Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

Remember when Merle said this, in 2010, about President Obama: "It's really almost criminal what they do with our president," Haggard said. "There seems to be no shame or anything. They call him all kinds of names all day long, saying he's doing certain things that he's not. It's just a big old political game that I don't want to be part of."

There are no guilty pleasures, but I have a guilty pleasure: suburbs. And dying malls. Bracket the racial dynamic that populated the suburbs in the first place--impossible to bracket, I know--and I get a warm cozy feeling from nondescript, generic, regimented streets, strip malls, parks, and such. But I wouldn't complain if Merle sang "Covina Blues."
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 4/8/16 12:56pm Parq:

What I love most about "I Wonder" is how you don't find out until the bridge that he's a POW and not a drifter.

great show um / all hail merle (& understated fuzz guitar stabs)
Avatar    Fri. 4/8/16 1:02pm Alex In Illinois:

It depends on the suburb or type of suburb. At some point, they started making some suburbs without any sidewalks or crosswalks or places to walk or ride a bike, so that one needs to use a car just to get across the street. By now, someone must have set some words of discontent about such an environment to music. If not, then it is about time someone does.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 4/8/16 1:03pm Uncle Michael:

Alex, those would be the suburbs full of "snout houses."
Avatar Fri. 4/8/16 1:04pm Lane Gray:

Topeka is a nice size. Big enough to have what you need, and KC is just over the hill if you need a city
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 4/8/16 1:07pm Parq:

"Sing Me Back Home" packs an emotional wallop that would knock a guy right off his feet.
Avatar Fri. 4/8/16 1:08pm Lane Gray:

Was expecting deeper catalog stuff, but it's early yet....
Avatar    Fri. 4/8/16 1:08pm Alex In Illinois:

Yes, Uncle Michael, miles of snout houses, that is the picture! I don't think I can recall that phrase in a song though. Someone must have used it by now. though.
Avatar Fri. 4/8/16 1:08pm ndbob:

I have no problem with suburbs - Bloomington is about the right size for me. Jamestown a little too small
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 4/8/16 1:09pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar Fri. 4/8/16 1:09pm Lane Gray:

Never. I love his hits.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 4/8/16 1:12pm doctorjazz:

Avatar Fri. 4/8/16 1:13pm still b/p:

Merle's name always puts me in mind of PPL's "I'll Fix Your Flat Tire Merle," which I encountered a LOT in college. Somehow familiarity with his own big hit-making output eluded me then and ever since -- except for Okie From Musgokee, and even at that, in those same college days the knock-off Up Against The Wall Redneck Mother was heard -- on jukebox or drunk-sung by party circles -- farrrr far more often.
Avatar Fri. 4/8/16 1:18pm Lane Gray:

All the talk of New York distracted. Him. A song so nice he played it twice
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 4/8/16 1:18pm Uncle Michael:

still b/p that's a Big Brother & the Holding Co. cover. Nick Gravenites wrote it.
Avatar Fri. 4/8/16 1:18pm Lane Gray:

MOON!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 4/8/16 1:19pm Parq:

I'll admit, I had the impression throughout my youth that "Okie From" was tongue in cheek. It seemed so popular with the very people it was attacking that, to me, it just didn't seem plausible that it was in earnest. Even the Beach Boys covered it (which Spazz played last night), and I can remember watching a TV concert taped in Central Park, seeing longhairs happily singing along with the Beachmen on it. It took me a while to accept that he had been dead serious, and now I know that, by then, his own view was already becoming more nuanced.
Fri. 4/8/16 1:22pm Alex in Illinois:

I don't have a problem with all suburbs. I live in one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 4/8/16 1:22pm Brian in UK:

I think Merle was grown up enough to be able to change his point of view.

The thing I can count on is my fingers. Quality.

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 4/8/16 1:37pm doctorjazz:

Have to say, when Okie came out, I thought it was tongue in cheek as well. The interviews I've read with him the past few days show him to have thought about it quite a bit afterwards, and, of course, to change his thinking on it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 4/8/16 1:37pm Brian in UK:

@Lane did you see my comment at 12:52?
Avatar Fri. 4/8/16 1:39pm Rich in Washington:

The 80s were a terrible time for country music. I recall working in a cafe/restaurant/lounge as a teen that was run by shitkickers. The music played incessantly on the jukebox was awful. Whenever I could, I would punch in a bunch of older country or the few rock n' roll tunes to try to dilute the (then) contemporary country pap they'd play.
Avatar Fri. 4/8/16 1:39pm Lane Gray:

Indeed. Stay Here And Drink needed the early attitude...

Avatar    Fri. 4/8/16 1:58pm KevinfromBayRidge:

As with many in my age "tranche", "Okie" was my Merle intro. However, realizing the Dead's "Mama Tried" was written by one and the same made things a whole lot better.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 4/8/16 1:58pm Parq:

One of the many (many) reasons I'm a devoted FMU fan is that, when we lose someone like Merle, I can always count on FMU to bring me a perspective (or usually, several) that I never had before on that artist -- whether it's someone like Bowie whose work I know well or someone like Merle where (like the Doc) I am mostly a dilettante.
Avatar Fri. 4/8/16 1:59pm Lane Gray:

Has anyone else noticed that Workingman Blues shares the same sixteen bar (slightly rarer) progression as Big Boss Man?
Avatar Fri. 4/8/16 2:00pm chromaphone:

This has probably already been mentioned but did Merle write all of these tunes?

