Black air? Just like, so they tell me, Pittsburgh. Even into the early 1970s, office workers here had to bring a second shirt to change into midday, because the first was soot-soiled by noon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 7/15/16 9:24am Brian in UK:

Terry Earl Taylor sounds a bit like Mike Cooper.
Avatar Fri. 7/15/16 9:26am Doug Schulkind:

This Alasdair Roberts tune has a new unofficial subtitle: PLUG BREXIT UP THE BUM

@Brian in UK
The fine Mr. Cooper may just be listening. I exchanged good words with him yesterday regarding a Zimbabwean track that played on the stream.

  Fri. 7/15/16 9:41am Paul Sherratt:

Brian, so much sun today that I managed to get the grass cut.

Doug, Hurley stayed with us, by accident ( aka Irish tour manager ) for four days and six hours, some years back. I still have this recurring nightmare ...
Avatar Fri. 7/15/16 9:42am Doug Schulkind:

The last six hours are always the toughest, Paul!
Avatar Fri. 7/15/16 9:43am Doug Schulkind:

Our next artist, Adam Carroll, is a Texan who I learned of from Paul Sherratt's late, great radio show.
Avatar Fri. 7/15/16 9:47am Doug Schulkind:

Another beloved artist Paul turned me onto, Mary Gauthier (another artist who stayed at Sherratt Castle), is coming up later in this set.
Avatar Fri. 7/15/16 9:49am Doug Schulkind:

Up next, is the stunning Iris DeMent, whose voice makes Paul's dog... irritable.
  Fri. 7/15/16 9:50am Paul Sherratt:

Doug, someone from Texas, I don't know who, sent me the Adam Carroll in a small parcel which included a couple of Caroline Herring albums. The kindness of strangers... Peggy Roberts has just sent a note crediting his dad with the artist that's emerged for the lucky few who know him.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 7/15/16 9:51am Brian in UK:

I wrote to Iris a while ago to see if see was coming to these shores. Never got a reply. Aw shucks.

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 7/15/16 9:53am Brian in UK:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 7/15/16 9:53am listener james from westwood:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 7/15/16 9:54am annie:

oh krickey i was ruined for gillian when i worked for a woman who played nothing BUT GW and Townes van zandt... talk about LOOONG working days
Avatar Fri. 7/15/16 9:54am Doug Schulkind:

@Paul
Yeah, you turned me onto Caroline Herring, too. Hey, tell Peggy Roberts she shouldn't settle for anything less than 51% credit.
Avatar Fri. 7/15/16 9:55am Doug Schulkind:

@listener james from westwood
Gillian almost made the cut for this set!
Avatar Fri. 7/15/16 9:56am Doug Schulkind:

As Mary would say, "Gauthier rhymes with gateway, y'all!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 7/15/16 9:56am annie:

i've always hoped iris would make an album with her mom.
Avatar Fri. 7/15/16 9:58am Doug Schulkind:

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 7/15/16 10:04am Brian in UK:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 7/15/16 10:05am mauri:

Avatar Fri. 7/15/16 10:05am Doug Schulkind:

@Michael
I am enjoying your past repast vicariously. Welcome aboard! Mary called one of her LPs Dixie Kitchen.

Apologies for that shocking turn of evens, friends. I was already weeping at the song. Now and I am scarlet with shame.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 7/15/16 10:06am Brian in UK:

mauri, chink. Bluddy mary any one?
  Fri. 7/15/16 10:06am Gary:

Well, I was loving this song, so it's nice to hear it from the beginning again ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 7/15/16 10:07am annie:

these echoing back-ups remind me of kate wolf
Avatar Fri. 7/15/16 10:07am Doug Schulkind:

Normally, I just let things be, but you can be sure I am going to edit out that horrible occurrence from the show archive. Please, everyone, forget that happened.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 7/15/16 10:07am Brian in UK:

This is my favourite period Lucinda, so much compassion.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 7/15/16 10:10am annie:

i never really listened to lucinda, really listened, until "World Without Tears", and was just blown away by her open-hearted singing, gut-wrneching reality
Avatar Fri. 7/15/16 10:15am Doug Schulkind:

OK, I've had a turn of mind. Now I won't edit that glitch out of the archive. It would be like me playing God or something. That makes me uncomfortable.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 7/15/16 10:15am Artie Haywire:

Good morning, Doug, Drummers!
It was 'Six Blocks Away' that first took me down. Highly relevant at moment of first listening. Oof.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 7/15/16 10:16am Uncle Michael:

I was out listening in the yard...are you telling me you put a round thing on a machine and it produced music?! Are you some sort of *wizard*? Are you Michael Cumella? Is this some sort of historic re-creation? Are we in Colonial Williamsburg? Is this the Bronze Age??
Avatar Fri. 7/15/16 10:16am Doug Schulkind:

Howdy, Artie Haywire!!

