Hey drummers! Out of town, not sure I'll get to listen in real time. Staying at a friends house in Philadelphia, went to see Nels Cline, Marshall Allen, Gerald Cleaver @ Johnny Brenda's.last night, fun, loud skronking affair. They'll be back Sunday night with guest Marshall Allen for anyone in the area.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/9/16 8:58am Doug Schulkind:

Fun loud skronking is my business, Doc!

As a fan of dj Micah, I am looking forward to never again missing the opening of Doug's show 'cause Marty McS is playing something cool or because I can't get to my internet radio fast enough to switch over. Hi all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/9/16 9:15am Doug Schulkind:

Good morning, Alex in Illinois, Uncle Michael in Topeka, Buddy Rich in Drummer Heaven.

@Goyim in the AM

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/9/16 9:24am Doug Schulkind:

Maybe we should have Phyllis Diller join the Friday crew?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/9/16 9:25am annie:

well, ndbob, i'm usually an egg-man myself, but the chill in the air dictated something more substantial. the chicken is just replacing the eggs.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/9/16 9:30am Maggie B.:

aw, Doug! Love you and all the drummers right back. And it was cathartic to share layoff stories last week. thanks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/9/16 9:30am Brian in UK:

Hello Doug.

@Goyim the depressing thing about the elections in Austria last week was the fact that the reports said who had lost before saying who had won.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/9/16 9:33am Goyim in the AM:

@Brian -- for me, the most depressing thins is that the far right candidate was ultimately stopped by the mainstream conservative party and its voters actually pulling themselves together and voting with some respect for the rest of the world -- that's depressing because that ain't happening in the US or the UK any time soon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/9/16 9:35am Goyim in the AM:

Also it's not a coincidence that Merkel suddenly came on with the "tough on Islamic immigration" hoo-ha immediately thereafter -- the German conservatives have misread the Van der Bellen victory as a sign that the Austrian mainstream parties' godawful triangulation on that stuff helped defeat the bad guys -- and I think that's a bad mistake.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/9/16 9:35am Brian in UK:

Goyim, they do have the benefit of hindsight to a small extent. If the vote to leave the EU was taken again over here, my guess it would be to leave.
Avatar Fri. 12/9/16 9:36am guy mauve:

Someone told me to treat cauliflower like smashed potatoes.

Toss the au-gratin and party down.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/9/16 9:36am Brian in UK:

Always steam cauliflowers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/9/16 9:38am holland oats:

drumma! peoples! crusty crustaceans!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/9/16 9:38am Brian in UK:

Agree about Merkel and guess that she is standing again to fight the far right. Just a hunch as Charles Laughton might say.
Avatar Fri. 12/9/16 9:38am guy mauve:

That is after it is steamed. Mash it up and cheese it down.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/9/16 9:38am Doug Schulkind:

Make the shrimp jump "like a natural man"? Like a natural man!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/9/16 9:39am Brian in UK:

Doug does this mean some Abdullah Ibraheim (s'cuse spelling)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/9/16 9:40am Brian in UK:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/9/16 9:41am Doug Schulkind:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/9/16 9:42am Brian in UK:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/9/16 9:44am Brian in UK:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/9/16 9:45am Brian in UK:

Peace indeed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/9/16 9:45am Doug Schulkind:

From Dave Bartholomew's "Shrimp & Gumbo" to Dollar Brand's "Shrimp Boats."

We've got a high art/higher art thing going on here.
Avatar Fri. 12/9/16 9:47am chromaphone:

Apparently shrimp boats makes one happy according to Dollar Brand.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/9/16 9:47am βrian:

So familiar, Abdullah's trill.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/9/16 9:48am Goyim in the AM:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/9/16 9:48am Jeff Golick:

Nothing better than this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/9/16 9:49am Doug Schulkind:

Abduallah is essentially praying for shrimp, I think.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/9/16 9:49am doctorjazz:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/9/16 9:50am Doug Schulkind:

Dave Brubeck, R.I.P. (91) a few days ago .. somehow got crowded out by other celebrity deaths.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/9/16 9:52am burke:

Mouthwatering! Is it lunchtime yet?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/9/16 9:52am Webhamster Henry:

sorry old news popped up!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/9/16 9:53am Doug Schulkind:

My policy is to put on the playlist the name of the artist as it appears on the record. A flawed policy, perhaps, but it provides order in my mind.