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 4/8/16 2:14pm Uncle Michael:

Hank Cochran, Glenn Martin wrote this one...It's Not Love
Avatar Fri. 4/8/16 2:18pm Lane Gray:

Ndbob, if you mean That's The Way Love Goes, that's not Johnny Rodriguez, it's Lefty. At least Lefty different it first
  Fri. 4/8/16 2:18pm Dungaroos Kipawah:

Just a different version of the hit single--never heard it before and really liked it. The hit version from '83 more somber and resigned. Just wondering if version was pulled from the actual record or a compilation. Definitely not a mistake--the cut was fabulous, just different. This was the '83 hit version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mhaju2pwrJg
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 4/8/16 2:18pm Brian in UK:

Guess Merle did not really travel across the water here. Not to say that he was not popular, just did not resonate as he did with so many folks over your way.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 4/8/16 2:45pm Uncle Michael:

Damn..."Leonard" still really moves me.
Avatar Fri. 4/8/16 2:45pm 67tele:

its the little red one w/the white pick guard in the corner
  Fri. 4/8/16 2:45pm Mr C:

Lovely tribute Michael..
Avatar Fri. 4/8/16 2:45pm 67tele:

<--- that one - wow i used my internet skills
Avatar Fri. 4/8/16 2:48pm chromaphone:

White Line Fever makes me think of Gram Parsons' version. He was the opposite of poor as a child apparently.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 4/8/16 2:48pm Uncle Michael:

Thanks Mr. C.
Avatar Fri. 4/8/16 2:50pm Lane Gray:

I have an orange partscaster, but I play steel better.
Did Emmitt Miller write I ain't Got Nobody?
Love the western swing set. As opposed to the Western swingset
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 4/8/16 2:51pm Parq:

Asleep at the Wheel did their own Wills tribute, which included a version of "Corrina" that, I think, also had Johnny Gimble on fiddle.
Avatar Fri. 4/8/16 2:51pm Lane Gray:

Much better than the Brooks and Dunn abomination, with the swing removed
Avatar Fri. 4/8/16 2:52pm 67tele:

the western swingsets are a bitch...it takes a long time to hitch up the horses and they dont like it so much
Avatar    Fri. 4/8/16 2:57pm hyde:

woo hoo, bonus set!
Avatar Fri. 4/8/16 2:58pm Lane Gray:

No knock on Merle or Willie, but Emmylou did THE version, IMO
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 4/8/16 2:59pm doctorjazz:

Not Townes?
  Fri. 4/8/16 2:59pm Dean:

Yeah, I'm partial to Townes' live version from Houston.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 4/8/16 3:00pm Uncle Michael:

I can't disagree, Lane.

And this is the wrong version of this, dammit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 4/8/16 3:00pm Parq:

What Lane said.
Avatar Fri. 4/8/16 3:00pm Wilson K:

I definitely heard this on the radio in the 80s before I ever heard of TVZ...
Avatar Fri. 4/8/16 3:01pm Lane Gray:

I had a huge crush on Emmylou AND hers was the first I heard.
And Albert Lee and Hank DeVito? What's not to love.
Avatar    Fri. 4/8/16 3:01pm KevinfromBayRidge:

Awlright! UM in OT. is that Double-Time for Merle?
Avatar Fri. 4/8/16 3:01pm Wilson K:

Nice Townes fingerpick version on that extremely sad documentary about his life
  Fri. 4/8/16 3:01pm Dungaroos Kipawah:

Well no knock on Emmy, but no human sang "Pancho needs your prayers, it's true" like Hag. Just as good as singing gets. And his verse makes this version
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 4/8/16 3:02pm Uncle Michael:

No, not double...I'm not the man Kurt G. is.
Avatar Fri. 4/8/16 3:03pm Lane Gray:

Today's safety tip: get a vehicle professionally inspected after a deer strike, even a minor one. Five days and fthree thousand miles after a deer strike, my tie rod fell apart. Because of the deer..
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 4/8/16 3:05pm Uncle Michael:

The semi?
  Fri. 4/8/16 3:05pm Dean:

"Doe!"
Avatar Fri. 4/8/16 3:06pm 67tele:

that'll cost ya some 'bucks'...sorry
Avatar Fri. 4/8/16 3:06pm chromaphone:

Key to the Highway chords.
Avatar    Fri. 4/8/16 3:06pm hyde:

i kind of credit Merle Haggard with getting me personally into country music. I tangentially liked some stuff, but for many years wasn't that into it. Then I went through a period where I'd get CD's out of the public library, and one day I took home an I'm a Lonesome Fugitive/Branded Man double compilation. That was a real whoa moment.
Avatar Fri. 4/8/16 3:06pm Lane Gray:

Yup. It fell apart in the yard. The strain of a hard cut on a stationary tire pulled it right out
Avatar    Fri. 4/8/16 3:07pm KevinfromBayRidge:

Thanks Lane. Not too much of an issue in Brooklyn. I'm always on the the watch for Jumbo rats, though!
Avatar Fri. 4/8/16 3:08pm ndbob:

wow never knew Merle recorded this
Avatar    Fri. 4/8/16 3:11pm KevinfromBayRidge:

Ain't no garbage today! Wunnerful tribute. I learned a helluva lot...And delayed doing my taxes at the same time-Win-Win!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 4/8/16 3:12pm Uncle Michael:

Thanks Kevin...two songs left...
Avatar    Fri. 4/8/16 3:13pm hyde:

Ever notice that deer have very narrow heads? Even though their bodies are several times the size of that of my dog, there just does not seem to be as much brain room in the deer's head as in the dog's head.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 4/8/16 3:19pm Parq:

Ended as we started.
Avatar    Fri. 4/8/16 3:20pm hyde:
