Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

So here at the office, there is a meeting room set up with video live coverage of the parade. There are a few people in there now, sitting at the tables doing their work on their laptops.

The plumbers' union dyed the Chicago River blue this morning. The Chicago River used to be toxic, but about 10 years ago its status was upgraded to "polluted".

Retiring these next two songs...forever.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 11/4/16 12:12pm Uncle Michael:

Chicago for three hours, Matt. Like the opening?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 11/4/16 12:13pm listener jeff:

I got to go to Wrigley in 1994. Three day games. Caught a batting practice home run. Harry Caray's first game back after an illness. Ryne Sandberg inducted into the walk of fame. Was on national TV dancing to the horn band in left field. And two Dead shows at Soldier Field in the evening. A weekend I will never forget!

The top of the show was cool. Whenever I hear "Jump", I think Cubs. '84 was a heartbreaker of a year but it's part of what led me on this path.

  Fri. 11/4/16 12:33pm Marie:

Hey UM, thanks for this! I live in Chicago and grew up here (but moving to NYC soon!) and I was a hardcore cubs fan from about age 4 or 5 until they traded Bill Matlock; when I saw them make yet another decision based on money not baseball. Then they were bought by the Tribune company that just treated them like another aspect of their portfolio--no need to invest in them they were making enough $ with cable deals and beer sales. So I am no longer a fan but I am very happy for the fans and the city. Your tribute is great!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 11/4/16 12:33pm Uncle Michael:

Thanks, Marie!

Trip to Chicago likely for 2019, for a copy editors' conference. Very much looking forward to it as my first visit was all too brief and plagued with meetings.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 11/4/16 12:36pm Uncle Michael:

What time of year is the conference? And are the Chicago Elements of Style going to be under siege?
Avatar    Fri. 11/4/16 12:38pm Alex In Illinois:

My dad was a copyeditor for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. But he also did a lot of "stringer" work.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 11/4/16 1:21pm Parq:

I'm recovered...physically. I was up till two...then up at six.
Avatar    Fri. 11/4/16 1:47pm JP from KC:

Ugh. I can't imagine. I had a fun time trying to strongly insinuate to my boss that I'd probably have to call in sick on Thursday.
  Fri. 11/4/16 1:53pm Dean:

Week ending Feb. 2, 1967, comes closest, with a little adjustment of the order.

That's the book I've got, Dean.
  Fri. 11/4/16 1:57pm Dean:

Let's see: I was wrapping up second grade with Mrs. Jenkins. Fast forward to the mid-to-late-'90s, I'm on my undergrad college's alumni board at an event where new members introduce themselves. One announces, "I'm Barbara Jenkins, and I was Dean's second grade teacher." No kidding.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 11/4/16 1:58pm Uncle Michael:

JP, I told my boss that win or lose, I'd be useless on Thursday...and I was.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 11/4/16 1:59pm Uncle Michael:

Dean, that's great!
