This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

Here I am thinking those records are Marathon prizes we can win for pledging! Ah, we still win big by hearing them tonight. Howdy all!
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 6:51pm Gary:

Howdy!
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 6:53pm Flash Strap:

Hey there! you fine fellows are a little early, what a pleasant surprise! come on in and make yourselves at home
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 6:56pm Gary:

I'm going to be on the couch with a book
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 6:58pm hyde:

i'm going to be in the shower. but i can hear you in there!
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 6:59pm ndbob:

evening Evan and everyone!
  Thu. 4/21/16 7:00pm Ed:

HI!
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 7:00pm Flash Strap:

Hyde, Gary, Bob, James

so great to see you all
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 7:05pm Flash Strap:

Hi Ed!
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 7:06pm listener james from westwood:

I do love this style of chant.
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 7:08pm Flash Strap:

It's such a wild musical concept
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 7:08pm Little Danny:

Evening, all. Gorgeous album covers, Flash.
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 7:09pm Flash Strap:

Hey there Danny! How you doing?
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 7:11pm Flash Strap:

I just found these, and some others, two days ago. at a thrift shop that draws from a community which, y'know, is generally unlikely to have these kinds of records around. so it felt extra special
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 7:11pm Little Danny:

Good, man! Hoping that next Thursday's gonna inaugurate some shit for the one-two radio punch.
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 7:14pm Flash Strap:

that's great news, but it tears me up that i won't be there for that first one-two! I'm off the air for the next two weeks, alas
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 7:14pm listener james from westwood:

Always be searching!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 4/21/16 7:15pm Stepchild:

Hiya everyone! And BIG thanks for sharing those covers along with the music, Flash...
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 7:15pm ndbob:

Heya Danny
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 7:16pm Flash Strap:

Hello and welcome Stepchild. Glad you appreciate these covers, they really excite my sensibilities. Such lurid, visceral design
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 4/21/16 7:20pm Stepchild:

BAM! indeed
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 7:24pm Little Danny:

I remember when I first D/L'd the Pedro Santos from yer blog. Magic.
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 7:29pm Flash Strap:

it's sooooo good. i wish i had a better copy, mine sounds sort of crummy. relatively crummy for something so good i mean
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 4/21/16 7:30pm Stepchild:

Flash I've got to keep a discogs window open while I listen to your show. I've just got to! And it's saying the catalog number following the Bali 7", LD 340, is also a 7" and it dates it to 1957, FWIW.
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 7:33pm hyde:

did you say your Musique du Bali label was trashed? there's clean scans of a copy in the Bibliotheque Nationale: gallica.bnf.fr... de France
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 7:33pm Flash Strap:

oh interesting, i wasn't able to discern the date. 57 makes sense
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 7:34pm Flash Strap:

no, the label's fine, it's just in french and i was a little bamboozled trying to sort it all out
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 7:37pm Flash Strap:

@Stepchild: i do that too, by the way. it's pretty fun using discogs to dig deeper on anything you hear
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 4/21/16 7:39pm Stepchild:

Now /that/ is an amazing resource, hyde! I am keeping that one.
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 7:39pm Flash Strap:

yeah i gotta explore that !
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 4/21/16 7:41pm Stepchild:

Wikipedia en Francois knows a bit about the BAM label some of which hasn't made its way to discogs... fr.wikipedia.org...
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 7:42pm hyde:

the French are good about their libraries and film archives.
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 7:48pm Flash Strap:

This record has some wild stuff. I like how it's recorded, lots of ambient noises
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 7:53pm ndbob:

Incredible that you found these at a thrift shop Evan
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 7:55pm Flash Strap:

I've found some really unbelievable things in thrift shops–some funk and jazz LPs that I still can't believe I paid less than 50 bucks for, let alone 50 cents–but these are certainly among the most unlikely, literally exotic in every way, thrift shop finds of my life
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 7:56pm Flash Strap:

these beautiful birds
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 7:57pm ndbob:

I found some interesting records in North Dakota - not a lot there but minimal competition
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 7:58pm Flash Strap:

that counts for a lot!
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 7:58pm ndbob:

Time to go - excellent show Evan - so you will be off the next two weeks?
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 7:59pm Flash Strap:

that's how i've found so many great exotica records i think. just less competition for the genre in general
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 8:00pm Flash Strap:

hate to see you leave, bob! yeah, next two weeks I'll be gone. But Danny will be debuting, so don't miss that!
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 8:00pm hyde:

the thrift store finds are the best, because you know the chances are so low in among all those Perry Como, Foghat and 101 Strings lp's
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 4/21/16 8:00pm melinda:

howdy Flash & explorers!
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 8:01pm ndbob:

I won't - i love Danny's blogs
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 8:01pm Flash Strap:

