Good morning Nate. Technical difficulties are part of the WFMU experience
Avatar 6:05am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Yeah - that CD player's been skipping for @ least - 18 hours?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:07am
Nate K.:

Sorry about that gang. Technical problems beyond my control. I can roll with two CD players, though!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:07am
Nate K.:

Oh, and good morning, folks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:10am
Sem Chumbo:

Hiya, Nate, RRN63, fred. Good morning.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:12am
fred:

That Vera Ward Hall track was beautiful
Avatar 6:12am
Jay/London:

good morning all from London
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:20am
Sem Chumbo:

A+ spins, Nate. Lovin' these.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:26am
Nate K.:

I agree, Fred. I heard it recently and was immediately taken and just had to play it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:32am
fred:

@Nate: I guess you know about Association for Cultural Equity: www.culturalequity.org
It's a treasure trove
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:45am
Sem Chumbo:

I find it interesting that Lizzy Mercier Descioux preceded Paul Simon by more than two years with music inspired by Soweto/South African genres.
  6:48am
Peter:

awesome tunes this morning.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:50am
Nate K.:

@Sem and is largely unknown comparatively. I don't know the full story of the recording, but I'm going to guess her approach was probably a bit more organic, too (as much as that kind of fusion can be).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:50am
Nate K.:

@Peter, thanks my man.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:53am
fred:

Lizzy Mercier Descioux had a huge hit in France in the 80's. Like annoyingly everywhere hit
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:58am
Nate K.:

@Fred, she basically writes pop songs, so that's not too surprising to hear.

The best too hungover too sleep music ever! Fuck it. Let's go to the beach. .....

Vintage SE Asian riffing on 'Iron Man' ?! I think I might favor this station just slightly...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:15am
fred:

@RRN63: I loved it too
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:56am
fred:

Wow, an Elvis Presley track I kinda like! No easy feat there, Nate
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:57am
Sem Chumbo:

Long story short: was with the start-up team for a new radio station in a town where there had been just one for fifty years. After a few delays, on the air August 16, 1977.
And not an Elvis record in the library.
Avatar 7:59am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I think Elvis was great & important, if increasingly f-d up - & the trick is catching him being authentic & not another Elvis Impersonator. Which we all are.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:00am
fred:

@Sem: Great way to stand out, a refuge for all people who got sick of the endless tributes
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:00am
Nate K.:

Wow, Sem. Great story. Love it. Brutal for that station though.
Avatar 8:01am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

'When Elvis died, everyone was pressing me for a quote. Well - I'll give it to you now. Elvis died when he went into the army.' - Lennon
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:02am
Nate K.:

@Revo, yes, I completely agree. There's an authentic, inspired artist in there amidst the the bloated myth. You just have to find him.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:02am
fred:

Though nothing can come close to what happened when Umm Kulthum died. I was 3 at the time, it's one of my earliest memories
Avatar 8:02am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Oh Sem - I thot you were saying *you* don't own any Elvis. Nevermind all that then...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:04am
Sem Chumbo:

@Nate: you'd think it was a disaster for us. But the creative solution was to say " We don't have an of his music here, if you have a favourite Elvis record, come down to the station. We'll put you on the air, and play it, and you can share your best memory of the King."
Wall to wall Elvis, all day long.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:07am
Sem Chumbo:

@fred: wow re: Umm Kulthum. Just reading here wikithing entry.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:13am
fred:

@Sem: you should listen to Enta Omri someday. It's a classic
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:16am

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:17am

Will do, fred. Thanks for this fork in my musical education.
Avatar 8:37am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...see - I told you Elvis had good tracks...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:37am
fred:

That's a weird side of Sinatra, I doubt Glen Jones has played this
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:39am
Nate K.:

I'd go so far as to say this is the weirdest side of Sinatra.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:44am
fred:

I actually like Sinatra. This confuses some people, but not as many as when I say I love Dolly Parton (over here, she's seen as a joke, proof that the French know nothing about music). Then again, I do wear cowboy boots
Avatar 8:45am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Same thing w/ Frankie, really. Not all of his stuff is his best.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:53am
Sem Chumbo:

Wonderful morning of music and talk, Nate. Glad to have been along, and to see/hear the Sunday stalwarts once again.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:56am

Another fine show Nate, thanks
