P had made a plan with WB to begin a remaster/reissue series. He delivered (so he said) Purple Rain in 2014 for the 30th anniversary double CD release. It was supposed to begin a series of reissues with the alternate mixes and b-sides (of which there were many). I never heard anything official from WB about why it didn't happen. Guess they slept on it. Bet they wake now.

Another question - as someone whose favorite Artist is Hendrix :
How would you relate Prince to Hendrix?
To what extent did Prince explicitly acknowledge Jimi?
Because he evoked him strongly & was implicitly indebted to him (not just him obviously). By the end - that probably wasn't a problem - because everyone knew all that anyway...
Avatar Thu. 4/28/16 8:20pm robin:

where are purple rain screenings? (gulp, i have NEVER SEEN IT). you just said, and i just missed it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 4/28/16 8:21pm northguineahills:

Hmmm, Prince could play the guitar about as virtuosic as Hendrix, but only rarely displayed his chops...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 4/28/16 8:27pm Kurt Gottschalk:

ICP Center on 6th Ave in the W. Village, Robin. You HAVE to see it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 4/28/16 8:28pm Kurt Gottschalk:

prince had a lot more joni mitchell and carlos santana in him than he did hendrix, i believe.
Avatar Thu. 4/28/16 8:28pm glenn:

i've never seen it either.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 4/28/16 8:28pm Kurt Gottschalk:

Avatar Thu. 4/28/16 8:28pm tomasz.:

i never have either. i wonder if they're screening it round here. my best friend (the biggest Prince fan i know other than Kurt) prolly has the DVD tho
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 4/28/16 8:31pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

That's a bold statement - & there are people who rate Prince highly as a guitarist. Was he really that distinctive? If you wanted - you could say Hendrix & Prince both evoked Little Richard (maybe even Alvin Lee) - who in turn copped from Esquerita I suppose...I saw there was a video of Prince covering Jimi's Blues 'Red House' w/ Maceo - so he was alright doing that. As a Hendrix lover - it's always frankly rankled that Prince evoked Jimi & the general Purpleness so heavily - & I'm not aware of any explicit acknowledgement. Maybe it was like the young Steven Tyler denying Jagger - yerklnow - it's just what he had to do to 'learn to play like himself' as Miles would put it...I wonder if you could say Prince kept Jimi's legacy in ways that white Metalhead guitarcentric people never did (his transcendence of Genres, ferinstance) - but...nevermind...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 4/28/16 8:32pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Pete Townshend praised 'Purple Rain' as succeeding more seamlessly & totally @ what he himself wanted w/ his 'Rock Operas': a narrative that hangs together (even as a film) - w/ Pop songs that both work in the narrative & stand alone as good Pop.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 4/28/16 8:40pm northguineahills:

A few years ago, Eric Clapton did a Q&A tweet thingy, and someone asked how it felt to be the greatest living guitarist. His answer, "I don't know, ask Prince".

Taking a kitchen break to check in, briefly. Riveting. Between the heat from my oven and the heat from my radio, it's July in here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 4/28/16 8:45pm northguineahills:

His playing "style", definitely looks like Hendrix, although I haven't read enough interviews whether he's acknowledged Hendrix. But his disappearing guitar routine is pretty amazing too (where when done, he throws his guitar up in the air and another band member catches it as he walks off the stage.
  Thu. 4/28/16 8:45pm Dean:

Here's my testament to gross reduction: just got home, put on the Hindemith chamber music, checked fmu, remembered Kurt's show, turned off the Hindemith for now...
  Thu. 4/28/16 8:46pm Dean:

Also, judging from "Billy's Sunglasses," I'd say Prince had a soft spot for Robin Trower.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 4/28/16 8:47pm Kurt Gottschalk:

of prince? he made one record - one - where he shared production credits, and it was only a few years ago.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 4/28/16 9:22pm coelacanth:

i've just backtracked and i'll say the biggest similarity Prince has to Jimi is their respective commitment to perfect results; and to music in general. both great guitarist, but very different.
....and, ngh @8:40 -wow! although i consider that obvious, it's good of Clapton to say that!

And Clapton played with Duane Allman, just saying.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 4/28/16 9:29pm coelacanth:

playing with other great musicians seemed to be the only way to bring the fire up for Clapton. i guess because of his competitive nature, but man he was great when Duane or Bruce or Stevie were pushing him.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 4/28/16 9:31pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

@coel: For me that is the Clapton mystery: That him in the 1960s means so much to me - & Solo he's meant so little.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 4/28/16 9:36pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

@coel: Yeah - & also, I think EricC. was always self-conscious : having been told his Mom was his Sister - the cognitive dissonance of being a white English Bluesman - & things like Jimi's death & heroin put the Fear into him.
Townshend: 'People like Clapton were too ethnic; Hendrix was unashamedly Outward'...

We're going on here about Clapton because he gave props to Prince. Knowing nothing about the occasion, I assume he meant it, and until I learned that he made the remark it hadn't occurred to me that he might be right. Pretty cool when you think about it.