Melinda! wonderful!
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 8:01pm ndbob:

Heya Melinda!
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 8:02pm Flash Strap:

me too bob, me too
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 8:02pm ndbob:

There's one great 101 Strings record actually
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 8:02pm Flash Strap:

there's a couple!
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 8:02pm Flash Strap:

which one do you love bob?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 4/21/16 8:03pm melinda:

hi bob!
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 8:03pm hyde:

@Flash i remember hearing you say that once before. i'm still a little skeptical, heh.

hi Melinda!
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 8:04pm ndbob:

both - Office Naps and the exotica 45s blogs?
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 8:05pm Flash Strap:

well, Les Baxter did two of them I think... not his best two, but interesting. then there's a few with great lurid value
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 8:05pm Flash Strap:

@bob: i meant which 101 strings
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 8:05pm ndbob:

the space pop one
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 8:06pm ndbob:

Music from 2001? can't remember the exact title
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 8:08pm hyde:

i'll allow that i have never dove deep enough into 101 strings to say there aren't good ones. but what i've heard i haven't liked. i could change my mind someday!
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 8:09pm ndbob:

@hyde the one I mentioned is realy different form their usual schlock
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 8:10pm hyde:

Little Danny's blogs are all good. I really love the Lonely Beat one, myself.
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 8:10pm hyde:

@ndb noted!
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 8:13pm ndbob:

astro sounds from beyond the year 2000 -
on youtube
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 8:15pm Flash Strap:

101 really does usually do nothing for me, but there's so many that they just had to do a good one occasionally. haven't heard 2000 before, Bob, but I'm going to
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 4/21/16 8:15pm melinda:

I like the Fleetwoods.
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 8:17pm ndbob:

@Evan well worth hearing @Melinda me too - so many good records
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 4/21/16 8:18pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...the years between Elvis & the Beatles are sort of haunting...a David Lynch thing almost...
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 8:18pm hyde:

Gary Troxel of the Fleetwoods married his high school sweetheart in 1960, and they're apparently still hitched!
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 8:19pm ndbob:

there was an important Supreme Court case over grandparents rights - where Troxel was the plantiff
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 8:20pm Flash Strap:

Fleetwoods are blowing my mind right now... I could play them all night
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 8:20pm Flash Strap:

Troxel is turning out to be an interesting fellow
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 8:20pm hyde:

@ndbob wow!
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 8:20pm ndbob:

@Rev my favorite era maybe
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 8:21pm Flash Strap:

oh and hi, Rabbit!
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 8:23pm hyde:

i went through a big doo wop phase a long time ago. i should dust off some of those records. Flamingo Serenade comes out a lot (i mean, how could it not? that record is a mind blower), but so many I haven't played in years....
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 4/21/16 8:24pm melinda:

I heard 'Tragedy' by the Fleetwoods on Bob Brainen's show a while back and bought the song but didn't explore further, so it's nice to hear more of them tonight.
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 8:25pm ndbob:

www.oyez.org...
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 8:25pm Flash Strap:

I'll play some more of theirs another night, I'm still sort of working my way through. I really love so much of it... and I think i'm due for another doowop phase myself
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 8:26pm ndbob:

I'm always ina doowop phase - Tragedy is a cover of the Thomas Wayne song
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 8:26pm Flash Strap:

that's an intense case, bob
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 8:28pm ndbob:

@Evan indeed - it's hard to pick a favorite genre - bit maybe doowop
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 4/21/16 8:30pm coelacanth:

hello Evan and all
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 8:32pm Flash Strap:

Hi there, C
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 4/21/16 8:34pm melinda:

Hi-C
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 8:34pm Flash Strap:

drums are so cool on this one
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 8:35pm hyde:

picking a favorite genre of music? i'm passing on even trying to think that one through!
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 8:35pm Flash Strap:

@ Hyde:me too.
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 8:38pm ndbob:

Not that I don't like a vast number of genres - but it terms of time doowop I think wins out
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 4/21/16 8:39pm Stepchild:

doowop concret tossup
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 4/21/16 8:40pm Stepchild:

this, though!!
Thu. 4/21/16 8:41pm David in Cleveland:

Hi, folks..