@Webhamster Henry
I believe Mr. Brubeck passed a while ago. 2012. But we mourn him still.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/9/16 9:53am Webhamster Henry:

That's one reason fake news is so successful - real news can be so old!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/9/16 9:53am Doug Schulkind:

Glad to see you, burke. Grab a napkin and dig in!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/9/16 9:53am βrian:

The shrimp are waving their stalks in adulation.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/9/16 9:54am Doug Schulkind:

The only stalkers we accept here, βrian.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/9/16 9:55am Jeff Golick:

"The shrimp store called...and they'd like a copy of this set to play in-store." Or am I misremembering it...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/9/16 9:55am Webhamster Henry:

In my head is a cheezy version of Shrimp Boats that this is not quite wiping out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/9/16 9:56am Doug Schulkind:

Just the phrase "shrimp store" gives me goosebumps.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/9/16 9:56am Brian in UK:

This last melody is straight out of a Delgados song. No idea which one though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/9/16 9:56am Jeff Golick:

Yeah, misremembered: en.wikipedia.org...
Avatar Fri. 12/9/16 9:57am glenn:

ya gotta have life policies. me, i don't answer the phone after 9:00 p.m., and i refuse to eat capers.
Avatar Fri. 12/9/16 9:57am glenn:

there are others, but those are the highlights.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/9/16 9:58am βrian:

Rule #1: If you don't caper, you can't dance.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/9/16 9:58am Doug Schulkind:

@Webhamster Henry
Cheesy shrimp. Yum!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/9/16 10:00am Doug Schulkind:

Has there ever been a bad time with bongos?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/9/16 10:00am βrian:

On the other hand, that's more for the rest of us. Pity the caper pickers. Whoever thought to pick and pickle those little flower buds was truly inspired. Or truly, hungry, maybe.
Avatar Fri. 12/9/16 10:00am chromaphone:

I helped interview a shrimper who worked in the FL panhandle a few months before the BP oil spill and he said it was a crime that most Americans unknowingly only eat imported shrimp because our native shrimp tastes so incredible. Sadly I don't think I had any while I was down there but the crabcakes were through the roof good as I recall.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/9/16 10:02am Brian in UK:

I had a craving for laver bread yesterday. The only place here that I can find it is in Swansea Market.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/9/16 10:04am βrian:

My mantra for the day: "Shrimp braised in white wine, red pepper flakes, rosemary, and garlic."
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/9/16 10:04am Brian in UK:

Do you think that John Huston got Ole Mose from The Searchers from Moses Mason.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/9/16 10:06am Dave in Vermont:

I was feeling like better human while listening to that song, for sure, Doug.
  Fri. 12/9/16 10:07am Listener Gregory:

To be fair to Tom Dorsey, when he got religion, I believe he stopped performing "Second Hand Woman Blues" and the like.
  Fri. 12/9/16 10:08am Listener Gregory:

I came in in the middle of that shrimp set, and now I almost wish the show were over so I could listen to it in the archive! Almost.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/9/16 10:09am βrian:

There goes the colorful language!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/9/16 10:10am Webhamster Henry:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/9/16 10:10am annie:

the pub in west asheville makes a killer shrimp and grits
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/9/16 10:10am listener james from westwood:

Found out recently that shrimp and grits is a friend's favorite food!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/9/16 10:11am Doug Schulkind:

Why be fair, Listener Gregory?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/9/16 10:12am Doug Schulkind:

On Friday mornings for years, Nachum would end his show with these words: "And now the most calming words in radio: Doug is next."

