Yes folks the world is turning to the right. Yes, Austria was a near miss recently. France is up for grabs. Germany well, who can take in one million refugees with no reaction. Of course America with its lack of global vision (current friends excluded).
And the whole year topped and tailed by Bowie and Cohen funeral directors to the stars.

From today's New York Times:

WASHINGTON — President-elect Donald J. Trump, who campaigned against the corrupt power of special interests, is filling his transition team with some of the very sort of people who he has complained have too much clout in Washington: corporate consultants and lobbyists.

Mr. Trump was swept to power in large part by white working-class voters who responded to his vow to restore the voices of forgotten people, ones drowned out by big business and Wall Street. But in his transition to power, some of the most prominent voices will be those of advisers who come from the same industries for which they are being asked to help set the regulatory groundwork.

Do I smell a rat?

Avatar Fri. 11/11/16 10:09am Doug Schulkind:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 11/11/16 10:10am Artie Haywire:

McCrory is toast. We'll need to wait for the wheels to turn, but the present vote margin should be sufficient to oust him from Raleigh. Small victories.

Avatar Fri. 11/11/16 10:18am Alex In Illinois:

@Artie Haywire: It is sort of a type of political constipation? I mean you know it's on it's way out, but just taking longer than it should.

So Clinton got more votes and lost. Is that right? No proportional representation.
Avatar Fri. 11/11/16 10:23am Doug Schulkind:

@Flash Strap
Always wise to buck up on one's knowledge.

@Brian in UK
Proportional? What are you, a Commie?

Avatar Fri. 11/11/16 10:25am βrian:

We're both, apparently. But not that kind of red.
  Fri. 11/11/16 10:25am Dean:

Watch it with the "red," @Brian in UK. I don't think it means (here in the US in our present circumstance) what you think it means.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 11/11/16 10:26am Brian in UK:

Why is it the woman has to have a different wardrobe for each occasion but the man can wear the same dull suit and tie every time.

@Dean ironically Labour here is red and Conservatives blue. Go figure.
  Fri. 11/11/16 10:27am Dean:

Great minds, @βrian, as they say.

The electoral college is dysfunctional, but it is a vestige of our federalist founding.

@Brian in UK: Yeah, well, you guys drive on the wrong side of the road, too.
Avatar Fri. 11/11/16 10:28am βrian:

The University of Wisconsin's color is a weird kind of red. I've never liked it.
Avatar Fri. 11/11/16 10:28am Doug Schulkind:

I propose the UK switch to the right side, and that the US switches to Celsius and the metric system. It would be a great step toward world unity.
  Fri. 11/11/16 10:32am Dean:

The Obamanable Snowman would have voted...?
  Fri. 11/11/16 10:33am Dean:

Might as well switch to Celsius here. It's getting warmer, anyway.

Avatar Fri. 11/11/16 10:34am ndbob:

@Doug it would be extremely difficult to get rid of the Electoral College - it would require a constitutional amendment - and the states that benefit the most from that are unlikely to support it
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 11/11/16 10:36am Brian in UK:

@βrian for crying out gently we have just voted to leave the EU, at least the 52% who bothered. So changing the side of the road is beyond the pale.

We might be changing our electorial boundaries to much consternation.

Yes, exactly, Doug, when the...enthusiasm...is not yuuuuuge.
Avatar Fri. 11/11/16 10:41am ndbob:

@Doug I have mixed feelings about it - I've never supported abolishing it - now I'm less sure about that - but it won't happen - the two Senators per state also over represents small states and that can't be changed
Avatar Fri. 11/11/16 10:41am Alex In Illinois:

Did anyone ever see that edition of Night Music with David Sanborn when Carla Bley was the guest, and they claimed that she had a daughter and he had a son who were in a band together? A band then played that included a guy who looked like a younger Dave Sanborn and a young woman who looked like a shorter Carla Bley. I still am not sure if that was for real.

Let me remind you young 'uns how unbelievable it was that Reagan got elected - twice - and that Bush pere et fils got elected - twice. And Clinton got in with a healthy boost of vote sucking from Mr. Perot.
Avatar Fri. 11/11/16 10:43am Doug Schulkind:

@Alex in Ill
I devoured all of those Night Music shows. (Produced so wonderfully by Hal Willner.) But I don't remember that Carla Bley exchange. Of course, I don't remember what I had for breakfast...

Agnew was Nixon's insurance, (Quayle was G HW Bush's) so you know there's a path forward!

As pointed out it is Kurt Vonneguts bday that being said I guess saying "So it goes" might be appropriate in a few different ways depending on where you stand.

  Fri. 11/11/16 10:50am Dean:

It was Bley with Bootsy Collins, Steve Swallow, Allen Toussaint, and Karen Mantler's band. Mantler is Bley's daughter. Not sure who Sanborn's kid is.
Avatar Fri. 11/11/16 10:50am Doug Schulkind:

Give the Drummer Radio has a program emanating from Marathon, Texas! The Long Way Home with Kris Holmes. Tuesday nights, 10-midnight (ET).
  Fri. 11/11/16 10:52am Dean:

Sure enough, Sanborn has a bass player son, Jonathan, who has played with Mantler.
  Fri. 11/11/16 10:53am Dean:

And Eric Mingus, too.
Avatar Fri. 11/11/16 10:53am βrian:

So that would be Ambassador Kris Holmes, then.

Neau, never been.
Avatar Fri. 11/11/16 11:01am Alex In Illinois:

if you had seen that performance of what might have been a band including Jonathan Sanborn and Karen Mantler, you might understand my hesitation. Also, at the time, I did not know that Sanborn was born in 1945 because he always looks younger than his actual age. So I did not know that he was old enough to have a son that old.

Avatar Fri. 11/11/16 11:29am Doug Schulkind:

Mr. Dobertstein, when he would be working with one particular section of the orchestra, would tell the rest of us to "finger our parts" silently while that section rehearsed.

Finger our parts.

High school students.

Finger our parts, he said.

We used to have a Tech Drawing teacher with a bit of a speech impediment, he would say 'schit down boysch and pass the paper round'. Funny to us juveniles from Juneau.
  Fri. 11/11/16 11:31am Dean:

"Finger our parts" reminds me of a joke about a faux-band leader, but I'm not sure I'm up to telling it.
