I play music that is old and that is new. Some of it is digital while some is analog. It is from many different countries; sometimes it is loud and at other times it is quiet.

浅草 Asakusa is a town located in the north east part of central Tokyo. It was a place where jazz and opera from the west flourished and then got mixed with 18th century pop culture in the pre-WW2 period. Also I used to live there. I'm doing a little Asakusa audio sight-seeing tour this evening!

I'll miss your program this evening but when I think of Asakusa, 人力車 comes to mind. Did you know it calls "rickshaw" in west?
Avatar Mon. 6/6/16 4:12pm Mayuko:

hello mzz! yah I've heard of people calling it rickshaw in the west, I wonder how that happened though.
Avatar Mon. 6/6/16 5:02pm Mayuko:

Azenbow soeda is a singer who was active in the early 1900 who is known for his socialistic, political songs. There’s a stone memorial monument for him in Bentenyama park in Asakusa, it’s a very small park in the grounds of Sensoji temple, where it’s big bell is placed. www.nytimes.com...
Avatar Mon. 6/6/16 5:04pm Mayuko:

Kagomari no kyoku is a track for ‘Edo Daikagura’, the balancing act & juggling performance / ritual from 400 years ago edo-daikagura.com... You can watch it live at, again, Asakusa Engei Hall, a venue for traditional comic shows and performances www.hellojapan.asia...

Now is the perfect season to get a beer taking outdoor seats on Hoppy street in Asakusa...

Hi james! Thank you for tuning in!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 6/6/16 5:16pm rbxbx:

Ooo. I love Hoppy! I recently found out Azasu in the East Village serves it (as well as high balls), need to take more advantage of that.

Hi all!

I loved seeing the fake food samples in Kappa-bashi district, it’s like wax museum of food. Def worth checking out content.time.com...
Apparently you can make your own too at some workshops…

Hi rbxbx! I became beer drinker after I moved to NYC, so my drink used to be plum liquor in those days, haha. Probably now I'd like Hoppy much better. & thank you for tuning in!

Hi melinda! Welcome on board!

Masuda Keyton, the member of Akireta Boys, lived in Asakusa and said to be often hanging out at アンヂェラス the cafe Angelus, the oldest coffee shop in Japan tabelog.com...
My family would often hang out there too when I was little…

After I grew up and started living in Asakusa by myself, I’d go to Cafe de Naniwaya for coffee every week though:

Coffee is great, the interior design is old and sophisticated, the owner is the coolest guy I’ve ever seen, and he NEVER fails to pick good music!!! (music selections in shops were often a huge problem for me when I lived in Japan.)

Umeshu was always a bit too sweet for my tastes. I know some people that really like it though
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 6/6/16 5:23pm rbxbx:

I like Hoppy because it seems lighter than beer, don't feel so fat and bloated after drinking a few ;)
Avatar Mon. 6/6/16 5:26pm Mayuko:

yah, umeshu is generally quite sweet, I happened to find one bar on Hoppy street then where they had a pretty good golden color umeshu that wasn't too sweet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 6/6/16 5:28pm listener james from westwood:

Who knew so many of those food samples came from one place? As a kid, I thought they dipped real food in Lucite or some other plastic and just let it dry. I could occasionally be really dense as a kid.

Hi, folks. About the only cultural significance of my hometown is that it claims to have the longest continuously-running theater in the US (since 1911). www.scenictheater.com... The Elvis impersonator is my sister's husband.
Avatar Mon. 6/6/16 5:31pm Mayuko:

古今亭志ん生 was one of the legendary Rakugo storyteller, rakugo literally means “fallen words”, and it’s just one storyteller sitting on the stage without any set, nor prop, and he acts every person in a story. You can see Rakugo performances at Asakusa Engei Hall although it must be difficult to understand if you don’t know Japanese… www.hellojapan.asia...
Avatar Mon. 6/6/16 5:34pm Mayuko:

wow james, it didn't even occur to me to imagine what the making process of those wax food is like when I was little. I was just so fascinated by them. Felt like time stopped in silence.
Avatar Mon. 6/6/16 5:37pm Mayuko:

Hi Ken, welcome on board! that theater looks pretty great, I'll look into the link more after the show!

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 6/6/16 5:43pm rbxbx:

Wish I knew about all of these things back when I visited! Will have to do it again some day :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 6/6/16 6:03pm listener james from westwood:

That's a very odd way for them to have redone the town, especially in a country with buildings that go back centuries. There's history all around!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 6/6/16 6:04pm listener james from westwood:

Now in Brooklyn, I can totally see hipsters putting up, say, an artisanal beard bar with tin ceilings and leech jars and such for the faux-19th-century look.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 6/6/16 6:07pm northguineahills:

Just looked up Asakusa on Google Earth, realized I've been there a few times as a kid.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 6/6/16 6:13pm listener james from westwood:

Avatar Mon. 6/6/16 6:15pm Mayuko:

I hope you can travel back there someday, rbxbx! james, Brooklyn at least is not putting up some fake wax dolls of NYC celebrity from the 70's or something to decorate the streets, haha. Not yet. Welcome, northguineahills!!

Asakusa Hana-yashiki is the oldest amusement park that was first built in 1853 and it has the oldest roller coaster in Japan… Possibly the most frighetning roller coaster ever because it’s so old you feel like it could collapse at any moment while you’re riding it. I would often go there when I was little… www.hanayashiki.net...