Godspeed, Nachum Segal!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/9/16 10:12am βrian:

Will there be a prawn theme later, Doug? I'm heating the skillet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/9/16 10:13am Alex In Illinois:

@Listener Gregory: Is this "Tom Dorsey" the same person as "Tommy Dorsey" or "Thomas Dorsey", or yet another guy altogether?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/9/16 10:13am Brian in UK:

Doug could you do a mixed selection of crevettes and cravats.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/9/16 10:14am βrian:

On the other hand, Gary Larson noted,
"Beware of Doug"
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/9/16 10:14am Sam Segal:

Season's greetings, Doug and all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/9/16 10:14am Doug Schulkind:

Same guy, Alex. The Rev. Thomas A. Dorsey was "Georgia Tom."
  Fri. 12/9/16 10:15am Listener Gregory:

@Alex in IL. They could well be the same person. Blues record labels (and their re-issuers) were not the most fastidious people in the world when it came to names.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/9/16 10:17am Little Danny:

G'morning Doug and all from a foggy desert
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/9/16 10:17am Brian in UK:

Talking bluegrass, saw Bobby Gillespie at a Ralph Stanley gig. I know why not, just never noticed any bluegrass influences in Primal Screams' music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/9/16 10:17am Doug Schulkind:

@Alex
Tommy Dorsey was a different person.
  Fri. 12/9/16 10:17am Listener Gregory:

Since no one asked, let me also reveal that the blues pianists Speckled Red and Piano Red were brothers, but their last names were not Red.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/9/16 10:18am Alex In Illinois:

But "Tommy" Dorsey was Thomas Francis Dorsey, the trombonist and "Thomas" Dorsey was Thomas Andrew Dorsey the Gospel composer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/9/16 10:19am Doug Schulkind:

Rise and shine, Foggy Danny!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/9/16 10:20am βrian:

Here's the nerd's take on the entity, "Tommy Dorsey"
viaf.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/9/16 10:21am Jeff Golick:

What're we looking at there, @βrian?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/9/16 10:23am Little Danny:

@Brian in the UK: amazing sighting
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/9/16 10:24am βrian:

So definitely not the same Dorsey.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/9/16 10:24am Brian in UK:

I love harmony.
  Fri. 12/9/16 10:27am Listener Gregory:

@Alex Good point about the trombonist. However, there is probably a record by the other Dorsey that is labeled "Tommy Dorsey" somewhere.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/9/16 10:29am Artie Haywire:

The old OCLC, at little dry, but it does aim to be definitive.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/9/16 10:30am Doug Schulkind:

My father remembers seeing a young singer named Sinatra perform with the Dorsey Orchestra in Brooklyn. Sinatra was "the boy singer" with the orchestra.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/9/16 10:31am Brian in UK:

Guess Miller Brothers had heard Mystery Train.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/9/16 10:32am Uncle Michael:

This is a better version of "Bob" than I've heard before.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/9/16 10:32am burke:

Not Bob Wills, but "Bob" by Willis Bros?
Avatar Fri. 12/9/16 10:32am ndbob:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/9/16 10:39am Doug Schulkind:

This Gambler's Blues sounds a lot like St. James Infirmary.

No doubt part of the St. James Infirmary galaxy of song!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/9/16 10:40am Jeff Golick:

Yah, @Doug. I also half-expected Cab Calloway to come in....
Avatar Fri. 12/9/16 10:40am chromaphone:

I just looked at the playlist to see if this was St James Infirmary :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/9/16 10:41am Brian Brothers in UK:

Hospitals in the northern half of UK are often called infirmaries.
Fri. 12/9/16 10:41am Rob in NO:

Hey Doug! Yes, Gambler's Blues & SJI are closely linked (that is, kinda the same song). Jimmie Rodgers version is an example.

IIRC there's some shared DNA between SJ's I and the Unfortunate Rake group of songs, but better folk folks than I am can verify/debunk.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/9/16 10:42am listener james from westwood:

My college's health component used to be called the infirmary, but it's likely called the health center or something similarly sleek and antiseptic now.