He sleeps all alone on Second Street
With a roof over his head and food to eat
But he can hardly make it day to day 'cause
Everything he wants is six blocks away, six blocks away

He's got a regular job and it pays the rent
In a donut shop on third and tenth
But he doesn't understand why she turned him away
He can hear her heart beat six blocks away, six blocks away

Six blocks away dirty old street
Six blocks away he can hear her heart beat
Six blocks away dirty old street
Six blocks away he can hear her heart beat, six blocks away

He walks real fast down the dirty street
He turns his eyes from the people he meets
It hurts so bad what can he say
He sends her a message six blocks away, six blocks away

Six blocks away dirty old street
Six blocks away he can hear her heart beat
Six blocks away dirty old street
Six blocks away he can hear her heart beat, six blocks away

Six blocks away
Six blocks away
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 7/15/16 10:16am Artie Haywire:

@Doug - Wear the mantle lightly, happily; for you are the God of your own archive. And rightly so.
Avatar Fri. 7/15/16 10:17am Mickey Mantle:

Someone ask for me?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 7/15/16 10:17am annie:

what s that tune doug? who wrote that?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 7/15/16 10:18am Brian in UK:

I was just humming Six Blocks. He is the son of God. The Life of Doug.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 7/15/16 10:18am Artie Haywire:

@annie - that's Lucinda
  Fri. 7/15/16 10:18am Lore:

It's been way too long since I've spun this Ra & Dickerson LP. Thanks for doing the honors, Doug.
Avatar Fri. 7/15/16 10:19am Doug Schulkind:

The honor is mine, Lore.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 7/15/16 10:19am Brian in UK:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 7/15/16 10:19am annie:

i thought so, thanks
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 7/15/16 10:21am Brian in UK:

Gurf Morlix is a vital part of Lucinda's work at this time as player and producer/arranger.
  Fri. 7/15/16 10:22am Paul Sherratt:

>> by her open-hearted singing, gut-wrneching reality. We were saying something similar the other day, annie, and that was just by hearing her helping out for a few songs on Terry Allen's marvellous ' Human Remains ' album
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 7/15/16 10:22am listener james from westwood:

Sun Ra's generally good editing music, but this collab is especially effective.
Avatar Fri. 7/15/16 10:23am Doug Schulkind:

"He Never Got Enough Love" from Sweet Old World makes me hurt.

@Brian in UK
I respect an artist's decision to change course and evolve, but I have always felt Lucinda's best work was done with Gurf onboard.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 7/15/16 10:24am annie:

i saw her here in asheville last year. bittersweet show..i was dating someone who easily have been one of her subjects, he was so wretchd and lonely, i loved him with all my heart.
Avatar Fri. 7/15/16 10:28am Doug Schulkind:

@listener james
Good editing music. Is that music that music that distracts or doesn't? I have always had a hellish time writing to music, because my mind makes my ears listen. Maybe editing is different?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 7/15/16 10:30am annie:

I've missed most of a damn fine show, including the Dickerson/Sun Ra "Visions" track!

My record store story: I used to treat myself to Pasadena's Poo-Bah Records in its old location on Walnut Street on occasional weekends. Once when I arrived the familiar clerk at the register looked up and announced, "Here comes the guy who pays my salary." At the time I was single and sans kids. I don't expect I'll ever hear a similar remark. (Speaking of being single, today's my and wifey-poo's 16th angryversary! And speaking of record stores, we're heading tomorrow to Chicago. Jazz Record Mart, here I come!)

I can only have 90 minutes of HDT today, but I...willl...HAVE IT!

Anniversary 16 is traditionally the vinyl anniversary, yes?
Avatar Fri. 7/15/16 11:37am Doug Schulkind:

Happy Anniversary, Dean! And thanks for inspiring the spinning of the Sun Ra/Walt Dickerson. Sorry you missed it.
  Fri. 7/15/16 11:38am Dean:

GIVE THE DRUMMER RADIO PROGRAMMING ALERT...
Uncle Michael is up next with Hinky Dinky Time! It's a radio show that will tear you up inside. That's "tear" boo-hoo, not "tear" rip-to-shreds, silly!

Here's is the Hinky Dinky Playlistinky: wfmu.org...

So this is how the show ends. Thought it was a twelve hour show to catch up. Just kidding, nine hours would do.
Avatar Fri. 7/15/16 11:51am ndbob:

excellent show Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 7/15/16 11:52am mauri:

what a show. dying mp3s and broken backups. all that drama.
Avatar Fri. 7/15/16 11:53am Doug Schulkind:

@Brian in UK
What I wouldn't give to do this for another 9 hours. Unfortunately, I gotta dash to work right after the show.

@mauri
Just no broken backs, please. That would be a whole other order of drama.
  Fri. 7/15/16 11:54am Dean:

@Brian in UK: On the West Coast, alas.
Avatar Fri. 7/15/16 11:57am Doug Schulkind:

Hey, have I used this playlist GIF before? I found it in my unused GIFs folder, but I could swear I used it before. Good enough to use twice. Obviously.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 7/15/16 11:57am Brian in UK:

Dean Congrats on your anniversary, have a good trip.

Doug, well I liked the show. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
  Fri. 7/15/16 11:59am Dean:

Thanks, Brian.

Seems to me, Doug, you have used a GIF of somebody pounding a big bass drum, but maybe not this one?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 7/15/16 11:59am Uncle Michael:

Thanks Doug and welcome back!
Avatar Fri. 7/15/16 12:00pm Doug Schulkind:
