Morning, KP and to all people who may come in...

Good morning Jeff. Here for a little bit...

Good morning, mysterious person with a little bit of time for us...
Avatar Mon. 5/9/16 3:20am Eiderdown:

Top of the morning to you all. Heya Jeff!
Avatar Mon. 5/9/16 3:24am Jeff Conklin:

Hey, Adam
  Mon. 5/9/16 3:26am dave b.:

Jeff,
I've been a WFMU listener for almost 30 years. Besides a few rare plays from Bob Brainen and Jesse Jarnow, I think that you may be the only other dj on the station to play the Grateful Dead. Very nice. I was stunned hearing those first notes of Estimated Prophet.
Anyway.
I usually don't do much listening at this hour and I am happy to have stumbled on to your show. Nice playlists. Its moments like these that have kept me a faithful listener and supporter. All the best.
Longtime/lifetime GD fan.
Avatar Mon. 5/9/16 3:27am KP:

That was Super.
Avatar Mon. 5/9/16 3:30am KP:

Dan Rather interviewed Bob Weir yesterday.
Avatar Mon. 5/9/16 3:33am Jeff Conklin:

@Dave B: I often play the Dead as they are near and dear to my heart and they are spiritual forebears to a lot of modern music I play whether those artists see the connection or not. Thanks for tuning in.
Avatar Mon. 5/9/16 3:39am Smilty69:

Nate K interviewed Jesse Jarnow re: Grateful Dead book he wrote. Pretty good stuff.
Avatar Mon. 5/9/16 3:40am Jeff Conklin:

@Smilty69: Cool. Jesse and I go way back. Reading the book now.
Avatar Mon. 5/9/16 3:45am Smilty69:

Last week someone mentioned Phish on the comments board. Jeff, have you ever played them on your show?
Avatar Mon. 5/9/16 3:45am Jeff Conklin:

@Smilty69: No I haven't and its very unlikely i ever will
  Mon. 5/9/16 3:46am dave b.:

Those connections and segues are the mark of an artist. It's all too often that G/D get clumped into the jamband camp and stopped there. It's great to see the dots connected to different genres and more exploratory stuff.
If you get a chance sometime, listen to a song from Bill Frisel, Joe Lavano and Phil Motian called "Cambodia" It has a similar Dark Star vibe.
Avatar Mon. 5/9/16 3:51am Smilty69:

I never got into Phish but I do think Billy Breathes is beautiful album.
Avatar Mon. 5/9/16 3:52am Jeff Conklin:

@Smilty: they are a great band in many ways but not AG material.
  Mon. 5/9/16 4:01am Spoonys:

I wish more people realized the Dead are much more than a jam band. I cant tell you how many times people say they wouldn't like them because they don't like jam bands
  Mon. 5/9/16 4:05am Spoonys:

I am also blown away by how many "deadheads" put Garcia on such a pedestal. Without Bob it wouldn't have been the the Dead
Avatar Mon. 5/9/16 4:12am Jeff Conklin:

@Spoonys: Re: jam band/Dead thing: I've been amazed at how things have changed in that regard. People are a lot more open to them as great songwriters than they were 15 years ago...
Avatar    Mon. 5/9/16 4:18am Sem Chumbo:

Good morning.J.C., and all. Along for the rest of the ride, watching the river flow.
  Mon. 5/9/16 4:22am Spoonys:

@Jeff that is really good to hear actually. Also fun fact on the subject of Phish....I say fun fact, but don't hold me to it...I am pretty sure at one point a Phish concert held the world record for most nude people photographed at one time.
Avatar Mon. 5/9/16 4:23am Jeff Conklin:

@Spoonys: That's true and I was there (not nude)

Mon. 5/9/16 4:28am John in Texas:

Good morning! I dropped in as our DJ was speaking. Fortunate to hear that version of, "When I Paint My Masterpiece." Nice to see DJ Drone Beard in the Ghetto: )
  Mon. 5/9/16 4:29am Spoonys:

I would imagine it is hard to forget a day like that
Avatar Mon. 5/9/16 4:35am Jeff Conklin:

Morning, John.