My college's main dining room was called the "refectory," which I always found to be a little too close to "infirmary."
Avatar Fri. 12/9/16 10:45am chromaphone:

Hi there Doug
Avatar Fri. 12/9/16 10:45am glenn:

Doug, I have two versions by Kenton -- I think this one, plus one titled SJI from a live album, from the early 70s.

mauri Hello mauri. What was that incident at Imatra about?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/9/16 10:48am Doug Schulkind:

Don't all mob mauri or we'd be mauri'd to the mob!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/9/16 10:50am Doug Schulkind:

This Paul Gonsalves track always makes me think of Gato's soundtrack for Last Tango in Paris.

Jeff, goes without saying. Never set foot inside either.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/9/16 10:52am Doug Schulkind:

@Listener Gregory
Nice ears. Gonsalves was sliding between notes in Hodges' style. Of course, he played with Hodges in the Ellington sax section for many years!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/9/16 10:53am Doug Schulkind:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/9/16 11:35am Alex In Illinois:

@glenn: what do you mean by "watch"? What actions do you expect us to do? A professor has started a site dedicated to fighting the "fake news" sites, and finally mainstream news is waking up to the existence of fake news sites and beginning to comprehend the idea that maybe truth is more important than "balance". Organizations that oppose what Republicans stand for are receiving record amounts in donations. Here in Illinois, we just passed a environmental legislation to fight Global Warming.

Global Warming is a lie put about by swimsuit manufacturers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/9/16 11:39am Doug Schulkind:

Fake news has been around for ages in the US. Except in the 1960s, for instance, it was the government producing the propaganda. Remember COINTELPRO? Now it is us, the American People, who are fooling ourselves. Aldous Huxley anticipated this, no.
  Fri. 12/9/16 11:41am Dean:

The USG has since its founding been operated by high school bullies, nerds, self-righteous ideologues, jocks, and other misfits. There is no solution. It will always be so. We "the people" have to tend to our own critical faculties and our own demands if we want our government to instill pride. The gov't isn't there to do it for us. Respecting fake news, the solutions are simple: learn to think and read at the same time, exercise high degrees of skepticism (and curiosity!) on the one hand while acknowledging, on the other hand, that some kinds of evidence are superior to others.
  Fri. 12/9/16 11:41am Dean:

Put another way, fuck leadership. Level that fucking hierarchy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/9/16 11:42am Jeff Golick:

The Pizzagate thing is frightening as hell, but it's a freak side show, a wart on a body that now has late-stage cancer growing within. The fact that the US election was likely (certainly?) affected by a foreign power doesn't seem to be leading the news cycle, for example. The only thing I can take solace in now is the fact that millions more voted for the other candidate.

Thinking, reading, @Dean? That's not really Americans' strong suit right there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/9/16 11:43am Brian Brothers in UK:

The OED word(s) of the year is post-truth.
The concept of post-truth has been in existence for the past decade, but Oxford Dictionaries has seen a spike in frequency this year in the context of the EU referendum in the United Kingdom and the presidential election in the United States. It has also become associated with a particular noun, in the phrase post-truth politics.

Post-truth has gone from being a peripheral term to being a mainstay in political commentary, now often being used by major publications without the need for clarification or definition in their headlines.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/9/16 11:44am Alex In Illinois:

@Dean: agreed, but doesn't the list "high school bullies, nerds, self-righteous ideologues, jocks, and other misfits" include just about everyone? Okay, maybe not hipsters and fashionistas. Frankly, I think nerds are way too under-represented.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/9/16 11:45am βrian:

Hence, the effort to stifle education, generally. The Republicants don't *like* critical thinkers. They're trouble.

@Alex: The list doesn't include everyone. It includes the tails of the bell curve. Qua citizens, most of us are just ordinary doofuses, and we tend not to cultivate particularly severe ambitions. (I suppose we all want to "pursue happiness," whatever.)

Plenty of nerds in USG, albeit maybe not among the elected. But among the appointed, consider the intelligence community? Economic advisers? SCOTUS?
