Anyone do anything cool for World Goth Day? Can't say there was much of anything to do in the suburbs.
Avatar Tue. 6/7/16 12:09am Matt from Springfield:

I wore black, and listened to some Jesus & Mary Chain. Other than that the day just didn't feel too gothy.
Avatar Tue. 6/7/16 12:10am slugluv1313:

hi Julie!!!!!!!!!
Avatar Tue. 6/7/16 12:10am C.S.:

I rode a bike on a rail trail (not goth) all by myself (somewhat goth?). Just not sure how to celebrate that day.

WOW very cool re: Ken Fury, digging his sounds
ok, i am painfully out of the loop -- but when WAS World Goth Day?
and i dunno, i am Hungarian -- so there are times when EVERY day feels like World Goth Day!

@slugluv: Like Julie said, every year it's May 22 since 2009. (I actually think the weekend part this year threw me off, it kinda snuck up on me and I didn't plan ahead).

Hungarian! Transylvania-adjacent! ;)
Avatar Tue. 6/7/16 12:18am slugluv1313:

thank you, Julie!
hah! i was cat sitting that day for a number of different kitties; aside from bats, are there any creatures MORE Goth? (the ones here insist that cats are even MORE Goth than bats)
yup, Hungarian! did you know that Transylvania used to be located in Hungary?
Avatar Tue. 6/7/16 12:20am Matt from Springfield:

Black cats make a wonderful "familiar"! :)
Yep, the Hungarian half of Austria-Hungary. Hungarians from Transylvania are known as "Szeklers".
Avatar Tue. 6/7/16 12:24am slugluv1313:

ah! thank you Matt, did not know about "Szeklers"!
in the meantime -- marking May 22nd on 2017 calendar
(maybe i miss it b/c it is in the Spring? and not a "darker" time of the year)
Avatar Tue. 6/7/16 12:30am Matt from Springfield:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 6/7/16 12:51am Julie:

The Vast Underneath is an amazing album, too long since I've played it.
Avatar Tue. 6/7/16 12:52am Matt from Springfield:

OOH! Orange! You've played them a few times before, but wow you jogged my memory with this lovely! I need to get some songs from them!

Avatar Tue. 6/7/16 12:56am ! I X Key !:

!
Avatar Tue. 6/7/16 12:59am C.S.:

@Matt I think that was a point you brought up a couple of comments boards ago regarding the 1990s and music.
Avatar Tue. 6/7/16 1:00am Matt from Springfield:

The 90s were amazing for dreampop/goth/metal releases, almost all of which I first tuned into after the fact.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 6/7/16 1:00am coelacanth:

i rarely heard Irwin through the entire 90s, because of my work schedule.
i will definitely seek more Boo.
Avatar Tue. 6/7/16 1:02am Matt from Springfield:

@CS: Yes, originally from one of Scott W's shows, on good years of music and whether there are "bad" years--I stated that there are no "bad" years of music, every year will have something amazing in some genre. But thinking to 1990, some years are indeed "thin" on good music!
Avatar Tue. 6/7/16 1:04am C.S.:

I know Meghan had said grunge ruined music. I wasn't a fan either. Discovered college radio way late in the game but like you, found many great songs and artists from that time after the fact.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 6/7/16 1:06am coelacanth:

i wonder if i could've met David Bowie. the day after i ran into legal trouble with my livery license (which lasted 3 years) one of his guitarists asked me to be his driver.
Avatar Tue. 6/7/16 1:07am C.S.:

I was thinking of a Mistle Thrush song the other day and couldn't believe it came out such a long time ago. Wish I caught this stuff the first time around.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 6/7/16 1:08am JakeGould:

The problem with grunge is it opened the door to tons of lunkhead metal and really drowned out the softer indie stuff… It did—in it’s own way—open the door to more “twee” pop thanks to Kurt Cobain’s advocacy and smaller labels like K and Kill Rock Stars being able to finance smaller bands thanks to larger bands, but hey… The circle of life!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 6/7/16 1:09am coelacanth:

i was driving toward out of fmu range, but what i heard was great. i will get that book - after i move.
Avatar Tue. 6/7/16 1:10am C.S.:

Grunge seemed to be the response to a dying and hokey late 80s music scene. I heard people say it was more honest but I felt they threw out the baby with the bathwater so to speak by wanted to divorce themselves of synthesizers and other great 1980s elements.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 6/7/16 1:12am JakeGould:

@C.S.: What drove me nuts about grunge is how many musicians and fans I knew who would use the popularity of grunge to dump on synth music and say things like “Well, I’m really making real music by playing a real instrument…” or something along those lines… And sometimes that would be said—and is still said—in opposition to rap and hip hop. There was a little bit of redneck in some if the grunge world I cannot abide by.
Avatar Tue. 6/7/16 1:13am C.S.:

Getting my Tamaryn fix.
Avatar Tue. 6/7/16 1:14am C.S.:

So true JakeGould. I heard those comments too.
Avatar Tue. 6/7/16 1:14am Matt from Springfield:

@CS: And saxophones! Every band was required to have a saxophone player come in for solos during that decade.
Avatar Tue. 6/7/16 1:16am C.S.:

@Matt Ha! Just about.
Avatar Tue. 6/7/16 1:17am Matt from Springfield:

Ah, Goldie's country-pop album again :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 6/7/16 1:17am Julie:

@Matt there is a bar I go to that has the album cover on their ladies room door
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 6/7/16 1:17am JakeGould:

Goldie Hawn sang this? Was she a Laurel Canyon wannabe?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 6/7/16 1:18am JakeGould:

Jesus Christ did she have a nice production team on that LP. www.discogs.com...
Avatar Tue. 6/7/16 1:21am Matt from Springfield:

@Julie: HA! And the men's? A cover with anyone named "Dick"? ;)
Avatar Tue. 6/7/16 1:21am C.S.:

And that's a big reason why I listen. Such a learning experience.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 6/7/16 1:24am Julie:

I honestly forget who's on the men's room door!
Avatar Tue. 6/7/16 1:26am slugluv1313:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 6/7/16 2:03am Julie:

Avatar Tue. 6/7/16 2:04am Matt from Springfield:

Awake, though zoning out.
Avatar Tue. 6/7/16 2:04am Matt from Springfield:

"Oomingmak" - NOT helping on the zone-out front! :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 6/7/16 2:17am coelacanth:

i wondered if you'd play some Barrett. i had a 5-album pink floyd listen yesterday. it's settled...the first album is the best.
Avatar Tue. 6/7/16 2:19am listener mark:

Yay! I was listening in the car on WMFU 90.1 .

Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 6/7/16 2:20am coelacanth:

...and this album i just put in a box during your mic break.
hmmm...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 6/7/16 2:21am Julie:

that's actually a single in the box set, I don't know that it was ever on a real album
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 6/7/16 2:26am Julie:

this is the bong set, by the way
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 6/7/16 2:27am coelacanth:

Matt, i awoke by 8.30am and never left the house until 11.30pm. 5 pink floyd albums; 2 David Bowie; 2 Love; 1 Curtis Mayfield...i forget what else i listened to, but i learned the Love song from 1966 that "nights in white satin" is highly derivative of.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 6/7/16 2:28am Julie:

ooh what's the song?
Avatar Tue. 6/7/16 2:29am Matt from Springfield:

@coela: Intense stuff! Hope you don't have a final exam to study all this for!..

Ajda! BFoO!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 6/7/16 2:31am coelacanth:

Julie, true i didn't hear paint box. i have that on the masters of rock comp...and i forget which song, but it's on their first album. i'll try to figure it out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 6/7/16 2:31am coelacanth:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 6/7/16 2:45am Julie:

this record is SO GOOD
Avatar Tue. 6/7/16 2:48am Matt from Springfield:

Early EARLY Genesis! Their first album in fact, "From Genesis To Revelation". The title that often got them placed in the Christian rock album section!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 6/7/16 2:49am Julie:

yes indeed, though they did have christian themes
Avatar Tue. 6/7/16 2:54am Matt from Springfield:

Awww, it's time already. Another great time spinning tunes, really enjoyed it, thanks!
Avatar Tue. 6/7/16 2:57am Matt from Springfield:
