This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

Avatar Thu. 6/23/16 7:10pm Flash Strap:

@Hyde: she's amazing for sure. I'll never forget the first time I saw her in anything, it was The Big Sleep. She stole the whole film for a few minutes

Avatar    Thu. 6/23/16 7:16pm hyde:

Avatar Thu. 6/23/16 7:33pm geezerette:

I see what you mean! Wow!
Avatar Thu. 6/23/16 7:37pm geezerette:

There was a cult called Arica. Some 70s thing. Cults were an industry.
Avatar Thu. 6/23/16 7:37pm geezerette:

Cue Siren.
Avatar Thu. 6/23/16 7:39pm Flash Strap:

I never heard of that! I wonder if cult and band are related

not that uncommon to the 1970s cult industry to have a record

I don't think so though
Avatar Thu. 6/23/16 7:40pm geezerette:

Good question!
Avatar Thu. 6/23/16 7:40pm ndbob:

good evening Flash Strap and explorers.
Avatar Thu. 6/23/16 7:42pm Flash Strap:

hmm i wonder if that's right. I hate when i get waylaid by a remake. happens a lot in surf as well
Avatar Thu. 6/23/16 7:43pm Flash Strap:

hello and welcome J–K
Avatar Thu. 6/23/16 7:45pm ndbob:

@Evan HMM actually not thinking here - the Jesters is a remake of the Diablos record
Avatar Thu. 6/23/16 7:45pm Flash Strap:

i haven't listened to this LP hardly at all, but this cut is killer
Avatar Thu. 6/23/16 7:46pm Flash Strap:

@bob: ah yes, i have that one as well
Avatar Thu. 6/23/16 7:49pm geezerette:

God,all the dipictions of needlessly tortured romance in 50s flicks & "adult" records.
Avatar Thu. 6/23/16 7:49pm geezerette:

...+bongos & booze!
Avatar Thu. 6/23/16 7:50pm Flash Strap:

Cowabunga RevRab and hyde!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/23/16 8:37pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...& one pet topic is the ways in which the common myth that there was nothing betwixt Elvis in the Army & The Beatles in America - is true - & is definitely *not* true. Surf is one of the more important cornerstones there - especially for the future of Rawk Guitar (ferinstance). Dick Dale was pushing amplifier volume & limitations w/ Fender on the West Coast - & Fender amps were the direct model for the Marshall amps in England that The Who would help pioneer - & the rest is HardRawk history...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/23/16 8:38pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...Surf & Drag (cars I mean) Culture has been sited as the earliest dropout DIY Alternative kulture in a lot of ways too...(&tc. &tc.)...
Avatar Thu. 6/23/16 8:42pm geezerette:

There were Beach Boys vs Beatles competitions an American radio early on.
Dick Dale lives in the Mojave desert & I think he's still touring!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 6/23/16 8:43pm melinda:

I read that he is still touring and with serious chronic pain and other health problems.
Avatar Thu. 6/23/16 8:46pm geezerette:

Yes melinda,he's had cancer. I think the music keeps him going.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/23/16 8:47pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

The BBoys v. Beatles dynamic is relevant to this day I think. I've thot about it long enuff that I concluded that the B.Boys emotional root tone is the Pre-Kennedy Assassination America - & The Beatles share in that w/ also a lot of the hope for a Revolutionary world beyond that. There is heavy Nostalgia as a them &/or tone in both bands.
I'm just old enuff that The Ventures had riffs that were important in teaching us guitar - like the yARdbiRds were.
Heard just a little Shadows from England - & they're like the British Ventures - very kewl rekkids that you never hear anywhere...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/23/16 8:47pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

(as a *themE...)
Avatar Thu. 6/23/16 8:50pm geezerette:

Rev Rab I was thinking about the Shadows!
Avatar    Thu. 6/23/16 8:52pm hyde:

word is in that bluegrass legend Ralph Stanley has died at 89 today. i think this guy was a real giant of american music.
Avatar Thu. 6/23/16 8:52pm geezerette:

Iconic!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/23/16 8:52pm JtotheK:

@hyde -- re: NBA Draft - have the Milwaukee Bucks picked yet?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/23/16 8:54pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

@hyde: O Death. A definitive voice.
Avatar Thu. 6/23/16 8:55pm Flash Strap:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/23/16 8:57pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

The Father of the Power Chord.
Avatar    Thu. 6/23/16 8:58pm hyde:

@JtotheK yeah, you took Thon Maker, at 10 who's a 7' 1" guy who was born in Sudan, moved to Australia and then to the States. He's really raw.
Avatar Thu. 6/23/16 8:58pm Flash Strap:

you know, I love joe meek, but next to most other surf recordings, his always sound like they were made by anemic robots. that's the appeal, I know, but man he doesn't look good standing next to link wray
Avatar Thu. 6/23/16 8:58pm geezerette:

O Death is a terrifying song. Reverend Gary Davis had an equally sobering song about death, can't think of the name.
Ralph Stanley was a great one alright.
Avatar Thu. 6/23/16 9:00pm Flash Strap:

There are just so many more versions of this composition than I would have guessed. I love that. I love variations on a theme.
Avatar Thu. 6/23/16 9:02pm geezerette:

Loved finding out that Harrison's impromptu audition for Beatles was "Rumble".
Avatar    Thu. 6/23/16 9:02pm hyde:

@geezerette i consider the Stanley Brothers Rich-R-Tone 78's to be among the most amazing American songs of the 20th century. I'd shoot that stuff to the stars if it were up to me.
Avatar Thu. 6/23/16 9:02pm geezerette:

this is completely my favorite Artie Shaw recording
Avatar Thu. 6/23/16 9:05pm geezerette:

Raymond Scott's music is such an important part of the Looney Toons world.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/23/16 9:05pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

@geez: 'Raunchy', actually. & what Paul played for John when they met was Eddie Cochran's '20 Flight Rock'. Impressive he could tune the guitar, & knew the whole thing...What John was singing when Paul 1st saw him was the DelVikings' 'Come & Go With Me' - but he didn't know all the words & was making up edgier ones - which impressed Paul...
Learned that some of what I admired Carl Stalling for was actually Raymond Scott. & Scott got a lot of flack for his style @ the time, I think is the story...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/23/16 9:06pm JtotheK:

Well this is interesting! Irwin Chusid / Raymod Scott connection...

"His legacy underwent a revival in the early 1990s after Irwin Chusid met Raymond and his wife Mitzi at their home in California and discovered a vast collection of unreleased recordings of rehearsals and studio sessions.[15] In 1992, the release of Reckless Nights and Turkish Twilights on Columbia produced by Irwin Chusid (with Hal Willner as executive producer) was the first major-label CD compilation of his groundbreaking 1937–39 six-man quintet. A year earlier, Irwin Chusid and Will Friedwald produced a CD of live Scott quintet broadcasts titled The Man Who Made Cartoons Swing for the Stash label. Around this time, the director of The Ren & Stimpy Show, John Kricfalusi, began hot-wiring his cartoon episodes with original Scott quintet recordings."