Favorite genre.. I'm torn between Japanese pop music
and '60s-'70s African rumba..
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 8:43pm Flash Strap:

Hey there David with the interesting taste!
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 8:44pm hyde:

all i know is, i'm not picking Gregorian chants.
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 8:46pm Little Danny:

God this Pedro Santos track RIGHT NOW. (and thanx all for yer kind comments)
Thu. 4/21/16 8:46pm David in Cleveland:

Thanks.. there's a lot.. Bollywood, Indian classical, SE Asia..
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 8:48pm Flash Strap:

@Danny: I actually had other stuff planned for this moment, but the Santos took me over like a mania
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 8:48pm Flash Strap:

@Hyde: no way that's white people music
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 4/21/16 8:49pm melinda:

@hyde: t's easier to exclude categories than to picks faves, isn't it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 4/21/16 8:49pm melinda:

that was supposed to be 'it's' but t's works.
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 8:50pm Flash Strap:

t's better than 'tis, even
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 8:51pm ndbob:

It's hard for me to exclude any category though - maybe slick 70s and 80s R and B ballads
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 8:51pm Flash Strap:

this track is too good, i don't think we're gonna make it
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 8:52pm Flash Strap:

I feel wonderful excluding cali punk bands post-ska-revival

even the good ones, who cares

maybe even pre ska-revival
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 8:53pm Flash Strap:

also Aerosmith
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 8:54pm ndbob:

I could exclude the post 1970 Grateful Dead
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 8:57pm hyde:

i would exclude Spyrogyra style jazz fusion. but i'm afraid if we start naming all our exclusions, someone's gonna get their toes stepped on. i'm already looking a little bit askance at that cali punk thing ;)
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 9:00pm ndbob:

I don't mind having my metaphorical toes stepped on:)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 4/21/16 9:04pm Stepchild:

well, music was all I ever dug about church. I see it was intentional on their part...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 4/21/16 9:05pm melinda:

I don't like metal. Maybe a few things here and there.
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 9:05pm Flash Strap:

haha truly sorry Hyde! nobody defending Aerosmith though, I see
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 9:06pm Flash Strap:

"a funny man" I love that
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 9:06pm hyde:

haha, i can take it. it wouldn't be any fun if we all didn't love & hate some different things
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 9:07pm ndbob:

Exactly Hyde - GTDS couldn't be what it is if we did
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 4/21/16 9:07pm melinda:

I hate many things but not sure how to categorize them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 4/21/16 9:08pm Stepchild:

"Let's agree to disagree"

"I don't agree to that"
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 9:08pm Flash Strap:

i DON'T hate the perfect harmonies on this track, I'll tell you that
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 4/21/16 9:09pm melinda:

Yeah, Prince Buster is good stuff!
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 9:10pm hyde:

i should make it clear i'm not standing up for Green Day
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 9:10pm Flash Strap:

I would never think that of you, Hyde. Or wish it upon your enemy
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 9:11pm Flash Strap:

i seriously don't understand how Horace Andy's voice can sound like this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 4/21/16 9:12pm melinda:

One time I was playing the Carpenters at work and a customer expressed sympathy, thinking I had been forced to play them. I let them know it was my choice and they felt bad but I thought it was funny.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 4/21/16 9:12pm coelacanth:

i respect the members of green day much more than i like their music.
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 9:13pm Flash Strap:

boy, i know that exact sort of moment, Melinda
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 9:13pm ndbob:

I really like the Carpenters - I really disliked them at the time - took decades to appreciate them
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 9:14pm northguineahills:

I love this Lennie Hibert. I first got it on a Soul Jazz Studio One comp.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 4/21/16 9:14pm melinda:

Bob I probably would have felt the same way had I been an adult during their peak popularity.
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 9:15pm Little Danny:

@Melinda - Man, I have massive love for the Carpenters, though, like ndbob, it took some deprogramming to get there. So much humanity in Karen's voice.
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 9:15pm Flash Strap:

NGH! Hey there pal

Whole LP's incredible if you've never heard it, tho i'm sure you have by now
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 9:15pm hyde:

@Melinda that's hilarious. i'm with ndb on this one--i hated the Carpenters for a long time, then got on board. when i was in a bad lounge band we used to cover "Close To You" and after awhile i really started to dig it.
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 9:16pm ndbob:

@melinda some of it was what I associated them with - kids who voted for Nixon, etc - though looking back that seems really silly
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 9:16pm Flash Strap:

she really is tremendous at times, and they did some pretty well-composed songs
Thu. 4/21/16 9:16pm David in Cleveland:

Just stepped out for a minute.. Sirius XM playing a Prince
tribute right now on their '80s channel.. people calling in
with stories..
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 9:17pm Flash Strap:

hard to compete with a Prince tribute on a night like this

dammit what a year
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 9:17pm ndbob:

I think Richard Chamberlain dd the original "Close to You"
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 9:17pm hyde:

i'll say, i've heard some pretty amazing Prince stories today
Thu. 4/21/16 9:18pm David in Cleveland:

Flash! Dude, you just played Horace Andy, that's my guy!!
I collect Horace Andy albums!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 4/21/16 9:18pm coelacanth:

not just Prince...
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 9:19pm Flash Strap:

