I play music that is old and that is new. Some of it is digital while some is analog. It is from many different countries; sometimes it is loud and at other times it is quiet.

Listener comments!

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 6/27/16 5:02pm fred:

I'm listening live! I'm really happy about that, though not as much about the ear infection that made it happen
Avatar Mon. 6/27/16 5:03pm Mayuko:

Ah! Happy you're tuning in live too, fred! Got some Okinawa stuff ready today, coincidentally.
  Mon. 6/27/16 5:06pm david:

It's good Okinawan-type weather today. This is good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 6/27/16 5:07pm fred:

Okinawa stuff! I'm all ear (singular because the left one just works even less than usual)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 6/27/16 5:14pm fred:

I went to an embarrassing show last month, with a French woman gushing about the great lakes in the Gobi desert in Tuva. Doesn't make sense? No it doesn't! Stop having French assholes making fun of fine musicians!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 6/27/16 5:16pm fred:

Wow! This Kenkichi Muraki is stunning!
Avatar Mon. 6/27/16 5:17pm Mayuko:

hello david! thank you for tuning in.
A pair of ears doesn't necessarily makes you a good listener anyway... One carefully listening ear is great!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 6/27/16 5:39pm fred:

I don't know whether it's the sun or the disrespect, but Okinawa and blues go well together
Avatar Mon. 6/27/16 5:39pm Mayuko:

yes Kenkichi Muraki is pretty amazing, all the songs in this compilation are pretty great and somehow come with that deep reverb which makes it kinda feel timeless almost. Give it a different feel from usual Enka music.
Avatar Mon. 6/27/16 5:43pm Mayuko:

Yah! Glad you said that. I definitely feel the same about Okinawa folk music and blues from the US. I think there's similar energy or strength to them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 6/27/16 5:45pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Hi, folks. I guess for better or for worse, there's a lot of American influence on Okinawan culture.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 6/27/16 5:48pm fred:

@Ken: I respectfully think you're way wrong about this
Avatar Mon. 6/27/16 5:52pm Mayuko:

Ken, yah, American base camps have had huge influence on Japanese pop music in general, and I've heard that 70% of the camps are located in that tiny island of Okinawa so hard to get away from it for younger generation, I suppose. In any case it's the only place in Japan where you can buy spam in any store, I heard. haha.
Avatar Mon. 6/27/16 5:53pm Mayuko:

So I guess it depends on what you mean by "culture".
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 6/27/16 5:54pm Webhamster Henry:

I took Isshin ryu karate with my son and would have much rather been listening to and playing Okinawan music - and so would he!
Avatar Mon. 6/27/16 5:57pm Mayuko:

Hello Webhamster Henry! I'm lazy so I'd just relax and listen to Okinawa music too - karate sounds good for you, though. Can you chop and break that tile thing?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 6/27/16 5:58pm fred:

Okinawan music has a definite beat to it. Totally unfakable
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 6/27/16 6:03pm coelacanth:

hi Mayuko and others
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 6/27/16 6:06pm Webhamster Henry:

It was repetitive and boring - they use these breakable blocks that they can put together again for the chop test, but that's a very small - negligible really - part of the training.
Avatar Mon. 6/27/16 6:17pm Mayuko:

Sorry, CD skipping :/
Avatar Mon. 6/27/16 6:18pm Mayuko:

Hi coelacanth! Thanks for tuning in!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 6/27/16 6:19pm fred:

Skipping CD proves it's real!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 6/27/16 6:21pm Webhamster Henry:

Mayuko! I just got my WFMU Play Vertigo Notebook in the mail today! Thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 6/27/16 6:23pm fred:

@Webhamster Henry: I'm so jealous
Avatar Mon. 6/27/16 6:24pm Mayuko:

Henry, I think you should listen to minimal music while chopping the blocks and put yourself into trance, that'd be fun. And I'm so glad you got my notebook!!! Thank you!!!!
  Mon. 6/27/16 6:31pm david:

Oh, wow. Now this is tropical paradise.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 6/27/16 6:32pm coelacanth:

i like the composition of that image; but i like it too because i've always been fascinated by datura.
a few years back, one volunteered in my garden. it was interesting. i let it be. it grew to about 6'tall. the smell was not sweet, but somehow intoxicating.
- a friend came by and told me what it was, and that there's a great deal of mysticism about it in some south american or mexican cultures. one belief was that if you fell asleep under a blooming datura you would not wake up. i tried it, just to see what actually would happen. i didn't die, as far as i know. i did have weird dreams, but maybe not weirder than usual.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 6/27/16 6:38pm fred:

I loved this last set. Totally ruled
Avatar Mon. 6/27/16 6:40pm Mayuko:

Datura really is fascinating, coelacanth!!! I didn't know those stories about it but it certainly has that uneasy feel to it. That's pretty incredible you didn't even plant it. The whole thing sounds like beginning of a novel or some story!
Avatar Mon. 6/27/16 6:40pm Mayuko:

I LOVED that you actually tried sleeping under them.
Avatar Mon. 6/27/16 6:42pm Mayuko:

Thanks fred, supposedly getting closer to Paraiso in this set. david, now it's more tropical in the usual sense!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 6/27/16 6:43pm coelacanth:

yeh, even before my friend identified it i regarded it with awe... both for it's beauty and for it's creepiness!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 6/27/16 6:43pm Webhamster Henry:

Oh we're long out of that Karate Dojo. If we chop anything, it's onions. We do take Japanese Calligraphy together, and my son takes Japanese language lessons. He's also writing/drawing/programming this visual novel, set in a Japanese apartment in 1991:

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 6/27/16 6:45pm fred:

This is beautiful!
Avatar Mon. 6/27/16 6:46pm Mayuko:

I'm incredibly bad at Japanese Calligraphy, it's embarrassing. Your son must be better than me seriously. I'll def take a look at what he's worked on. Set in a Japanese apartment in 1991 sounds like only one or two people can fit in there in the story!
Avatar Mon. 6/27/16 6:52pm Mayuko:

We've arrived in Paraiso and this is my last song for today - thank you all for listening!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 6/27/16 6:58pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Have a good week, Mayuko. Happy Fourth of July next Monday!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 6/27/16 6:59pm coelacanth:

Thanks Mayuko! that was Lovely!
ciao
Avatar Mon. 6/27/16 7:01pm Mayuko:
