Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

I have a former workmate, a Yorkshireman living in the US, who took himself off Facebook years ago bc he couldn't keep from getting keyed up and pulled into online rows, for whom I'm genuinely concerned right now. He could well stress himself into the hospital over this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 6/24/16 9:15am doctorjazz:

Have some personal problems resulting from the Brexit vote as well, man, this is the year voters defy the pundits (and common sense).
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 6/24/16 9:15am Andrew Waterloo:

I was in New Castle last week and the Sun was just brutal. We didn't talk about it.

Trying to look at the bright side: this might be a good time to order that fine handcrafted English bass guitar, at least until the luthiers have to burn their wood stocks for fuel. Morning, all. Trying to avoid any far right glee here in Austria, successful so far.

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 6/24/16 9:46am Uncle Michael:

Mike!

How was that experience?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/24/16 9:50am Mike East:

Well, from my end it was mostly just reading emails, typing things into a computer and purchasing things like bass strings, drum sticks, guitar picks and turntable cartridges...so not really much fun. One of my colleagues actually got to go to the gig. By all accounts a great day at the park, but I doubt he really cared much about the music.

Good catch Lewis. Corrected...thank you!
Avatar Fri. 6/24/16 10:01am still b/p:

Goo' morning. Don't think I recognized Hot Canary, but...well, it completes me. Regarding cartoon/life reference and integration and influence -- I was trying yesterday to figure out how succinctly I could describe Clyde Crashcup (and his Richard Haydn-mimicking voice) and his shtick to someone as an example of a character option they might try in stage performance.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/24/16 10:02am listener james from westwood:

I've always been interested in cartoon music, and the large amounts of Raymond Scott played on WFMU was attractive to me! Carl Stalling's soundtracks for Warners, bereft of Mel Blanc and other voices are on the Carl Stalling Project recordings. At MGM, Scott Bradley did admirable work. Then there's also the great Fleischer Brothers sound tracks. The idea of an almost free associative yet rigorously programmatic music is very appealing!

@Jeff Harvard Sq. used to have like 6 used bookstores, too. they're all pretty much gone, though Harvard Books still has used stuff. I was in the square one day after one of the big ones closed and they had just thrown a lot of the store contents into a huge dumpster and there was a frenzy of book addicts (like me) climbing into the thing and pawing through the discards.

No, @Jeff, I was serious. I now recall having heard the "Judas" story, but like so much it didn't stick with me. I recently heard an interview with ... somebody (again, didn't stick) ... regarding Newport (not Manchester). The interviewee tried to argue that the booing at Newport had nothing to do with Dylan's going electric. Rather, it had to do with an extreme delay in the band's appearance and a really short show, because the band had only rehearsed at moment's notice a few tunes. Or something to that effect.

*cue boring lecture about distinctions between pop and classical music being in themselves modern and not relevant in 18th music; playlist commenters rise as one to kill G in the A.*

I totally get your point -- mine is more about the weird phenomenon of Paganini the pop star and his ability to sell guitars and violins, UM. There are clear parallels!

I actually would send you that if I found it and remembered, because in your hands, it will get shared on your webcast.

Now if anyone here finds a concertina or a button accordion anywhere, it might be dangerous, so you must send it to me immediately.

Just jumping in to say it was nice to hear someone else play that band "Blue" on the radio. I didn't discover them until the 21st century through a Jimmy McCulloch connection. Did those RSO LPs ever see the light of day on CD? Anyway, very much enjoying the show.

It is bizarre to see the everyday objects from my childhood home on such display. There are also some some incredibly valuable items in there sitting with bids of $1. Extremely harrowing. Thank God I will be moving out of Internet range tomorrow when I get to Maine (unless our cabin has Wifi), so I won't obsess over this.

@Goyim in the AM
Thanks, mate! My mother was an artist (many of her pieces are included in the auction) and she and father amassed a significant collection.

thanks UM, huge show!
Avatar Fri. 6/24/16 2:58pm still b/p:

Hear hear! This show has been hours of entertainment!

Also, we've spoken of auctions and the Maine coast and proofreading. This involves all three:
a video for auction of very a high end property on the island Isleboro boasts of the region's early sun and says, “…that's because these islands are 300 miles farther east than any other point in the United States."
That's crazy wrong, unless I'm confused, it's bafflingly waaaaaay off. Even Doug will be farther east in Stonington; much of the NE United States is within 300 miles. I can't figure what angle of geography, distance or common sense got kerflugled. Among all the people involved, no one said, "Wait a minute..."
A little proofing, maybe, when you're pitching a many-million dollar product...?
Avatar Fri. 6/24/16 2:58pm Doug Schulkind:

Four losses in a row, and you're headed to rehab? It's a long season, Uncle Michael! Not six hours long, but pretty long.

You are my hero, Uncle M. I should take more vacations, just to hear you make such outsize brilliant radio.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/24/16 3:02pm listener james from westwood:

This archive is just 5:46:28 long when it BREXITS 90 seconds into Vanity Fare . . . .
which still tours - not with anyone on the hits, but their drummer who retired last year went back to 1972.
