Avatar Tue. 5/31/16 11:59am Tony Coulter:

Today's show will feature lots of tracks from a new 9-hour French music comp (pictured atop the playlist), plus a scattering of Tomita tracks (big thanks to Listener John D for supplying all my Tomita needs!)

Hello to Tony, goodbye to May!
Avatar Tue. 5/31/16 12:04pm V Priceless:

Hey Tony! Thanks in advance for the Tomita trib....."Snowflakes Are Dancing" was required listening back in the day...and still is, in fact!
Avatar Tue. 5/31/16 12:06pm Tony Coulter:

Hey, James! This French comp I'll be featuring today ("Rien Ni Personne") is a child of May -- it was released on May 22nd.
Avatar Tue. 5/31/16 12:06pm Tony Coulter:

Hola, VP!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 5/31/16 12:07pm JtotheK:

Snowflakes Are Dancing - a friend of mine pointed out that album contained the track 'Arabesque No 1' - which was the music for Jack Horkheimer and his Star Hustler TV show. Hi Tony, hi everyone!
Avatar Tue. 5/31/16 12:08pm Tony Coulter:

@ V Priceless: Tomita will be sprinkled throughout the show, like sonic seasoning.
Avatar Tue. 5/31/16 12:09pm V Priceless:

indeed it was, JtotheK!
Avatar Tue. 5/31/16 12:09pm Tony Coulter:

Ahoy, JtotheK!
  Tue. 5/31/16 12:15pm Dean:

As much as I loved Snowflakes, I was a real sucker for Tomita's Holst, Mussourgsky, and Stravinsky albums. The same year as "Planets" Patrick Gleeson released an electronic version. I had both, played both, but can't recall which I preferred. It'd be fun to hear them both back-to-back track-by-track (or synaurally).
Avatar Tue. 5/31/16 12:15pm Tony Coulter:

The French stuff likewise will only be sprinkled throughout -- but enough to heavily flavor the stock.
Avatar Tue. 5/31/16 12:16pm Cecile:

I heard Tomita's The Planets a lot. My husband and I used to call him "Tomato"
Avatar Tue. 5/31/16 12:16pm Tony Coulter:

Heya, Cecile!
Avatar Tue. 5/31/16 12:19pm Cecile:

Hey Tony!

I'm digging this music on a wet and rainy birthday...
Avatar Tue. 5/31/16 12:19pm Tony Coulter:

Oh! Happy birthday to ya!!
Avatar Tue. 5/31/16 12:19pm Cecile:

thanks!
Avatar Tue. 5/31/16 12:19pm V Priceless:

oh hey, Happy Birthday, Cecile! Have a blast!
Avatar Tue. 5/31/16 12:21pm Tony Coulter:

There's a tiny bit of Zappa in this Torke piece, methinks. Torke wrote it when he was 23 and still in music school.
Avatar Tue. 5/31/16 12:21pm Cecile:

thanks. I had a blast. Now I'm kind of recovering.

Have a pickled egg and a shell of lager for me, Cecile.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 5/31/16 12:24pm JtotheK:

I think my Salsoul Orchestra LP collection is limited to their Christmas Albums.
Avatar Tue. 5/31/16 12:25pm Cecile:

I will probably have a shell, and some devilled eggs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 5/31/16 12:25pm JtotheK:

@Brian - I used to live close to area bar named 'The Pickled Egg'.
Avatar Tue. 5/31/16 12:25pm Tony Coulter:

Avatar Tue. 5/31/16 12:26pm Tony Coulter:

Ahoy, Gary!
  Tue. 5/31/16 12:26pm MrFab:

Yo Tony! Is that French comp contempo or retro sounds? (Or both?)
Avatar Tue. 5/31/16 12:27pm Gary:

This is *not* how I remember the Firebird Suite ... ;-p
Avatar Tue. 5/31/16 12:27pm Tony Coulter:

Heya, MrFab! Contempo -- but with a good smattering of experimental/industrial-type artists who've been around since the '80s.
Avatar Tue. 5/31/16 12:28pm Tony Coulter:

Newer stuff by them, I mean....
  Tue. 5/31/16 12:28pm Dean:

Yeah, and to think legend has it that Sacre de Printemps caused the riot.
Avatar Tue. 5/31/16 12:30pm Tony Coulter:

The audience wan't rioting -- they were just busy inventing the mosh pit.
Avatar Tue. 5/31/16 12:31pm βrian:

I hear devilled eggs are très chic now. For grins, my wife made some, served with dilly beans and Bell's Oberon beer. Not too shabby.

