Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

Cubbie fans: If you haven't read a book called Bleachers, you need to.
Avatar Fri. 10/21/16 12:14pm Alex In Illinois:

That Beagle number was enjoyable. I am glad it did not sound too much like a cross between the Beatles and the Eagles.

Josie and the Pussycats? Or was that the Jackson 5? Hi :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 10/21/16 12:55pm Parq:

Dig it. Missus Parq and I have been making our way thru the first two seasons of Scooby as a coping mechanism.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 10/21/16 12:55pm coelacanth:

i never knew josie & the pussycats was an actual group. i knew about the cartoon, but in 1970 i had already discovered the 'stones and steppenwolf...
Avatar Fri. 10/21/16 12:57pm hyde:

i have come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 10/21/16 12:59pm coelacanth:

choon bubblegum motherfucker!
...i chewed a lot of bazooka, but never learned how to blow a bubble.
- i did like sugar sugar.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 10/21/16 1:00pm Uncle Michael:

Chrome! Hyde!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 10/21/16 1:00pm coelacanth:

nice guitar in this
Avatar Fri. 10/21/16 1:01pm hyde:

i was more of a bubble yum kid
Avatar Fri. 10/21/16 1:02pm Sweet Corn Lizzie:

I feel there are some similarities between bubblegum and power pop. Maybe I just want my favorite bubblegum songs to be covered as power pop.
Avatar Fri. 10/21/16 1:02pm chromaphone:

Maybe you could do a whole show of songs that rip off Jackson 5 riffs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 10/21/16 1:02pm coelacanth:

(the groovie goolies that is)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 10/21/16 1:02pm Uncle Michael:

Lizzie...we're going there later!
Avatar Fri. 10/21/16 1:05pm hyde:

i used to love that Globetrotters cartoon
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 10/21/16 1:05pm coelacanth:

rest in peace Meadowlark Lemon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 10/21/16 1:06pm SeanG:

Bubblegum music is the naked truth! tis a great book.
Avatar Fri. 10/21/16 1:06pm chromaphone:

I know I loved the Globetrotters cartoon but I can't remember it hardly at all. I associate it with the Jackson 5 cartoon for some reason.
Avatar Fri. 10/21/16 1:07pm hyde:

i also went to see the Meadowlark Lemon/Curly Neal Globetrotters live. Spoiler: they won.

my first movie memory is seeing a Lancelot Link short before Zebra in the Kitchen (also a Pink Panther cartoon and a travelogue about the Rio Grande)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 10/21/16 1:09pm coelacanth:

oh no...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 10/21/16 1:09pm annie:

woowoo gaygoo
Avatar Fri. 10/21/16 1:11pm Sweet Corn Lizzie:

I'm too old to know about any of these TV shows but god knows such things were always around - "Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka Dot Bikini" etc.
I'm letting the sun shine in my heart, right now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 10/21/16 1:11pm coelacanth:

hahaha - when i was little i thought pebbles was singing "mothers never lose and fathers never win". (because of the events of the program.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 10/21/16 1:13pm coelacanth:

i like frente but i never heard that. it's a lot better than the other non-flintstones version i've heard.
Avatar Fri. 10/21/16 1:15pm chromaphone:

This is pretty cool, but the original version was great. Another theme that is running through much of this show is songs with key modulations.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 10/21/16 1:18pm annie:

i really had no stomach for those newer children's shows. i was a little racals/our gang fan.
Avatar Fri. 10/21/16 1:18pm still b/p:

In the episode when Pebbles and Bam Bam got famous with the song, it turned out to be one of those "all just a dream" deals...Fred's nap dream.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 10/21/16 1:19pm melinda:

@hyde: I saw those Globetrotters, too. Meadowlark Lemon, what a name.
Avatar Fri. 10/21/16 1:20pm Rich in Washington:

i remember getting this comp back in the day. Sadly succumbed to the great music purge/scourge of ought-five.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 10/21/16 1:21pm coelacanth:

(never heard of these.)
Avatar Fri. 10/21/16 1:22pm Jeff Golick:

Sadly, I think Johnny Whitaker is my spirit animal.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 10/21/16 1:22pm Uncle Michael:

Hah!
Avatar Fri. 10/21/16 1:25pm chromaphone:

I watched a really interesting interview with the Krofts like 10 years ago at the Museum of TV and Radio. They said all their shows were influenced by some horrible hurricane that they experienced in Rhode Island as children.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 10/21/16 1:26pm coelacanth:

annie i agree. i was very cynical about tv in general. i knew the commercials were lying and thought the new cartoons were not funny and therefore what's the point?
the older ones with personified animals were generally much better.
i did enjoy some silliness though, like sitcoms.
Avatar Fri. 10/21/16 1:26pm Sweet Corn Lizzie:

I noticed all the key changes too.
Don't forget the Dickies version of Tra la la!
Avatar Fri. 10/21/16 1:27pm hyde:

uh oh, Chongo!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 10/21/16 1:28pm doctorjazz:

Can never have to many lalalala's
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 10/21/16 1:28pm coelacanth:

Dickies also did gigantor!
Avatar Fri. 10/21/16 1:28pm hyde:

@chrome that was the '38 hurricane, i imagine. my parents lived in Providence during that one.
Avatar Fri. 10/21/16 1:29pm Sweet Corn Lizzie:

LOVE the Dickies! Thank you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 10/21/16 1:29pm coelacanth:

DICKIES!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 10/21/16 1:29pm doctorjazz:

Bring on the lalalalas
Avatar Fri. 10/21/16 1:30pm northguineahills:

I remember when this Saturday Morning comp was out in the record stores...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 10/21/16 1:31pm coelacanth:

i love Liz Phair too, at least her earlier stuff; but this beats the hell outa that!
Avatar Fri. 10/21/16 1:31pm Sweet Corn Lizzie:

coelacanth, I didn't even like the old TV cartoons. I thought the Flintstones were stupid and hated all Hanna/Barbera animation. When I found out the Flintstones were based on the Honeymooners it all made sense.
Who else watched Fractured Flickers?
Avatar Fri. 10/21/16 1:31pm Alex In Illinois:

Do they still have Saturday Morning Children's shows? The last ones I watched were Pee Wee's Playhouse and The Mental Misadventures of Ed Grimley.
Avatar Fri. 10/21/16 1:33pm northguineahills:

Yep, there are still Saturday Morning Children shows. Couldn't name them. My sister-law-keeps the Disney channel on 24/7 and she doesn't even have children (and she's a few years north of 30).
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 10/21/16 1:34pm Goyim in the AM:

Friends was one of the two themes for Sigmund and the Sea Monsters.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 10/21/16 1:35pm coelacanth:

right Lizzie. we watched the flintstones and the jetsons out of boredom, and i don't think it helped much!
...the warner bros. cartoons ruled though!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 10/21/16 1:37pm Goyim in the AM:

Johnny Whitaker sang Friends, anonymous studioids sang the other theme. Whitaker couldn't carry a tune in a bucket.
Avatar Fri. 10/21/16 1:37pm still b/p:

We couldn't watch any of the Saturday cartoons when I was very young, then we were allowed some ration -- an hour or something -- then I think the other much younger siblings, in the standard arc of relaxed conditions in a large family, eventually were watching the hell out of that shit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 10/21/16 1:38pm Uncle Michael:

Ah, thanks Goyim.
Avatar Fri. 10/21/16 1:38pm chromaphone:

How catchy is this?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 10/21/16 1:40pm doctorjazz:

Question Mark? Wow!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 10/21/16 1:41pm Uncle Michael:

maybe using Joey Levine's "serious" band is cheating.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 10/21/16 1:42pm annie:

yeah, teevee got real simplistic starting in scoobydoo's time. that was when i lost interest. the flintstones were ok,too, just not really funny.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 10/21/16 1:47pm coelacanth:

does anyone else remember the tv ads that suggested good things without an ulterior motive? one was "it's nice to share". the song went:
"aww, that's the way it is - truly-uly-uly is..."
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 10/21/16 1:48pm Uncle Michael:

What were they selling?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 10/21/16 1:49pm coelacanth:

haha
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 10/21/16 1:51pm coelacanth:

- another showed a man dressed in traditional native american clothing walking through natural settings then getting to a street. as he's standing there a car speeds past with some party animals in it and they throw a bag of trash out the window which lands by his feet.
then a tear rolls down his cheek.