@Spoonys: It was at one of their festivals. I didn't see the photo shoot and I think I'm better for it...
Avatar Mon. 5/9/16 4:38am Bentangle:

Grabbed the full Lake Mary digital discography on Bandcamp the other day and have been binge listening ever since. Such a great artist. This album sent me down the road.
Avatar Mon. 5/9/16 4:40am Jeff Conklin:

@Bentangle: This album sent you or hearing Lake Mary on this program did? ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 5/9/16 4:42am Scraps deSelby:

h'lo Jeff. It's nice to hear these musicians at night, wake up and go to sleep hearing them. I'm now in the hospital / rehab healing from a fractured hip, and it's even more nice to hear WFMU and Avant Ghetto. Thank you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 5/9/16 4:44am Scraps deSelby:

p.s.: Don Cherry in free jazz mode is awesome.
  Mon. 5/9/16 4:45am josh:

occasionally i'll hear something on WFMU that really grabs me and forces me to stop what i'm doing and take a note of who the artist is. it keeps turning out to be lake mary recently.

it's kinda like the opposite of that nick cave quote about the RHCP.
Avatar Mon. 5/9/16 4:45am Jeff Conklin:

Hey, Scraps, hope you're ok and that we may help in the recovery process a little bit!
Avatar Mon. 5/9/16 4:46am Jeff Conklin:

@josh: That's great to hear! It's an amazing, multi-faceted project...
  Mon. 5/9/16 4:47am josh:

no kidding jeff - i see there's a collaborator credit on this one, but it's quite different from the other tracks i've heard.
Avatar Mon. 5/9/16 4:48am Jeff Conklin:

Guys, I think this is my favorite set I've ever done.
  Mon. 5/9/16 4:49am Ajay:

Just completed a 15 kms run in the sunshine in the Dutch countryside with The Avant Ghetto on my cans. The best show ever! Thanks for the jams Jeff
Avatar Mon. 5/9/16 4:50am Jeff Conklin:

Aww, thanks so much, Ajay. Deeply appreciated..
Avatar Mon. 5/9/16 4:51am Bentangle:

@jeff: Fair cop, his track on Songs To Fill The Air was my introduction. I tip my hat to you good sir.
  Mon. 5/9/16 4:51am ?:

Moring Jeff, G-R-E-A-T show!
Greetings from Spain
  Mon. 5/9/16 4:51am saywhat:

its a fair cop but i still say society is to blame
Avatar Mon. 5/9/16 4:52am Jeff Conklin:

@Bentangle: Ha. In all fairness, the great Jeffrey Davison (Shrunken Planet) hipped me to him
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 5/9/16 4:53am Scraps deSelby:

laughs: Kate Carr's album title "It was a time of laboured metaphors" is great
Avatar Mon. 5/9/16 4:54am Jeff Conklin:

Thank you, anonymous Spaniard!
  Mon. 5/9/16 4:56am Mario:

Not so anonymous...
Avatar Mon. 5/9/16 4:57am Bentangle:

@jeff: You introduced me to the great Jon Collin as well. Oh-so-grateful for that tip-off.
Avatar Mon. 5/9/16 4:57am Bentangle:

Weeeird, I posted that before I saw you were playing JC ...
Avatar Mon. 5/9/16 5:03am Jeff Conklin:

Collin never lets me down with his music. Another artist who is constantly evolving, seeking new paths...
  Mon. 5/9/16 5:13am lunch:

the music speaks for itself anyway
Avatar Mon. 5/9/16 5:22am dyingforbadmusic:

Tuned in too late for those 12-string beauties by AP <3 love it! Will the recording be available over the Free Music Archive?
Avatar Mon. 5/9/16 5:24am Jeff Conklin:

It'll be available on my archive ;)
Avatar Mon. 5/9/16 5:28am dyingforbadmusic:

That stuff is great! Glad you made these recordings possible!
Mon. 5/9/16 5:31am John in Texas:

Jeff, have you ever played anything by, The Doubling Riders before?
Mon. 5/9/16 5:33am George from Gravesend:

Good Morning. Great hearing a banjo as the sun is rising.
Avatar Mon. 5/9/16 5:40am Jeff Conklin:

@John: Don't know them.

@George: Thanks for listening
Avatar    Mon. 5/9/16 5:45am Sem Chumbo:

Glad to hear Dylan, especially enjoyed the *When I Paint My Masterpiece* earlier.
Listened to days of Dead from the Internet Archives while on a giant and very dull accounting project. Under-appreciated and under-credtited musical influence, as you say.