He's amazing, David!
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 9:20pm hyde:

yeah. i love that Horace Andy Skylarking record you posted. i had never heard it before.
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 9:20pm Flash Strap:

I think that this is basically a perfect song, and I marvel at it
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 4/21/16 9:20pm coelacanth:

i once had a formal complaint brought against me for playing too much reggae!
Thu. 4/21/16 9:20pm David in Cleveland:

Under appreciated. Sleepy is still doing stuff in the studio.
I've been his fan since 1980.. his was my first reggae record
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 4/21/16 9:21pm melinda:

I love playing vintage smooth tunes in the store where I work. It's generally not what people expect to hear, yet it doesn't cross over into 'inappropriate for a retail environment', which much of my taste could. It's hard to know and I tend to push the boundaries. I once got a positive customer response to the Langley Schools Music Project, so I played it again, only to have another customer get mean and contemptuous and leave the store.
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 9:21pm hyde:

@coelecanth ok, that is also hilarious
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 4/21/16 9:22pm melinda:

coelecanth we can't please everyone. I would think reggae would be fairly safe.
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 9:22pm ndbob:

Ah the Langley Schools - great stuff - I remember when Irwin played it for the first time - announcing it as a major discovery.
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 9:23pm Flash Strap:

@Melinda: that's really funny

@C: that's even funnier because it involves a formal complaint, the ultimate indignity
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 9:25pm ndbob:

I got asked to take off music I was playing a few times when I worked in a video store - but I could usually get away with some pretty odd stuff.
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 9:25pm Flash Strap:

@bob: that's crazy to think about. seems like when i was coming up that was long-established legend, foundational stuff
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 9:26pm hyde:

@melinda The Flamingoes' aforementioned Flamingo Serenade would be perfect for that sort of thing. it's so smooth, and yet at bottom is so very strange sounding
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 9:26pm Flash Strap:

totally hyde
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 9:27pm ndbob:

@Evan it was on the Incorrect Music Show - the second FMU show I ever listened to after Charlie
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 4/21/16 9:27pm coelacanth:

kinda funny then. definitely funny now!
...i did try to be democratic. i'd wait after each tape and no one ever played anything, so i chose again. it wasn't always reggae, but i guess all that world music shit sounded the same to them!

I learned of Langley Schools long before I started listening to WFMU, and when I started listening to more programs here and learned that Irwin was the producer it made me even more excited about WFMU.

What a great set.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 4/21/16 9:33pm Stepchild:

even if there was too much reggae!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 4/21/16 9:33pm melinda:

The couple who liked the Langley Schools at first thought there was a chorus of children practicing in the next room when they heard it. Which tickled me.

some of the earliest svengali moves wfmu made with me were negativland. (the earliest was balanese gamelan music in 1977)
...now, after 2 members last year, another has moved on. (2 days ago, on his birthday.)
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 9:36pm hyde:

@c right, negativland. that was the other guy who checked out today. i saw those guys play live once, it was wild.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 4/21/16 9:37pm coelacanth:

that was only the second time i've heard Nora Dean. the other song is "mojo girl". good to hear the rare rootsy reggae with a female vocal.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 4/21/16 9:39pm coelacanth:

man, hyde. i'm a tad envious! 'never saw them.
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 9:43pm hyde:

it was great. they did this thing with a toaster--they came out, put two slices of bread in it, popped it down and just left it while they played. it created more smoke than any dry ice show i've ever seen in my life, just totally filled the club.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 4/21/16 9:44pm coelacanth:

hahaha! that's perfect!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 4/21/16 9:45pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...& how far is The Andrew Sisters in 1941 from Chuck Berry really?...
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 9:46pm Flash Strap:

seriously rabbit!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 4/21/16 9:46pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...well - it's Boogie...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 4/21/16 9:48pm coelacanth:

and now to reveal my stupidity...when i first heard negativland on fmu, c. 1980, i thought it was a bunch of samples being mixed live by the dj! i was very impressed!
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 9:51pm ndbob:

excellent show Evan - glad I could stick around!
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 9:51pm Flash Strap:

me too Bob!

Well - talk of FreeForm Radio - some college radio used to be pretty out there before the 'Republican Revolution' took the funds away for everything & the universe had to be monetized & therefore mainstreamed...much as HipHop used to be more adventurous before Sampling rights laws came down hard...
Avatar Thu. 4/21/16 9:53pm hyde:

@c you know the Internet Archive has the full Over the Edge Radio archive, yes?

Do or DIY is one of those I keep meaning to check out more of. I was won over by The Muppet Christ Superstar in December.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 4/21/16 9:58pm melinda:

Have a good expedition, Flash!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 4/21/16 9:58pm coelacanth:

hyde, i blurrily recall a mention of that when Don or Ian died. i think i was such a wreck that i never followed up.