I keep wanting to sing "My Baby Loves Love" with this Abba track.
Avatar Fri. 10/21/16 1:54pm Sweet Corn Lizzie:

I remember the crying Indian but not any music with it
Avatar Fri. 10/21/16 1:54pm Rich in Washington:

@ceolacanth: That Native American - Chief Iron Eyes Cody - was no Native American. He was an Italian actor of Sicilian extraction.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 10/21/16 1:56pm coelacanth:

well, that happens. that's why i didn't call him a native american!
Avatar Fri. 10/21/16 1:56pm Rich in Washington:

He wasn't a chief, either. That was my fault. I've always thought that's what he was called - but I was wrong.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 10/21/16 1:57pm coelacanth:

"Light of Love" by t rex is the first song i think of when you say "bubblegum-glam"
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 10/21/16 1:59pm Uncle Michael:

Ah, PSAs produced by the Ad Council. I feel ya now.
Avatar Fri. 10/21/16 1:59pm Rich in Washington:

I recently told my Missus that Cody wasn't really an Indian and that Coven, who did One Tin Soldier, were Satanists, and had to go stand in the mansplaining corner. I am forbidden from ever telling disturbing factoids about our childhood memories.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 10/21/16 2:00pm Uncle Michael:

Heh
Avatar Fri. 10/21/16 2:00pm Guido from Cologne:

Hello Michael!
Avatar Fri. 10/21/16 2:01pm Rich in Washington:

UM, our station's news director recently retired and she had hoarded years and years of Ad Council CDs in her office. So, when she finally retired, we played as many of them as possible, many at the same time, over the air in tribute to her.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 10/21/16 2:01pm Uncle Michael:

Guido! Rich!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 10/21/16 2:01pm melinda:

@Rich: I like trivia like that. Especially the part about Coven being satanists, didn't know that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 10/21/16 2:01pm coelacanth:

haha!
i was always skeptical so those things don't surprise me.
-i'm probably more fun now than i was as a child.

I think Iron Eyes Cody (Tony Corti) got to play a chief in a few of the movies he was in.

I am also forbidden from blurting out when famous character actor or voiceover artist is in a movie. These are growth moments for me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 10/21/16 2:07pm Uncle Michael:

I impress by walking through the living room and rattling off the names of the non-starring actors on-screen. Mileaege varies.

Avatar Fri. 10/21/16 2:09pm Rich in Washington:

Me too, coelacanth. So much of it is pointless trivia that no one but me cares about.

@Rich: Not allowed to identify the voice over actor? That's a tough one. There has to be a way to regain that right--at least for limited periods.

Avatar Fri. 10/21/16 2:33pm Rich in Washington:

@melinda. I blame it on my mom. It seems like I am magnetically drawn to learning celebrity's scandalous behavior. It IS weird though that most classic cartoon voice actors seemed to be terrible parents.

Mon. 10/24/16 2:14pm Hate the devil, children, frowners never win:

Religiously indoctrinated cartoon infants Pebbles & Bamm Bamm covered songwriter Stuart Hamblin's chipmunked family-sung 1955 hit in the September 17, 1965 Flintstones episode, “No Biz Like Show Biz.” In 1934 Hamblin was American Decca's first artist after the label's war split from British Decca. A popular LA deejay, singing cowboy Hamblin is attributed with propelling Billy Graham's crusades, started in 1947, to critical mass in 1949 by permitting him to come on his show - because Hamblin's father was a minister. Hard drinking, hard living Stuart Hamblin's Christian conversion by Billy Graham followed. Hamblin ran against Eisenhower as Temperance movement presidential candidate. Recording artists Rebecca Page sang as Pebbles and her mom Ricky as Bamm Bamm. They were managed by dad/husband/record producer/songwriter George Motola.
