good and bad, like all genres. Shrug.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 1/6/17 11:18am doctorjazz:

@Annie-Music teacher was what got me into jazz as well, had tried and not succeeded until I had a college course on Jazz History. Of course, having Chuck Israels (bass for Bill Evans) as teacher, with a substitute teacher like Lee Konitz (who brought his horn and did lessons on electric Miles) didn't hurt. Of course, I didn't yet know who these folks were when I took the course

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 1/6/17 11:20am doctorjazz:

I think Disco came back in a BIG way in dance music past decade or so (got its revenge), the 4 beat unchanging bass drum rhythm is there as strong as it ever was.
Avatar Fri. 1/6/17 11:20am Doug Schulkind:

I love jazz. I like oxygen.
Avatar Fri. 1/6/17 11:21am Little Danny:

@Scraps: looks like they're going full digital instead of refurbishing their aging FM broadcast infrastructure. Makes a certain kind of sense, I guess, though I do cry for those driving cars with no digital capabilities.
Avatar Fri. 1/6/17 11:32am still b/p:

National Norway radio operations going digital for what they regard as better clarity and reliability. Local stations will be out of it a few years later. But for a few reasons not everyone's thrilled, will have to get converters "...two million cars in Norway — a country of just five million people — don't have digital audio broadcasting receivers."
Avatar Fri. 1/6/17 11:33am Doug Schulkind:

Avatar Fri. 1/6/17 11:33am βrian:

And soon enough those broadcasts will be in Russian.
Avatar Fri. 1/6/17 11:34am Jeff Golick:

Cars drive (ahem) a lot of business decisions. The fact that one can still buy audiobooks on cassette is almost entirely down to the fact that there are still many cars on the road today with cassette players in them.