Avatar Tue. 5/31/16 12:36pm Cecile:

Brian, that sounds like the best thing ever.
Devilled eggs are going out of fashion here, but my local watering hole just added them, and they are delightful.
Avatar Tue. 5/31/16 12:37pm βrian:

At least one local eatery now offers several choices. Go figure. I should look into that.
Avatar Tue. 5/31/16 12:38pm Cecile:

just so you know, I make devilled eggs so good that one party guest gave me a beautiful devilled egg tray so I would keep making them.

My secret is...a secret.
Avatar Tue. 5/31/16 12:39pm βrian:

Eggs are just damn awesome food, by the way. Especially when you can get good fresh ones. We have Frittata Sundays in our house.
Avatar Tue. 5/31/16 12:39pm V Priceless:

this is "Spirits Drifting"-esque
  Tue. 5/31/16 12:43pm Dean:

Had a wonderful fritatta (well, a tortilla) yesterday at a pot luck.

I'm thinking a "secret" for deviled eggs might be Worcestshire-related...
Avatar Tue. 5/31/16 12:44pm Tony Coulter:

So, I don't normally shill for labels and push specific releases on you, but, still, I should mention this: "Rien Ni Personne," in all its 9-hour glory, is available for free (name your price) on bandcamp: nostalgiedelaboue.bandcamp.com...
Avatar Tue. 5/31/16 12:45pm βrian:

Spanish smoked paprika is nice. Not a typical "smoked" flavor. Subtle and rich. Deep carmine color, too.
Avatar Tue. 5/31/16 12:48pm Cecile:

Dean, I do put that in there, but that is not the X factor. Same with the paprika.
Avatar Tue. 5/31/16 12:50pm βrian:

Was that a Cathstillian tortilla?
Avatar Tue. 5/31/16 12:50pm northguineahills:

For some reason I want to hear a Yannick Dauby/Yabby You mashup.
Avatar Tue. 5/31/16 12:50pm Tony Coulter:

What happens if you eat angel cake and deviled eggs at the same time? Is there a war for your soul (and stomach)?
Avatar Tue. 5/31/16 12:51pm βrian:

I hope it's now powdered lemonade mix, Cecile. Or Lipton's onion soup mix ...

(Too Midwestern for me.)
Avatar Tue. 5/31/16 12:52pm Tony Coulter:

Greets, NGH!

Hmm: Dauby You?
Avatar Tue. 5/31/16 12:52pm βrian:

Oh that nasal drone of Beat Happening. It's been a while.
Avatar Tue. 5/31/16 12:52pm Cecile:

I don't know, but my dad used to go to a cloister of a (mostly) silent order of nuns every year for their annual reception, and the only cake they would serve would be angel food.
  Tue. 5/31/16 12:52pm Dean:

Yeth, βrian. Lo thiento, thee.

Capers? (I know. It is and shall remain a secret.)
Avatar Tue. 5/31/16 12:53pm Cecile:

nope, not capers.
Avatar Tue. 5/31/16 12:53pm northguineahills:

How come I am just learning of this Beat Happening/Screaming Trees album now!???!!
Avatar Tue. 5/31/16 12:53pm βrian:

Soak that Angel in rum, please.
Avatar Tue. 5/31/16 12:54pm V Priceless:

Coleman's mustard? It's great w/Scotch eggs.
  Tue. 5/31/16 12:54pm Dean:

Got it! Bigfat's 8o8 Naga Jolokia Hot Sauce!
Avatar Tue. 5/31/16 12:54pm βrian:

If there were capers, olives, and anchovies, you'd have a devilled puttanesca.
Avatar Tue. 5/31/16 12:55pm βrian:

I'll put Squid brand fish sauce in near anything, though I won't admit its presence.
  Tue. 5/31/16 12:56pm MrFab:

Wow, Beat Happening. Hello, 80s college rock! That caused a bit of a flashback: Do I have any papers due tomorrow?
  Tue. 5/31/16 12:57pm Dean:

I slipped two or three anchovies (and capers!) into the marinade for the butcher steak I grilled yesterday. Wife had no idea, and the steak was superb. Now I have to figure out ways to use the rest of the anchovies in the jar. A Bolognese, for sure. Hmmm, maybe deviled eggs?
Avatar Tue. 5/31/16 12:58pm βrian:

Perhaps a pissaladière, Dean?
Avatar Tue. 5/31/16 1:01pm Cecile:

that would work. Worchestershire sauce is anchovy based so it makes sense.
  Tue. 5/31/16 1:01pm Dean:

I'd love it but nobody else in the house would. I wake up mornings craving pasta with anchovies and olives. One of the very best dishes I've had over the years in otherwise overrated Bay Area restaurants is Cesar's "matrimonios," grilled anchovies served on toasts with aioli. Luscious.
  Tue. 5/31/16 1:03pm Dean:

I put Worcestshire in my mac 'n' cheese, and once I had to apologize that as a result it wasn't quite vegetarian. Not sure I'd put anchovies in it, though.
Avatar Tue. 5/31/16 1:04pm northguineahills:

Making anchovy sauces w/ capers, smoked ground chillies (+ other ingredients) w/ pasta is one of my favorite things to make. Asian fish sauces and Worcestershire figure prominently in many dishes as well.
Avatar Tue. 5/31/16 1:06pm βrian:

Sumac might be a nice surprise on devilled eggs. Nice color and a pleasant sourness.
Avatar Tue. 5/31/16 1:06pm Tony Coulter:

Yma Sumac on deviled eggs? Not sure if I'd like that.
Avatar Tue. 5/31/16 1:10pm βrian:

Rhus coriaria, Tony. Zesty!
  Tue. 5/31/16 1:13pm Dean:

Gonna have to grab lunch soon. Thinking anchovy burrito with extra Yma Sumac and a side of Josephine Baker.
Avatar Tue. 5/31/16 1:14pm Tony Coulter:

Don't forget to add a slice of Tomita....
Avatar Tue. 5/31/16 1:18pm βrian:

Ground cumin? That might add some earthy depth.
Avatar Tue. 5/31/16 1:19pm βrian:

Thin slivers of black truffle?

  Tue. 5/31/16 1:23pm MrFab:

Hey Dean,
Q.: What sound does a 20th century composer make when you punch him in the stomach?
A.: Orff!
Avatar Tue. 5/31/16 1:26pm V Priceless:

haha @ Tony
  Tue. 5/31/16 1:26pm Dean:

Q: What 19th century composer tastes good on a summer day?
A: Rainbow Schubert.
Avatar Tue. 5/31/16 1:28pm Cecile:

I used to use a Lebanese spice blend that had sumac in it for my eggs. I'm not using it now.
Avatar Tue. 5/31/16 1:28pm Cecile:

Okay, the secret is Old Bay.
Avatar Tue. 5/31/16 1:29pm βrian:

Sounds like zatar. Avec oregano and ground sesame seeds?
Avatar Tue. 5/31/16 1:30pm βrian:

Similar to Spike, Cecile? I've seen it. Never had it.
  Tue. 5/31/16 1:30pm Dean:

Old Bay! Duh!!! There it sits on my lazy Susan, and I use it all the time in burgers, etc. A great secret!
Avatar Tue. 5/31/16 1:31pm V Priceless:

of course! Love Old Bay
Avatar Tue. 5/31/16 1:33pm Tony Coulter:

I rub it all over myself, instead of Old Spice.
Avatar Tue. 5/31/16 1:33pm Cecile:

it's like a crab boil deal. Lots of different spices. It has a kind of a bit of celery flavor, but nothing really stands out except THE DELICIOUSNESS
Avatar Tue. 5/31/16 1:34pm βrian:

Tony, were you caught Rachmaninoff in the hay loft.
Avatar Tue. 5/31/16 1:34pm Cecile:

Brian, I think she was doing a kind of red zataar, except none of us knew what it was back then.
  Tue. 5/31/16 1:34pm Dean:

Beethoven?
Avatar Tue. 5/31/16 1:35pm βrian:

When I hear about crab boils, I reach for the lance.
Avatar Tue. 5/31/16 1:35pm Cecile:

  Tue. 5/31/16 1:41pm Dean:

Time to wrap up the puns. Tony, you're still in Oregano, right?
Avatar Tue. 5/31/16 1:41pm βrian:

Our sage is flowering right now — a beautiful purple color.
Avatar Tue. 5/31/16 1:42pm βrian:

Tsunami Basin, if I remember. Right, Tony?
Avatar Tue. 5/31/16 1:42pm Tony Coulter:

@ Dean: Yep, I'm still in Oregano. These days, though, Portland is knee deep in marijuana leaves.
Avatar Tue. 5/31/16 1:45pm Tony Coulter:

It's actually getting ridiculous. There's another marijuana dispensary every 20 feet.
Avatar Tue. 5/31/16 1:46pm βrian:

How's that glaucoma doing, BTW?
Avatar Tue. 5/31/16 1:49pm Tony Coulter:

Talking of food, I live two blocks from the oddly named Yamhill St. I always picture a giant mound of yams.
Avatar Tue. 5/31/16 1:50pm Tony Coulter:

@ βrian: You don't even need an excuse to buy pot anymore -- it's legal here now. Hence, it is so much more boring....
  Tue. 5/31/16 1:54pm Dean:

My neighborhood is actively protesting a city plan to permit a dispensary around the corner from us. Kinda funny. This is Berkeley, after all.
